    Arguably the best third party game on the 3DS, this is a really great Monster Hunter game and the fact its on a portable console is incredible.

    Simply one of the best experiences of the 3ds and video games in general.
    I really can't say enough about how much I've enjoyed this wonderful game in the 300 hours I've been playing it (300 hours because of the incredible amount of content it has, not because I'm hooked lmao).

It's open world action game that a player can level and customize its character in many ways it pleases, and fight big creatures that make the game addicting to play.     Still, the best Monster Hunter to date, a lot of content, the first mechanical change that felt like it made a true dent in the series, a broad roster of monsters, and an amount of craftables indescriptible. Though, but fair when you learn the game, an amazing experience for whoever loves monster hunter or a good challenge.

    One of the best 3ds games in history. Awesome community, great gameplay, and the design of the monsters are amazing. The story is fine and every weapon feels different. Maps are well designed, monsters are fair, and reward smart gameplay. The story, however, is really nothing special.

Monster Hunter fans would agree that this would be the turning point of the series, for better, as the new environments and monsters paved the way for entries to come. Fully-rendered cutscenes now flow right into gameplay, making the experience of encountering each monster for the first time feel much more intense, and it's something not replicated to such success in any entry since. The only issue, which seemed to irk many, was its inclusion of the Street Pass featured Guild Quests. These quests could only be leveled up through repeat clears, and its difficulty scaling would prove to be the hardest in the series to date.     Monster Hunter Generations was my introduction to the series, followed by Generations Ultimate, then Rise. Upon playing this game, it's by far the best old world monster hunter for me. The amount of cut scenes you get also adds up to the immersion which later titles abandoned (except World).     I played this game a while back and it's definitely a 10/10. My first game of the MH series, and remains one of my favorites among them all, I've sunk 1400+ hours into this game (two separate save files, one with 900 other with 500) and if I went back to playing this I'd still have something to do.

    MH4U is a game that takes you for a spin. You're never on command, you are the Monster's B*tch.
    Jokes aside, this game is awesome and while pretty easy to play it is also quite deep and some quests and classes require some thinking and strategizing.

    What an amazing game. By far the best MH game of all hand held consoles (MHGU included).
    The gameplay is amazing. A ton of content to play and the multiplayer is outstanding.
    I prefer this on to the Generations and Generations Ultimate just because it's gameplay. It's so much better.
    The 3D effect is amazing and the frame rate is actually very good with almost non existing slow downs.

It's interesting mechanics, tons of monsters to hunt, many weapons to craft, this game will never get boring, unless if you are a try hard and grind this game but that's besides the point. This cycle is so rewarding and satisfying that it can easily draw anyone in who enjoys a rewarding experience. This game even contains a standalone story mode, where you investigate the cause of an unknown virus with your caravan as you travel to multiple locales, looking for an answer. This story isn’t just serviceable, its actually really fun and genuinely interesting to play through. The place where Monster Hunter hits another sweet spot is cooperative multiplayer. I have made so many friends through this feature, that 90% of the friends on my friends list is from this game. The thought of working together to hunt down a big beast for rich spoils is brilliant in concept, and its done flawlessly in execution. While there were occasional hitches that caused a disconnect, those were so rare that it doesn’t really hinder my experience at all.     One of the best MH games. They played with new mechanics that can be hit or miss even for veterans. But watch youtubers, get a MH babysitter, and one you get it you'll love it. I had to babysit my husband and now he's just as excited about new releases as I am.

    The game is astounding! The monsters are unique, what makes every boss battle singular. The sensation of job done after every quest is awesome. The controls, although hard to master, are easy when you get and not a problem at all.     the controls, its unique and perfect the way it is, and needs to take times to get used to, from camera control to movement and attack of your character, from using an item to throwing a bomb,
    the control scheme is perfect, once ya get hang of it,ask anyone who loves monster hunter, they'll say the perfect controls ,epic monsters, and hunt, and friends

    the presentation of the game is just the "top-notch"
    from beginning to the end credits, it just awesome, the cutscene that make good use of effects available on the game engine, the clever dialogue, the memorable Npc you met and chat with, and Cats,
    it just perfect,

    the story
    it has 2 main arc, Low rank, and High Rank..till end credits i guess
    and both are quite good, depends, but still far better than mh3u which the predecessor of this game ,
    it also has free story dlc if u want more story,

    the main cake of this game is of course the experiences,
    the game added 2 new weapon,
    which one(Insect Staff/glaive) take good use of the new mechanic, the mount, where you can ride on the monster and staby-stab it to make "MASSIVE DAMAGE" to the monster, and leave it vulnarable for several second, that creates opening for others to attack
    and
    another weapon (Charge blade) is one hella of blade, is Sword and Shield and an Axe, can switch between those, to, it can unleashed a fully charged attack which looks and also deals a "Massive Damage" that felt sooooooo satisfying!!

    the new mechanic, the mount, actually does make the gameplay more engaging, you finally going to rely on your surrounding, searching for ledge to attack and mount it, it makes the Hunt felt much alive and immersive? haha but it sure is fun,the climbing of this game is improved greatly, it is faster and better in every way, the new ailments "Frenzy" is also great addition, which i will not spoil it for ya haha,

    Palicoes are back,
    sure , i miss kayamba and chacha from mh3u,
    but u can have 2 palicoes like chacha and kayamba
    and palicoes are much more useful than chacha and kayamba lol
    and u can customize their armor and weapons uwu Meownster hunter!
    and you can find more palicoes when ya hunt more cats more fun!

    with all the great there is also a kinda meh new stuff, which is the Expedition, unlike previous titles, there are no free hunt (google it) in this game, but there is expedition, there is an area called Everwood which are kinda randomly generated, have a different monster available depends on the "rare scale" 1-5. the 1 is normal/weak to 5, strong rare monster, (elder dragon might included) in everwood also you can find Artifacts, for me its a great addition

    Artifacts/Relics is Rare weapon/armor which you can clean it up, upgraded and sometimes are more powerful than your average forge armor,
    that is, super rare to find, as you need to mine it,yes mine it ,most of the time you can mine it on ever wood, those artifact/relics also depends on the Rare scale thou, look it up! its worth it!

    the content of this game,
    it is beyond huge! i felt kinda bad paying rm 125 to this game due to its massive Holy-****-Like content, imagine 1/4 of this game took me about 110 hours, and i also forge like 5 armors 4 weapons, and also DLC/Online Gameplay including Streetpass , also minigames like Meownster Hunter and Fishing? its super huge

    Quest, u find monster you kill monster, gathering quest? read the quest descrition uwu , and it just like the way you remember it

    Monster Design, most of the monster are mosters that are returnign from MHFU/gen 2 monster hunter, which is good, considering i always wanted to hunt those monsters, the MH4U new monster also very damn Cool!,
    the Gore Magala the flagship monster is sure is the BADASS!!

