I don't often review things... but with this season and what will be a series... I can not stress enough how great it is to get a good book and video game adaptation to a TV Series... I can not stress enough how great it is to get a good book and video game adaptation to a TV Series... Now if you come into this not having read "The Last Wish" book by Andrzej Sapkowski, or if you have not even looked at any of the games; then you will be a bit confused at where the storyline is taking place - it is also a particular type of story telling, which, in this particular show, works very well at showing key stories of Geralt in the past (book The Last Wish) while showing you current events and establishing characters where I'm sure the second season will take place with the current timeline by the end of season 1.

Overall, the season is roughly 8hrs of glorious story telling of the short stories in the first book "The Last Wish" and young Cirilla escaping the pursuit of the Nilfgaardian Empire. While it does have some questionable inclusions of characters at particular timelines that don't exist in the book, I can see why the inclusions are necessary to progress character development and time.

I will outline a few key characters and my top moments/ability of their acting.

Henry Cavil as Geralt: Nailed the voice interpretation from the source material and heavily influenced from the game, with Henry having played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt himself, you can clearly tell he's spent many hours perfecting the "Geralt voice" and it is down right great. Honourable mentions are his powerful moments with Jaskier (Dandelion from the English books) and Roach interactions are perfect.

Anya Chalotra as Yennifer: Amazing acting, emotional scenes when we are first introduced to her, she is literally crying snot which is amazing ability as an actor to show such RAW emotion... and following her character arc, by the end, she is totally different to the disfigured girl we see in the beginning... she is Chaos. (not a spoiler unless you've seen the show already or read the books).

Freya Allan as Cirilla: WOW! I've never cared about a fiction character as much as Freya Allan portrayed Ciri... The fragile but unknowingly most power character is acted perfectly as Freya takes us on an emotional adventure and discovering he unknown powers and the "Find Geralt of Rivia" Main quest she's on.

Because the 3 actors I've mentioned are considered the "main character" I will keep the list to them.

Other mentionable things: CGI and Practical effects. Both are used... I'm happy to see that Practical was favoured most of the time which adds that slight realism, a few CG shots were noticeable but it's not a huge turn off. Nilfgaardian armour is disgusting and not what anyone envisioned but that's where the complaints end.

Summary: If you're a Witcher fan, you'll love it... If you've never watched, read, played or been interested in any of the Witcher franchise then you might not find it that enjoyable. Everyone compares it to Game of Thrones, and it's not the most fair comparison, The Witcher franchise is very well written and The Witcher games have taken, after the books are written, even further with "The Wild Hunt". So, it's got the feel of GoT, the Gore of GoT, the Erotic scenes of GoT, but I do not consider The Witcher to be compared to GoT... it is on it's own and should be held far above other shows that have tried and failed the type of adaptation this is.

I was quite sure the show will be mediocre at best, but was blown away by watching the series. The atmosphere is just exactly The Witcher. Fighting scenes are perfect. Story jumps a bit back and forth, thus introducing some chaos into the narrative, some actors don't really fit their roles, but still, my overall impression - very cool. As it was evident that Netflix is really putting effort into this and Sapkowski himself was part of the team so I had quite the high hopes. But still it was able to positively surprise me. Even more so now that I have watched the whole season 1 twice.

The series follows books pretty closely. There are a lot of added info on Yennefers back story during the early episodes which I found to be very good to flesh her out as a character. In the end she is one of the 3 main characters in the books and in them she kind of just comes out of nowhere and her backstory is only mentioned as a side note. I think that was something her character actually lacked in the books considering how important one she is. Anya Chalotra also does fantastic job as her. I found her performance excellent especially in the later episodes.

After that additional story part the series follows the books very closely. Some things do seem to be left a bit vague compared to books which I would attribute to the limitations of the medium compared to books. So many things have to be left unsaid to fit a book into a video format. The most important themes are there though and it is made clear that it is not just the story of Geralt, but his family; himself, Yennefer and Ciri. That might be why some people who only have played the games have seem so critical of the series. In the books and as a result in the series Geralt is A point of view character, not THE point of view character. That is totally the opposite in games so the storytelling is very different.

I was wondering before the show came out how are they going to implement the short stories from the books and be able to tell a coherent story. They do have to do a lot of timejumping which might be hard to follow sometimes for people not familiar with the books. Especially since they added the early story of Ciri already to the series 1. I am happy to say though that they do manage to do it pretty well. They have a lot of little overlapping scenes to show what part of the timeframe it is and which scene is related to what and it is often easy to see things happen in the past because certain people are still alive. And it all comes together pretty nicely in the end and everyone end in the same moment so it is easy for them to start series 2 and the Ciri epic for good. The timing will be much easier in the following seasons.

All in all I was very happy with how the series turned out. The team does show clear care and respect towards the original stories of mr. Sapkowski and they did a very worthy adaptation.

P.S. Some people seem to have issues with the races of some of the cast. There are black people in the world of the Witcher from the beginning, namely the Zerrikanians. Zerrikanians who are right next to the Empire of Nilfgaard and whose mercenaries Nilfgaard is known to use en masse. So how there would not be any black or mixed race people in the Empire? That would just not make any sense. The Zerrikanian units are in the Nilfgaard deck in gwent for god sake.

EDIT: Bumped up my user score to 10 because all of the crybabies giving it a 0 because they watched one episode and there was a black man in it. Such a horror! My honest score would be an 8.

