Tough to understand how anyone could rate this show favorably! The humor is not humorous, the adventure is not adventurous, the story line is just plain dumb, and the acting is at the level of a junior high school production. The special effects are the best part. That probably explains why so much of the footage features exterior views of the Orville gliding through space. Has potential ... but unfortunately its completely destroyed by frequent unfunny and embarrassing toilet-level "gags". They have no real purpose other than shatter any viewer immersion in the world. Its really hard to watch. Its a shame because under this cesspool there is occasional good and deeper story, but one has to be really immune to poor "humor" to see it.

This season the Orville has been a drag to watch, to many SJW references and not a lot of scifi. How do you make a parody about sci fi and turn it into this? No real conflict at all just 1 episode so far vs the bad guys and its 6 episodes in. Not enough to keep me watching.

Everything about The Orville is a conundrum and it shows. Bad pacing, bad writing, poor character development, rampant tropes and blatant copying of Star Trek, and generally lackluster all around. Pretty sure I've read old Usenet fanfics that are better, they just didn't have Fox providing a budget for them. Critics are spot on about this show. Don't get hooked, it probably won't be back next year.

Vote me down as much as you want MacFarlane zealots and apologists. I'll be waiting here with my buckets for your tears when Fox decides to can this travesty of a show. The only question is when will they do it? Will it make it a full season or will ratings be so appalling that they yank it mid-season?

My impression after having seen the first three episodes and some snippets from previews:

"I must be watching a different show than all those users who praise it here."

Usually I find myself siding more with the user score on metacritic, but on this one the critics are right.

The only positive quality about this show to me were the visuals. There was a real effort made to make this show look convincingly like a "Star Trek" spin-off (not that it claims to be). The CGI is of good quality and many elements seem as though they were taken straight out of the "Star Trek" universe. Elements like the uniforms and their color coding system were almost copied, the computer consoles and ship designs have a lot of similarities and the technology presented so far reminds me a lot of many of the "Star Trek" episodes I have seen. Unfortunately this is where the similarities end.

Considering the characters, their quirks and how they play together, the show is a complete disaster. Almost everything comes out of the blue, which may be understandable for a fresh show, but for those remembering the "Star Trek" series, character development was gradual, comprehensible and often happened in interesting interactions or events.
Not so with "The Orville". Usually a change of mind that gets explained through a joke, makes a character do something they otherwise wouldn't have done, but it often feels more like an excuse for having no explanation at all. Deeply rooted convictions get thrown aside and if you ask how this makes any sense you have to accept that another "moment of comedy" just made it so and therefore it does not have to follow logic or be compelling.
No, from the point of view of characters, this show fails severely.

Considering the actual plot of the episodes, there is more disappointment to be had.
I will not go into the perceived pushing of political views (that the show does consistently) too much, but I want to say that I found it to be very annoying despite not even disagreeing or having a stake in most views expressed. It was just done in such a bad way, it almost felt as though they wanted to break the 4th wall by intention at times. It came across as really bad storytelling.
Otherwise the plot is quite stale. Leaving the political aspects out of it there are no interesting storylines. The show seems very episodic at the moment with little meta-plot developing between episodes. Any surprises or even plot holes get covered by "humor" and events do not have to follow logic, so you are left just passively consuming something with no intellectual engagement. Star Trek was quite a different experience for me.

Now some may feel like I expected "Star Trek" and got disappointed, but that would be wrong. I expected comedy and got none, so I looked at what was left and saw Sci-Fi pretending to be similar to "Star Trek" and even failing at that. That is why I compare it.

You could also take "Firefly" as a comparison. That show was truly funny with great characters and it was consistent in its own world following logical consequences within that world. "Firefly" did manage to combine Comedy with Drama in a Sci-Fi setting in its own charming way.

"The Orville" fails, because it does not sprinkle comedy into a good story with some drama, but rather tries to save bad stories with the excuse of comical events that only exist to make the story go on somehow and aren't even funny themselves.

I hope Seth MacFarlane will find a way to change this show in a way he can actually get his strengths to work in synergy with it. Unfortunately, the talents I have seen from him in the past do not show here at all and the huge effort put into this show seems wasted so far.

The show looks like it could have potential if only it had some writers. I did not find any of the humor funny. I was so looking forward to this series. But I was greatly disappointed with this first episode. This first season may be the only one unless this picks up and improves greatly. The story was bland and fell kind of flat with me and I love Sci fi.