    Online experience, its excellent, rarely lag, even with slow net, no voice chat is quite bummer, but still u can use the touchpad keyboard,
    or use fb, skype and other to communicate,

    I find it amazing this game was so well liked! Just trying to play the game itself is an exercise in futility. I picked it up because I've been having a blast with Final Fantasy Explorers and a guildmate recommended the MH series for more crafting and monster farming goodness on my 3ds. Boy let me tell you was he wrong. The controls are so terrible 4 hours in I had become physically ill. II find it amazing this game was so well liked! Just trying to play the game itself is an exercise in futility. I could not have been more wrong. I've now invested roughly 40 hours and I'm done trying to have fun with this game.

    Difficulty should come from gameplay, not terrible controls. Fighting the controls to make the game even remotely playable isnt a difficulty mechanic, it's just shoddy game design. If you make it past what is easily the worst controls I've seen in a game, ever (I've been a gamer for 30 years), you are greeted with hyper slow combat, crafting, potion drinking, and even unsheathing your freaking weapon animations. The game just isn't fun, nothing about it is fun. Your palico is useless, hit boxes are super huge for your character and tiny for enemies, and enemies are many times over faster than you. It makes you feel like the game is literally cheating you out of a fun experience.

    I can think of many things more fun than MH4U, like going to the dentist, being in a car wreck, or listening to Creed on auto repeat for 4 years. This series may have come first, but Final Fantasy Explorers does literally every facet of the "monster hunter" genre better. The only thing that saved it from a zero review is that its pretty to look at and find new cool looking armor. Everything else is hot garbage.    … Expand

    With more than 70 hours of game (which despite everything is little for a monster hunter) I must say that the formula monster hunter is excellent but at the time of the battles it is COMPLETELY tedious, the battles are SLOW, everything is slow. Great mechanics, none of the new goofy hunter arts introduced in generations, an incredible amount of content, and streamlined interfaces which make doing all the normal tasks just a bit easier.     MH4U has the best story of all of the MH games. It also introduced the many ways hunters can interact with the environment that are seen in future titles. I think the game is lacking a bit in map appearance, but it makes up for that with the addition of some awesome new monsters. The Gore Magala is the true star of this game and its effect on the story makes this game so addicting.

    De nuevo capcom nos trae una nueva Obra maestra, este nuevo Monster Hunter es todo lo que fue en su momento el 3 pero corregido y aumentado.

    Ya es una tradición que todos los juegos de esta Saga tengan esta calidad en cuanto a Gameplay, gráficos, apartado sonoro y dificultad.
    Otro juego más que se suma a la lista de los títulos imprescindibles en tu colección de 3DS

    Surprisingly linear for a game like this. No open-world, just a hub and levels you can choose. I would at least have liked to enter the different areas as I please instead of choosing a quest and getting into one with a time limit and quest task to finish. Also way too much handholding, progression feels like on rails and the story is pretty bland too.

    We all know the reasons why ppl gave this game a negative review. ;) (Lack of skill and commitment; they dont choose their timing with sharpening weps, healing and when to attack, etc.) It says a lot of wht kind of gamer u r if u dont hav the patience to learn the game. This game requires SKILL, EXPERIENCE and even KNOWLEDGE of items and monsters, to even get far.     I gave it a five because the creatures are well designed and beautifully animated.

    Otherwise it is repetitive, limited, unintuitive grindfest that will sap hundreds of hours out of your life doing nothing but murdering the same monsters over and over and over again.

    As a single player experience, this is a boring grind with no story. There is no real challenge, you don't need to be smart to win, just have a lot of time in your hands to grind and gather stuff.    Greatly overrated. Monster hunter is only good if you are a kid with tons of free time and have a close circle of friends to play multiplayer with. Otherwise, there is nothing of value here.

    Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is a step forward regarding content and gameplay, but it is also a step backwards considering 3DS hardware limitations, most importantly, the very low resolution of the screen (on both standard and XL models) which makes it much harder to notice items and to enjoy the visuals. Obviously, 3DS does not support any keyboard and the chat options are much more limited this time, which is a problem in a game that relies heavily on team work. As a single player experience is a solid one but as a multiplayer experience is not as solid as it used to be. Besides, this game makes evident how poor the 3DS screen is. The 3D effect feels a bit tiring in this game, probably because of the big environments fitted in a small screen. This time there is no HD version like last time (Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate), so this is the only version you can get (same for newer Monster Hunter Generations). Oh, and you'll need the Circle Pad Pro or New 3DS if you want to control the camera in a natural way. If you can forgive the hardware limitations, there's a solid game here for you, but I can't wait to see the franchise in HD again. It can't be soon enough.    … Expand

You can definitely play the lower ranks in a 'casual' way, but as soon as you get to the higher ranks it's more about the challenge than the enjoyment. Multiplayer is one of the best aspects of this game - coming from200hrs in I still feel like there's a TONNE of stuff to learn. But when i made the fatefull decision to buy MH4U on 3Ds, I fell in love within a few minutes. this game is definetely not for the faint of heart, and im a brave little warrior, so when i got a taste of high rank quests- MMMM!!!! the balance between progression, Challenge,I'm brand new to the Monster Hunter series, and only because i didnt know much about it besides, you hunt monsters... In a certain way of thinking, it seems pointless to just make new armor and weapons- but that is not even the half of it. The satisfaction of bringing down Dalamandur after countless faints is unreal, as you hear the triumph music play, you feel the satisfaction that you have kicked ASS, especialy after all the trial and error you went through to memorize the monster's attacks and patterns and trully earn that new hunter rank and awesome armor set. The Monster Hunter series is the only game i have ever played in which i WANTED to grind for materials. every time you fight a monster, its patterns vary, and you may encounter it in a different area, adding tons of variety to the challenge. Monsters dont fall because you mashed the attack button. it fell because you beat it at its own game despite all its superiorities in health, size, attack power and mobility. No game will give you as much of a feeling of time well spent when you've poured 300 free hours into it. this only scratches the surface of why YOU, yes, YOU should get into Monster Hunter.… Expand

