And it's a shame, really, to see the critical misunderstanding most reviewers have had about the show. This is *not* a straight comedy show. It is, at its core, a spiritual successor to Star Trek, while at the same time poking fun at the series, as well as sci fi in general. Many critics seem to be complaining that the show was not consistently funny. This would be a fair complaint if the show had many jokes, most of which fell flat. However, the fact is that the show has a handfull of jokes sprinkled throughout the episode, most of which are chuckle-worthy throwaway lines, and character-building moments.

However, misunderstandings don't warrant a 9/10 on metacritic. What is actually worth watching about this show?

    The Characters:
Each character presented in this is fairly well defined and has remarkably interesting synergy with each other. The writing is snappy enough to be interesting while distinct between characters as to not seem as if it's grasping for quotable lines. While the writing is nowhere near on-par with the likes of Xavier, it helps carry the story along fairly nicely, and retains that genuine charm which Star Trek performed so distinctly and prominently in its formative years.

    The Production:
The show, simply put, looks like Star Trek. It is clear that the editors and effects artists put great thought into making it look authentically like a Star Trek show. Everything from the shots to the lighting evokes the classic style of Star Trek to a tee (though perhaps more DS9 than TNG). While by no means do visuals save or doom a show, the effort put into the aesthetics of the show demonstrate the care which went into it. This work is all in service of portraying a familiar, yet distinct and genuine science fiction world, with meshes of old and new imagery.

    The Plot:
Though little has been shown as to the overarching narrative, and whether or not the show is serialized, episodic, or a mix of the two, the pacing and content of the plot in this show is strangely compelling. You'd think from what is ostensibly a parody show that the writing plays the whole thing fairly loosey goosey, but in practice, the narrative actually has some stakes. The characters are likeable enough as to where you want to see them make it through to the end, and it is made clear from the offset that characters can and will die if something goes wrong. The only issue I found in the story was that the enemy alien race, The Krill (?), seemed a bit too grunt-y to be considered an actual threat. They're quickly dispatched by the main cast, which is by no means filled with combatants. However, given the glimpses we've seen of the future episodes, this is by no means the biggest threat planned for the cast.

Overall, I'd say the show is enjoyable so far. I may amend the score in future if the quality declines. However, in a time where we haven't seen anything really interesting come of Star Trek in decades, seeing something like this which tastefully and respectfully evokes the charm of the old show is, perplexingly, a breath of fresh air. Definitely give it a go for yourself.

This show is bright, optimistic and a real breath of fresh air in a genre that has gone dark, serious and gritty - whether we wanted it to or not. If it cuts back on the forced gags, let's the humour flow more naturally and concentrates on sci-fi, it could become a real gem. Good luck Seth. I applaud the vision and critics be damned.

This show did its intended job ... it was funny & entertaining. The cast, set, and story line were spot on. The "pro critics" should either get new jobs or stop reviewing shows of the genre. Generally speaking, pro critics know nothing about entertainment. Fire them all.

The show is trying to be a bit like Mash with a very healthy dose of Star Trek thrown in. It's a comedy which also deals with serious subjects from time to time. Most of the characters (especially the aliens) are interesting and I look forward to learning more about them and their backstories as the show progresses.

The show is also interesting because it's not showcasing the best and brightest humanity has to offer. The Orville is a mid level ship and the crew is not perfect, just doing the best they can with what they have.

I expect upon completion of the season, my rating will go up.

I think it's obvious that there's a disconnect between Critics and the target audience. It's why I have stopped even caring what they think.

I really enjoyed this first episode. It felt real, unlike how Star Trek comes across sometimes . I mean there are times during serious situations where you just have to make a joke to relieve the tension. This is exactly how this show felt.

Special effects were pretty good and the characters were believable and you could tell they had a good rapport. The alien designs are also very good. I love that blob in the hallway. And the Ogre? The actors already have great chemistry (especially the helmsman and navigator) and the dynamic Ed and his wife is hilarious and yet heartfelt at the end. I'm very pleased and look forward to the coming season.

I'd agree with those saying that Fox has pitched the programme wrong by making it out to be a Sitcom - it's not, it's a drama with some comedy (which isn't always very successful and fails to hit the mark) and it's certainly looking a lot more Star Trek-like than Discovery seems like it's going to be.

I'm hoping that we get more than the first batch of episodes and that it doesn't end up facing the cancellation bear so early, always the risk if viewers side with the critics and decide not to watch based on their opinions.

Finally, a series that captures some of the freshness of the original Star Trek. The critics are simply wrong on this one and while I usually agree with them I think they missed the point or do not know the Trek series going back 50 years.

Granted, as an old man I have lived out the series and I do not mean just by watching reruns. I recall the particular interest in this series in the 60's and how people felt about it. And while I did not comprehend it well as a 12 year old I did know and do remember that it generated a different feel than the last few Trek series.

Yes, that is subjective, but MacFarlane has captured that optimism and given it back with humor to an audience weary of dark vistas, explosions, and substituting Wild West stories for a plot in the last Trek films and TV shows. And, yes, I like Westerns.