Unfortunately The Orville has both these qualities, in combination with a show name over which one can only scratch one's head in puzzlement and awed disbelief (how did they possibly decide on it?). Seth is so likeable it's hard to be critical of anything he's involved in. But the show I watched yesterday, episode 1, does provide a way. It was his idea and (I guess) he wrote it, either alone or with collaboration. The first script just had to be funnier and quicker than what I saw on the air. Otherwise this dull, plodding thing would never have gotten this far. What could have happened? Who knows? One can only go by the final result. Hence the score above. Expand

It's basically little more than "Star Trek: The Next Generation" with lame jokes shoehorned in. Plus, it can't seem to decide whether to be a parody of ST:TNG, or a serious rip-off of said show. Ultimately, it comes off as weak Trek cosplay. Avoid!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. THE ORVILLE. NEGATIVE 5

    To whom it may concern:

I am 71, an avid Science Fiction fan, and have never, ever written in to comment about any TV show ever before in my life, so you can judge this letter from that fact.
Also I am not a sexist. I thoroughly enjoyed the show Voyager and enjoyed seeing a woman as captain. I liked Captain Janeway. I gave that show an overall rating of about 7 out of 10, the same rating I gave Star Trek TNG.

The Orville deserves a negative rating. -5 would be about right. That's a negative five, below zero. I would rank it lower but the production values bring the score up.

I watched the first show and was thoroughly with the basic premise.
If I understand it correctly the premise is this: No matter how much a woman cheats and betrays a man he should forgive her because it is all his fault, anyway, because he didn't pay her enough attention.
Imagine Scotty telling Kirk “You fired me because I sabotaged the engines, but, Capitan, it was your fault because you wouldn't give me the raise I wanted. Oh, by the way, I've pulled some strings and I'm now your second in command.” And Kirk saying, “You're absolutely right, Scotty. It's all my fault. Welcome back aboard, trustworthy crew member!”

The problem with the captain: He is portrayed as an easy-going mild mannered milksop. If a woman's betrayal could send the character as portrayed into such a descent then he's not captain material in the first place. When he caved in and accepted the untrustworthy ex-wife as his Second that demonstrated his lack of character and of his incompetence.
We have a woman who has already betrayed him once, and he accepts her into a position where he has to trust her absolutely. No way should you grant trust to anyone who has already shown their untrustworthiness. The way this man caved to the demand that he accept her in this position demonstrates his emasculation. This is not the personality required of a captain of any vessel, let alone one of starfleet's.

How did the woman in question get to this position? Nepotism and secret manipulating. Sure, she says she's doing the poor jerk a favor, but she is secretly tinkering with his life, and has connived a position for herself where she can be there in person to watch the fool dance to her tune.

This man is supposed to put his absolute trust in a backstabbing, cheating, behind-the-scenes manipulating ex-spouse. The Afghan's have stoning pits in every village just for women like this. However in the Orville's world, untrustworthy personalities are promoted to positions of authority.

This script panders to the new Feminism ideal of the emasculated Omega male who accepts, with smiles, all the crap a woman feels like dumping on him because it's actually his fault all along because he was unaware of the female's unspoken “needs”. The message that, sure she cheated on him, but it was really his fault because he didn't pay enough attention to her is absurd. This is pandering to the “New Feminism.” Bring back Captain Janeway; She was honest and you knew where you stood with her.

This script reeks of “Feminist” input. It has “New Feminism” “values” smeared all over it, and the stink comes across overwhelmingly on the screen.

The basic premise that backstabbing, manipulating women are are really at heart nice people and all their faults betrayals, and secret connivings should be overlooked because... well, because they're women. . And if any male doesn't, then he's a sexist. This is the message I take away from this show. You folks can fold up your message and wipe it where the sun don't shine.

The Orville sucks big time. Not only will I not watch this turkey, but I hate this show so much I am embarking on a letter writing campaign to have it canceled. This show sends all the wrong messages.

You can make this show watchable if you do two things: Ditch the manipulating b---h immediately and give the Captain some balls. Then, maybe, you can something with this turkey. I will refuse to watch this show again until the backstabbing b---h is written out of the series.
A suggestion: Kill the ex-wife off in such a way the the Captain gets resolve and grows a pair.

I refuse to watch this show again. I accidentally came across the second episode while channel surfing. The alien strong girl was in command. thought, “This is a good character. Great, they already eliminated the two repellent personalities that stink up this show.” the show was enjoyable until the scene cut to the captain and his cheating ex-wife back in their old apartment. I switched channels at that point.

