Agenda Over Story, The Death of 1,000 Adaptations

The red flags were there in nearly every episode, but now they've finally gone and done the one damn thing that the cultural marxists can't help but do in every f**king entertainment property under the moon: gone and queered up established straight characters. The long degenerate march through beloved properties continues. Burn in Hell, Rafe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A poor adaptation of a beloved series.

While the music and locations are generally OK, poor costume choices, casting and set design are all disappointing.

Visual effects are a mixed bag, although channeling is particularly poor.

Worst of all is that the show is not an adaptation of the books, but an unrecognisable interpretation, littered with inexplicable deletions as and additions, that leave it unworthy of the title is bares. Not only are the choices poor, they are also often poorly written, and directed. Even as standalone work, the show is bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is terrible. Acting is terrible, casting is terrible, writing is terrible. It has nothing to do with the books and Jordan’s vision. This showrunner shows no respect for the author, nor for the fans. Characters and story are so different from the original it is unrecognizable at times. The THREE ta'veren are almost absent from the story, even if they should be THE story. Rand is not even established as a character, Perrin is given a backstory that changes his personality completely. Mat, my favorite, is unrecognizable. They told us there was no time to tell the real story, but they found time and money to focus on useless characters like the sad warden. Thom is a completely different character, Lan gets butchered. Do not believe those who say it’s good, anyone who likes this crap is not a fan of the series. I expect a female Dragon Reborn. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Needless deviations from core plot points. The set pieces are nice and it is interesting to see a beloved world brought to life but thats where the positive comments end. The show runner seems to be hellbent at stripping out any charm this show could have had and is instead focused on infusing it with “the right message”. Expand

Acting, casting, costumes, music, sets, cinematography, dialog, story, pacing, etc.. you name it and it is just bad. Take a look at season one Game of Thrones for examples of how to do a show correctly where every aspect is amazing. This is what happens when you give a show to the creatively bankrupt. Stay away. I started reading the series in 1995 or 1996. Throughout the late 90's and 2000s I'd regularly re-read the whole series as a new book was about to be released. So I must have read the first 9 books at least 4 times each. After 4 episodes of this show I do no like it at all. I get it, there's no way they could keep all the details and background of the books. But not only have they stripped out heaps of details, they've changed huge aspects of the books and made large sequential orders.

Plus feel free to accuse me of being regressive, but they've done out of their way to fulfil every necessary diversity quota. The problem with this is that in the book there were different races presented, but it was clear that nations were very homogenous in their appearance. This was actually important to Rand and the prophecy of the Dragon. They could have had their diversity eventually, but they were determined to show a diverse community in the Two Rivers (a place locked away in isolation for 1000 years....)

There is so much gone that this really just comes across as a work of young adult fiction. If you've read the books you won't enjoy this.
Even if you have it's just a soft tv show.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The wheel wasn't broke so, why'd you try to fix it?
Not a faithful adaptation but rather a small, sad collection of points in the lore are used to fashion a thinly veiled political statement in the form of a high budget fantasy TV show. That $10 million an episode should leave viewers scratching their heads because it certainly isn't reflected in the show's production quality which hovers between community theatre and Xena: Warrior Princess.
The Trollocs look good but, it seems the makeup and effects budget was not spread far past them as the Ogier look like Rubber-Forehead-aliens and the One Power, when it is used, looks like a bunch of frothy milk being stirred up rather than threads, threads that should have unique visuals of some kind to indicate the different types of weaves and make channeling look at least somewhat interesting.
The actors are barely hitting par on these performances, which often seem lifted straight from a CW tween drama, and even worse, of the Emond's field five only the two women get any training, the boys are there but they are taught nothing and are either portrayed as cowardly or useless.
My only hope is that this will make more people want to read the books, whihc, unlike this show, are worth a look.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is CW or Shannara level bad. There are so many unnecessary changes it’s hard to watch. They try too hard to add a grim dark edge when WOT is high fantasy. I mean Perrin killing the wife he never had? Matt apparently mustering a family? Rand and Egwene having sex? I could go on but this show is laughably bad.

Edit: had to drop my rating from a 2 to a zero. It keeps getting worse with each episode. I have to pause every few minutes to explain to my wife what is going on, though I can barely follow it myself.

As an avid fan of the books who yearned to see them put on screen someday, I could go through and parse out the changes, mostly bad, from the books, but I'm not even going to honor it with that. Here's my warning to you, my fellow wayfaring friend:

If you're a fan of Wheel of Time, of fantasy, of art, of life in general do yourself a favor and pass on this boring, bland, factory made drivel that looks like it came off an Amazon Assembly line. The closest I ever came to being engaged was when considering the sheer amount of effort necessary to turn Jordan's sprawling, imaginative, mystical, thrilling world into a cheap vanilla imitation of an even cheaper small-town Renaissance fair. Officially my rating is 0, but really , it's -100/10. Balefire the damn thing.