In The Orville, however, the first six episodes alone the big questions present themselves as much to the viewer than anything in most of the recent Trek films.

The critics do not like MacFarlane's humor but this is a mistake. Using humor to show the light aspects as well as pointing out human flaws even through deliberate weak humor occasionally is welcome in a franchise run, apparently, by people who think that Trek fans are "really" just an action genre audience.

So my assessment is that this is as good right now as both TOS and The Next Generation. I'm even hoping that MacFarlane and his bullpen of writers will come up with an episode of a meeting with the 1920's surrealists, something you would never see in the last four Trek series.

So without being a part of the Trek franchise, The Orville out-Treks the recent installments both on the screen and on TV.

Thank God for Seth MacFarlane. I know he will appreciate the irony of that statement.

The simplest way to describe this show is as follows: It is like watching one of the episodic, 90s, Star Trek Shows, like Next Generation, while ramping down some of the seriousness and gravitas, while increasing the humor. The show does not take itself too seriously and yet at the same time still has interesting and thought provoking episodes in the same mold as Star Trek. The CGI/effects are pretty good for a TV, comedy knock off of the Star Trek franchise. This show is definitely worth the time to watch because it takes an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach to the Star Trek model of the 90s.

One final point. In the Trump era we find ourselves in, the massive disparity between the "professional critics" score and the average viewer review score is very telling. It once again demonstrates the disconnect between the out of touch people in the professional classes, the political class, and the media class, and the ordinary person. Do yourself a favor, ignore the critic reviews and jump straight to the real person reviews, then watch the show and enjoy.

This show, in my opinion, is by far the superior show, in terms of humour and quality of storylines as well as respect it pays to the format and universe of Star Trek (more than even anything JJ Abrams managed)

I just binge watched the first 4 episodes of The Orville... And, being a person with an internet connection, I naturally couldn't resist the temptation to make my opinions known.

For the uninitiated, The Orville is the latest Seth MacFarlane comedy. Immediately this may be a cause for concern, as his animation has become increasingly stale (although I was a fan of A Million Ways To Die In The West).

And yet, within the space of its trailer, my feelings went from curious to optimistic.

In the end, these initial episodes far exceeded my expectations, actually feeling less like a "typical" sitcom than the trailer suggests... Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of one-liners. But the structure of each episode much more closely resembles that of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine or even Voyager. This actually works incredibly well; as the world is built throughout each episode, the jokes feel funnier as you realise these are people making funny comments in a consistent world, rather than the changing rules of MacFarlane's previous animations. The plots feel like the kind you would find on any past Trek episode, with the humour instead coming from the character's reactions. You could imagine these characters in the actual Star Trek universe, being given a ship because there's no-one else to pilot it. I mean, I'm sure even in the Federation there must be alcoholism, divorce and tension between senior staff...

Of particular note to me was the third episode "About A Girl". Without giving too many spoilers, it surprised me how well it emulated the way Star Trek would present cultural problems... With my only issues being it was so early in the series there wasn't the chance of more character development which was maybe needed for the situation and characters to feel more relatable. Equally, I can see why an episode such as this was broadcast so early... As a signal that this was aiming to be more than a silly comedy, but to derive humour instead from how it follows (and plays with) the situations from Star Trek itself, I feel it was successful. One thing that did shock me was some discussion this episode was so-called "SJW" and pushing some kind of political message... From people who clearly know nothing about Star Trek or the kind of message that Gene Roddenberry tried to convey from his very first season.

The only small minus is due to it taking a couple of episodes in the beginning of the season before The Orville finally hit the right note balancing it's comedic aspects. Many critics, and negative reviews here are complaining the show doesn't know if it's a comedy or a drama. Does it have to fit in neatly into one genre? Another reviewer compared it to M*A*S*H, blending comedy and drama. I think it's a fair comparison (minus the laugh track).

he characters act or at least think more like real people around today than the culturally evolved Roddenberry Star Trek TNG characters. That seems to irk a lot of people, but who's to say human's are suppose to act that way in the future. Sure, they're a bit too quick with the humor to be realistic, but it's still comedic TV.

The plot of the pilot isn't super original, but the point of the pilot isn't the plot, but as an introduction to the show. It's arguably better than TNG's pilot episode.

Many feel the jokes fall flat, which is subjective. I don't enjoy Family Guy, but laughed at about half the jokes in this show. Others really loved it.

People who don't like the "dated" look of the show with it's non-gritty bright design aren't getting the Star Trek TNG roots of the show.

The first episode is a little slow going, and some of the characters seem to lack depth, but that is not important. This series is headed towards filling a universe.

The plot of the first episode is basically what everyone would expect from a first episode. A lot of exposition on who the characters are, they establish the relationships, they introduce the bad guys, etc. Understandably the first episode is a little slow and weirdly paces. We get to meet the bad guys (The Krill), and we get to meet many of the players.

