Very promising so far but be aware that the show will explain nothing to you. Its definitely for the book readers, so I higly recommend that you watch a story recap of the books on Youtube before you start with the show.

    Pros:
    1) Henry Cavill - great actor and a big reason why this show is enjoyable.

My opinion is that The Witcher: Season 1 is gerat ! Yes, there are some inaccuracies against the book and games but Geralt is great. Henry Cavill is excelent Geralt. Yennefer and Ciri are not bad played too. Story telling is a bit confusing but all stories are gerat. :)

The actor who plays the Herald is chosen very high quality , it is unlikely that somebody would be better. And the music is just fire, great respect for the writers who were responsible for the music, because it creates a unique atmosphere of the world.
Of the minuses is worth noting that the Witcher had a second sword on the back and the locket is not the one that needs to be

All in all awsome show. Too bad they didn't make a few more episodes do that the whole season would be more than just a long introduction but they managed to deal with the issue of connecting different short stories into something that will be a good base for future seasons. It is professionally made and I really did not notice any weak or cringe moments that I was so afraid to see. On the other hand there were some really strong performances - especially from the lead character. It has a bit of comic book style aesthetics in some of the scenes, but this is ok for me. I do not have problem with someone not liking it, but come on - this is at least well made show. Are you so harsh about your own work? Sometimes I feel like I enjoy stuff more than the "anti-woke/gamer" crowd because I'm not holding these "probably not gamers, probably not Witcher-book reading" production teams and actors to incredibly high standards. Not excusing the boring parts, there are some of those, but I just came for a story set in a world where there are monsters, where the men are sometimes worse than the monsters.. and our friend Geralt of Rivia, of course:

The people mad at the show for "not being true to the books" or "being too diverse/woke..." I mean, SURE, whatever, there's some stuff I didn't like too about the casting, but judge them on their performances, not their race. I still really enjoyed binge-watching this though. Though I was sometimes confused about stuff because timeline/plot jump without context sometimes. 0-voting because you hate "woke" & "diversity" can feel like projection from crybabies sometimes. And it's tough adapting "complex on paper" to "more simple on screen," and plus, c'mon folks, it's the FIRST SEASON, JFC..

Critiquing story/plot in the sense that this was probably never ever going to be 100% true to the books is fair, but people need to let up on bashing Netflix just for adding some diversity. I understand that people want to "see themselves" on screen, and that's fair, even if not "accurate." I DO care about the cast being good though, and some people were just kinda alright. Anyways, just letting the reader know ahead of time that tons of the mad people are just being children that wish everything were THEIR conservative, purist tastes.

Played W2 & W3, and a bit of W1, and read only a bit of the first book. I think the professional critics are rating this too low, but there are definitely some things I did not like. Here are things I liked first though:

    -Superman as Geralt
-The actresses that played Renfri, Yennefer & Solaia
    -Geralt & Yen scenes
    -Good dialogue, often funny
-The show's "graphics" are pretty tasty
    -Great atmosphere
    -Some scenes are perfect
    -Feels like good fan-service
-Magic is mostly cool in this show

Okay now what I don't like:

