    Promising start to the new season: as always, the series begins with a disparate batch of characters that can seem confusing, but rewards attention as the show slowly reveals the connecting threads to the viewer and the detectives.     [Detective Chief Inspector Jessica James'] underlings call her ma’am (“mum” in the British pronunciation) but she tells them “guv” will suffice. The show could use more of that dry humor.
