Galadriel is without a doubt the worst character. The series creates a warrior galadriel, who is extremely forced. There's little of Tolkien in this 'Tolkien epic'. The acting is dire and even laughable throughout. The story, or lack thereof, is a convoluted, nonsensical mess. The characters have been butchered and are now rendered unlikable and unrecognisable. The filming is amateur at best, with digital halo and make-up clearly visible. ll start with the positives. The music is great, not as good as Howard Shore did on the original trilogy, but still holds up. The landscape shots were beautiful. Gil-galad and Durin were just believable as characters insde tolkien's world. The rest is just bad. The story doesn't have anything to do with anything that Tolkien wrote, apart from some familiar names. The first two episodesll start with the positives. Gil-galad and Durin were just believable as characters insde tolkien's world. The rest is just bad. The story doesn't have anything to do with anything that Tolkien wrote, apart from some familiar names. The first two episodes fail at delivering any sort of memorable scene. The pacing is off, almost nothing of real importance happens. The plot has its main character, their version of Galadriel, out on a quest that leads her nowhere during the first two hours of this so far. Then there's the dialogue. Poorly written, mediocre at best only thanks to a couple of talented actors. They try to embellish dialogue lines with big and profound sounding words, to say nothing of the sort. It tries to be clever way too hard, and fails its attempts at it. Natural conversation is nowhere to be found, instead we get a dull exchange of cliche lines we've heard and read in any school play. The romance between two of the characters seem to be written with every cliche imaginable, almost making it a parody of itself. But the show takes that seriously, and repeatedly uses tropes of the genre when no narrative resources were available to the writers. They couldn't get to write Galadriel as an intelligent character, so everyone else around her is dumbed down. The writers lack so much talent, that the only way they have to achieve this is by Galadriel's intuition, wich must be pretty strong since she conveys exposition about events way in the past with great detail as dialogue with other characters. Just lazy. The acting is also lacking. None seem to be able portray their characters emotions without looking like a caricature of themselves.
At the end of this, even if you forget that this show has anything to with Tolkien's legendary, the show itself doesn't hold up at all. Sure some visuals are beautiful, but the writers lack any talent required to manage this task on their hands. And it shows.

Also awful is the fact that the series feels more like a soap opera than high fantasy. The music which added to the prestige of Peter Jackson's works is terrible and non-existent in this series. There's essentially no theme or piece that lifts scenes and adds vitality and emotion. With this budget they should have gotten a much better composer than Bear McCreary - who I have only heard doing "Agents of SHIELD" but even then, the show's theme song was distinct and recognisable.

It's incredulous for a corporation to spend this much on a show and have it suck this bad. This is a terrible series.

I liked the Durin and Gil Galad. But that's pretty much it.
I won't mention lore accuracy here, since the show for the most part is completly lore inaccurate. Galadriel is awful as the elves are generally. They are more or less eternal beings and e.g. Galadriel is 1000s of years old, but still they behave like not fully grown up humans. Also the Elves

Landscape shots are fine, but often too much editing/CGI. The music isn't bad, but does not feel like a consistent piece, more like different themes mixed together. Also it often is to overpowered and kinda in your face.
Well I kind of did accept the black elf and all, but the mixture of different ethnicities really stands out negatively. It just doesn't work like that. It would be quite easy to have all skin colors and ethnicities represented in the show but each as their own people. But they do it the lazy / bad way and it is not even like they got many ethnicities covered, only black/latino so weird way of "representing everyone".
In terms of what happens, well not much in the first two episodes. But Galadriel swimming thousands of miles from Valinor to middle earth is really ridiculous.
Hobbits (or not actually Hobbits, but Harfoots :/) are a bit annoying. They try to replicate the charme of the shire and very shortly it gives a bit of the warm feeling. But they spend too little time with it. Also why on earth (or rather on Arda) should they look like Hobos who rolled themselves in mud?
The dialog often isn't very good. Often it feels like they tried, but often the result is poetry without substance, nice words but not wisdom in it.
So yeah not great not at all. As a generic fantasy series it could be something average, but clearly it isn't what they aimed for and for Tolkien anything short of Great isn't good enough.
Episode 1 feels like a beautiful but hollow shell, just not much substance. And in episode 2 the shell starts to break apart.

