This show surprised the crap out of me. I was going in expecting "Ted in space" but by was I wrong, and boy an I glad I was.
This show actually has a pretty delicate balance between seriousness and humour. I'll sink into the drama the suddenly a character will need to use the bathroom. Then It'll all come back to me that it's comedy too!

The Orville is totally a Star Trek clone with comedy that manages to tap into what made Star Trek good. That's literally all you need to know, oh and don't listen to any of the professional reviewers. They have no clue what they are talking about. (Duh what else is new). If you want more details see below but what is said above is literally all you really need to know.

    Pros:

-It's "real" Star Trek, unlike the modern Star Trek movies and the new Star Trek Discovery, The Orville actually understands its source material and i was amazed at how much depth there was in episode three, the complexity and issues tackled are deeper and more nuanced than anything portrayed by the nonstop action crap filled with lens flares and horizontal shoots we've seen during the last 10 years.

    -Great CGI

-Great Costumes (for the most part)

-The show examines political and cultural aspects of our modern day by shining a light on them in this alien soap opera just like Star Trek The Next Generation did.

-Good main cast with believable acting.

-Action is sparse and gives way to the intellectual examination of society and societal issues.

-The show is very self aware of the silliness and ridiculousness that sometimes goes on which makes for great additional commentary on the tropes and plot devices shows like this sometimes rely on.

    Cons:

-The Robot crew members costume is stupid and doesn't fit the show at all.

    - Some bad acting from a few of the secondary characters.

    - The jokes in the first three episodes (What I've watched so far) are a bit hit and miss, some were pretty funny and some were totally off for me.

Summary: I literally can't think of any more cons, though I'm sure there are some. I'm just so happy to finally have an intellectual star trek type show to watch again. Yes some of the jokes are not that funny, but it's a minor nuisance and is completely overshadowed by the feeling of pure joy as the show handles moral, societal and cultural questions with a intellectual approach. I don't want to spoil anything but episode three completely blew me away. It was so refreshing to actually have to think while watching, I had to stop and consider the points and the implications of the characters decisions and statements to examine where I stood on it all.

Just a fantastic show so far, surely there is room for improvement and I'm sure they will find their feet as time goes on but they clearly have a perfect grasp of what made Star Trek great to begin with and that is all that matters to me.

If you go by the first episode (which it appears the critics did) then yes the show doesn't seem that great but it grows into a great Star Trek show of its own within just 5 episodes (which is far faster than most of the real star trek series!).

The Krill (sort of reminiscent of the Jem'Hadar) are being made into a real threat to this version of the Federation. They are pretty much the underlying storyline throughout the season.

I like the 'new' aliens. From the ultra strong race, the all male Moclans (the episodes which began as a joke on how exactly a race of all-males make children, turning into serious turn of events when the child turns out to have a 'deformity'; pretty much summarises this show) Hell I even like the slime being which is purely there for comedy.

This show deserves much, much better praise from the critics. While it isn't without its flaws, it's certainly not as bad as the press make it look. I'm a huge Star Trek fan, and this show hits all the right chords to be exactly what fans like me want: action, drama and comedy all mesh up really well in

Of course Seth McFarlane had to insert a more comedic element compared to the other Star Trek series, otherwise it would have been just a rip-off. But I feel that in this case it's never "too much", and it's actually very respectful of the material used for inspiration. In fact, the creator acknowledged from the start that this is an homage to Trek.

And speaking of respect, I feel this is way, WAY more respectful than the abomination that is Star Trek Discovery (which I will probably cover in another review).

Granted, there's nothing really "new" here. A lot of the plot points, stories and characters are very similar to what we've all already seen in previous Treks, but that is not the point. It's a great cocktail mixing what fans like me love about Star Trek, with some touches of comedic elements and new protagonists.

The music is also spectacular, with the main theme being much better than the one found in ST:D; it feels much more "Trek" like.

Give it a shot! You'll definitely like this if you're a real Trek fan like me!

It is ultra poor man's Star Trek; which also tries to be funny. It fails on both fronts. It is barely funny. I'll watch another episode to see if it gets better. I think it will get cancelled soon.

Wow, rarely do you see such a huge gap between the critic score and the user score.

I think the critics had trouble with The Orville because they couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. A spoof of Star Trek, like Galaxy Quest? A rip-off of Star Trek? Family Guy meets Star Trek? It was hard to define, so they just declared it "confused" and wrote it off. Well I **** love it.