-ONLY 8 EPISODES?! I NEED MY FIX.
-What's with all these NON-GERALT OF RIVIA SCENES? I'M HERE FOR MY BOY!
-Lots of random ass characters getting elevated storywise at the expense of Geralt of Rivia scenes. If you're going to take me away from Geralt of Rivia it should be for Ciri, Yennefer, Triss, Vesemir, etc (the Gang, so to speak), and even then I would rather you quickly come back to Geralt.
-IDK how I feel about the actress that plays Triss. Maybe it's because she looks nothing like the video games though.
-Actually, many characters don't look like how they are depicted in the games, which is gonna annoy people.
-I don't think this is too "new user" friendly. Would recommend this only to the already-initiated.
-Why so much focus on "Nilfgaard bad?"
-Not sure if Yen's main motivation is what it is in the books, but feels kinda random and makes her seem more "traditional" at the expense of her JUST being a powerful woman.
-Yennefer's dress with the cages on the shoulders makes her look skinny, Yennefer is already more of a full-bodied woman in the games
-Not sure if Geralt would ever yell at Dandelion, but that definitely hurt my soul :(
-Ciri's scenes are just awful sometimes, not the actor's fault, but her arc is just kinda boring,
    -"NO" GERALT IN SEASON FINALE
-Some of the characters act stupid, in ways that undermine previous behaviors or just change attitude drastically at certain points.
-Some scenes are kinda bad, ngl, I love CDPR & I'm HEAVILY anticipating next season but yeah, it's rough sometimes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I spent like 5000 hours on the game, even though I hated it at first. Just like the game, the series takes time to get into, no matter if you roughly know what's going on or not. The did a really poor job at signposting that all the episodes play at different timelines, with the mother of Ciri, Pavetta, looking so similar to her that I was totally lost when she got married to a hedgehog knight. In general I love the tone of the movie between brutality and humor, but especially when you have played the third game, you'll find the colour of the series a bit flat and bland. The world painted in the books and games was very beautiful and colourful in its glory (Toussaint) or misery (Vellen). Here it looks mostly meh. Still, the characters are awesome and i dug the way they did Geralt, Yennefer and the supporting cast. I for one cannot wait for Season 2 after the final battle of season 1. This was a very promising opener and hints at a potentially awesome franchise. Expand

I'm not really sure why this show is getting so many "0" scores. I'm also not entirely sure if most of the critics and viewers who gave it such low ratings actually watched the entire series? From the couple of die-hard fans of the books that I spoke to prior to the show's release, it was evident that they were likely to be unhappy about the show regardless of how it actually turned out. All that being said, I think there were certainly a few areas that could have been better. It took several episodes for the show to really get going, and establish who the main characters were. Without any prior knowledge of the franchise, I can definitely see how someone could feel a bit lost after the first episode. By the end, I thought that the characters and their motivations etc were satisfactorily fleshed out. Still, the last episode felt more like a half-way point for what the story arc of Season 1 should have been, had twice as many episodes been produced instead of the paltry 8 episodes. Overall, I'd give The Witcher a hopeful 7/10. I think that if the show runners listen to critics/fans about the shortcomings of Season 1, they can certainly be remedied when the next season begins production early this year. Expand

I have seen the first three episodes and so far i think it's more than good. I'm very weak for high fantasy and gothic styles and that's something that the series circles around. I have played the game (Never read the books though) but is more interested in lore and geography. For those who are new in the Witcher world it can be messy to under where they are as Ciri is in Cintra, Yennefer in Aedirn while Geralt is in Redania, Kaedwen and in the third episode Temeria. That something that Game of Thrones did right they presented the regions first and their nature so the viewer always knew where they were. The character's journeys feels very distant from each other and it feel more like we watch three different shows at the same time. Yen's back story revealed is both good and bad. It's kind of what one expected of Yen and very fitting but on the same time is the mystery around the character gone. When it's come to casting non-white characters don't really bother me that much especially on the less relevant characters but they shouldn't do that on Triss who is very relevant and she look nothing like the canon. The show also lacks the slavic representation that the games did good. In conclusion i like the three main characters. All has good stories and the acting is very good. I also like the high fantasy theme and that the world is circled around magic. They need to explain where the character is and make the stories closer so we acrually watches one show and not three show on the same time

I actually really liked what they did with different time periods in the storytelling. It creates a little confusion, but in my experience a good kind of confusion that eventually leads to an 'A-ha!' of realization. The only criticism there is that the writing does sometimes struggle to convey not the time period, but the passage of time, leading to some whiplash as we move through each character's story.

Cavill's depiction of Geralt is really good. I was skeptical of his casting, and really skeptical after seeing early promotional set photos, but in the end I was really impressed. Of the two other key roles, I thought Anya was pretty good in the early parts of the story where Yennefer is still unsure of herself, but struggles to muster the charisma of peak Yen. Freya as Ciri does a solid job with what she is called on to do, but her part isn't as demanding so far. Of the rest of the cast, I thought the real standout was Jodhi May, really knocking that character out of the park at different parts of her story.

