The first two shows are slow but still have some really funny gags. Seven shows in and I'm totally hooked. Meanwhile Discovery is unwatchable at this point. Thank God for The Orville. Many lols, proper TNG like story. Praying for a season 2.

"The Orville" is certainly hitting a spot as a SF-TV show:
The script writers are not afraid to tackle current controversial social issues in a mature way without ridiculing any point of view - but still, the series never looses its humour.
This "balancing act" is not the easiest task for a script writer - and I think, so far, the makers of this show are managing brilliantly. Certainly

Boy, did I underestimate Seth McFarlane. This is, by far, my favorite show of the year. I actually teared up a bit during the premiere because I felt like I was watching a new episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation...a very special feeling I haven't gotten to experience in years. I love the characters, sets, bright future, episodic format, and clever writing. The episode climaxes are generally satisfying, smart, and often humorous, and there's a good dose of heart and philosophy and thought-provoking moments as well. While I'm watching both The Orville and Star Trek: Discovery, I look forward to The Orville much more each week over Discoery, and it's overwhelmingly more appealing to me so far. I hope for many more seasons to come! Expand

The Orville...I don't think it's going to hook me. A self indulgent, unfunny mess. It kind of feels like someone took a mediocre sitcom and removed the laugh track. The show isn't funny enough to be a comedy, not smart enough to be good science fiction, and not well written enough to be a good drama. It's just so...bleh.

I dislike laugh tracks but Orville felt like it really needed one to create some atmosphere. The actors didn't seem too much into their characters, and the storyline was just meh. It kept feeling like a really (mediocre) legit Star Trek show, which is exactly what it shouldn't feel like. It should be over the top, not semi serious. I'm not sure what they can do to save it, but I'll give it a few episodes hoping they just got off to a rough start. I would still love to watch a good Seth MacFarlane Star Trek spoof every week. Worst of both worlds; weak humor and weak drama. WHY didn't he go straight comedy on this?! Why try to make a lightweight Trek clone, rather than a farce like Angie Tribeca, Airplane, Spaceballs, A Touch of Cloth...even Family Guy? This is one season and done.

The show shoots for idiocy and hits the mark - it is sophomoric and reduced the one black character to a Cliche. This show panders to the lowest common denominator and it needs a reboot to save this mess.

While some of the pilot's dialogue was clumsy, and the characters still in the process of finding themselves; the relatively straight foward plot moved along at a watchable pace, and the show did a nice job introducing the characters, the premise and the setting. The humor was on point, never drowning the dramatic elements, but reminding viewers of the levity and self-awareness of the series.

It is obviously derivative of Star Trek, but this is actually rather welcome considering that the newer Star Trek entries don't have much to do with what Star Trek used to be. Which is why it fills a niche that has been empty for far to long.
It features likable characters, mostly solid dialog, the more positive outlook, the focus on diplomacy and exploration and surprisingly solid social criticism, all of which has been sorely missing from the newer Star trek entries.

The one major thing I would have to criticize is that the humor tends to be way to obvious and rather crude, similar to what you would expect from an american sitcom.
You might think it is a weird criticism that I'd like a Seth MacFarlane parody to take itself more seriously, but considering that the more dramatic moments are done so well by comparison I think it is justified. On that note there isn't as much of this kind of humor in there as you'd expect, which is why it luckily feels more often like Star Trek than Family Guy.
However there are actually some genuinely funny moments hidden in there. Ironically those are when the show doesn't try to be overly funny but rather naturally incorporates more subtle believable humor. It's the kind of humor similar to what you might actually see on TNG, DS9 or Voyager.

In conclusion, seldom have I ever been more positively surprised by a show, especially considering most professional reviews. It manages to capture the feeling of Star Trek much better than Discovery or the Abrams movies could ever hope to and it makes me feel like this is the canonical entry while those are the parody.

This age of HD tv makes the furniture look cheap, although i assume, back in the days it was cheaper. I also hope they will find a way to improve the sound of the voices. It sounds like they are in a studio with nothing on the walls and not in a ship where you would expect they would have pleasant acoustics.

I be surprised if it lasted one. This series blatantly rips of STNG and embarrassingly so. The characters and scripts are wooden. The acting is meh... especially once again MacFarlane. Don't get me wrong MacFarlane is talented man, just that acting is not one of those talents.

The main problem is it can't decide if it is a bad comedy or misplaced action sci-fi. Neither work as The Orville is setup now. The comedy is often misplaced. In fact this may be the one show that a laugh track might help to let us know they were trying to be funny. Unlike the rip off of those other Sci-Fi trek shows (whoops, I mean homage to Sci-Fi trek shows) wherein the humor was strong banter between to characters and humor was in such a way it was added to accentuate the characters we care about. The Orville takes a strange approach with it's comedy. It is not exactly crude but definitely not light, it continuously references 20th century knowledge in it's humor, but, the banter is off perhaps a little arrogant. Perhaps they should decide to either be one or the other. Either be like Galaxy Quest (a true homage) that was a comedy about misfits with some drama. Or be like all the other Star Treks be a serious sci-fi show, honest and caring to the subject matter but with those little light humorous moments. As it stands now The Orville does the comedy badly and the Sci-Fi drama with no purpose other than to preach. It just awkward and rudderless.

