Let me beging by stating: I'm a strong believer in equality between sexes. You won't find that in this show!

This series can literally be summed up to this: women good, men bad. The vile and disgusting sexist and racist writers of this show see equality between sexes like this: men are only good when following women's orders, but god forbid they are straight white male. Don't believe me? Watch the show and keep an eye out for this. All the figures of authority that are autonomous are females, the men in this show simply do not think. What do I mean by that? I mean to say, all the men that are in positions of authority (few as they are) ALWAYS AND ONLY do what their female comrades tell them to, whether they be their superior OR SUBORDONATE! There's always a whisper or suggestion by a woman that gets followed religiously by the captain if he's a man, only the women with authority actually have their own ideas. Check it out, rewatch the show with this in mind. That should tell you something about how the writers see males. In fact, the writers are so fanatic in their gender/racial fascism, that you won't find one single exception to this rule so far (season two).

The above overtakes everything in this show. This is not a sci-fi show, and is only "Star Trek" in name, in reality being a pure, compressed brainwashing attempt charged with political and ideological propaganda, devised, with intention or otherwise, to devide the sexes, sexualities and race (exactly the opposite of the old series)

If you're wondering why the show continues, in spite of the overwhelming negative feedback, in this humble reviewers' opinion, it's because YOU (WE) ARE NOT THE TARGET! Our children are! That's why the show walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, but looks like the golden goose! Shiny special effects and action scenes will absorb children into it, remember your youth? They are sending a message of revolt and revolution, for all the wrong reasons. I hope that revolution will happen, and the degenerates responsible for the show will be brought to justice for their attemps to instigate discrimination agains men (in particular straight white ones), and serve their (in my opinion) rightfully deserved time.

In conclusion: don't waste your money on this, don't fund the propaganda machine. Also, very important! Keep well OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN!

Written by incompetent hacks who can only work in "Safe Spaces," produced by a bevy of inept morons who fool themselves into thinking they've got the next MCU in their hands, and a champion of malignant characters who are praised and rewarded for their selfish, destructive, and nonsensical behaviour, this program only serves to show how despicable and stupid humans can be and still somehow survive.

The season starts with a man dying because he dared to disagree with the god known as Mikey Spock. She then proceeds to neuter Cpt. Pike, then carries his gonads around in her purse. The season ends with a primitive flying a fighter craft and an admiral biting the big one because she can't be bothered to open a door! Because Girl Power? Nebula the Robot Woman sums up this entire show with a single line: It's all about you, Mikey Spock. The ineptitude is rotten throughout the show, in this mega-advanced technological society people do not understand how DNA works (nuclear or mitochondrial, they got it wrong--Dr. Little Ricky, when he's backtracking, starts to try and cover the writers' butts by saying Mikey Spock has the same mitochondrial DNA and can be the only match to their mystery subject, that's a possibility, but not true. There are only so many human mitochondrial haplotypes and it is entirely possible that one of the other crew members of African descent could have the same mitochondrial DNA.) But then, what do you expect from the people who brought you sonar in space, shooting stars in the absence of atmosphere, and an AI that wants to become an AI even though it's aware and already an AI?

"I Leik Sighance." --Lt. Spork of the USS Enter-at-your-own-risk-BoobyPrize

CBS, why must you destroy the most beloved character in the entirety of the Star Trek universe? What kind of sick satisfaction are you deriving from this? What did Mr. Spock ever do to you to warrant turning him into a moronic, leather-wearing, brain-damaged, whinging, hysterical clairvoyant? Grinding Spock into the carpet so he can be rescued/saved/whatever by Princess Mike only serves to make you look bad, CBS. Turning Amanda Grayson into an ice-hearted harpy who can only express love for Mikey Spock while neglecting her own son was a rotten move. You've taken an intelligent, compassionate, witty woman and distilled her into a sour-faced, vacuous, vicious twit who is too moronic to understand how diplomatic immunity works despite being the wife of a diplomat. Sarek, a confirmed supporter of unprovoked violence and genocide (as per Season 1) continued his complete de-evolution from stern, distant, aloof dad to Spock, into a man whose heart is shattering because he was a Bad Daddy to the stray cat he dragged home two decades ago. There was only room for one child in Sarek's life, and it certainly wasn't his son. When the audience finally gets an explanation as to why this is the case, we learn that the Ambassador thinks his kid needed to learn empathy, because his wife was a frigid shrew and he refused to build a relationship with Spock, so he installed an adopted sociopath into his home instead. Pay close attention and it's pretty obvious that this clap-trap, Mary-Sue-led, lazy-writing marathon of idiocy is set in the JJ Abrams Trek universe. It's the only context in which this show makes even the slightest modicum of sense. STD is the 2009 Prime timeline, that breaks off into the Kelvin, that's going to give us the new Picard show, because Picard is taking place after the destruction of Romulus, as per JJ and the Countdown prequel comic. This also means that Picard is set in the same JJ universe as the reboot movies, STD, and whatever else CBS tries to hawk at us. The story-telling, characters, ships, tech, lighting, clothes, smarmy attitude, 'splosions!, pew-pew-pew, blow things up and ask questions later style are completely incongruous with the TOS/TNG universe. These two visions of the future are chalk and cheese served with a side of oil and vinegar.

