It's the second episode that fully solidifies that this new season is a turning point for The Mandalorian's storytelling—the world may still feel small around Din, but it's growing by leaps and bounds too.
-
The show goes back to the beginning to demonstrate how much has changed even if its core dynamic remains the same, laying solid groundwork for a host of new conflicts for the Mandalorian and his foundling to face together.
-
If the new season feels more laden with plot, it’s still a show that leaves room for the simple joys that made its first two seasons so beloved.
-
It’s still a thrill and a pleasure to see them back on their way.
-
While both main and sub plots are getting a patient build-up, the opposite is true for the action. We’re put right back in the thick of it from the first sequence onwards.
-
As before, The Mandalorian’s stories strike a smart balance between familiar stomping grounds and recognizable faces, and fresh frontiers and foes.
-
The story feels less solid than it did in the first two seasons, but thrilling adventure and extreme cuteness remain the joint order of the day in the ongoing adventures of Mando and Grogu.
-
Success has its privileges, including the freedom to get off to the relatively slow start that The Mandalorian indulged with its third-season debut, reintroducing the central players and a few peripheral ones, while laying out the bones of a plot that might be called Mission to Mandalore.
-
Satisfying enough. Neither has an action scene to rival the season two premiere. Neither has major plot developments to rock the Star Wars landscape. And yet there’s something to be said for a show that’s consistently satisfying.
-
“The Mandalorian” answered the main question tied to Seasons 1 and 2. Now, it needs to find a new way forward, and there’s a galaxy of paths available.
-
The first two episodes of the season are not boring. ... However, things feel rudderless at the moment, in search of a destination beyond Din’s pilgrimage, in ways that seem to shout about how thin the show now feels.
-
Andor has shown what Star Wars can become with sufficient ambition. In that context and, for all its positive qualities, the once gleamingly exciting Mandalorian is in danger of losing its shine.
-
None of this was extremely thrilling, and there’s no one exciting thing that sets up the rest of the season as a must-see Star Wars adventure, but The Mandalorian has always been fairly good at surprises. We’ll have to see if that’s still the case.
-
This is a premiere that would’ve greatly benefitted from being one of two episodes released today, or part of a longer episode that actually took us somewhere — anywhere — new.
-
Fans have griped that “The Mandalorian” and lightweight series like the ones that Favreau and Filoni have made thus far are robbing “Star Wars” of what made it special and often, especially with a disposable throwaway, more-of-the-same episode like this, it’s really hard to argue with.