Could do without the political and social issues ‘cause the forced way they do it, it plays weak, stereotypical, and unfocused. A few episodes in we are given Rob Lowe in blue makeup to give the first officer a pass on the infidelity that was the trigger event in the breakup between her and the captain. She is now the victim? No one knew about this aspect of that particular species?

An obvious ripoff of Star Trek for certain. They’ve been careful to label fictional future technologies with different names, but they have warp drive, a robot crewman, and a holodeck (the weak literary device to let the writers stray into any setting). Interesting that they opted out of a matter transporter clone. Has most of the stereotypical characters as well. Hoped for better and if better doesn’t show itself, will be taking it off my DVR record list.

Find it interesting the reviews have been mostly all or nothing. Either you really like this show or you really hate it! I understand why people want to like it during a time when Star Trek Discovery is marginal and not worth subscribing to CBS All Access. I just cannot understand how a show that is so close to plagiarism and a weak copy job at that actually wins over such a large fan base. Guess that’s par for the YouTube generation.

If you are a middle aged man who sees TNG with rose-colored glasses, this show might be for you, if not, stay away from this crap. I gave it 3 episodes to not suck and it kept right on sucking. I would not give it a chance if I were you.

Star Trek Discovery, on the other hand, is an excellent Trek show that has kept up with the time. It's a striking difference that makes the Orville look even worse. Go watch that instead.

I wish this had been a comedy. Maybe it would not have sucked. Maybe we could have had something as good as Red Dwarf.

Seth, if you read this my man. I'm sorry. The critics are right as they usually are. Don't read too much into the positive user reviews here. Your goal should be to appeal to a broad demographic of people, not some small biased subset of 40-something year old white males.

I was just not emotionally invested. Additionally to all that, there is not one character I like. The main character is boring and uncharismatic. I hate the fact that the first episode set up his cheating wife to be a sympathetic, helpful figure that had hints towards potentially becoming a love interest. I do give partial blame to the music score that was not very emotional or well done as well as the unsuccessful framing of the shots which, I think, along with some editing pacing wise, could have saved this episode and kept me watching. This show is absolutely charming, fun, actually thought provoking at times, and as a TNG fan, is more like that show than anything Paramount has produced in twenty years.

Yes, it is at times tongue in cheek. No it doesn't take itself too seriously. That being said, it is what Star Trek used to be before it decided it needed to be "gritty": uplifting and optimistic utopian science fiction with allegories for today's issues. Take any lighter TNG episode, add about 10% more comedic moments, and you have The Orville. It isn't slapstick, and it certainly isn't a parody. It is an homage, and a pretty good one at that. I hope it forges its own history, because I'm enjoying it a lot.

Again, love the production values, but the cast just is wrong for this series. It's like they don't measure up to the potential that the production offers. It's like putting goofy teenagers in a Rolls Royce - nothing good can come from that. This show just isn't engaging and I think it's because Seth doesn't have the charisma that past starship captains have had. His immaturity poisons the structure of the show. And worse, I don't see a path to improvement without a near 100% cast turnover, and that's not happening. So, I'm out at this point. I think this show should die quietly at season's end, but I'm sure Seth has a guaranteed 2 or even 3 yr deal, but no show should survive with a ratings share under 3. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I looked forward to this all summer. I wanted it to be so much. It didn't have to be Star Trek or Family Guy, but a nice mix was just fine. However, what I didn't expect was to be preached at.

The first episode was about keeping weapons in 'our safe hands' and out of the hands of our enemies. Actually, the pilot was it's best show, so far.

The second episode was about the evils of zoos and the third, well, I just don't even know which social message they were going for... was it the feminist story or was it a transgender story. Heck was it just a nod to the pro-circumcision people? Maybe it was a re-imagining of the futility of putting an (innocent) black person on trial during the 40s, because the tribunal, which was badly written, and badly argued, was stacked with a prejudiced jury who were somehow expected to 'see the light'... and didn't. It was unsatisfying at best.

I wanted so much more for this show. Leave the politics and social commentary at home. just write some good stories or I think the Orville will have a short run.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. tldr; Well-made, but mediocre.

I created an account just because I couldn’t believe the huge amount of biased Trekhead reviews here. There has been a huge pile on, creating a spacetime anomaly that’s warping the Metacritic score.