I can honestly say that when I was a moody teenager, I was one of those kids to whom TOS meant the future was worth looking forward to and worth sticking around for. Mr. Spock showed that while it's hard to be different, it's absolutely possible to thrive in the face of adversity. That's no longer the case. In order for someone like Mr. Spock to make it in this world, he had to have a better version of what his father wanted him to be taking him by the hand and dictating his life to him, even to the point of choosing his future friends. Watching ST: Discoteque was like witnessing the drawn-out death of a dear friend as they were consumed from the inside out by an aggressive cancer.

The Great Bird of the Galaxy is spinning in his grave.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love this show. I love the inclusion, I love the aliens. I really loved the second season episode where the universal translator went awol - that was a realisitic but imaginative touch. I love that there's so much humour, and I just enjoy everything about it. Then again, I really enjoyed Voyager and Enterprise, so maybe you shouldn't trust my opinion.

The one thing though is, compared to the other series, there is more opportunity to show rather than tell what's happening. The season 1 penultimate episode(?) where they plant the spores on the moon is a good example. There's a lot of hate for this show, and I don't expect people to agree with me of course, but as someone who loves a good sci-fi story, I can't enough of it. I may not be a proper trekkie (gate-keeping is not healthy), but I enjoy all the limits that they push with the star trek universe as well as general sci-fi concepts. And with Michelle Yeoh, they add a little martial arts into it. But the camp is still there! And am I the only one who loves the sound of the klingon language? And the bleakness of the Klingon world? Never thought I'd be so into Klingon.

It lacks everything Star Trek had; It lacks the optimism of Trek, it lacks the stories with social and political commentary that Trek had, it lacks the sense of awe going forward into the future, it lacks the message of peace and cooperation, it lacks the love for science. Basically "Discovery" is the opposite of Trek. The show ridicules the message of peace during season 1 and at one time a character said; "the sound is even broadcasted into space". And yes, that is a direct quote! So, science? Nah, basic concepts of it are thrown out of the airlock. Then we have a Starfleet officer that mutineers and attacks her captain, friend and mentor and she starts a war cause "it is the logical thing to do"!! On top of that the show is full of people screaming at each other and at times it gets gore!

At both seasons the stories revolved around the crew saving the galaxy. There weren't any thought provoking stories like the ones we were used to at TOS, TNG, DS9, even at VOY and ENT. The enemies were one dimensional as if written by teenagers. All in all it is about the phasers, the lens flare and showing their CGI budget.

As a sci-fi show it gets no more than 4. It has terrible writing; The characters are one dimensional, uninteresting and annoying at times (especially the protagonist). The stories are uninspiring, rushed, badly written and at times it feels like a CW show where everything just stops in order for someone to talk about their feelings. It has terrible acting (with the exception of Anson Mount at season 2), where every (other) actor has two facial expressions; 1) normal - wood mode and 2) angry - screaming mode. Directing wise it is one of those shows where the camera rotates the whole time cause....I have no idea why "directors" do that. Production wise it could have been good (it has the budget) but the show has changed numerous show-runners, it has 20+ producers (!!) and the people behind the show have stolen someone else's idea which resulted at CBS and Netflix to be sued for it!

Discovery is not worth of the title "Star Trek".

At its core, despite how dark the show was at times, are the values that underlie the Federation and all of Star Trek. This is what I missed from the new movies, fun as they could be, and its wonderful to see these values return to Trek. I'm not finished the second season yet, but I'm fully hooked and enjoying it thoroughly. For those who complain that it looks modern, of course it does: let go of the bizarre obsession with aesthetic continuity. For those who complain that it's too PC: did you ever watch the original series? Or TNG? Trek has always been progressive, and I'm proud of it for being so. Star Trek's presentation of a future where we are equal and try to be our best selves has always been my favorite part of it, and I'm thrilled to see it continue in Discovery. Here's hoping for many more seasons. Expand

Discovery feels like a generic space action show that could've really had any name other than "Star Trek" attached to it. Almost everything is wrong with this show.

1) Every Star Trek fan knows that Star Trek has a certain feeling. It was present in TNG, DS9, and VOY. Enterprise faltered a bit on this and Discovery doesn't have it at all.

2) Starfleet has completely abandoned everything it stood for and apparently it's absolutely OK to just act willy-nilly and shoot and anything if you feel like it. It seems as if the rules and laws that Stafleet holds sacred have all been thrown out the airlock.