Personally, I think the concept is something like: "What if Star Fleet wasn't an elite military organization? What if it was staffed the same way a Wal Mart is staffed? What if the crew were just ordinary people - lazy, horny, jokey, great at their best and ridiculous at their worst? What then?"

I think that's pretty close. But I don't actually feel like I *have* to define the concept. I can just watch the show, and I love the show. It makes me laugh. It's got a ton of joy in it. It's even halfway decent soft sci-fi, to boot.

It's not gonna change your life, but it's just so... enjoyable!

After watching four episodes I was wondering why there is such a discrepancy between user reviews and critics reviews. I then remembered that the critics are typically the type that voted for Killary Clinton and are devoid of a functioning brain. The Orville is very enjoyable so far and has potential to be exceptional. Ignore the zomboids.

Space, exploration, cheesy aliens, nice stories and clever endings, all topped with an occasional sprinkle of humor and a good dose of humanity. This show is turning out to be a true successor to the original Star Trek and follows Starfleet's directives much better than any recent sequel.

Are people correct when they say this is the spiritual successor to star trek, that 'ST: Discovery' failed to deliver? So far, I'll say 'yes'

    Finally a personal matter:
I never really understood why the rating system on metacritic so heavily favors the votes of the so called "experts critics". A rating of '36' is hardly justified while so many people enjoyed this show. Why not show both, the critics *and* user score as Metascore at the same time?

Afterwards we watched The Orville pilot. All 8 of liked The Orville better, and my wife and I both thought The Orville was, against all odds, truer to Roddenberry’s vision than the official heir to the franchise throne.
Less pretentious, funnier, more thoughtful, with more engaging characters—including the Krill baddies.

We found Discovery less believable, despite the cartoony/spoofy elements of The Orville. We found Discovery to be more full of itself, and more straining to achieve its desired results. In Hawaiian Pidgin you’d say “Tryin’, brah?”

Discover wasn’t actively bad, but as other reviewers here have said, it bears the Curse of Abrams—embracing the outward aspects of Trek without the heart and soul of Roddenberry’s vision.

How ironic that the creator of Family Guy and a practising Sinatra-style lounge singer would star in a more Trek-hearted show than the official version.

I’ve also seen The Orville’s episodes 2 and 3 and it gets better as it goes along—less of the 13 year old boy humor bits, more substance. Episode three takes today’s transgender controversies and goes where no man has gone before—with poignant, thoughtful ending to a show that had almost no “action” but was full of ideas and character development instead. Roddenberry lives.

Now if sci fi shows could go where no show but 2001 and Firefly/Serenity have gone, and realize that space ships don't go Whoosh! as they pass you in space...

Its refreshing to see a comedy that's fun but serious enough to be believable. For years we've had the unbelievable premises and often untouchable or unrepeatable morality assumptions of what we expect our future brethren to become. Shows that give us characters of quality and morals that seem impossible (at least considering today's mentality) are unachievable. Who can forget the Star Trek episodes that put the notions of "God", "racial and gender tensions, "meat-eaters and killing", "war and violence" or even "emotions" as notions that were primitive concepts only to find later that the show contradicts itself because too many religious folk were offended by the "lack of God" or too many racists were offended by ideas like Kirk and Uhura kissing, or even the rarity of men in the background of ST/TNG wearing mini-skirts. Episodes of the crew of the Enterprise finding the notion of eating mean repulsive only in later episodes to celebrate Thanksgiving with what would be assumed to be the corpse of a bird, even if it were tofu. The notion that animal consumption was repulsive was just not believable to our sensibilities.

Here we have in The Orville a show that while obviously one would like to believe the characters are so evolved they are more human than most humans are (especially under the Trump regime). The show takes what could be considered as serious concepts (cheating spouses, single sex species, transgendered issues, etc.) along with notions of war, alien species, galactic treaties, not to mention awesome special effects and using the comedic talent of Seth MacFarlane have taken these very serious topics and made them fun and funny and at the same time have made them believable.

Who could imagine a Captain's spouse cheating the Deep Space Nine? Who could imagine a Same-Sex couple on the Original Star Trek? Saurian Brandy? Yes but who could imagine a navigator drinking beer at 10 AM while excited to see his new ship? Or Hologram designers putting such twists in their games as to make their computer generated opponents Mexican criminals (as our President like to think of them) and instead of making them shoot the gamers, challenge them to a dance off?