It's an interesting alternative to a full on RPG, though I found it to be quite repetitive in nature and would have preferred a more expansive, open world. Instead the main "arena" in which you undertake tasks is made of a number of very small zones, with a load screen as you move between each. Quite why this was necessary in a modern game isn't clear to me, but it does serve some small purpose - each zone has a slightly different feel and often different enemy types and collectibles within.

    Controls are strange at first and there's a lot to learn, but the game provides a lot of low level quests that are fully voluntary tutorials for various weapon types. Kudos to Capcom for not forcing us to sit through these (potentially, depending how well you do) several hours of tutorials before getting into the game. The only issue I found with the games was with the camera. It is difficult to track the enemies as you (and they) move around. Even with the New 3DS, which is detected as a Circle Pad Pro, the camera is easier to control using the D-pad provided on the touch screen. The game does provide a way to lock on to an enemy which helps a great deal... when it works.

    I haven't found a great deal of patience to learn the intricacies of the game, but I'm slowly and surely getting into it. I still don't get the hype, but there is something fun about this. For myself it's largely due to the aforementioned nostalgia it generates for Phantasy Star Online - the way your characters walks through enemies (even in offline mode - and a lot like the effect in World of Warcraft) which points to its basis in online play.

    Another impressive feat in cramming a full Wii game onto a 3DS cartridge. Worth a visit, if you're a fan of this kind of thing. It is bug free and well made, just not entirely my cup of tea.    … Expand

    This was surprisingly an awesome game! I had never played a monster hunter game before but I have to say, I am truly impressed. It is a great time waster as there is so much gameplay and content in this game. Everyday, I have an hour to myself on the bus to school so I can always fit in a couple of quests.

The weapons, armor, combat, graphics, landscapes and of course the MONSTERS are just utterly brilliant. I played it for about 10 hours and realized I needed the best version of monster hunter. I decided to get MH4U for the 3ds and so far have not regretted it one bit. First off, this game is so great for newcomers. Way easier than Freedom Unite at first which is a major plus. When playing, you're going to be gathering items, farming monsters for parts to craft armor and weapons, and upgrading said armor and weapons all so you can beat the next monster threat. You can buff your character with skills that are attached to armor and weapons and you can also attach skills to them with things called decorations. Eventually, you'll have armor and weapons that are suited for certain situations and certain monster encounters. It may be overwhelming, but if you get over that hump, you'll be hooked. Its, in my honest opinion, amongst the greatest games ever made. And its on a handheld! I couldn't recommend this title more… Expand

    Monster Hunter(MH) has never been about story, but surprisingly MH4U did pretty well in this regard. You start off as a caravan hunter who nobody expects much or relies on, till you gradually garner respect of pretty much every one in everywhere (Basically what happens in all MH games)

    But one of the good things in this iteration is that, as you progress through the Caravan Quests, your caravan moves to other villages and you as a hunter helps solve the monster problems that plague the said village. This is really a fresh idea as the past MH games have you being in the same village all the time. It really gives you the sense of adventure, and you keep wondering where you'll end up next!

    We can't talk about an MH game without talking about the stars of the series - the Monsters! Like every new installment, there's bound to be new monsters. Take a look at the game's cover art and you'll notice the Gore Magala, MH4U's flagship, a black, monstrous beast that seemingly has no eyes for sight. The thing is, it uses a pair of horn-like features called feelers on its head to detect movement, much like an insect's antennae. And the game even goes out of its way to explain this, in which you can tell the attention to detail Capcom has put into when developing this game.

    Each new monster feels unique, the Gore Magala's wingarm starts to have a purplish glow when it is near enraged, the Kecha Wacha hangs onto canopies to encourage you to explore the game's new verticality, the Tetsucabra uses its strong tusks to dig out a huge boulder and throws it in your way. Every subtle movement of the monsters tell you what it's gonna do next, and the top-notch animation - a staple of the series, coupled with outstanding cries and sounds that the monsters make, really bring them to life!

    This installment also introduces two new weapons into its substantial weapon types of 12, bumping it up to 14, adding new variety to its superb gameplay. Each weapon feels different, and requires different approaches to varying monsters. Series newcomers should try out all weapons and find which ones suit them best, whereas veterans are most likely going to find the new weapons a welcome addition to the MH family.

    (gonna stop my elaboration here as i have something to take care of, and this is becoming a long review)

Most players will get stuck at a few points, that’s true, but it is also entirely possible for any player to eventually beat the mission and move on (which feels very rewarding!), because they will get more familiar with that monster and the fights will consequently become easier and easier. Speaking of “familiar”, this is one of the few games in which experience actually matters, experience as in real experience not experience for leveling up: the monsters don’t get any easier, it is you that get stronger and stronger by experiencing many hunts, and the sense of growth is something that many players highly appreciate. At no point in the game I felt cheated, as you can only blame yourself for not recognizing pre-moves before attacks, not reacting fast enough or not using the right item at the right time. Each fight is challenging in its own way, the different monsters’ different attack patterns and elements add freshness to every encounter, and you get a great sense of accomplishment every time you slay a strong foe. Personally, the superb visuals (monster design, weapon and armor design, environments) and the great music that captures the mood of different fights also make the hunts more enjoyable than frustrating.

    And honestly, if you really find this game impossible to play, the action genre is simply not for you. Millions of fans have no problems playing this game, so you can't really blame the game for it being too difficult for you. You are the minority here. Actually, as a "veteran" who started from MH2G, I can say that this is the most new-comers-friendly game in the franchise (and it doesn’t disappoint veterans/hardcore players either as the difficulty is properly hard in G-rank).