I rate The Orville an F---! (That's eff minus minus minus, not the swear word, though that certainly fits.)

    Sincerely,
    James Morgan

The Orville...I don't think it's going to hook me. A self indulgent, unfunny mess. It kind of feels like someone took a mediocre sitcom and removed the laugh track. The show isn't funny enough to be a comedy, not smart enough to be good science fiction, and not well written enough to be a good drama. It's just so...bleh.

Worst of both worlds; weak humor and weak drama. WHY didn't he go straight comedy on this?! Why try to make a lightweight Trek clone, rather than a farce like Angie Tribeca, Airplane, Spaceballs, A Touch of Cloth...even Family Guy? This is one season and done.

Trying to slog through this show is misery - but episode 7 almost physically hurt it was so bad. Where is the smart humor? The show shoots for idiocy and hits the mark - it is sophomoric and reduced the one black character to a Cliche. This show panders to the lowest common denominator and it needs a reboot to save this mess.

Based on the premiere alone: this series has no idea what it wants to be. Call it an homage, possibly a parody, but to call it either a comedy or a credible drama is really pushing it. So far, it appears to be a vanity soap, from a guy who simply isn't up to writing this kind of thing and who indisputably cannot act his way out of a paper bag.

+1 for the state-of-the-art shots of flying

+1 for the state-of-the-art shots of flying spaceships and the general look of the thing, if that's what floats your boat, and another +1 for the racist robot, who deserves his own immediate spinoff to let his humanitarialnly incorrect freak flag fly. Ideally he'll kill MacFarlane's character off in the very first episode and go from there.

If this POS lasts longer on Fox than "Firefly," which was at least 10x better and funnier and more interesting, it's on the network and us alike.

I be surprised if it lasted one. This series blatantly rips of STNG and embarrassingly so. The characters and scripts are wooden. The acting is meh... especially once again MacFarlane. Don't get me wrong MacFarlane is talented man, just that acting is not one of those talents.

The main problem is it can't decide if it is a bad comedy or misplaced action sci-fi. Neither work as The Orville is setup now. The comedy is often misplaced. In fact this may be the one show that a laugh track might help to let us know they were trying to be funny. Unlike the rip off of those other Sci-Fi trek shows (whoops, I mean homage to Sci-Fi trek shows) wherein the humor was strong banter between to characters and humor was in such a way it was added to accentuate the characters we care about. The Orville takes a strange approach with it's comedy. It is not exactly crude but definitely not light, it continuously references 20th century knowledge in it's humor, but, the banter is off perhaps a little arrogant. Perhaps they should decide to either be one or the other. Either be like Galaxy Quest (a true homage) that was a comedy about misfits with some drama. Or be like all the other Star Treks be a serious sci-fi show, honest and caring to the subject matter but with those little light humorous moments. As it stands now The Orville does the comedy badly and the Sci-Fi drama with no purpose other than to preach. It just awkward and rudderless.

Could do without the political and social issues ‘cause the forced way they do it, it plays weak, stereotypical, and unfocused. A few episodes in we are given Rob Lowe in blue makeup to give the first officer a pass on the infidelity that was the trigger event in the breakup between her and the captain. She is now the victim? No one knew about this aspect of that particular species?

An obvious ripoff of Star Trek for certain. They’ve been careful to label fictional future technologies with different names, but they have warp drive, a robot crewman, and a holodeck (the weak literary device to let the writers stray into any setting). Interesting that they opted out of a matter transporter clone. Has most of the stereotypical characters as well. Hoped for better and if better doesn’t show itself, will be taking it off my DVR record list.

Find it interesting the reviews have been mostly all or nothing. Either you really like this show or you really hate it! I understand why people want to like it during a time when Star Trek Discovery is marginal and not worth subscribing to CBS All Access. I just cannot understand how a show that is so close to plagiarism and a weak copy job at that actually wins over such a large fan base. Guess that’s par for the YouTube generation.

If you are a middle aged man who sees TNG with rose-colored glasses, this show might be for you, if not, stay away from this crap. I gave it 3 episodes to not suck and it kept right on sucking. I would not give it a chance if I were you.

Star Trek Discovery, on the other hand, is an excellent Trek show that has kept up with the time. It's a striking difference that makes the Orville look even worse. Go watch that instead.