The crew many times act like children, with one character in the first episode running onto the bridge telling the helm to do donuts because it's cool, which would never be acceptable no matter which navy you belong to, futuristic or otherwise. There's a massive lack of discipline on this ship and it's completely unrealistic and gets rid of everything Star Trek has taught us about behaving and having manners. In the previous shows you only broke the rules if you felt it was absolutely necessary, not because you're an impatient ****

It's almost as if the ship is run by adults suffering from extended adolescence.

3) Klingons never cared about their dead because the soul was what mattered. The body was nothing but an empty shell, so making sure the soul made it to Sto'Vo'Kor with honor was their priority, not caring for a dead husk. Klingons are no longer Klingons.

4) Memorable main theme. Discovery has none. ST:E alienated 50% of the fan base within the first 30 seconds of the first episode because of the horrible musical score chosen to introduce the show. Discovery has a forgettable main theme. The only way you'd be able to "recognize" it in an audio quiz would be by pure deduction; it would be the only one left that you didn't recognize.

Star Trek music is not supposed be a generic mediocre orchestral score that doesn't evoke emotions of heroism, bravery, or wonder.

5) The identity politics. Oh, joy...

The first black captain was Cpt. Sisko in DS9. He was a brilliant captain and a brilliant character who didn't have to resort to screaming "racism" every time he didn't get his way. The white characters on the show weren't overtly diminished because of their skin color in order to make Sisko more prominent because of his.

Jadzia Dax in DS9 was a character who through her symbiont had changed gender multiple times. This wasn't anything anyone cared about because it wasn't the main emphasis of the character. They didn't make a big deal out of this obvious metaphor for transsexuality. Instead they emphasized the vast amount of knowledge she had accrued over her seven lifetimes and they made use of her extensive expertise, making her a strong female character based on nothing but her own merits.

Captain Janeway was a great character who needed nothing other than her own merits to stand strong as the show's first female captain. She stood alongside strong male characters and she did so as an equal, not as someone who needed to be made stronger by making her male crew any less masculine.

STD has to belittle and denigrate masculinity in order to make the female characters seem stronger and better. The fact that they're quite badass on their own isn't enough for the writers of this show, and the feminist agenda becomes painfully clear at this point. Elevating women isn't for feminists: masculinity has to be belittled and portrayed as something negative instead of making women just as good as men at everything men do.

Blurring the gender lines is also a clear and overt thing in this show. The most obvious one being the main female character named Michael.

Also, the fact that J.J. Abrams publicly stated that there was an obsession on his part with race (because the Emmy Awards had "the whitest **** room ever") when casting this show proves how incredibly SJW influenced this show really is.

I don't need politics in my TV shows unless they're obviously political TV shows like House of Cards or The West Wing. I watch Star Trek because I want to escape to a better world, not because I want to experience more of the world I already live in. Every single Star Trek show has done this for me except for STD (which is an apt abbreviation for this show).

Much of the humor doesn't work. It's way too talky. Sonequa Martin-Green is fine in the lead, but not stellar. The "Mudd" episodes were genuinely horrible. Shazad Latif is all wrong for his role, as is Mary Wiseman, among many others in the cast that just don't work. I liked Jason Isaacs as Lorca, but the twist in his story is absurd. I thought he was perfectly cast as a Picard-type, and I wanted him to show wisdom not be a bad guy from a parallel universe. There is far too much borrowed from the old shows and I want this Star Trek to go where no other Star Trek has gone before. Especially after "Battlestar Gallactica" raised the bar for TV science fiction. Battlestar was gutsy and had gravity. It's also a failure of writing. Discovery's grandstanding gets old very quickly. Stop talking so much and show me a bold new universe. Note: the season started strongly, but quickly lost momentum after the first Mudd episode and it was all downhill from there. Expand

James Issacs carried it for a bit, so did the Star Trek brand and some of the writing was ok earlier in the series. Also Brian Fuller has made some great and interesting tv (Hannibal had some great moments).
This season begins with an excruciating speech from the main character where she repeats the phrase 'this is who we are!' over and over while the show cuts to the faces of the crew who are looking proud and emotional. It is a truly awful moment.
Then the show gets under way, it's built around a main character who is basically superpowered in her wisdom and strength. They’ve even sacrificed the character of Spock so they can show just how strong and clever she is (he took her place in science academy unfairly (She's his adopted sister), he's a spoilt child and basically if you think he's smart, she's smarter!).
The plot is daft and amateurish, the acting involves a lot of speech-making and manufactured emotionalism. But the effects are good.
All in all this is the weakest film or tv addition to the Star Trek universe to date. It’s too melodramatic, too preachy, it lacks subtlety, the storylines don’t work and the characters are mostly forgettable and generic.
I haven’t give it 0 out of 10, because despite the story-telling incompetence, the show is strong in terms of visual design.