    Easily one of the best titles on 3DS, and one of the best of the action/rpg genre games. Go grab it if you haven’t already! Play it with friends! The multiplayer is also a blast of fun!    … Expand

    However, there lies a darker side to the Monsters, in which there are those who are fierce, and vicious, not due to an evil nature, no, but instead, many are territorial of what they claim as their own land, or perhaps a daring thief has chosen to steal one of the eggs in their clutch.

    This is were you come in; a Novice Hunter, filled with excitement, and ready to form a name for yourself, carving your legend into the stone, so that those who see it, can tell tales of your prowess and bravery.

    MH4U, is a unique game, in which it is unyielding, but rewarding. Players who first start the game, may find the world overwhelming, not understanding the concepts within the game, and become discouraged by the lack of direction they require. This is not uncommon, as everyone has to start a Monster Hunter game at some point or another. But, do not fret, as the first chapter of the story demonstrates and teaches the very basics of Monster Hunter: Using your weapons.

    By taking the time to understand how the combat system works, a beginner can and will improve, working their way up to novice, and further. As the game progresses, you'll understand the unique and fun crafting system, which allows you to take the parts, carved from Monsters, and gathered from the landscape, in order to create, beautiful, terrifying, and hilarious assortments of armor and weapons alike, furthering your growth within this world.

    MH4U contains two different play modes, in which a player will predominantly follow the single player mode. The single player mode follows the story of your Hunter's interaction with the Caravan. A group of travelling adventurer's seeking to uncover the legend of a mysterious artifact in their possession. As you uncover the truth, you feel a sense of accomplishment in your deeds, and triumphs, looking back and the Hunter you once were, and who you are now.

    As you become more comfortable, you find yourself delving into the multiplayer world of the Gathering Hall, where you and a plethora of Hunters join side by side to hunt the most fearsome monsters, or gathering the rarest materials and treasures.

    The fun and excitement of a Hunting Party is enough to fuel the most discouraged Hunters. This provides them with the ability to learn, and grow as well, taking back what they've achieved into the single player game, even stronger.

    The controls for this game are interesting. Whereas many games require only the gear you have (being the 3DS system), I'd advise that anyone interested, and invested in MH4U, go out and obtain a Circle Pad Pro, specific to their device.

    This will allow for a much more fluid camera control, don't be fooled into thinking the game is of poor quality without this, I have seen many of Hunters who prefer not to obtain this add on, and instead fight, and win against the toughest foes. Naturally, this only gains to enhance your experience.

    If this game appears to suit you, then test out the available demo, doing so will allow you to face off against the series's trademark Monster, the Gore Magala, and fierce, and exhilarating battle, filled with interesting mechanics, and edge of your seat action. By doing this, you give yourself the opportunity to feel the game for it's fast paced moments, but get the thrill of defeating one of the tougher monsters.

    After 350+ hours of gameplay I can say it´s trully inmersive and I just can get enough of this awesome game. I truly recommend it but be carefull it is a hard game and you must practice a lot, the beginnig of the game it´s kinda silly but once you hit G-Rank you really understand the magic of this game.

    I just failed a 2 hour long time line quest for the 5th time cause of the "boss" (G. jagi) just ran away when i came close to killing it, once it started to run it was impossible to stun it. impossible to catch up to it. it was immune to all kind of crowd control whatsoever. mines didn't work, nothing worked. i've literary spent 10 hours straight chasing a boss that only runs away

    Weapon choice plays an important part as it always has in the series. If you are fighting a fast monster, you don't want to use a big cumbersome weapon. There are also two new weapons, the Insect Glaive and Charge Blade. Every weapon has a good variety of attacks and keeps things interesting.

    Armor is also important. Making armor from defeated monsters always feels so satisfying and rewarding. (same goes for weapons)
    Armor gives different skills to help in battle and I always find these to be really cool.

    Monster fights can get repetitive but that's what Monster Hunter is all about. Grinding monsters so that you can make that gear you've been wanting. There is a wide variety of monsters to fight and some returning from Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. I will admit that some monsters can be a real pain, constantly stun locking your guy and spamming the same move again and again.

    Movement has been improved. Before you could only climb up certain walls, but now you can scale most walls you see. You can even jump on and mount the monster, latching on to inflict more damage! Underwater combat has been removed which I find to be a great relief.

    Story is kinda meh, hasn't really been its strong point. I think it's just there so you don't get totally bored. It's all about taking down large monsters, the story is just kinda there.

    Multiplayer is what brings out most of the fun in it, so if you've got a friend nearby that has it or a good internet connection, be sure to try it out. You can go to the Gathering Hall (place for multiplayer) in solo mode, although the monsters there are beefed up to accommodate for more players. So you can tackle it solo, but it will be noticeably harder. This also seems to be the only way to fight some monsters in the game, as they do not appear in the solo story until you've done this.

    The Palico allies are back this time and I love it! (little kitty people)
    They tag along with you and help on quests when playing solo or one will assist you if playing with one friend. (two players and two palicoes for a total of 4 hunters). You can change how they assist in battle and are more helpful than the teammates in previous games. But don't rely on them to do much damage. They mostly just assist with healing or powering you up.

    Overall the game is great and combat feels smooth. You will often be fighting the same monster again and again to make gear you really want. Story is forgettable and not too interesting. Upgrading and crafting new gear always feels so rewarding and satisfying for all the hard work. Playing with others makes this game really shine. If you don't mind repetition and love battling large monsters, definitely pick this game up.    … Expand

    I have never really been a huge Monster Hunter fan. I remember picking up Portable for the PSP what seems like so many years ago now, and sinking a fair few hours into it, loving the world it plunged you into and the environments that engulfed you. My one problem with it was the difficulty though. Whether I was just to young, impatient and too easily frustrated to really appreciate it, itI have never really been a huge Monster Hunter fan.     Now fast forward those years to the release now of 4 and I love the bloody game. Whether patience and skill came with age (unlikely), or I am just now a generally much better video game player, the world not only captivates me so much more, it keeps my attention and is that game I can sit on at lunch, or after work relaxing to make the time go by. The controls are extremely easy to pick up, it still has the skill level needed of the other games, and you still need to figure out your fighting strategy, but the controls and response just seems so much more fluent now. Busting out combos and taking out your large pray never felt so rewarding, and the new jump attack mechanics just feels so satisfying driving your sword, or hammer down into your prey.