Like everything made by humans, there are areas that could by improved, but on the whole the show is a faithful and respectful adaptation of a beloved source material. And above all, it manages to capture what makes Sapcowski's work so special. To be honest, I haven't read any of the books, but I instantly recognized the moral ambiguity, philosophical questioning, and lovable characters that made me fall in love with the games. And if that isn't testament to how this show captures the essence the Witcher, then I don't know what is. The show is very clearly pushing some kind of diversity agenda, but that never gets in the way of the story and we should all be ashamed for doubting Anya Charlotra as our beloved Yennefer; I can hardly imagine her any other way now. There are times when I sensed that the creative teams politics undercut the narrative integrity of the story and characters, but I don't think it was ever a conscious decision, just something that manifested subconsciously. It was so subtle, in fact, that the only reason I think I noticed it was because I went looking for it.

And the show is smart. Oh, I'm sorry, you think it's an unfocused, confusing mess? Sorry, babe, you're just **** stupid. The story is told so well and is one of the main things that makes this show stand out. And for the love of Roach, can we please stop comparing this to Game of Thrones? They are nothing alike, both in terms of their source material and their execution.

There's so much I'd like to say so I think I'll just close with this: people are dumb. This show is good, really, **** good. I binged the first five episodes in one sitting and I finished the rest by the end of the day. I never do that; I cannot remember the last time something held my attention so completely like that.

Please, please give this show an honest try. Ignore the shallow hot-takes of the mainstream "critics" and give the show the benefit of the doubt. Some people don't like the nudity, others don't like the racial diversity in an eastern, medieval European setting. But please, put all that aside and you have my word you will not be disappointed. The fans have already spoken; if you already love the Witcher, you'll love this show; it has Sapcowski's blessing, after all.

I have read Sapkowski's novels when I was teenager. It was one of the first fantasy with not black and white characters. I love LOTRO but the great heroes and devilish vilians makes the story so far away from our times and circumstances.
The Witcher stories were full of gray characters, so of the ugly on outside or inside. To paraphrase Geralt "People are often the true monsters".

I have seen Polish series over 10 years ago I played the games from DC Project.
Recently a waited for Netflix series. And finally it is here :)
Except for Witcher 3: Wild Gone game it's the best that was created so far. Actors play amazingly. Special effects are gone really nice. World is painted slowly from one episode to another.
If I am to point a things to improve for sure they need to focus more on plot and improve sex scenes ;) Both were better in the Withcer 3 game ;)

Things can be a little confusing if you haven't played the games, but I was pleasantly surprised after enduring the first episode (which was pretty lame). It does a good job of invoking the feel of the game on a limited budget.
Its no Game of Thrones, but it is a cut above many fantasy book/game translations.
    Worth a watch.

The Witcher season 1 was an interesting ride if you ask me. Of course, some parts would leave you wondering. You can't understand some parts of the series. You literally can't understand most of the plot going on unless you had prior knowledge of the continent. Most would say to read the books, but maybe season 2 would clear things up, who knows?

And for all those who are comparing it the Game of Thrones, just stop. Just because you love Game of Thrones it doesn't mean that you have to hate The Witcher. I was not that dragged into Game of Thrones after watching it's first few episodes.

Some also commented on how terrible it is when compared to the book. I never read any of the books but this series seems quite nice to me. Maybe when you compare this to the books, this might seem as absolute garbage.

Without having played the games and without having read the books, I can honestly say that The Witcher was pretty interesting from the start.

The main characters, Cavil's Geralt, and Anya Chalotra's Yennefer are very well played, a joy to watch, and have really good chemistry. With Yennefer, it's great to see a badass female character in the truest sense.
The dark fantasy world with Eastern European tinges takes a bit of an acquired taste. For me, the way magic works here makes a bit more sense than in other series.
All in all, it's a good choice if you are looking for something a bit different. I very much hope that the creators will resolve the pacing issues. I would give it a 6 with an heavy emphasis on that I would definitely like to see a second season - which can be translated to a 7.

I understand it can be confusing at times for audience new to witcher genre. I remember when i was reading books at first you start with stories and then saga begins which is much better. An interesting start that many criticise because they did not pay attention.

The short stories are interesting, the back stories of each character help to establish them in the world and the 3 leads are strong.

Actors playing Geralt, Jaskier and Yennefer are perfect. Impressive fights. Good humor.
Writers made the choice to introduce three main characters in the first season. The problem is there are big age differences between them so their story arcs cannot happen at the same point of time. If You pay attention, You will understand this easily enough.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is an excellent adaptation of the books. Not outstanding, but excellent. Geralt is portrayed masterfully by Cavil. His mannerisms and motives are spot on. Yennifer is as cunning as ever and her expanded character creation was a very good add. Jaskier is just like I recall from the books. Ciri seemed truly scared and afraid of Cahir while she was on the run. I am interested to see how they portray a more confident bandit Ciri in the coming seasons after her training. The acting all around were superb. Netflix has even raised the countenance on dopplers. They seem to have much more meaningful or scariness to them then in the books. The locations and settings were diverse and believable. Artuza is just as I pictured from the books. I also saw no plastic water bottles on screen:) Expand

Loved the cast, Cavill is perfect as geralt. Yennefer and Ciri too, the true standout was the Lion of Cintra, amazing job.

Its relatively close to the books, and I think it does them justice, no tv show gets made without changes.

I can see the complaints from non-book readers,I can understand why they might find it hard to follow.

But as a book reader i thought it utterly brilliant.

It takes a while for viewers to learn how these characters are connected, via an exasperating Westworld-esque narrative knot that takes much of the season to unfurl. ... The Witcher heightens our confusion by fumbling details that would have helped it set a cohesive tone. Dialogue vacillates, from line to line, between theatrical fantasy-speak and modern colloquialisms (“Dragons are, in fact, a thing!”).
