This is over-the-top. And extremely fun. And here’s hoping Wyle recurs often.

The Librarians is a charming, engaging addition to the roster of new cable series.

If you miss Warehouse 13, or liked Friday the 13th: The Series, or Tia Carrere in The Relic Hunter, then The Librarians is worth a visit.

With a tone that swings between action and slapstick comedy, The Librarians isn't likely to show up on any end of 2014 Top 10 lists. But its high energy and good cheer are a comfortable fit for the holiday season.

Unabashedly retro, with plenty of high- and low-tech silliness.

TNT complies with a delightful series version of its Librarian TV-movie franchise, mixing elements of Indiana Jones, The DaVinci Code and even Warehouse 13 in jaunty and fantastical capers extolling the power and allure, and sometimes danger, of magic.

The Librarians wears its cheesiness on its sleeve like a gratuitous elbow patch, which it also wears on its sleeve. It knows exactly how imitative and low-budget it is, and it doesn’t care if you know

If The Librarians can balance its elements effectively, it stands to become as charming as it is goofy. But early on, it provokes a different question than most movie-to-series adaptations, asking not if a limited premise can be expanded, but if a perfectly scalable premise should be expanded.

Despite the accordant level of menace, The Librarians never gets too dark. If anything, it sometimes gets too goofy. Still, it’s worth checking out.

The Librarians lacks the fun of the first film--seeing Flynn learn to be an adventurer --and feels predictable and rote.

The series aims for the sass and fast-paced escapades of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and such. That requires a comic tone and timing that haven’t quite gelled in the early going, though John Larroquette as Jenkins, the librarians’ minder, helps considerably when he finally shows up in the second of Sunday’s two episodes.

While the movies were successful, it’s hard to say spinning off a series based on such lightweight material was in any way overdue.

If that's not your cup of tea, fine. There are plenty of dark, brooding, edgy shows on televisions. There's room for one that doesn't take itself so seriously.

For all the people who think the show ripped off "Warehouse 13," check the detail. The original "Librarian" movie premiered 10 years ago.

Warehouse 13 is way better than this. And I don't even like Warehouse 13. Full Review »
