I think this show has tremendous potential. I'd say there is so much uncalled-for criticism especially over politicised. This is a great adaptation of the works of Tolkien and I can't wait for it to continue.

If you're a fan of fantasy, just go in and enjoy the world building and the story development. It'll take time to introduce new characters. Americans just want every episode to have action or to end in some cliffhanger. For a fantasy series to explore as much as possible of its world, it needs time. You can't expect the action of a 3hr movie in a 8+ hr series (or possibly more, if there are more seasons to come). I've watched foreign series from Asia that are 40 hour+ long and it takes a while for the story to develop and there may be a lot of miscellaneous mini-adventures or non-essential story lines mixed in, but in the end, things feel epic. I have no worries about this series at its current rate. Looking forwards to more of it! Expand

Great production values, good performances, generally, good writing. Didn't really care for using the dwarves as comic relief, it jars with the tone of the rest of the story. this isn't The Hobbit and the worst of Jackson's work should be left behind.

Imagine, for a moment, that you'd never heard of JRR Tolkien, or Peter Jackson, or The Lord of the Rings. You just heard there's a great new fantasy series coming out that you have to watch. You switch on - are you disappointed?

From the opening shots, you can see that these creators mean business. The designs, effects and cinematography are the best you've ever seen in a TV show, in fact, better than in many movies. You meet characters, many of them - there isn't much time to get to know them, but the scripts and actors do a great job at nailing them down very efficiently, so by the end of the first hour they are growing clear in your head: the driven, obsessive, implacable Galadriel, the shrewd politician Elrond, the world-weary King Gil-Galad, the stolid soldier Arondir and his forbidden mortal crush Bronwyn, and her truculent, secretive son Theo. You meet the ramshackle, chaotic Harfoots and the feisty Nori who is always pushing boundaries and getting into scrapes; it feels like more than an hour must have passed, because already these people are starting to feel like old friends.

Is it Tolkien? Yes and no. Yes in a good way - it's a new story grown in the same soil as the original books, based on Tolkien's barely-sketched synopsis of the Second Age of Middle Earth. And also No - but again, in a good way. It recognises that a story whose genesis began nearly a hundred years ago can be raised, developed and adapted to modern storytelling styles and methods. It doesn't have to stagnate, and be merely a literary relic - something that was written once, long ago. The Rings of Power returns Middle Earth to how it should be: a living, breathing, ever-growing and evolving land of myth.

If you're a fan, watch it. If you've never got into Middle Earth before, still watch it. This might finally be your way in.

It is a visually beautiful show, it is in process and you have to give time, to see how the story unfolds. But it is completely enjoyable. It should not be considered a literal adaptation of Tolkien's work, but rather, a work inspired by it. The error was marketing to clarify too late the restrictions on use of the material.

What the show runners have managed to do is capture the spirit of Tolkien. The careful world building and slow unfolding of each character’s thread shows how much respect this show has for its audience. It’s clear the show runners approached the material with the same devotion to beauty and love as their protagonists, who are charismatic and very well acted. The folks panning this show for straying from the source material clearly love the canon and want to defend it. But consider how miraculous this show appears in an environment of formulaic, adrenalized big budget shows that sacrifice moral imagination for intensity, or Amazon’s own Wheel of Time series, which has deconstructed its source material to the point of being almost unrecognizable. This is a rare show, precious! I hope the fandom eventually embraces this show; we need more fantasy like this. Expand

I fully understand the anger about 'woke' shoehorning of diverse actors in this show. Tolkien intended Middle Earth to be evocative of European folklore and as such I do believe the appearance of the characters ought to be faithful to that. Rings of Power wastes no time in "subverting the expectations" of the viewer in that respect and the pushback I think is not surprising. It will be, II fully understand the anger about 'woke' shoehorning of diverse actors in this show. Rings of Power wastes no time in "subverting the expectations" of the viewer in that respect and the pushback I think is not surprising. It will be, I suspect, a rather jarring running theme in this show. One thing that jumped out at me was the (diverse) elf/human romance that is shoved in our faces almost immediately and feels very awkward and forced. There seems no real point to it other than the obvious.

However.... If you can ignore the above, I think you will find a very enjoyable show here. Sure, the acting is hit and miss, the dialogue is a bit am-dram and yes, it goes without saying that Galadriel, the female lead, is yawn-inducingly Mary Sue at times.... BUT... my goodness is the world of Middle Earth ever BEAUTIFUL, as are the costumes and the effects. Top brownie points to the artists/designers because this aspect alone is good enough to keep me watching for the time being.