The biggest problem with The Orville is that it can’t seem to decide what it wants to be. It’s not really a comedy; even the comedy that’s there is often not funny. It’s far too faithful to Star Trek to be even a gentle parody, in fact you can’t help wondering if MacFarlane feels making fun of ST would be heretical. At best it’s a slightly non-serious Star Trek clone with deeply unoriginal plots.

It really feels like Seth just wanted to do some amazingly expensive ST roleplaying.

There is a kind of achievement I suppose in combining the worst of Star Trek—episodic plots where characters seldom develop and aliens are either never truly alien or discover that they can only truly find themselves by learning the wonders of humanity—and the worst of MacFarlane—‘jokes’ referring to themselves, cheap pop-culture references. The humour that’s there is more lazy Family Guy (or Ted) than American Dad.

The most telling piece of ST mimicry so far was the alien race (Moclans) who are introduced as a single-sex race. They present and identify as male (which initially makes no sense) but in the second episode Bortus’ egg hatches a female. This is classic ST—introduce a difference, an alienness, and then immediately normalise it or reduce it to safely known human terms. It’s Science Fiction with all the interesting bits safely removed. At least human morality didn’t win in the subsequent plot; that’s a small difference from Star Trek.

On the plus side, technically the show is very well made, all the FX are good and the actors do a fine job with what they’re given (which isn’t great). It may even be better acting than actual ST, but on the whole that’s not really saying a lot.

Will I keep watching it? Probably, but after each episode I’ll still wonder why they made it. I also watched all of Deep Space Nine though, so just because I can devote myself to lost causes, doesn’t mean you should!

At the end of the day, if you’re a Trekkie you’ll probably love it. If not and you’re a watcher of sci-fi, you might be scratching your head quite a bit. If you don’t mind unchallenging TV, you won’t mind this. Ultimately, for most people there is nothing compelling here, but it’s certainly not unwatchable (as some have claimed).

For context, I’d give Firefly a 9, I liked Babylon 5 a lot (despite it’s flaws) and a couple of my favourite recent shows are Mr. Robot and Legion.

The Metacritic user score for The Orville is woefully unreliable in this case. Here are a few critic quotes that sum up my feelings best:

"Have aliens kidnapped MacFarlane and replaced him with a clone who doesn't know how to make funny TV?"

    "A superficial and undistinguished voyage."

This was another great episode from one of the most underrated shows on TV. I found this episode to be a fun insight into the private lives of the characters on the show and it was a nice break from all of the action. The show works because the writers know when to inject humor and when to pull back from the action and that balance is the reason why the show is slowly becoming popular.

And yes, I *am* going to be treating "The Orville" as another Star Trek show in this review, and I feel pretty sure most of those involved in creating "Star Trek" shows over the years would agree (not to mention the fact that several of them are writers and producers on "The Orville" anyway!)
Okay, on to my actual review: I'll start by saying you shouldn't judge this show on the pilot, which simply hasn't figured out how to meld sci-fi action/drama with humor and is filled with supremely awkward, sophomoric gags. However, as the first season progresses, we get something that is actually *better* in some respects than the various Star Trek series: a show in which the humor is just one aspect of showing that these characters (aliens included) have very 'human' weaknesses. They get jealous; they doubt themselves; they have bodily functions(!)
If you've seen an episode or two and are thinking of quitting, PLEASE give it until episode 3 "About a Girl," which in my opinion stands right up there with some of the best all-time Star Trek episodes in terms of its painful exploration of a subject that parallels issues on modern day Earth. [The first comparable Star Trek episode that came to mind was Voyager's "Tuvix."] In a similar vein, episode 7, "Majority Rule," is something every parent should show to their social media obsessed teenagers.
If you're more interested in seeing your heroes put through the emotional wringer, check out episode 10 "Firestorm." And if you're looking for more of an exploration of hard sci-fi, look no further than episode 11, which involves the discovery of a two-dimensional civilization and a reference to the classic novella "Flatland."
I read a review somewhere that wrote "This is the Star Trek series you didn't know you wanted." And I really think that's true. All I can say is: thank you, Seth McFarlane.

    Don't trust the critics!

I grew up watching Star Trek NG, DS9, then later re-watched all of the series except the first. I can say that I can't wait for the next episode of the Orville. It mixes comedy, sci-fi, action, drama, what else do you need. Seems like the critics get it wrong more often than they should. I love how they bring cast members from previous star trek series. Great job Seth and everyone involved in making this show!

tbh in the beginning i thought this was a meh show because the graphics are kinda 2000's but after watching it for a few episodes it's really grown on me and the story telling is actually really good in a light-hearted way. It's not serious like Game of thrones that i'm usually into but it's a good comedy show to help relax on a night where you're trying to chill rather then going out totbh in the beginning i thought this was a meh show because the graphics are kinda 2000's but after watching it for a few episodes it's really grown on me and the story telling is actually really good in a light-hearted way. In many ways this is the closest show to ST:TOS there ever was. Weekly self-contained episodes. The humor is sometimes flat, often amazing (Cupid's dagger). They are working on developing a dramatic side in S2. It's the second or third best Star Trek cast of all time (far better actors than ST:TNG). You must see this show and don't judge until you've seen S1E3. Expand

I dig this show. It was about time to get some positive look into the future, to balance all the grim that scifi presents as of late.