    - elrond e gil galad fracotes.

Talented and personable cast of actors are often jarringly miscast and given script that emulates the tone of LotR trilogy on the surface albeit with significant errors, foregoing Tolkien’s original intent to disperse a frenzy of token messaging at the cost of coherence and enjoyment. Beautiful art direction, lovely sets and costumes are powerless to salvage it, as the intent and thus the spirit of Tolkien’s writing is entirely absent in lieu of jarring story and character choices in rapid-fire succession, making a mockery of the actual meaningful messaging in the actual lore. Showrunner and even director expemplify fundamental lack of understanding of what this world is about. The end result is the most expensive cheap show of all time that despite the artistry and love put into its production cannot overcome the shortcomings of its storytelling which in its absolute disregard for its audience manage to make the problematic Hobbit trilogy appear like Lawrence of Arabia. The end result is a show that is very uncaptivating despite its often stunning visuals.

Roteiro catastrófico, ritmo cansativo, atuações ruins. CGI top. Duas horas de show sem nada demais. Não senti vontade de ver mais. Não sei se consideraria uma fanfic de Tolkien, pois para isso os escritores precisariam ser ao menos fans, o que fica claro que eles não se importam com a obra do Professor.

Basically a lie. This has nothing to do with Tolkien and has nothing to do with the spirit of Tolkien. When they didn't get the rights to the books they should have quit. Even without the insult to Tolkien the whole thing is terribly written and acted and is unimaginably awful.

This series takes Tolkein and shoves a bomb up his arse and uses his guts to write a storie and calls it Lord of the rings based. This script will be used to flame the fires of hell while the writers of this show burn on them. The way they destroyed Tolkeins world and then still has the audacity to say they're fans of his works is a joke.

Even now, I play the online video game almost daily, I had very high hopes for "Rings of Power". They were cruelly dashed. Here are just a few reasons why:

The show-runners' complete disdain for anything resembling good writing is sad.

The characterization is so bad, you almost wish that the bad guys win at least one fight.

Nay, I shall not talk to my beautiful second cousin as if she were there. I shall exposit plot points and review history that she lived through as if she were a kindergarten-aged human.

Even in a fantasy world, there is such a thing as physics (warm breath + cold = fog [duh]).

You chase your enemy across the world over centuries...on foot? Really? No budget for horses?

Elves using sharp tools to desecrate and wound living trees for any purpose at all? Inconceivable!

The costumes look like they were bought at a consignment shop after all the prom dresses were donated. The tacky ones, mostly.

Derivative scenes and call backs (climbing ice walls, salted pork, etc.) are worthless and weak.

When people in completely different parts of the world see a meteor, it does not seem to be going in the exact same direction at the exact same height. See: physics.

No matter how unnaturally hale and hardy they are, no elf, no matter how high-born, can swim across 2,000 plus miles of ocean. Any elf who would try must be insane or mad with grief (see: Amroth, future king of Lothlórien).

Look at this magic dagger I found. It can disappear into my body cavities without a sheath and reappear when needed by the plot! It's invisible only when it needs to be! So precious...

Ten out of ten wargs surveyed will not choose blackberries over miniature hominin lunch.

Accents = Class. Irish = Poor. Lower Class English = Middle Class. Upper Class English = Rich. Scottish = Rich but vertically-challenged with lots of burping.

In the end, do yourself a favour and just re-watch Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" extended edition movies for the seventh time.

Maybe, just maybe, if the public tuned out and ignored this abomination, it, unlike Sauron, might just be redeemed. That would require Amazon firing all the writers, directors, and show-runners and starting over...but this humble rock of a Tolkien fan is looking up, not down, just to see if that really works.

PS So far, the water is quite deep...and getting colder by the moment...so dark...

Afterword: Note that nothing in my review makes any comments about the skin color or ethnicity
of the actors. Although arguments can be made that the ancient Norse and Saxon sagas and histories that Tolkien based his writing on involved 100% melanin-challenged protagonists (reflecting the population of the eras), times change. At one point in the not-so-distant past, according to current biology, the inhabitants of what we now call Britain looked much more like modern day sub-Saharan Africans.