So I'd say don't be put off giving this a watch by the somewhat hysterical backlash (1's and 2's are not objectively representative of the show's quality). It's critics are entirely justified in their complaints, but there's still a lot to enjoy here.

Was it perfect? No. But these hyper negative reviews are ridiculous. It was a solid beginning that needed to set up a multi-season storyline. The visuals were amazing and the acting was solid. It was a little dense and hard to follow all the characters, but still enjoyable. I loved the books, loved the movies, and I'm sure this will be a great show too.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think people are overreacting. I have gathered from the overwhelming amount of horrible reviews that 1. the acting is terrible, 2. the CGI is too good (Idk how that’s possible), 3. it’s too “woke,” and 4. the story is bad

Let me start with one. Yes, the acting is not perfect, an,d at times, it is slightly cringing. But the vast majority of the time, it’s good. Not amazing, but good. (remember, this is a tv show, not a movie) the main reason people believe the acting is trash is that they see one cringe moment and only view the acting from that.

Two. this CGI is impressive. The best CGI ever. But, I do feel, at times, it’s overproduced and gives the show a video game-like vibe. But I’ve only seen that happen once in the first two episodes.

Three. I can’t believe I even have to explain how a story works; it’s NOT REAL. It can be based on things, but to its core, it is FANTASY. FICTION. “OMG THERES A BLACK ELF???? WHAT EVER ARE WE GONING TO FO???” I can not stress this enough; it’s not real. So the only reason you can be mad at a black dwarf or black elf is that you are racist. Period. And I bet you if this show had only white characters and male leads, people would be raving about it. They would celebrate how impressive the CGI is, how the acting is spot on, and how the story feels like Tolkien wrote it himself.

Four. The story is terrible. There are two parts to this argument. One, it’s boring, and two, it’s unfaithful to its original work. I can only speak to the former because I am not fully immersed in Tolkien’s works. To say the story is boring is entirely wrong. It’s the first two episodes. It’s setting the stage. Nothing shocking is supposed to come from these; that happens at the end. Now for the side that argues it’s not faithful to Tolkien’s work, I would have to disagree somewhat. I don’t know much about middle earth, but I know that the general story is correct. But I see how some parts might have differed, but that’s what you’ll get when you make a show based on the work of a dead man. It’s not going to be perfect, so we have to hope that it’s at least accurate in some ways, and it is.

So basically, the show is getting way too much hate, and people need to learn that 1. you need to give it time, and 2. not everything will be as perfect as the books. That goes for anything that was initially a book made into a movie.

The negative reviews are disheartening. This show has me hooked already. The acting is superb, the story is deep and immersive. As a fan of Tolkien's world, in writen and movie form, I really enjoy seeing Middle Earth during a time where the world has not fallen into pieces yet, the civilizations are still grand and majestic. And they really know how to show this off, as we have many moments where the show just presents us a new city and let's us take in their size and grandure. I also really like the overall plot. It's a smart approach, how they managed to put together different plot lines that are very character-focused and have secrets and question marks, even for fans of the book. And despite the extrem complexity of the books this show has been adapted from, they manage to break down the lore in a way that it is understandable and digestable for newcommers. And I really, really appreciate the fact, that they manage to keep the dialogues and characteres grounded and believable as part of their world. My major worry has been that they would try to make all the dialogues and characters "witty", a sickness that has grown over skript-writing ever since Marvel started to become the big player in franchise-production with their Superhero-characters. But no such thing! It's not, that the skript is entirely without humor or fun, it's just more low-key and fits the tone of the world really well. The weaker points of the show so far has been some of the characters. Three episodes in, and there is a huge gap between some of the more likable characters with a lot of personality and some more... let's generously call them "bland" characters. And given that, as I mentioned before, the individual plot lines are very character driven, it's a problem that some characters really are not up to the task yet to really carry their scenes. Another issue after three episodes is, that... not much seems to have happened so far. Given that these three episodes come together to a total of over 3 hours (or approximatelly the length of one of Peter Jackson's movies in the same world), it really doesn't feel like a whole lot has happened yet. I don't mind a slow burn, but if you have several plot lines running parallel, it would be good to have at least SOME of them be a bit differently paced. However, I have to say that I am pleasently surprised. It's a pretty damn good translation of Tolkien's world onto the screen and a solid attempt of creating an engaging narrative for a rather difficult part of the history of this universe. If it keeps going in this way, I will end up really enjoying myself. So far, I would absolutely recommend it! ! Expand

When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.