    The only thing I will say, is there is so much text talk. It doesn't put you off the game, you just realise very early on that it just isn't necessary. The graphics on the console are beautiful, along with the lush and vibrant worlds it sends you into. The multiplayer feature is something that has been much needed for this series too, though I haven't played it yet, so I can't really comment on it.

    If you are a Monster Hunter fan, pick this game up, you won't regret it. If you're a new comer to the series, but want to try it out, this is your best bet and possibly the most fun you will have with the series.    … Expand

    Combat is entertaining and fluid, Graphics are really nice but some textures look a little off, Character customization isn't wide but there is hundreds of different armor types to craft and buy that make your character look cool, a huge array of weapons that fits almost any play style, only got 10 hours in the game but im planning on playing it alot more

    I'm not sure how to put it, this is basically right between mmo and single player. It's extremely packed with items and gear that you have many directions you can play this. It's a great game and has great combat much like Dark Souls. The bosses are smart and the game gets better and better. Don't forget to play it with friends as it's a real blast to play in groups.

Newbies will not know game down pat immediately, but players can learn about this game much easier than in most instalments I have found.

    You are given a wide variety of weapons to choose from and skills to adapt to, Monster Hunter is a game of self-progression. The odds are stacked against you, but that only serves to make beating a tough all the more satisfying! Control is a tad slow and clunky, but adapting to this isn't impossible, and with your weapon options, you can use this to your advantage most of the time. Speaking of weapons, weapon variety has been improved upon this time around, adding two new weapons that are solid on their own and ever satisfying to master. Which weapon is best is entirely up to you, as it depends on the player right down to it. The best thing to do in this game weapon-wise is experiment to find what fits your style.

    The Monster count is also bigger than ever before, spouting up to over 100 monsters this time around, including revamped old ones ones and fresh out of the box new ones, it's exciting to see that you can now fight what was once missed out on, and to learn the new one's patterns and overcome them.

    The presentation is a bit jagged and rough, the music is very well fitting for each monster and the right situation as well the town themes stick out very well, however the environment will most likely not please graphics-enthusiasts. While I personally think the visuals have a nice charm to them, in their rough, realistic yet not so much approach, I can't say that everyone will love it.

    Overall, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is a game that will keep you coming back for more, it's challenging, grabbing, addictive and fresh. A gem on the 3DS that really should not be missed. Plus, I feel I should mention that this game gets free monthly DLC available for download, so get on that!    … Expand

    Clunky camera controls unless you have the analog extension or the new 3DS, the graphics are kinda **** and honestly I don't get why people love this game so much, the combat is also clunky and your character is very slow no matter what weapon you pick. I could deal with the graphics being bad if the game was fun but it's just a hot mess.

    Swinging your weapon? Prepare to get mauled.
    Drinking a potion? Boom you're sent flying.
    Eating a steak? Weeeeeeeee!

    You get my point. The game requires a lot more 3 Dimensional thinking, and placement than most other titles. You get no lock on, you get no health bar to keep track of your progress towards the monsters death, you get nothing aside from some visual cues that tell you they are tired. In fact you won't know if their near dead until their limping away. The game makes you do all the work. Manage your stamina which shrinks periodically as you fight, health, attacking animations etc. The game IS NOT slow and clunky - unless you're an impatient person. Monster Hunter requires so much from the player that it can feel overwhelming, and "counter-intuitive" when in fact it's just made to be played a certain way. I rarely die in game I rarely go flying, I nearly always combo the monster into oblivion, etc. It takes learning, and getting used to, and while it sounds like the game is "counter-intuitive" requiring you to adapt to it... it's not. It's simply designed so as to hold your hand as little as possible. (Though this game has the MOST tutorials I've ever seen in a MH game)

    If you want DmC this is not it, this isn't GoW this isn't anything like that. It's also not really an RPG - It has elements that allude to RPG's yes, but even with the best armor you'll hit a wall where you'll get tossed like a fresh salad, unless you learn the systems the game has in place. It's time sink.

    Now... What I really want to get into. This game is best played with close friends. The team work, and fun you'll get out of the game with friends is endless. Grinding for rare materials becomes more fun, and the game really shines. Single player can drag, it's a decent time waster but it's not really "fun" perse' and even though most vets who play MH tell you to play offline first, I got my start by ONLY playing with friends, the game is drag by yourself. I mean the single player is fun, but again not really as much fun as multiplayer with buddies. The online sucks as it's filled with elitists who will kick you because of armor, and weapons... they also tend to feel like you're "wasting" their time if you die at all, so they tend to make you feel like crap for no reason.

    The game is not for people who are impatient and would rather play something faster, with easier reward and less technical thinking. It's not for people who want to play randoms - as the online is kind of toxic - and filled with folks who always tell you to "git gud". It's not for people who want a fun single player game, or a great story, it's not a bad story, but not really compelling if you know what I mean. It's for people who want something REALLY fun to play with friends, that offers one of the best co-op experiences I've ever had, a ton of content, high risk - high reward gameplay, and really makes you hone your skill so that your team can exceed past those really HARD quests.

    Gear - 20%

    That's where this game sits on a gameplay scale. The camera is pain though without the New XL's nub, or a Circle Pad Pro which you can order from Nintendos site for it's original MSRP (because they're stupid expensive anywhere else.) Camera is NECESSARY!    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played a total of 6 monster hunter games including MH4U. They are my favourite franchise and are worth every cent you spend on it. After putting about 200 hours into Monster hunter 4 Ultimate it is definitely the best monster hunter game to date. Capcom added new features like mounting monsters and a "farm" that multiples your items more nearly and requires less work to manage. Basically I am mainly going to cover the cons about monster hunter 4 ultimate ( IN MY OPINION)

    #1 (Monsters targeting) Monsters seem to target you multiple times before switching to another target. It gets frustrating when a monsters targets you 3+ time in a row. It makes the hunt seem unfair, your hunter simply doesn't enough stamina and or hp to withstand that many hits therefore killing you or almost killing you.