The special effects, the make up and costumes, the story lines, IT'S ALL FUN PEOPLE!! Where and what are these critics watching? We always were taught that human kind in the future would be better, non-racist, non-sexist, non-violent but we have all learned (especially in the last year) that our world and human kind can be an awful species and indeed racist, and sexist, and violent, all we have to do is observe our President and his words and actions and we will see these horrible traits from the people we imagine would one day take us to a magical world like the Star Trek series. The Orville gives us that magical world but in a way that I believe humans (and aliens) might truly act, especially given in the wake of Nazi soldiers on American streets.

I LOVE "The Orville" and I hope that these few "professional critics" heed the word on the "Popular Vote". Look at the numbers above... 290 Positive 21 Mixed 43 Negative and yes I know these will change but imagine the critics and naysayers being our Electoral College and look who they chose for us.

I hope that people will look at this show with an open mind and laugh and think "How much fun would that be" instead of the (even though I love the series) unbendable and often contradictory world of Star Trek.

Anyway I give this show a rating of a 9 even though it really deserves a 10. I hope we give this show a chance.

With this first episode comes a surprisingly strong start to this sci-fi drama comedy. I watched with low expectations as Macfarlane's other recent offerings have not been good. The opening sizzle shots of the ship instantly reminded me of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Encounter at Farpoint. The conflict and resolution to the first episode was clever and well written. The only thing it fell flat on was some of the humor. I could do without a penis joke. Everything else was almost perfect. A warm, optimistic sci-fi adventure show. Expand

A fun, lighthearted tribute to Star Trek franchise. Watching this really brought me back to how much I enjoy and miss TNG. The Orville is not Family Guy in space, which seems to be what many critics were expecting. Instead, it's something much better: Star Trek without the ultra-earnestness and righteousness that often made shows like Voyager and Enterprise such a drag (IMO). It does wonders when a Star Trek-like universe is coupled with a lighter tone and crew members are allowed to be less than perfect. The series is decently written ... with some imaginative space adventures ... the Orville's crew, human and alien interact well between themselves with some cheeky humour here and there ... and the special effects remind me of that used during the 1960's ... the show itself reminds me very much of Star Trek s 'Original Series' ... however the Orville is a kind of parody / drama of 'OS' ... a series that just does not take itself too seriously.

I found I was interested in the characters and their adventures ... and strangely I actually prefer it to the new Star Trek 'Discovery' show ... I also watched two episodes of 'Discovery'.

    I'll give 'The Orville' a 9 ...

Wow, this is a great show, particularly for Trekkies. The humor is not ROFL (not supposed to be), but light-hearted and just enough to get the parody of the Star Trek series. Very good overall. Funny and with enough serious treatment of the material to make it not seem like a full-blown parody. Seth acting is surprisingly effective I found, not quite as good as some of his co-stars but that's ok.
Some of the humor is more of a subtle parody too I noticed - for example when Gordon is showing off his flying skills when attacking an enemy ship. Then it shows him

Then it shows him celebrating with John and high fiving etc. - but the ship is still shown completing the complex maneuvers when he is not touching any of the controls. Seemingly an error but actually pretty funny.
Critics are wrong on this one and need to give things more of a chance. It is more serious then they were expecting also which I think is making them give negative reviews.
Will keep watching this for sure.

The ORVILLE is more than a space comedy. There are really funny jokes but the entire show is really good. The characters are all unique and strong. The CGI is some of the best I've ever seen (Star Trek: Discovery looks really dark and the story line is just war). The stories so far have been all good. I've been able to watch each episode 8 times without getting a bit tired of them. ThatThe ORVILLE is more than a space comedy. There are really funny jokes but the entire show is really good. After five episodes, my summary is 4:1 positive. Ep .1-2 were at least nice/decent on an unexpected high level, Ep. 3 was very good (despite being serious), Ep. 4 sadly uninspired, and Ep. 5 very good again. If you're looking for the next generation of Star Trek - that's actually palatable - this is it. Modern, comedic, intriguing with good writing.

There are no political undertones or motives, just good new fashioned sci-fi. I hope there's many seasons to come.

A great mix of seriousness and comedy. Of course the professional critics have failed to dislodge the sticks from their rears to realize this. Watch the show. Its great.

The show's smirky tone, embodied in MacFarlane's smug frat-boy demeanor as the captain, never quite gels with the universal humanism the episode is aiming for. [18 Sep - 1 Oct 2017, p.27]

Except for Norm Macdonald as the voice of an alien made of what looked like quivering gelatin, I didn’t find much that was amusing about The Orville’s space odyssey. ... From its opening scene with Victor Garber assigning Ed his ship to the final, unsuspenseful shootout with alien enemies, The Orville moved from one lull to another.