The biggest problem is the complete overhaul of everything. The Klingons design was changed completely, the Klingon society was changed completely, star fleets philosophy seems to be non existent. The Klingons for example never cared about dead body's because they see them as empty shells that once inhabited the soul of an honorable warrior but now the dead bodies are so important to them that they build a ship out of their coffins (first episode).

The caracters are mostly confined to a single trait like the gay or the chubby one or the strange one. Star Trek was always about humanity, the crew and how the crew works together to solve their problems. This series is about a woman that was raised by vulcans in the vulcan way but doesn't act vulcan in the slightest. The fact she has a male name can also be distracting but that's just a side note. Every little bit of the story is the same generic stuff we see in movies every year. Main character has an idea but nobody listens and does something different and after that fails all praise the main characters idea.

This is not Star Trek and it will never be. I do not think the writers or actors have ever seen Star Trek and I am sad that my review has to be this bad because I really am a die hard fan and even own all the DVDs of the other Star Trek series.

If you’re looking for entertainment and a flair for the dramatic this is absolutely brilliant! Watched singular episodes of other series on and off but never got into any.

Like do a donut in a space ship", adding, "it'll be awesome".
That should be all you need to know about this dumpster fire of a show. If you're dumb enough to not understand why that line is problematic, maybe you can get a job writing for Star Trek: Discovery.

As much as the first season missed the mark when it comes to the star trek factor, the second season hits the mark pretty much dead on. I still don't like the way the Klingon race is portrayed but I do hope that they also will find its way back to what it is to be Klingon.
The looks will not work for me in any way but perhaps they will evolve towards the Klingon I love enough so that that will become a minor issue going forward.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's start with the good:
Good Visuals

Now to the bad:
It's a mixture of fanfiction, bad writing, superheroes and social justice. Sounds like Captain Marvel and the new Batwoman? Yeah, Holywood isn't very creative nowadays. So what do you get if you buy the DVD or decide to stream it? Main character is Michael Burnham, she's the best at everything, she's the best Vulcan that's not a Vulcan, she begins and ends the Klingon War, one of the biggest events in ST history, she's the only person who can understand the Tartigrade, she breaks up the whole Terran Empire in the Mirror Universe, she instantaniously resolves any problem thrown at her, she can speak alien languages nobody else can on the ship, she teleports a church 50000 light years away, she creates a time suit and jumps back and forth in time, she creates a time wormhole, she pushes the ship 900 years into the future, she resolves Spock, Sarek and Amanda's problems whenever they need it. Thing is, Star Trek is supposed to be a futuristic vision of humanity, going into deep space, meeting aliens, alies and enemies, handling unexplained phenomena, some of those aliens can literally destroy humanity in several years so they have to think of ways of defeating them and handling the losses of loved ones in some cases, it's not supposed to be a superhero movie. But OK, so it's a superhero movie, is it any good? Well, no, it's awful. The dialogue is awful, there's love triangles, crying in nearly every episode, personal relationships sometimes fill in 1/2 of the episodes or more. So you think, well it could be good if the characters are interesting or have interesting backgrounds or for example their reason why they came aboard Discovery - again not in this Quadrant of the galaxy. Michael Burnham sucks about 80% of the character development time so you're supposed to care about these other main characters that didn't even have names until Season 2? Some of them die and their deaths are about as emotional as the deaths of the extras in movies. In summary, it's a superhero movie with bad dialogue, soap opera elements and uninteresting characters. It's Star Trek in name only, if you're a fan of the previous series, don't watch it, they screw the canon and don't pay homage to the idea of Star Trek - a bridge crew exploring space and working together to solve mysteries. Don't bother.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is garbage.
The bullets:
- Looks great! The folks behind the scenes can not get enough praise from me.
- Not Star Trek in tone, direction or message.
- Characters are unlikable, main character is a huge Mary Sue, who, despite being the cause of millions of deaths due to an ego driven mutiny is everyone's darling and idol and the fat, annoying, red haired girl with more craters on her face than the lunar surface would not have passed Starfleet's training program.
- Disrespects canon in every way it can, tries to insert 'do you remember this?' moments, people, props and even sound effects (anachronistically) from better Trek to try and convince you IT'S a better show.
- Tries too hard to be 'cool' by having characters swear like edgy teenagers. Pathetic. - Action takes the place of thought and depth or developed characters and I don't care about any of these.

How can you kill a half century of excellent stories and canon? This is how. Disrespecting everything that came before it that made it what it is.

Solid start, very interesting story even if it strays a bit too far from science at times. Cast is amazing, such wonderful characters. Especially the lead, player by Sonequa Martin-Green. She is amazing. Very enjoyable and entertaining overall.