    #2 (monster moves) Every monster has their special move like rathian when she use flies in the air and uses her tail to poison the hunter/do lots of damage. Monsters use their special moves way too often and a lot of the times monsters use the same moves over and over. I know their attack patterns are random but that needs to be fixed.

    #3 (online multiplayer) Finding a lobby is not too big of a problem but needs improvements. Good example, if you are looking for your urgent quest. You are unable to find the "urgent quest" category in the search because it wasn't put into mh4u. For example if you were on you HR1 urgent quest, you half to look for HR1 lobby instead of HR1 Urgent quest. By adding that too the search it will clean up the lists and make it easier for people too do urgents.

    #4 (online multiplayer continued) Say if you wanted to do a specific monster like rathalos, their are monster specific lobbys but it can be the worst thing ever. People will always change it to a different monster and that makes you so annoyed. If you are not host you half to leave and find a new lobby. CAPCOM if we want to do RATHALOS make the lobby only allowed to pick RATHALOS quests.

    Not to mention the healing system; be prepared to stand still for 2 minutes while your character sips a potion delicately and then proudly exclaims to the world that he is now at slightly higher health capacity. Expect to do this every 30 seconds from the tutorial onward.

    Half the battles consist of at least 3 of the following **** occurrences, pick your favourites:
    - Being trapped underneath a large monster completely
    - Being knocked into another part of the map because you were standing within 2 miles from a cliff edge
    - Charging up an attack only to have the monster dash away at the last second
    -Getting stunned for 10 seconds every 3 minutes in a battle
    -Palicos being useless pieces of **** and not knocking you out of a sleep or stun
    -Having to sharpen your weapon LITERALLY EVERY 30 SECONDS which takes another 10 seconds to complete
    -Most of the weapons' damage sucks. I mained the insect glaive and it's a piece of **** even if you micromanage the essences on a monster for half the match the damage isn't enough to warrant playing it versus some of the other weapons. You can't even block.
    -Awful camera too zoomed in to see what you're doing, especially when a monster is on top of you
    -Weapon sharpened to anything less than perfect? Have fun doing 0 damage and having your attacks bounce off

    And I'm not even going to go into the farming system, which is tedious at best. The fishing system? Unnecessary, boring and has no depth to it whatsoever, just another means to farm.

    To get straight to the point, monster hunter 4 ultimate is the best installment to the series so far. If the title doesn’t give it away already, in all games in the series you are a hunter in a world inhabited by natural titans. You spend your time conquering these beasts and gathering supplies and resources that use to craft an arsenal of armours and weapons capable of tackling bigger and badder beasties. Your personal motivation varies from game to game. In previous titles there may have been a boss monster that you live to beat, or a monster threatening the village you live in. In this game you are part of a traveling caravan crew. You travel the land fulfilling the requests of the villagers you meet along the way.

    Right from the outset you are treated a vibrant world, with new features to find, new allies to meet and new monsters to beat. Despite the monster hunter franchise being more complex than ever, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is the best starting point for new players. It’s tutorial system is improved, it’s difficulty curve is much more balanced and with the new online play functionality, help is only a WiFi connection away (Or a couple steps if you’re using local wireless). And for seasoned monster hunters the brand new weapon types, mechanics and the verticality system will give you plenty to brandish your blade at.

    Overall it’s just much more fleshed out. Previous monster hunter games didn’t have a very tactile story mode and it was easy to feel disconnected with the NPC’s. In this game they easily meld story and game-play. You are a traveling family, the cut-scenes and dialogue give the characters more depth and emotion than any previous game. Monster hunter has never been a massively story-oriented game, but this one took a step in the right direction and the verticality system (Jumping and climbing mechanics that were unheard of in previous games) give more power to the play and gives Capcom the freedom to make much more dynamic and treacherous landscapes. (You can jump on top of a bloody dragon and stab it all shadow of the colossus/Beowulf style).

    The combat system is easy to pick up with simple combo, guard and evade mechanics and you’ll quickly find, out of the 14 weapon types 2-3 will raise to the surface as your favorite to use and you gain a natural affinity for them.

    Graphically, monster hunter has never excelled. It’s never looked sharp or HD. Even the wii U game was a port of the 3ds game and was limited in quality. But despite that, monster 4 ultimate has pushed that little bit further for brighter fields, deeper caves and fiercer monsters. It gets a 6.5/10

    Game-play wise, there hadn’t been a day since I bought the game that I have wanted to put it down. Every felled creature feels so satisfying, ever hammer slammed or blade chopped reminds you of the tangible strife it takes to be the best hunter you can be. It’s fantastic. 8/10

    With regards to lifespan monster hunter freedom unite (a previous game in the series) took me 300 hours to reach the final monster and monster hunter 4 ultimate has even more monsters than any previous game in the series. I’m 40 hours in and still have so much more to do, and with 3 file slots and a wealth of different weapon types to master, there is plenty of replay

And why they use Prairie Dog model from WoW when they created cats? Big weapons is not useful if you fight against small monsters and it is irritate.     Looks good on paper but at the end of the day I prefer MH3U. I miss the water levels and don't get any joy out of leaping onto monsters in this one.
    It's still a very good game and online play is great but from someone that has played all the PSP versions of the game and MH3U on 3ds this one is the least inspiring.

    If you're new the MH Universe, start and end with the Wii U MH3U version. It's easily the best of all versions including in multi-player voice chat. Avoid this cheap attempt at all costs, and don't bother to waste your time on it's cheap vertical mechanics, which are a poor replacement for water areas.    … Expand

    If there's one game to get in 2015, it's Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate!

    Having played Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, I welcome this new version, which mercifully removes the horrible underwater battles and replace it with climbing, jumping and mounting monsters!!! I played 100+ hours on MH3U, but after just 10+ hours, boy I can see myself playing even more MH4U due to its much more fun gameplay, seamless online multiplayer gaming, beautiful graphics and of course, the crazy as monsters! I'm glad I took the time to learn MH3U so with MH4U it's a lot easier for me to just pick up and go.