Ok, so the story is basically just a hint of cliches, the characters are exclusively annoyed, dialog is trite if even coherent, and the plot is driven by enemies showing up out of nowhere and chasing everyone to the next location.
This might work as a carnival ride, but I have played pinball tables with more immersive storytelling. Then again, those were created by people who cared and not just content for content's sake.
Kudos to everyone who got paid for this slob. Good for you! Next time, go for cute, then you might get a decent children's show. Or keep all the grim and violent, but make it funny, so there is motivation for it. Or, since you obviously don't shy away from being tedious, turn it into a graphic novel and focus on being scenic, then you could even have the stupid songs without being offensive.
I get that these shows are made as fodder for subscribers to the platform. But really, at least have some self-respect and get the craft part right. This is embarrassing.

Good balance of story telling, character development, practical and special effects. Sets and locations are spectacular. I have been a big fan of the books for a long time and though I have had to adjust to some of the changes, I am okay with most and actually really love some! My wife has never read the books and she likes it as much or more than I do. The best part is that they don’t have to interject disgusting, over-the-top nudity and violence just to keep people entertained or shocked like many of the other similar show (Witcher or GoT). The game of "oh, I remember that" and "what, how dare they change THAT" is very entertaining. The society depicted is almost certainly more multi-hued, multi-cultural, and socially diverse than what Jordan wrote, but this is 2021, not 1990, and not everyone is a white male heterosexual anymore.

I will certainly keep watching, waiting to see some of my favorite characters walk on stage in due course.

If you're into fantasy, this is the show for you. Book 1 is heavily LoTR inspired and you'll see that in the first season. The show branches out fairly quickly and is faithful to the general plot/structure of the books. That said, it *is* an adaption, but imo, a good one. The show reaches its tone/footing in episode 4 and only gets better episode after episode. As a book reader/fan of 30 years, adaption wise it looks to be done as well as LoTR and the Harry Potter (3+) movies were done. I want so badly to like this, but I just can't support the series --and I have to blame the director Rafe. The arrogance this man showed changing SO MUCH from the text is basically unforgivable.

I look at this series as nothing but a disrespectful smearing of the work left to us by Robert Jordan. From the casting of Alanna and Egwene to that epsiode 1 sex scene with Rand, to the sword slaying, AoE healing blast master Nynaeve, to Matt's family becoming white trash, to Perrin's 'WIFE' ...I hate this series. This is not Wheel of Time. This is like the Dark One's taint reaching out through the script to corrupt a story so many of us love.

I've seen the first 3 episodes so far and I LOVED it. The world is beautiful, the characters are well realised from the books so far, the action is intense and the acting is on point!

I do have a couple issues though. First off is the pacing. It's pretty uneven so far. Sometimes it feels a bit slow and then other times it feels like everything is being rushed, leaving some memorable moments from the book out of the show. That's mainly an issue for episode 1 though. The pacing in episodes 2 and 3 is much better, but not quite there yet.

My other issue is the CGI. Sometimes it looks good and the practicle effects look great. However, there are a couple moments, specifically when it comes to the trollocs that looks a little cheap and wonky. Not awful but not particularly good. And the CGI should be GREAT with this kind of budget.

Overall, I am very pleased with this adaptation so far! It has room to improve and I hope it gets a chance to beyond season 2. Can't wait to watch more!

As a WoT reader since 2001, I am a huge fan of this series and of the work of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.

Given the challenges this book series was bound to face if/when it was adapted to screen, I think this adaptation is doing quite well. There have certainly been changes--some I don't entirely agree with--but thus far none have been what I would consider deal-breaking changes. The changes I don't agree with, I do understand their point of view.

The acting has been excellent so far. The production value and the care put into visually creating Robert Jordan's world are clearly apparent. I've been especially impressed by the costuming and the soundtrack so far.

Can't wait to see more of this series. Us readers have been waiting a very long time to see this story on-screen, and so far, I'm generally very happy with what I've seen.