In the end, I don't care what your skin color is, as long as your acting, based on an excellent script and deft directing, makes me BELIEVE that I am once again in the Middle Earth I dreamed of as a child while reading the original texts. On the other hand, if the writing, acting, directing, and costumes are garbage to the point that middle school fan fiction and theater production values would IMPROVE on the quality of this execrable final product, well, it doesn't matter if the actor is pinkish-beige, green or purple, now does it?

Then I saw the casting and realized that they had created black dwarves and elves (which don't exist in Tolkien's world) instead of creating POC (people of color) characters from Harad and Rhun to meet Amazon Studios' diversity requirements. Then I learned that they had made Galadriel an armor clad army leader (which she never was, her husband Celeborn and Elrond lead the armies during the 2nd age) and had made Elrond an architect and politician, neither of which is consistent with the lore. Then I saw they had a woman playing Annatar/Sauron which resulted in him looking trans. Then I saw that they over-relied on CGI even more than Peter Jackson did while making the Hobbit. Then I saw that the opening of the show is literally just a ripoff of the opening for soap opera Young and the Restless. Then I saw cheesy rope a cheesy rope fighting scene.

This show is just a laundry list of bad decisions by Amazon and the showrunners. The only highlight at all is the opening theme song composed by LOTR/The Hobbit composer Howard Shore. I truly think this will be the most expensive flop of all-time, and we already have multiple insiders suggesting that the future of Amazon Studios rests on this series, if it fails, Amazon may close Amazon Studios and rely solely on 3rd party licensed shows and movies to push Prime Video.

There’s a true artistry to these visuals, like it has been meticulously storyboarded for years before a camera rolled and now we are seeing the fruits of that labor. I appreciate that level of calculation in a fantasy epic which paints in such broad strokes. This story is told visually, and with confidence. There are moments where less expensive shows would cut away but this one sticks with it and gives you the full sequence. That’s what elevates it— it feels like they had free reign to make every sequence as good as it could be, not just as good as they could afford. On the script side there are some great lines and moments in here. “The wind that seeks to blow out a candle can also stoke its flames.” [paraphrasing]. That and several other lines caught my ear as going above and beyond the call of duty for a television series into literary territory. The pacing oscillates between slow medium and fast throughout its runtime and that kept me on my toes. The slow parts can be a little slow and episode 2 in particular felt more like a TV show than the first episode but overall it maintains a good balance of series/movie hybrid. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Acting is exceptional thus far, especially Galandriel. There is something about this woman that draws my attention. Every character is well done and they all have something intriguing about them. The actors are well cast and I like what everyone is doing with their role.

I think considering the ambition of this project the creative team knocked it out of the park. This is high stakes filmmaking and it’s paying off so far.

But I have to tell you.
Rings of Power is hurting my head!
It has that annoying modern thing of the camera constantly wobbling and tilting and moving while constantly zooming in on tight shots that show you NOTHING. I feel sick. This alone is going to prevent me from watching too much longer.
They've butchered basic law and facts of Tolkien's world and my God it's cheesy.
There is constant "it was a time"...type voiceovers with booming dramatic music not in keeping with what is occurring on the screen, i.e. Tragic battle music and all the elves are doing is walking over a sunlit field.
This show is what you'd get if you hired a sixth form acting troupe and gave them unlimited budget.
The problems here are those that afflict most modern entertainment. Everyone knows the skills, but they can only copy. They've been taught all the film making skills and techniques so they use ALL of them, all at once but they don't have the heart to know HOW to use them and when each technique is appropriate.
They know the ingredient's that go into a story but not how to weave them into a compelling emotional plot so they just chuck in all the plot ingredients.
In short, there is a lack of heart or imagination in modern film and TV making. Obsessed with metrics and formulas they can only attempt to recreate other people's passions... without the passion. It always fails and has done again.

Just take Galadriel's case: She is one of the oldest and wisest elves in Middle Earth, wife of Celeborn and mother with him of Celebrian (wife of Elrond and mother of Arwen). But now here in this "thing" she is a young and enraged warrior who has abandoned her family (not even mentioned in the show) in a revenge quest to kill a random troll in the far north in order to avenge her brother (died thousands of years before, while her other two brothers have been removed from their canon).

When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama.
