There are very strict rules around the one source of magic like all good series have. This director / writer threw the works or Robert Jordan in the trash. I honestly think he didn’t even read the books. He got rid of a beloved character and changed the ages of the kids. They grow up on this journey in the books and learn about the world at a young age yet the writer though they should start the journey having killed their wives having sex with each other and more. This is a disgrace to the wheel of time books and I hope it doesn’t get renewed. Apart from the diversion from the bestselling book series which is always a mistake, the characters are bland and don’t feel like people you would want to be around. The director / writer failed in giving us ways to connect with rand and the rest right out of the gate. They’re adults in this series yet so many of the journeys they encounter happen because in the books they were kids. This is a terrible start to a long journey. If you’re going on a 14 book 1,000 page per book journey and deviate from it by 5-10degrees then you will end up in a totally different place because of the length of this journey. I can’t imagine where this bad show will end up but it certainly won’t be in line with the books. Does this writer / director think they’re better writers than Jordan? I guess so but they will likely find out the same thing that the Game of Throne writers found when they had no book to guide them (RR Martins fault in my opinion) the show will fall apart and everyone will be pissed. This happened at the start of this new show so let me go ahead and predict they won’t get through 3 seasons before getting cancelled. Side note, animation is bad, creatures look dumb, and the story they’re making doesn’t and (after some time certainly won’t; referring to later books) make sense. Well done ruining the show I was looking forward to most. This sucks. Expand

I only read the first book in the Wheel of Time series. I quit because of the generic 'good vs. bad' story and the annoying characters. However I am always interested in book to television adaptations. Even though I only read the first book II only read the first book in the Wheel of Time series. I quit because of the generic 'good vs. bad' story and the annoying characters. However I am always interested in book to television adaptations. Even though I only read the first book I can already say they changed the story in however way they wanted to make it politically correct. The amount of race swapping and feminism is so strong in this one it physically hurts. This combined with other random changes that don't make sense shows the writers don't have any respect for the world Robert Jordan created and I fear the worst for the series in the coming episodes/seasons.

You can feel this series is doing everything to be the next Game of Thrones but fails in every aspect of it: pacing, acting, dialogue and storytelling. The acting is comparable with the Twilight series, but that is what you get when you solely choose actors bases on their skin colour and not actual talent. The characters lack personality and bonding between them. It is just not believable. In that aspect they did a good job translating characters from the book to the screen; they are just as annoying and unconvincing.

The good parts? Probably the cinematography and some visual effects. You can see a lot of money went into this one. Unfortunate that money doesn't buy talent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You only need watch the massive plothole at the end of episode 2 to see how terrible the writing of this show is. Where did the 300 Trollocs go? In the BOOK they chased them into Shadar Logoth and were all killed by Mashadar, but in Rafe's Junkins quest to rub his scent all over Jordan's writings that is omitted, like every other page of the book he set out to adapt. Casual viewers haven't even been explained that a wisdom is a local healer, I wouldn't be surprised to learn people think she is a shaman that rain dances.
The actors are talented, but they have been given nothing, in a quest to race to the finish all characterization has been abandoned. The culture of the world, the name of their home town, the family dynamics... All of these have been sidelined to allow more time for genz fashion, whether it be 10 earings in invented character Layla's ears, or soundcloud rapper Arams little dredds. This is Wheel of Time in name alone. There may be a Rand, Perrin, and Mat, but little to nothing of them have survived this adaptation. 3 Episodes in and Perrin hasn't even gotten his signature axe yet. Mat is a graverobbing thief. Rand doesn't even have the flame and the void. Extending to the rest of the cast they aren't any more recognizable. I've been a fan of the books for nearly 2 decades and remember the pain of learning Jordan had died, this adaptation is an assault on his life's work. Skip it and read the books instead.

The TV show has some pacing issues, especially in the 1st episode but 2nd and 3rd episodes pick up and it flows better. Acting is on point, soundtrack is great (the main theme!) and I like the lighting and coloring of the sets — it's nice to see a fantasy that isn't washed out as so many others. I also like that many special effects are practical, however, some CGI could be better. The TV show definitely has a potential to be great. Expand

Although I understand that some changes must be made when adapting books for the screen, I am horrified to see that this adaption blatantly disregards the basic tenets of how both the world and some of the individual characters function in the books. I'm curious as to how the tv-series is supposed to progress, with making changes of this kind. Furthermore, the dialogue seems forced and unnatural, as the characters are forced to try including obvious information connected to world building, into pretty much every situation and casual conversation. The tv-series has huge pacing issues - it formerly runs from one scene to another. Combined with the above, this leaves both minor and lager plotholes. I'm so, so very sorry that this adaption was made. I wish I could unsee it. Expand

It's no small effort to reproduce epic fantasy on the screen. This is a fantastic production. Save some difficult but understandable pacing issues, there wasn't much I took issue with. Characters could have been deeper, but there was enough for me to warm up to them and want to keep watching. Plot feels a bit worn, but it's an older adaptation so it's not that surprising. Anyway, I highly recommend to any fan of fantasy. Not a fan of fantasy? This might not be got you. Expand