Plenty money was spent, and the acting is perfectly fine. For any Brandon Sanderson fans out there; shows like this getting mediocre support is why nothing Brandon Sanderson has been made. Fans are cutting off their nose to spite their face. I know some people have strong opinions regarding the theatrical vs the books. BUT fans of high fantasy are not going to get mroe of this unless there is a supportive amrket for high fantasy. I read the book and thought they are better than average. Only 3 and 4 episodes released at time of my revie and WoT is sitting at 6.2. Makes me feel like this lack of strong fan support is part of the reason Brandon Sander (my personal fav for the genre) but also othgers are not going to have their work adapted. I give it a ten because Amazon took a chance with this series and I am glad they did. I would have have this than not having made it at all. Its not cheesy, its plenty dark, good acting, fine dialouge. Definitley worth a watch Expand

There are some moments of magic and marauding creatures, but what’s lacking is any originality in the approach or style. Some of the locations are impressive, but much of the design is uninspired and some of the CGI is downright shoddy. Fans of the swords and sorcery genre may have the patience, but after watching the first 3 episodes, it still doesn’t have any narrative or visual magic to make it compelling. (5 more episodes are coming every week and a 2nd season has already been approved) Expand

That said, Ive read enough to get a solid grasp of the characters and factions of the world. It was due to this that I first became surprised by the huge changes implemented in the show with characters being handled totally differently both in action and appearance.

This is irrelevant in the grand order of things as the show doesn’t need to follow the books to be a successful and fun show; unfortunately, it simply isn’t. There are many issues here, from modern-looking clothing on poor medieval villagers to a terrible script which completely fails to grasp the attention or instil any emotion. Some may say this is due to the cast themselves, but the cast themselves are more than adequate for this sort of show but they’re simply not given anything beyond amateur dramatics to do. Additionally, watching it as a stand-alone show without considering the books, it all feels horrendously rushed with the characters positively flying from one Dr Who style threat to another, all in a single episode and not lingering anywhere long enough to simply get to know them or explain what all this madness around them is! And my mention of Dr Who is not a passing one as, for a show with an alleged $10,000,000 an episode budget, the effects are often barely on par with the aforementioned BBC TV show. This is both down to the SFX themselves but also some really shoddy camera work and production that lack any artistic flair. We’re now 4 episodes down and I am going to TRY and soldier on through them all, just to be able to say I gave this hot mess an adequate chance but I doubt I’ll return for Season 2 as this is not a replacement for Dr Who, let along Game of Thrones and lacks any passion or excitement.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Most of the characters are casted very well. That is not why this gets a zero. Nor the beautiful cinematography which while visually beautiful seems to fail the description that is the Two Rivers.

It is the story it is so far off the mark you would need a gps and a navigator to find it. Some of the simple things that Moiraine does have far reaching consequences for characters that aren't even part of the main cast. One of the worst marks against the show is the simple change of "The Dragon can be male or female" don't get me wrong that sure you want to include women within the possibly. But that statement alone brings with it a truck load of problems for the story that is The Wheel of Time. Some context for people who wanted to read this but may have not read books. The One Power is split in 2 (well there is a 2nd source of power but not important to this moment). 'Saidar' is the female half of the One Power only a woman can touch or use it. The other half is Saidin which only the men can touch the reason Saidin is dangerous is due to the Dark One tainting it. Which doing the Prologue for the Eye of the World would have been great as its a great scene that brings with it tons of questions for viewers, which touches on this. More questions for viewers a deeper want to answer them by watching more. Now the problem with the prophecy is the Dragon is always Male and because the Dark One tainted the male half the Dragon would go insane before ever getting to the last battle. This was the problem besides the "Red Ajah" potentially killing him without knowing it. Now if you change the Prophecy to can be "either" even though Moraine knew a Baby Boy was born on Dragonmount and taken away. Hence why she is so annoyed in the First Book no towns hold good records of who was born from where etc. This is why she brought the 3 boys because she didn't know who was the Dragon but the Dark One was aiming there. The Whole Ta'veren thing comes later. But the two women were brought Ewegene due to her impressive power that would make her a powerful Aei Sedai. Nynaeve because she wanted to bring back her villagers. But stays to protect them and pretty much never comes back.

And one of my biggest complaints is Thom why isn't he in Emond's Field? Thom falls in love with Moiraine. AND THAT STARTS HERE WHEN HE COMES WITH THE BOYS RUNNING FROM THE TROLLOCS!!! By far my favorite character and he got a couple spots in a bar and saves Mat. Which while a good touch destroys his character development of falling in love with Moiraine Sedai which is the reason later in the books he tries so hard to save her from the Tower Ghenjei. And becomes her Warder! (Insert angry sounds here)

Also just a few characters that I feel missed on.

