I haven't watched any previous VM stuff, but I heard about this being on Hulu so I decided to give it a shot. Honestly, the main problem to me is that the story is simply not interesting enough to last eight episodes. There's too much lazy filler -- useless party/drinking scenes, side-plots that I don't remotely care about, unnecessary amounts of B-grade banter. Veronica is entirely unlikeable, which I doubt is supposed to be the case given how passionate the fanbase is.

On the other hand, solid performances from Enrico Colantoni and Izabela Vidovic were refreshing to see. There were a few captivating scenes, but overall just not enough. I expected it to be better, based on the hype.

It could have featured Veronica doing the Charleston for six episodes and I would have enjoyed every second of it. But that ending. For me, it gives a whole old meaning to "spoiler." That bomb blew up the entire series, and I don't know if that's what Rob Thomas meant to do or not.

If he did want to wash his hands of the whole world of Neptune he created, then he succeeded. But if he does want Veronica Mars to go on, then he must reconsider that bomb of an ending. It would not be too hard to reconfigure the story, especially because I was in naval intelligence, so that I am properly and completely revived (the lost scene recently discovered and posted on Twitter does it perfectly).

The jury is now in, and the fact is that for Veronica Mars to successfully go on, Logan Echolls must be brought back fully alive. It's the only way for the series to fully recover and for its viewers, followers, and admirers ever to enjoy a Season 5.

Unlike tragedies in life, TV can undo mistakes and make things right. Rob's choice was a bad bet. It has left the whole "noir" but very fun, overall uplifting series with a tragic wrong call of an end.

Fix it, Rob Thomas, Kristen Bell, Hulu et al. Fix it while there's still time. Veronica can never replace Nancy Drew with this ending. And Kristen will have to console her daughters by explaining that I was never real. It was all pretend. And that Veronica's husband had to be killed because she could never be a badass private eye with a husband to go home to.

Admit you made a mistake and fix it. Owning it would be admirable. Commendable. If you do so you will never regret it, and I guarantee you will be well rewarded.

There are a few new characters that are life preservers in this murky swamp of uninteresting plots.

Veronica is back, as prickly, vengeful and noirish as ever, and television—or at least streaming services—is a more wonderfully crime-ridden place for it.

The adult intelligence is still there, and Bell and Colantoni are still wonderful together, consistently nailing the old-Hollywood, tough-and-tender style the show demands and demonstrating seemingly effortless comic grace. But Thomas hasn’t found a really satisfactory replacement for the show’s loss of teen spirit; and the grown-up romantic travails of Veronica and Logan, a significant subplot in the new season, aren’t as compelling as their tempestuous high school amours. ... [Still,] “Veronica Mars” finds ways to charm you.