    There is SO much replay value, and hunting the same monster species feels different each time because of the monster AI, location where it is, etc. The new weapons (my favourite being Insect Glaive, having used Long Sword in the past) are just super fun to use. And of course, I often get hit by the monsters as I get distracted on trying to mount them...! Fun fun fun!

    If you haven't tried it MH4U is actually much more newbie friendly in that it guides you through most of the stuff so you don't fumble (like in MH3U). Get on the hunt and see you online!    … Expand

    You'll always miss some things from the previous Monster Hunter, but any of you long-time players think about how funny it is that in new MH you play, you'll end up saying "Man, I miss back in -insert last version- here"...To EVERY version. Even though you'll miss some things from a previous Monster Hunter, we'll always learn to love the current versions features just as much.

    The online experience is pretty insane (in a good way) considering how large the community is. Since I'm Canadian, I'm always afraid about the size of community that plays games, and how fast I'll be matched with other players, but I was playing with my friend a few minutes ago, and while we decided to watch a quick 2 minute YouTube video, we had 2 more people join that are looking to do the exact same quest.

    The framerate is unbelievable, too. A game like MH on a portable system is always pretty remarkable, and even when you take the fact that the map is preloaded into account, the speed at which you change areas is still as fast as ever. I was playing with somebody that had Spanish commands (which you can customize, by the way), and there was no lag that I was aware of. If there was, then you'd have to be scrutinizing the player for any hint of it.

    The only thing that I can think of that could make the game better, and the only reason why I'm not rating this a 10/10 is because I wish the graphics of this Monster Hunter would have a large amount of anti-aliasing since you're playing on a relatively small screen. Unfortunately, if you're playing on a regular 3ds, you'll have a difficult time seeing everything clearly, since me (personally) not having the most easy time seeing everything clearly on a 3DSxl is an issue for me.

    But my eyesight isn't anywhere near perfect, so the reason why I'm giving it a 9/10 could easily be based on something that only applies to me.

    Lastly,
    None of what I (and everybody else that reviewed the game) said makes any difference since I'm 95% sure that you guys already insta-bought the game and are just checking to see if it got the reviews/ratings that it deserves. ;)    … Expand

    The best monster hunter in the series, the new abilities like jumping and mounting are incredible satisfying, the is is the a game that you will spend thousand hours in to it! , the replay value is gigantic must buy!

    As a long time Monster Hunter veteran, I believe this is the game for both new and veterans alike, as this game provides a decent tutorial while also giving a sense of difficulty for veteran hunters, encountered later in the game in High Rank and G-Rank quests. With all of the content in this game (like all Monster Hunter games!), Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is truly a masterpiece.

    There honestly aren't enough negative things to say about this game to merit a score any less than a 10. The gameplay is phenomenal, much better than MH3U in my opinion. The graphics are beautiful for the 3ds and I absolutely love the Palicoes. All in all this is a fantastic addition to the monster hunter franchise and since I've already sunk in 15 hours; I can't wait to put in another 150.

    This game looks better than previous games, the new vertical gameplay really adds massive diversity to how you can battle monsters, they can change the environment, some structures and environment are breakable by monsters. The only lag I noticed is when I was playing with someone the Australia (I'm in the US). His character was lagging but I was not effected nor was he on his screen but I did see the big monster have hiccup about 2 times. The monsters seem to have more moves now which is a great addition to this game already having more monsters than all the other MH releases.

    For those who haven't tried monster hunter before:
    The beginning of the game doesn't have a lot going on and you are just learning the ropes, getting some materials, and hunting some small critters. The game will progressively get better and much MUCH harder. This game is challenging and rewarding but requires grind so if you hate grind don't play this game, if you love grind or like a sweat spot for grinding then this is the game for you!

    The best entry in the series. Absolutely love the experience so far! I can easily see how I will sink in hundreds of hours into this one...

    I only really got into the series with MH3U. It's difficulty and complexity got me hooked. But this game is complex, difficult but also awesome on a whole new level.

    I definitely think MH4U is the best Monster Hunter game, but I did think MH3U did stuff better. Many areas in 4U were repetitive and all the old underwater monsters were gone so I couldn't fight stuff like Lagiacrus. All in all, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is great but it could be improved a little.

    Ive played the previous monster hunter, monster hunter 3 ultimate and though a great addition to the monster hunter franchise, i cant recommend it for beginners. Monster Hunter 4 changes that with weapon tutorials and an actual story thats good enough to keep you going until the end. MH4, to me is also the best monster hunter to date, with its new features like mounting (makes me wish iIve played the previous monster hunter, monster hunter 3 ultimate and though a great addition to the monster hunter franchise, i cant recommend it for beginners. Monster Hunter 4 changes that with weapon tutorials and an actual story thats good enough to keep you going until the end. Being a Hunter for about 5 years now I know the controls and have no complaints but I will say it now: New comers: the controls will feel clunky at first and this game will kick your ass. It happens to nearly everyone who picks up the game for the first time. Memorizing monsters, their patterns and the areas they appear in is all part of the game and until you find them, the game will feel a bit slow paced. Then you find them and killing them is a blast. bring potions and wet stones to every fight because you will need them and be on your A game because this game as i said will KILL you. stick to it though nothing feels better then downing the beasts.

    Now that is out of the way. Vet hunters, there is still a chance that you will get killed here to, and any changes made to the game you will know instantly. Like Mounting and the 2 new weapons. there also the farm does not show up early in the game this time( or at all at this point i only have about 30 hours in the game so far) so you will need to get back to digging for herbs and mushrooms once more.

    As i am writing this I am playing the game. It is addicting. And fun but it is not for everyone in the world. If you want more thoughts on the game I recommend watching ProJared's review on the game.

    One of the most gorgeous games on 3DS, the gameplay is challenging lots of content and easily 200 hours of online play.
    Trully a remarkable feat to put such an amazing game in a handheld.

I think that streak has ended with Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, however.

    Whether you're a long time fan or someone looking to get into the series, MH4U is the pinnacle of the MH series. The tutorial has been streamlined and doesn't get in the way of veterans while also providing a deep and superbly paced learning curve for newbies. You are only taught what you need to know at any point in the game. No longer are you bombarded by jargon and features you don't understand all at once.