If you are a Trek fan you'll feel like this belongs in your ST:TNG universe. The color pallet, the ship designs, the rooms, everything just feels like home. Just, maybe newer. It's apparent that this isn't some cheap knock off of the TNG universe, but it is a well crafted love song from someone who deeply cares for it.

This series may not be for everyone. The jokes are a little out of place for the series. The pacing was off, and the characters feel forced. However, if you watch Season 1 of TNG or pretty much any show you can say the same thing. The Orville will become a staple of everyones evening viewing as soon as they find their pace. I think that will happen before the end of season 1.

Even in a few episodes, that writing has generated some intriguing surprises, and the chemistry between the characters have grown. It works for much the same reasons a non-parodical Star Trek does: the writers, despite having to adhere to the tropes of the genre, are freer than the ones churning out regular network shows.

It has a ways to go to get up to the impactfulness of its predecessors, but it's been good enough so far that it ought to get the chance to go on a while.

Classic case of professional critics having no sense of humor and being way too serious. This show is a remarkably good, lighthearted poke at the whole of the Star Trek franchise. It does not in any way denigrate, but in fact, pays homage to the franchise while providing nice, escapism, off beat humor that is quite enjoyable. IGNORE THE CRITICS ON THIS ONE!!

The Orville is the Star Trek I've been wishing for for years. The heart of Trek is (or was!) optimism, a thoughtful exploration of human society, and *humor*. The Orville delivers at warp 11. I don't know what show those idiot critics were watching. If you want a show that makes you think and laugh at the same time, The Orville is for you.

I loved it. It was funny and family-friendly. It hearkened back to a more noble time in television. Television today needs to loosen up and get away from gritty realism. BSG and "New" Trek is fun, but it's time for something different. ... Happy Arbor Day!

I can see how all the hack critics are going to slam this show for it not being parody like Family Guy, but actually being a spiritual successor to Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, something we haven't seen in a very long time.

There is a feeling of optimism, hope and exuberance tempered with a touch of seriousness in the attitudes of the characters - not because of any cynical, edgy 'darkness' that has crept into Star Trek this millenium - but because they understand the gravity of their mission.

This show captured the true essence of Star Trek so well in fact that, if you remove the gags, it could easily have been an episode of Star Trek. But it wasn't and that is kind of a shame. The gags are very funny in places but fell flat at other times. It seemed as though McFarlane created a Star Trek homage and then shoe-horned in a few jokes. At times when watching I found myself hoping there wouldn't be another joke anytime soon. Not because they weren't funny, but because I didn't want my immersion broken. The story in this episode is simple but there is a spark of inspiration in how it unfolded that gives me hope for the series.

Most of the main characters were set up well and I found them all intriguing to varying degrees. Some have alot of potential and I feel it will make or break the show how well they are written and performed in the season ahead. MacFarlane's Captain and his ex-wife first officer aren't part of that list as I thought they came off a bit bland, though I was impressed with both the actors when they needed shift gear to a more dramatic tone. Rather, it's the supporting cast I speak of here.

For what the show is, it is done really well so I'm giving it a 9. The jokes didn't always land and at times jarred with the main plot but it made me laugh and felt like a quality parody that really embraced it's source material with a clear passion.

Think of this show as TNG if the show followed a crew of run-of-the-mill folks on an average ship instead of an exceptional crew on a top-of-the-line ship. The show deals with complicated issues in the same way that TNG used to but it lightens things up by letting the audience see that people are still people, no matter how advanced the society gets. All that being said, I feel like the best thing this show has going for it is that isn't bogged down with Star Trek's baggage. It gets to do all the fun stuff from Trek and the stuff the fans love, but it doesn't have to worry about violating decades of canon. Rather then being on a flagship, a vessel of hope for all of humanity, they are on a middle class ship. The ship is smaller, the people less important, but their lives and stories they have are way richer because of this.

This is a breath of fresh air, with odd humor and the touch of situational comedy, it presents a world where you can actually connect with. Just a bunch of people doing their jobs and having funny interactions, all while set in space.

I've been very disappointed in the direction Star Trek has been going over the years, opting for more space battles and special effects rather than thought-provoking dilemmas and focusing on the wonders of the cosmos.

The Orville seems to be filling in the dark hole that the absence of Star Trek has left in us. There is humor in the show, but it's not the main focus, and the show is dabbling in serious issues like the ethics of sex-change operations and cultural/racial elitism.

We can forgive the show for trying to find its footing and establish the right balance between comedy and drama. This is normal for a show that's just starting out. But there is a lot to love so far, and the show's heart is in the right place for a fantastic series. Fox please don't Firefly this one...

THIS IS NOT FAMILY GUY!. if you are hesitant to watch this because of what Seth MacFarlane normally puts out you have nothing to fear. The comedy here is geared toward adults but it's not gross, disturbing, or crude. At worst it dips into the first rung of PG-13, but so did Start Trek TNG. If your kids are stay-at-home adults or in their teens you might even be able to watch it as a family. Don't let the name "Seth MacFarlane" scare you away from this one. It is a really good show.