I wish this had been a comedy. Maybe it would not have sucked. Maybe we could have had something as good as Red Dwarf.

Seth, if you read this my man. I'm sorry. The critics are right as they usually are. Don't read too much into the positive user reviews here. Your goal should be to appeal to a broad demographic of people, not some small biased subset of 40-something year old white males.

I’ve tried watching this show 4 different times and I can’t make it all the way through. The humor is lame and the characters are horrible. I just don’t get it. I can’t believe anyone watching this. This show will be gone soon

This review is based only on the first episode because that's all I needed to see. If not for the simply gorgeous set designs and CGI I would've given this a 2 out of 10. The jokes don't land. The character interaction is awkward. Scenes that I assume should've been emotional were not. The final resolution does not feel earned because there is no suspense. I was just not emotionally invested. Additionally to all that, there is not one character I like. The main character is boring and uncharismatic. I hate the fact that the first episode set up his cheating wife to be a sympathetic, helpful figure that had hints towards potentially becoming a love interest. I do give partial blame to the music score that was not very emotional or well done as well as the unsuccessful framing of the shots which, I think, along with some editing pacing wise, could have saved this episode and kept me watching. No need to compare this to Star Trek. This is **** all on its own. Bringing up more political and social issues than sci fi. Its greatest flaw is that the stories are illogical.

I have to say that more and more, I get the impression that tv critics are a little clique who all get together and decide collectively whether they are going to sink or float new shows. This show is absolutely charming, fun, actually thought provoking at times, and as a TNG fan, is more like that show than anything Paramount has produced in twenty years.

Yes, it is at times tongue in cheek. No it doesn't take itself too seriously. That being said, it is what Star Trek used to be before it decided it needed to be "gritty": uplifting and optimistic utopian science fiction with allegories for today's issues. Take any lighter TNG episode, add about 10% more comedic moments, and you have The Orville. It isn't slapstick, and it certainly isn't a parody. It is an homage, and a pretty good one at that. I hope it forges its own history, because I'm enjoying it a lot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Orville is a bad rip off.
You have a "Worf" hatcher, a Bellana that break walls, a Data that's a mix of C3PO with crap.
Nothing original, and its not a humor show, and he best thing: they are trying to be serius with that thing.

"Pria" is my "jump the shark" episode. Charlize Theron, an A-list film actress, on this show, this early in season 1, kissing and in bed with Seth. Really?! And it just seems like he played a trump card to get this high production value series, like he was "I've always wanted to be a starship captain on television and you guys owe me." Again, love the production values, but the cast just is wrong for this series. It's like they don't measure up to the potential that the production offers. It's like putting goofy teenagers in a Rolls Royce - nothing good can come from that. This show just isn't engaging and I think it's because Seth doesn't have the charisma that past starship captains have had. His immaturity poisons the structure of the show. And worse, I don't see a path to improvement without a near 100% cast turnover, and that's not happening. So, I'm out at this point. I think this show should die quietly at season's end, but I'm sure Seth has a guaranteed 2 or even 3 yr deal, but no show should survive with a ratings share under 3. Expand

I've tried several times to watch this show and all I can do is laugh at its phony premise as being science fiction. This is more about Seth McFarland than it is about telling a good story. Not only is the acting and the scripts terrible, it isn't even decent sci-fi. Forget it. YouTube has better stories than this junk.

lowbrow, unfunny, cringefest. i could barely sit through the pilot, if this gets much better afterwards then sorry.
it should be always suspicious when either the critics or users hate something this much.

The Metacritic user score for The Orville is woefully unreliable in this case. Here are a few critic quotes that sum up my feelings best:

"Moved from one lull to another."

"Have aliens kidnapped MacFarlane and replaced him with a clone who doesn't know how to make funny TV?"

    "A superficial and undistinguished voyage."

This was abysmal..a show that is inherently flawed in conceptualization..it doesn't know what it wants to be.... it's not STNG and not quite Galaxy Quest, and fails miserably at being in between.

The show's smirky tone, embodied in MacFarlane's smug frat-boy demeanor as the captain, never quite gels with the universal humanism the episode is aiming for. [18 Sep - 1 Oct 2017, p.27]

Except for Norm Macdonald as the voice of an alien made of what looked like quivering gelatin, I didn’t find much that was amusing about The Orville’s space odyssey. ... From its opening scene with Victor Garber assigning Ed his ship to the final, unsuspenseful shootout with alien enemies, The Orville moved from one lull to another.