Other things that spring to mind are that the CGI is pretty 'meh' throughout, occasionally threatening to derail the experience. Dialogue writing is competent throughout, and better than that in places. Fight choreography seemed like a solid B+ to me. Cinematography was consistently very good, often striking without foolishly trying to reproduce Wild Hunt's amazing visuals.

On the whole, I found it to be very compelling, and solid across the board, despite being a very ambitious show.

    So finally finished.

Whole season is pretty good. It gets from me on the great shows scale rating so that's something at least. I agree with people saying that as a book adaptation it kinda sucked. Had it's ups and downs. Ending was underwhelming. Show felt very modern for example Dandelion calling his lute "sexy" took me very by surprise. Some music too felt very modern.

    Ending was underwhelming.

Show felt very modern for example Dandelion calling his lute "sexy" took me very by surprise. Some music too felt very modern.

Nilfgaard looks like some crazy religious fanatics.

Most short stories here are very rushed and sometimes completely miss what book wanted to say/show.

    Dandelion was amazing.
Geralt was amazing. BUT, he never uses his medailon.
Yennefer sometimes great sometimes not. She's too cute for her role. And her relationship with Geralt wasn't very convincing that they love each other. Or at least Geralt her.
Ciri, I'm disappointed with her storyline. I think it would have been much, much better if they made it according to books. The viewers would get much better feeling from it.
    Foltest was a joke.
Triss... at least she had a bit of red in her hair.
    Tissaia was great.
Calanthe too, but they could change her hair. Everyone in her family has blonde hair but only she has black or brown? Why?

So some picked actors weren't that great.
And now imagine, you're new in the series, watched show and now you're going for a book and get to part where Geralt sleeps with Fringilla because she reminds him of Yennefer. You will probably be "Is he smoking something? How? She looked nothing like Yennefer."

The timeline... confusing af at first. I think some newcomers will be confused too and maybe will stop watching before everything gets explained.

    CGI meh.

Some scenes like from Yennefer or Ciri seemed unnecessary.

    Fightning scenes great.

I enjoyed details like Geralt picking up herbs.

There's much more, but I'm too lazy to write everything. 7 or 8 /10.... can't decide. I wanted to give it an 8 but then I remembered fuked timeline, oh and they disappointed me in adapting my favourite story with Sylvan, so 7/10.

Shortly said: Show was good when it was going according to book. And not because I have an issue with being it bad adaptation, but because how it's written in book, it would much better develop releationships in the show and feeling the audience has for these characters.
Making it 15-20 episode show wouldn't hurt it at all.

Not gonna lie, I wouldn't shed a tear if the show didn't have second season, but I'll give it another chance.

I'll say I was almost shocked at the high quality of this video series. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich was the creator and showrunner for the series - which I did not know until after I watched the first episode. She has a very respectable filmography and I assume she has a very large role in the high quality of the series.

Obviously, not everyone is going to like an action/adventure/fantasy video series - but, if this is the type of subject material you favor, I would highly recommend that you watch this series.

It probably needs to be pointed out that Lauren Schmidt Hissrich first noteworthy writing effort was for the liberal/leftest American TV series "The West Wing". Hissrich has a strong liberal/leftest ideology that she imparts to this series. Some viewers may not be able to accept this because they are so strongly opposed to her political and social beliefs and/or because it is not within the original spirit of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski works. Regardless, the series itself is of high quality within the context of writing, casting, acting, directing, editing, costume, set design, etc, etc.

I just now took a look at the Metacritic user-ratings .This show is obviously not a "10" and it is obviously not a "0" - but, somewhere betwixt. There is an obvious highly emotional reaction to how Hissrich has deviated from the source material and re-imagined the Witcher into a woke/social-justice platform. I'm ignoring that issue for the most part in my review as I prefer to ignore political/religious/social issues in regard to fictional entertainment.