The visuals are stunning, the actors embody their characters deeply and convey emotions and inner feelings long thought "unadaptable", and the world feels real and vibrant. Every change from the books feels considered, and doesn't make the cut unless it makes sense for the world and improves the story in this new medium. Frankly, I expected to have more to complain about. What criticisms I do have are that for new viewers, the first episode can feel like a lot of set-up (not sure how many can still remember the first few episodes of season 1 of Game of Thrones before it became a global hit, but the exposition is on that level). In that first episode, there's plenty of action and exposition but not a whole lot of character. Don't let that fool you, though; the next two episodes use that setup incredibly well and spring straight into a rollicking story and deep character development. For readers of the books, the first episode can feel very fast paced (we're used to all this happening over a longer time period), but from the people I've asked who are non-book readers this doesn't seem to be an issue. Overall the showrunner, cast, and crew have shown that they can adapt this story faithfully and with the appropriate changes needed for the medium. Given how incredibly widely loved this book series is, the depths and breadth of the plot through 14 whole books, and the satisfying conclusion to the series itself, the fact that they've shown their ability to adapt it so well means we are in for an absolutely fantastic ride as the rest of this story is brought to life. I can't wait, and I'm so happy to be able to go on this journey with you all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am hoping for a better second season. It’s increasingly difficult to grab the reader in the first season of a big show like this, and I think this adaptation suffers from several issues that make loving it difficult. As a fan of the books I am annoyed with many of the choices, particularly at the character level. The first book in the series is not terribly good, but I would expect the TV show to elevate the writing through various changes, rather than making frankly mind boggling character choices. Additionally, the pacing is bizarre, speeding up and slowing down at strange moments and for mysterious reasons. Why? The lack of subtlety in the series is likely a good explanation. Audiences are morons of course and you can feel the writers sneering at you for your own stupidity. That’s fun. Still, quite a bit of potential of this has legs. Perhaps the writers will find their groove. I hope Amazon gives the show some breathing room. Who knows, maybe we will all be making fun of how “meh” the first season was while celebrating its fourth. One can hope. Expand

I read the books a few years ago and for me this is missing a lot of the charm of the books. Rosamund Pike is genuinely great but she's really the only actor with serious acting ability. The rest come across as a bit amateurish/wooden and three episodes in, the actor playing Rand is giving off strong George Lucus era Anakin Skywalker vibes. His acting is over dramatic and he feels like a bit of an over-serious yet whiney adolescent which is not how he is in the books. His relationship with Egwain is actually a bit
uncomfortable since neither of them are very convincing.

I'll keep on watching, but my hopes aren't super high at this point.

They've been reasonably faithful to the book, with the major changes that do exist (Rand+Egwene, Perrin's wife, Matt's parents) clearly serving to make the characters' arcs easier to put on screen without the benefit of their internal dialogue or piles of forced expository dialogue.

Casting is on point, with Egwene, Nynaeve, Moiraine, Lan, Thom, Tam, and Matt all being fantastic. Perrin and Rand both look the part, but have some room to grow in their performance (Perrin spends a lot of time with the same scrunched look on his face, Rand occasionally comes off as a petulant brat rather than a young man out of his depth and struggling to cope). Nobody is actively bad.

I'm very happy as a book fan, and the non-readers I've talked to so far also seem entertained. Very excited to see how this goes.

and there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth at his rebirth.
In sackcloth and ashes shall he clothe the people,

Like the unfettered dawn shall he blind us, and burn us,
yet shall the Dragon Reborn confront the Shadow at the Last Battle,

Is ending suffering a justification for destroying everything? Should females seek gender balance instead of dominance?)

I don't quite get some of the low reviews. The Wheel of Time is the opening of a spectacular adaptation of Robert Jordan's classics.

The character match is... breathtaking. Every actor has embraced their role so well you don't need to hear names to know who is who.

The storyline is different from the books, but not breakingly so. Yes, we're reading a different story, a different "turn of the wheel" if you will. But it still feels like the same magic that made the books international bestsellers.

As someone else put: it's worse than the books, and it's better than the books.

It is far to rushed to develop good characters. The books take there time and make sure all characters are well established before moving on. They also took creative liberties to change some of the fundamental relationships and how and when they took place. (if they ever took place in the books at all) Some of these changes are large enough to make you not even recognize the character. Often times I felt like I was watching a random fantasy TV show instead of watching the wheel of time. This is because it deviates so far from the Source material for no reason. There of course is a heavy handed undertone of feminism in this as well. Granted the books had some of that but not to this extent. All they had to do is follow the source material and slow down and we would have a great series on our hands. Instead we are left with and shadow of what could have been. I guess I should not have been surprised because Hollywood has been a let down for a while now. It is just to bad they had to take this franchise down the toilet with everything else. I gave it a two for cinematography Expand

And talking about these changes, I was a little bothered, but I thought it was necessary so that the series doesn't get too stuck or dragged.
