Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero on Switch 2 is once again a great testament as to the reliability of porting on Nintendo’s system. While some compromises have been made with frame rate and aspects of the visual presentation, the majority of the rest of the experience stands up strongly alongside the other consoles. Sparking! Zero is no doubt the premiere Dragon Ball experience for fans who want to fight it out with a huge roster of characters in some of the series’ most iconic match-ups. While this is more of a DB simulator than a straight-up fighter, the simple pick-up-and-play beginnings mask what is actually a surprisingly deep brawler. The lack of a traditional story mode for purists of the series will hurt some, but the what-if aspect of the campaign is a true delight and does a good job in renewing interest in once again going through the well-worn adventure.

Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero delivers a commendable 3D brawler experience even if some visual and performance issues persist. The immense roster is sure to please any Dragon Ball fan, no matter what age or era they entered the franchise. The branching narratives in Episode Battles and the online play are fun staples to the game, and it feels right at home on Switch 2.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, the most comprehensive and entertaining game in the series, has been meticulously ported to Nintendo Switch 2 consoles and offers a gaming experience that will delight both anime fans and newcomers.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero on Switch 2 delivers the same energetic, content-packed fighter as other platforms, capturing the magic of the franchise despite a few technical compromises. Its biggest strength is portability, which adds real value for fans. However, if you don’t care about playing on the go and own another platform, the superior experience can be found elsewhere.

I encourage Bandai Namco and the development team to make even more optimizations over time. The Switch 2 version can be even better, even if that 60 FPS target doesn’t get hit in the future. The rollout of Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO DLC is also vital, and I hope Switch and Switch 2 users won’t be far behind the other consoles in terms of content. Everyone benefits from the hype of new DLC releasing at the same time on all platforms, after all.

All things considered, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero on Nintendo Switch 2 delivers a fully playable experience that is good handheld, but the developer should’ve done more for the visuals and performance when playing docked. I would still play it here over PC handhelds I own, but it is hard to recommend the Switch 2 version to play on TV if you have access to PS5 or Xbox Series X.