    Creativity/Imagination:
    - Plenty of original concepts of magic and bestiality. Subverting Netflix tropes (oh you think all women characters are going to be barbie-perfect? Nope). That makes things less predictable.
    - Some crucial scenes are actually the least imaginative and cookie-cutter. Namely the first scene of Ep1 and the last scene of Ep8. It's really sad that the first and last episodes have the weakest moments when they should be the strongest.

    Acting:
    - Great moments delivered by actors for Geralt, Yennifer, Ciri, Jaskier

Overall this is very well written but newcomers to the series will find it hard to grasp the timelines and relationships between characters in the first few episodes. Overall the writing is good and only improves as the timeline becomes clearer and story arcs begin to converge.
Henry Cavill is perfect as Geralt of Rivia, an absolutely spot on, flawless performance of what i hope will become an iconic character. Other characters have peaks and troughs. Joey Batey as Jaskier (Dandelion) captures his character perfectly, but we don't see enough of him as the show progresses. Anya Chalotra as Yen starts strong, dips in the middle and improves again towards the end. Freya Allen as Ciri leaves a lot to be desired, and the character is difficult to like as a result (which will be a problem if she is to be a focus going forward). Some characters are completely lackluster (Triss and Fringilla to name a few).

Fans of the books and games will also be quick to point out the changes in certain characters appearances, which isn't a problem in and of itself, but the actors they have hired just simply cant capture the essence of the characters they are trying to portray.

Overall this is a great first season that has plenty of room to grow in a fantasy world rich with stories to be told. Realistically its an 8 out of 10, but I have given it a 10 to help offset some of the ridiculously reviews by those obsessed by the books/games.

There was a large focus on Anya Chalotra as Yennifer and her roll was really well acted. She has leading lady stuff. Joey Batey as Jaskier (or Dandelion) was just annoying and kinda miscast. There was a lot of noise about Anna Shaffer being miscast as Triss. She is a different interpretation of the character. You don't really see enough of her to know either way.
Overall if it was a new property, everyone would be raving about how good it is, and how it clearly has the potential to get better. I'd say it's just pretty good. I agree it has potential to improve.
Two elements really stuck out to me. Occasional "modern" dialogue thrown in, to appeal to the audience (jarring. Fail). Also the characters relative ages over time. Ignoring that was annoying.
Overall though the main thing is they just didn't trust the audience to stay around. So all the stories feel rushed. They would be better if the show was longer and the stories were allowed to breath more. That one is on the directors and the show runners. Hopefully they've learned their lesson by next season.

I am happy to say that I was wrong in all my worries. Henry Cavill is amazing as Geralt. He nails the voice and overall feel of Geralt. He is easily the best part of the show. The rest of the characters are well rounded for the most part, and the acting is very good. Coming up next would be the cinematography and look of the show. Much of the time, it has a very dark and dreary feel to it, but it fits the story well. The visual effects are pretty good as well, especially the magic effects. The fight scenes are some of the best I've ever seen in a tv show. Last, but certainly not least, is the quality of the music. Besides the awesome "Toss a Coin to your Witcher" song, the more dramatic themes and songs are amazing to listen to.
While I enjoyed my time with this show a great deal, there were one or two things that I feel could have been done better. The biggest problem that I noticed right from the first episode, was the quality of the creature's visual effects. Whether pure CGI, costume, or practical, the majority of them just didn't look high quality. The only other problem I found, especially in the earlier episodes, was the timeline. It was a bit hard to follow due to the lack of notation on screen as to what specific time line I was watching at a given time.
Overall, this is a great show for anybody that likes medieval style fantasy. It can be a bit hard to follow at times, and some of the effects are sort of cheesy looking, but I believe the acting, fight scenes, and general aesthetic, more than make up for these small short comings. I am looking forward for season two.

