First-rate. .... The search for the sordid truth brings Sunny and Jessie closer together. I look forward to more of their partnership. [4 - 24 Sep 2023, p.8]

It all bodes well for Unforgotten’s changed dynamic.

It is so classily put together that I am now securely strapped in for the ride.

Unforgotten is as much about the central main cast as it is about the guest stars and the case that unfolds throughout each season. The performances in these five new episodes, particularly from Yates as troubled Rhys and Laird as complicated Ebele, underline the drama as continuing its streak of incredibly strong storytelling.

Sunny and Jessie have a lot to work through; I don’t doubt they will find some common ground in doing the job properly, whether leading by head (Jessie) or heart (Sunny).

Some shows fail when they try to carry on with a new lead – Morecambe detective drama The Bay hasn’t been the same since Morven Christie was replaced by another actress, Marsha Thomason – but Unforgotten will thrive. Keenan is great, Bhaskar provides continuity, and the format is unshakeable.

[Detective Chief Inspector Jessica James'] underlings call her ma’am (“mum” in the British pronunciation) but she tells them “guv” will suffice. The show could use more of that dry humor.

So long as you accept its limitations and are not in the market for something excessively cerebral, Unforgotten is a serviceable antidote to the relentless twists and turns, red herrings and double bluffs, of some of its competitors.

Nicola Walker’s departure left big shoes to fill, but Sinéad Keenan brings new energy as her character brings new challenges - and Sanjeev Bhaskar is terrific as ever. Great to have this back! Honestly? THAT is what they thought will make a female cop interesting? Holy ***), nothing to try and fix the loss of the previous lead and, I have to say, nothing fun about all this at all. Yes, the show is SUPPOSED to be depressing, but what a far cry it is from the first season, when you were instantly invested, instantly curious about the cast and suspects and the whole process, if slow, was almost believable. Here it's just ... I'm not invested anymore, sorry. Full Review »

We were disappointed as we found the plot confusing and less than credible. It was not helped by the commercial breaks of course. The actingWe were disappointed as we found the plot confusing and less than credible. It was not helped by the commercial breaks of course. The acting was fair but we keep coming back to the writing and probably the directing. Plot and sequencing were weak and I feel sure the director should have been able to encourage the cast to be more believable, with a few exceptions. We have recently viewed Happy Valley 3 so the competition was very stiff. We rated that as 10/10. We would not be tempted to see another series of Unforgotten. Full Review »