    The combat is mostly the same methodical weighted combat that has existed over each other version of the series, which is good. Much like the Dark Souls franchise, every swing, hit, and miss is felt. And it makes you want to get better at the weapon you choose. And boy are there weapons to choose from. What's great about MH is that every weapon is so different and unique in playstyle, that it completely changes the way you play the game. A great sword user's experience in MH for example will be greatly different from that of a bowgun user, and so forth. It makes you feel that much more unique when you master a single weapon style. And in MH4U, they've added two more brand new weapon styles; the insect glaive and the charge blade, adding even more diversity to the line-up. The insect glaive being the most fun addition (in my opinion) as it allows you to vault and potentially mount monsters with a new mechanic that I think was inspired by Capcom's other franchise Dragon's Dogma.

    The new mount mechanic sounds simple but it adds a whole new layer of fun, especially when combined with a more intuitive and easier way to climb ledges and cliffs. Jumping off of a giant cliff and landing on the back of a giant flying monster beneath you while stabbing and simultaneously trying to hold on is exhilarating. It is by far my favorite new mechanic of the game. It also seems to have replaced swimming. Which is a welcome removal.

    Along with the change in environmental traversing, the environments themselves have been redesigned to cater to the new mounting mechanic. Not only that, but the new approach to the "storyline" of the game means that you will travel to many new areas and locales. On top of this, there are new things called "Expeditions". Expeditions allow you to travel to a new "area" without leaving your current hub. These have an infinite time limit and are a bit more linear in nature. Your ultimate goal being to get from the start to the end and completing objectives along the way. It's a nice change of pace from the normal large map hunting and a great location palette cleanser. Expeditions along with the "caravanning" story arch make for a great way to make each area feel fresh and new.

    Add a streamlined multiplayer experience that makes finding games easier than ever, along with a new hunter card sharing system and quest trading system, and you have the most complete and fun Monster Hunter yet. I can't recommend MH4U enough. Go grab it!    … Expand

    This game has some great ideas and mechanics, but overall I have found it to be too much of a grind and more about "crafting" than actually killing things... The game could be great if you're into the crafting aspects, but for me its just not enough action. + the combat is extremely clunky and unfamiliar... I imagine it would be fine once you get used to it. The quests are    "meh"

    The quests are overall pretty repetitive and often frustrating when your objective takes a long time for such a simple task.

    The best monster hunter to date filled with added features and a new experience online. I would truly recommend for all. The game series will once again make me play on for over 100 hours and i am sure it will for many people.

    So one might wonder, what makes this game so good to get such ratings then?... Well, you know how most games slowly make you fight millions of baddies through many copy & paste rooms until you unlock the boss which has a move or two that are fresh? Well, in monster hunter every baddie you have to fight is a boss! Every one is different, exciting and... HARD... The game is brutal, it will beat you up, chew you, set you on fire, throw you off a cliff and then sit on you; and that's what makes it so amazing... because once you kill the monster that's been giving you grief, the feeling you get is one of a kind (best description: you know a movie where you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY HATE the bad guy? Like the "new" addition of multiplayer. Though it is better than no multiplayer at all, it still isn't as good as the online component found in MH3U's wii u port. Which is disappointing. As while voip on the wiiu/3ds was never that good, you can't even use text chat during a hunt, just some preset call outs that you can only customize prior to your mission. With all things considered though, this is a game that will last you a long time and offer more playtime than even smash bros. Just be sure you have the patience the game requires, not just for how the combat works and rewards you. But also for the few quirks this game tries to hide.… Expand

    The most accessible game in the series, "Monster Hunter 4" running on the New 3DS looks beautiful, runs smoothly and makes hunting these gigantic beasts all the more satisfying. With enough new improvements, additions and better multiplayer, you'll be playing this game more then any other game on the 3DS, next to the 3rd Monster Hunter, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

    It is my first monster hunter... and... is fuking AWESONE, the are maps have a lot of details and is so wonderfull, the monster moddels are so cool, the gameplay are funny and the sound track are perfect.

    My only problem in the game is the controll, is a bit hard and complex.

With that said, games should not be judged on what people think they ought to be, but rather on what the developers are trying to accomplish and how well they succeed.     Monster Hunter is, and always has been, about the hunt. Think of this as a sport simulation, where instead of it being some lame sport you get to hunt giant dragons and t-rexes. The games story keeps you engaged enough, but the epic battles will keep be what keeps you coming back for 200+ hours of game play. And trust me, nobody does epic battles like the Monster Hunter series.

    The weapon mechanics are at times DELIBERATELY clunky feeling to new players, just as wielding a 200lb great sword would be in real life... this mechanic is there to make players study their fearsome opponents to avoid being punished for poorly thought out attacks and button mashing. The fighting in this game is meant to be an exercises in tactics and strategy, so PLEASE ignore any negative reviews on here complaining that they didn't beat the game by running up to a 30 foot tall monster and mashing the x button. Capcom has done a wonderful job of implementing balanced weapon system that rewards people for playing the game with intelligence. Again... not a button masher, don't expect one.

    I put a little over 200 hours into Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the 3ds, and really my ONLY gripe was the lack of online multiplayer. MH4U comes in with spades here, and playing with others online is wonderful.

    In the end, you will not find a better entertainment value then this game. This is an easy 100 hours of fun, with most dedicated fans milking upwards of 300 hours out of the $40 cartridge. If you enjoy looting, strategic fighting, and think playing a game filled with nothing but the BEST epic boss battles you could imagine, you owe it to yourself to buy this games.    … Expand

It is clear that the Monster Hunter formula has been perfected in this latest installment. Hunting, gathering, and crafting has never been more fun. You can easily play for a hundred hours before you have done everything. The amount of content in the game is incredible value for the price. I take off 1 point because I really wanted to see a Wii U release. Despite this fact the game is still an action packed adventure that I won't be putting down anytime soon.… Expand

    I've played the Japanese version for quite some time, so I've put in a solid 300 hours into the game, and I've STILL got much more content unseen.

    This game is by far the best Monster Hunter. It's more refined, polished, expansive, and it still stays true to it's roots.     Taking out water combat and adding vertical combat into it's formula was a huge success, and adds yet another strategic element into the game.