Elyas & Vin both missing, both huge points of change within Moiraine's understanding of what is going on, and for Perrin. Ewgene's Father the Innkeeper should of been fat. Because you "Never trust a skinny Innkeeper". Also no Draghkar come on. And don't get me started on Perrin's whole character arc you have butched one of the Three in a way that ruins the show beyond repair.

If you have read this far congratulations. You either find my ranting truly silly or see the pain of a lifetime fan watching his beloved series get butchered worse then the Dragon Ball Live Action movie. I highly recommend reading the books and ignoring this series. No amount of love could fix the holes they have dug in this beautiful epic.

The magic at the core of events has been altered, and for most of these things for no good reason. The Wheel of Time is an epic/fantasy based on the novels written by Robert Jordan in the 1980s.

The cinematography, editing, costumes, makeup, scenography, stage design, set design and other technical aspects of the series are superb.

But then...
Half of the casting is good. Half of the casting is bad. Half of the acting is good. Half of the acting is bad. Some of the writing is good. Some of the writing is bad.

I'm going to make a wild guess. The series is rated 16+ (young adults). I'm thinking at some point... somehow there was a decision to make a series for teenagers and the project went downhill at that point. Why so much money and talent would be wasted on such excellent technical work to be used on a B-grade project is odd - in my opinion. I think the project was inappropriately budgeted.

Also, again... why there are so many obviously bad casting decisions and bad acting betwixt so many good casting decisions and good acting is bizarre. Something must have gone very haywire within the development. I've seen this in other films in the last couple of years and there seems to be some strange idea that it doesn't matter if half the casting and half the acting is bad. Is it an idea that the good acting will make up for it somehow? Rosamund Mary Ellen Pike (who plays the Moiraine Damodred character) is an actor of the highest quality - and, sure... I certainly understand that it is not possible to cast the entire series with actors of her caliber - but, there is no excuse for casting other characters with such bad non-talent.

In my mind I imagine something like this...
OK.. Scene 29B, take 1... action!.....
Cut.. that's a wrap, good enough for teenagers. We just spent over a $1,000,000 on a 10 minute scene with 11 good actors and 14 really, really bad actors. Teenagers will never notice the bad acting! We certainly aren't going to spend another $100,000 on a second take.

I'm rating this series a 6 - but, understand that is an average of grade-3 acting to grade-9 acting... averaged with grade 7 to grade 10 technicals. A few badly cast, bad actors can destroy what would have been a pretty good series.

Obviously, the issue of how closely a script follows the source material is irrelevant. I'm not sure why so many individuals think that is important.
Books and films are completely different mediums. Making a film that closely follows source material from a book would be an interesting academic exercise - but, not something that is in and of itself necessarily worthwhile. Regardless, as for the writing, obviously the fantasy genre must be something you enjoy or one would assume you would not watch this series. Nevertheless, there are issues with the writing that I'm going to ignore until I've had more time to watch the series.

They have refactored the story considerably and IMO not for the better. They changed the focus of the story apparently to meet their goals of political correctness and their newly invented plot points. The result is that quality storytelling has taken 3rd or 4th seat. The clumsy storytelling is evident in the videography as well. The compelling visual storytelling that was so striking in GoT is completely missing here. The fabric of this story should be composed of the relationships of the characters and their development. The result is a lack of deep engagement by the viewer. The end result is a watchable but forgettable TV show. I have only watched thru episode 3 so perhaps it will get better but it show no signs of doing so. For those of us who read the books, this is a missed opportunity to tell a great story. Expand

Absolutely shocking adaptation for the first 3 episodes. I'll try not to put any spoilers.

I understand the novels have to be cut down to fit to a television template, but this is just ridiculous. Rosamund Pike is the only good thing about WoT so far. The showrunner has reduced most of the main characters to fill in material, making them seem like whiney asses and pushed their development put of sight.
I'm all for diversity and strong female characters, but in a series of books that has them by the bucketload, Judkins has simply dropped the ball big time. Cutting key scenes and saying it's for better exposition, then adding scenes that are not only nowhere to be found in the books, but don't even add to the story in any way is just frustrating and had me shaking my head.

I'll continue to see where this goes, but I don't hold much hope.

Honestly the first 3 episodes felt like hate mail toward Robert Jordan and the fans.

The show's creators excuse that the plot must be compressed to fit the adaptation and for it some storylines and characters needed to be dropped for the pacing and the overall story arc, is laughable a flat out lie, since they've introduced completely new characters and stories that has nothing to do with The Wheel Of Time which take almost 2/3 of the screen time.