However, the last episodes of the season are incredibly well done, having some outstanding scenes with breathtaking visuals. The CGI in general is a mixed bag though, where sometimes it looks stunning, whilst other times it can look rather fake. The scenery looks overly bright in some scenes and it gets a bit annoying after a while, but that's only present whenever there's a lot of sunlight. However, the visuals still manage to deliver spectacles and marvels. The other thing that I am not really impressed by is some of the casting of the main characters, but it isn't much of an issue now after watching the performances. Henry Cavill plays Geralt perfectly and it is apparent that he's very passionate about the role and the project, being a Witcher fan himself. Yennefer, even though at first she seemed miscasted, Anya Chalotra actually has turned out to be a decent choice for the character. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love Lord of the Rings or Game of Throne. What I love about The Witcher is that it is neither of those shows which makes it Perfect!!!. Amazing performances by Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan and the rest of the cast. Great character development and story telling. Love the fight scenes and the world building. I found that the writers did a great job weaving the different storytime lines together masterfully. The ending was great, you get a sense of resolution and want to see more. Worth every minute. Everything that had to do with Geralt was awesome. Henry is perfect in this role and I loved every second of him on screen. That said, the other storylines feel a bit dragged. Overall, it was fun, well executed, and I cannot wait for season 2. (Casting of Triss is killing me tho)

I got more than I expected, I can understand the inaccuracies but generally the western interpretation delighted me, -1 for the selection of some actors, but the main ones are splendid.

As a first-contact with this franchise, I loved it and want to see more. Best part was the CGI and how much it was used to do mages justice, with large-scale/epic spells (like in Warcraft), not micro-magic BS like in Harry Potter or other kids' Fantasy shows. Then Cavill was impressive for being able to play a very different character, more sombre and brooding than what he's been famous for. Good and very good acting all around, some weaknesses in the dialogues here and there, some strange choices in the storytelling (mainly the timeline treatment, though I did also enjoy having the challenge to piece it all together - might be something that makes me rewatch it before S2 comes out). Greatest disappointment would be how high my expectations went after seeing the first part of Yen's evolution and finding out online that she's supposedly a very powerful sorceress, only to see her presented as... slightly above-average on confidence, knowledge and power for the rest of the season. Maybe they're reserving the more impressive Yen for later, when we start to get bored of seeing Geralt using the same strengths over and over. Oh, and one of the strongest points of this first season is a certain 1-on-1 swordfight scene that was better than any swordfight I'd seen in the last ~20 years. Expand

Really annoying, why did metacritic introduce this?

This show is amazing, it did what shows are supposed to do, it took a person that had never heard of this story franchise, and made it to where I can't wait for more. Well done Netflix, now don't screw it up like they did with GOT.

Wow. Firstly it’s not perfect but as a fan of the books and games it’s everything I wanted. I’m not a diversity person I don’t care for forced things but this was really natural and fitting I did it care out the racial changes. Henry is Geralt he knows him in and out and it’s an awesome series. Want more after watching all of it the opening day. Watch it it’s great.

This show is not perfect. but what it does right, is enough for me to recommend. The Hollywood-izing of the Slavic culture is unfortunate, but is isn't that egregious. Henry is the perfect fit for Geralt, and most of the other casting is passable.

Lots of good stuff in this series. Superman is perfect as Geralt. The actress who plays Yennefer is rad, she pulls it off. It seems like most of the really bad reviews for this series (users score) has to do with casting and that the show isn't white enough, ya I am not kidding. FYI, I only played about 5hrs of Witcher 3(RPG isn't really my cup of tea) and have not read the books yet.Lots of good stuff in this series. Superman is perfect as Geralt. As a mindless fantasy rollercoaster, Geralt’s journey is five stars all the way to tea-time. Sadly, for those who like brains with their brawn, it may be more of a slog.

It takes a while for viewers to learn how these characters are connected, via an exasperating Westworld-esque narrative knot that takes much of the season to unfurl. ... The Witcher heightens our confusion by fumbling details that would have helped it set a cohesive tone. Dialogue vacillates, from line to line, between theatrical fantasy-speak and modern colloquialisms (“Dragons are, in fact, a thing!”).