Positives of the show: + Characters are likable and act like normal people would. They feel like real people should. + Great visuals of the aliens, even with some "non-humanoind species" shown. + Awesome music. Some nitpicks: - From time to time

    + Awesome music.

    Some nitpicks:
    - From time to time humor doesnt land (around 1 bad in 10 good jokes ratio), which isnt all that bad over all, but sometimes it can feel bit forced. Which gets better in the late season 1.
    - Some of the alien space ships feel bit too clean, but its not all that hard to get used to.)

Overall its great TV and solid successor to the good old Star Trek TNG.

This was abysmal..a show that is inherently flawed in conceptualization..it doesn't know what it wants to be.... it's not STNG and not quite Galaxy Quest, and fails miserably at being in between.

Forget all the official TV-critics. If you like Star Trek (and I mean the REAL stuff like The Next Generation) you will embrace it. The Orville is funny, dramatic, well written, has really good, likable characters and shows diversity not like other TV-Shows, who always try to shove it up your throat. The Orville is the better Star Trek nowadays and I´m sure Gene Roddenberry would be proud. Go on!

I don't like Seth MacFarlane, I find his sense of humour crude, childish and unfunny. I know he can deliver good performance but as an "idea guy" I tend to avoid him. So to no surprise, I ignored "The Orville" when it was originally airing, after all, Seth MacFarlane has his hands all over that show and despite me loving the genre I couldn't force myself to watch this. So to no surprise, I ignored "The Orville" when it was originally airing, after all, Seth MacFarlane has his hands all over that show and despite me loving the genre I couldn't force myself to watch this. Instead, I decided to go with "Star Trek: Discovery" (check my review, I run away after 2,5 episodes). I was a fool.
"The Orville" is a show that, yes, has the MacFarlane sense of humour here and there, even has some jokes so cringy I had to take pause, but it also has the drama and heart of "Star Trek". Somehow Seth MacFarlane captured the spirit of the trek and locked it in place for this show. The topics, themes, characters all are rich and respectful without pandering to anyone. Something that often goes out the window in comedy shows is lore, yet "Orville" keep its lore intact, they never break it and you can see that a great deal of planning went into creating this universe and its people. I remember the first season of "Deep Space 9" and "The Next Generation" as shows looking for their footing, this isn't the case with "Orville", this show knew from the start what it wanted to do and just did it.
If you like "Star Trek", the real "Star Trek" or even sci-fi, in general, you owe it to yourself to watch this show.

This show, The Orville, is more Star Trek than the STD rubbish could or pretends to ever be. Shocking to see how low the critics marked it. I can only blame it on the uneven tone of the first season with it's terrible comedy. Yes! this is Star Trek, not a parody, but a well written, thoughtfull show, it has lots of problems, but given that it is a first season, and given that I have watched the 2nd season, I can tell you the show goes from strength to strength, a good watch for any sci-fi fan.

Like the show. It struggles to figure out if its a sci-fi with comedy or a comedy that's sci-fi themed. But with the fun and moral tail it spins its like some of the best of the older Star Trek shows. The kind of show Star trek can't do anymore.

I don’t get the critics scores. I mean the first 3 episodes, I was like “this is better than I thought it was going to be”, then that 4th episode, I was “wow, that was good”. That episode was a cross between Heinleins (orphan of the stars) and Asimovs (nightfall), but it was well done. Overall this is a good show for what it is meant to be.

The Orville is a comedy version of Star Trek. It's very funny, but it doesn't only have jokes. It also deals with serious, real-world topics in a mature way.

The Orville relies entirely too heavily on its inspiration (mostly Star Trek). It repeat plots, but has nowhere near the caliber of writing required to approach the themes with any of the finesse Star Trek had. To The Orville's credit, the cast and guest stars are killer. Each episode had an interesting backdrop, even if they weren't executed particularly well, or entirely original.

The show's smirky tone, embodied in MacFarlane's smug frat-boy demeanor as the captain, never quite gels with the universal humanism the episode is aiming for. [18 Sep - 1 Oct 2017, p.27]

Except for Norm Macdonald as the voice of an alien made of what looked like quivering gelatin, I didn’t find much that was amusing about The Orville’s space odyssey. ... From its opening scene with Victor Garber assigning Ed his ship to the final, unsuspenseful shootout with alien enemies, The Orville moved from one lull to another.