In an adaptation of such a great work that is The Wheel Of Time, with it's amazing descriptions, characters and story, to get the basic core world mechanisms, theology, details and characterizations so painfully wrong is simply inexcusable. And to think that this is just the beginning of the journey, this will be a really rotten one for the fans of the books or for fans in general who like a good story.

If they really wanted to tell their story that much, and not the one in the books, they only needed to drop the name The Wheel Of Time and call it Amazon's & Rafe's Generic Fan Fiction or something, and unfortunately it still won't be passable TV show.

The editing is abysmal, diversifying the cast could've work, but it only bogs them down because they've picked the wrong actors, whose acting is so stiff and really bad, the writers are just trying to force the newest and wokest thing of the moment (which will be unacceptable next year when the next woke thing comes along), pacing is all over the place which makes this show completely disjointed and dismal failure.

The only question about this remains: is this show gonna last 2 or 3 seasons?

Hopefully Amazon will learn from this debacle and will not make the same mistakes with it's upcoming adaptation of LoTR.

Let me start out by saying I’ve never read the book series this show is based on. Having watching the first three episodes I don’t much care for the show, or the world the show has created. It’s an extremely generic and cliche High Fantasy world. Much of the dialogue feels needlessly lofty with lines like “the old blood runs deep in those mountains.” Some of the sets and CIG have almost a low budget B movie feel which is odd since this show is reported to have cost a fortune per episode. There is also something off about the visual feel of the show. It’s almost like Amazon made the colors more vivid during post production. Also can we do something about the costumes. Rand’s costume in particular looks like something out the NYC Fashion week’s Fall Farm-boy styles. These kids look like hipsters not fantasy heroes. Expand

If the tv follows the books then we're in for 2 seasons of mainly world building before things getting into gear. Expand

Very Cringey

The directing and acting is so cheesy, like a made for TV drama. And if you are a fan of the novels, be warned there are significant deviations from the book in just the first episode. Not surprisingly, little if any of the changes add to the story. Also, there’s an incredibly diverse group of people that lives in the tiny peasant village. It’s almost like they had to meet a quota for every ethnicity. It’s all so silly.

Despite my reservations, I was excited for the show. Well, I should have known better. This is what happens when something gets adapted to go main stream for “modern audiences”.

I guess this is not too bad if you did not read the books.
But for me, the tv series has nothing in common with the books except the name. The books focus heavily on character development, the series does have a lot of action instead.

Absolutely not for me.

The show runners promised they would keep the heart of the book, THEY. DID. NOT!

Had to force my way through the first episode. The acting, music, plot, and especially the special effects are awful.

Obviously an adaptation would need to be trimmed and changes to be made. Meh it’s good enough. Think of it as another turn of the wheel.

Also the characters are done differently form the books. You can think of this as another turning of the wheel. It is the wheel of time in essence. The effects range from fine to great. The score is really good too. The characters are really well done. People are complaining it's not the same as the books but if it was that would not be fun, you might as well just read the books. In the end it's a fun show and it will only get better. I hope Expand

I don't know how many hours I've spent reading and re-reading these wonderful books. I convinced a group of friends, many of whom were curious about WoT but hadn't read it yet, to come to a watch party for the release.

This show really let me down. It failed to capture the essence of the books, wasted time with new nonsense and new, poorly-developed characters from the TV writers, at the expense of dropping most of the incredible scenes from the books.

The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter adaptations all made changes to suit the medium without losing the core of what made the original work great. In this, The Wheel of Time TV show failed miserably.

However, the characters and story are horribly, terribly butchered. I think if I can somehow get into the idea that this is an alternate universe, a different turning of the Wheel, a beginning that was not the beginning described in the book... maybe I can enjoy the show a bit. You need that sort of copium to endure this.

Newcomers will likely have an OK time if they can turn a blind eye to all the glaring plot-holes and inconsistencies that arise from randomly inserting your fanfic into a story as complex as this one.

I hope this at least brings more people into Robert Jordan's world so I can tell them to read the books, or listen to the audiobooks.

After watching them, I can say that I thouroughly enjoyed the experience. The first episode was rough, there were pacing issues, a few instinces of wooden dialouge, as well as some bad CGI. After the first episode things begin to improve, and by the third episode I was completely hooked. The casting for each character was excellent, the cinematography superb, and the dialouge much improved. Some book readers may be put off by some of the changes, like I was at first, but I trust that the show runners know what they're doing and have thought everything through. Overall: If you push on through the first episode then you'll be rewarded with a fun and interesting television experience. Expand

There are neither beginnings or endings to the turning of the Wheel, but this is A beginning. Book purists are gonna hate, but the vast majority of the changes are cosmetic at most, trust me you are in for a ride.
