The characters are poorly written and the writers have no idea what a "strong female character" is. They should look to Ripley from Aliens or Janeway from Voyager, or Sam from Stargate to see a well written female character that have actual character development. These female characters show independence, strength, and intelligence by actually working WITH their male counterparts instead of knocking them down or seemingly solving any issue by a miracle (see Mary Sue effect). Not to mention the fact some of the situations on the show are just horribly inaccurate: I mean ENSIGN Tilly becoming First Officer!!!??? In what world would an ENSIGN (who has no command training or command authority) become FO in charge of hundreds of people?!? Are they saying there are no other Qualified LT or LT Commanders on board? And the reason they give is that Saru only "trusts Tilly". Well newsflash, command authority should be given to officers who EARN it, who are QUALIFIED and yes, to someone who you trust. Again are they saying no other LT or LT. Commander rank officers fit this bill? Ridiculous. Also some of the other plots just don't pan out or make sense. Case in point: The Burn. The whole last season was a question of what caused the burn?! Was it an alien species? 8472? Q? Some unknown, powerful force? No, At the end it turned out to be caused by a temper tantrum by a child! Like WTF?

The "writers" (if you can call them that) should look to TNG and DS9 for how Star Trek should be written. There's nothing wrong with bringing Star Trek into the 21st Century. More action and pew pew is fine. Hell even lens flare is OK (in moderation). New characters and stories are welcome, BUT only if they are good, make sense, and have compelling, realistic, relatable characters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh, DISCOVERY... Contrary to what some may think, it is not difficult to satisfy most Trek fans. A new ship, a new crew, respecting what came before, and good writing. Is there really anything else we want? Where to begin.. The first mistake DISCOVERY made was being set in the past. If they wanted to blaze their own trail and change the galaxy in big ways - without disrupting established canon - set it in the future! They want ridiculous new tech we never heard of - Fungus Drives, Data-Like Androids, etc., again they could have easily set it post-VOYAGER and solved these things, but no... And why? Much like the Kelvin Timeline films, it is to milk characters that have already been established and are popular, by basing new characters and stories off them. There is one word for this - Unoriginal. They do their best to screw up already established canon, write themselves into a corner, and are forced to then time jump into the distant future to try and be fresh again. No real character development, except for Burnham who is over-developed and ridiculous. The show is full of cheap thrills and loud and fancy effects to make up for lack of storytelling. Gone are the slow burn episodes, replaced by phaser fights and explosions every 30 seconds like some kind of Star Trek Die Hard. Gone are thoughtful and meaningful discussions about science and the nature of space travel, replaced with Time Crystals and other pseudo science BS. It was a nice run, and Star Trek lived a good life - but if there's anything DISCOVERY and PICARD prove, its over. Squandered opportunities. Expand

Big fan of Star Trek. I've watched every series to completion aside from Enterprise. Discovery has been one of my favorites since the beginning. Very much looking forward to season 4.

The episodes are not very memorable, unlike other Star Trek series. Discovery is a gritty, non-optimistic version of Star Trek with prequel continuity issues, e.g., the Klingon makeover is just unnecessary, holograms, or the "instant everywhere" spore drive. However, some issues will be reverted in the second season.
If you start to think about the plots for a minute, you will often find many issues that do not add up. Some episodes are so packed with "stuff" and contradictions that I didn't even care to follow the plot in a logical sense anymore. The voice-over pathos inspired by the JJ Abraham movies is just another empty element. And most of the characters are shady (especially in the first season) and unlikable. Some characters become charicatures. Michael Burnham, for example, is supposed to be the hero of the series, but since she's not the captain of the Discovery, she's not in a position to make the big decisions, yet she has all the answers and rebels without consequence (because she's always right in the end). As for the production, the series is well done. There are annoyingly overused light glares in the first two seasons, but the costumes, masks, and visuals are very good at movie level. All in all, I wish they had invested the budget in better scripts, stories, and dialogues written by actual science fiction authors.
I recommend watching the earlier Star Trek series, The Expanse, or The Orville instead.

I can't even remember the characters names after 3 seasons!! The over the top homosexuality and transgenderism sticks out like a sore thumb almost as if they are trying too hard. The overly emotional and pontificating dialogue is 100% not Star Trek. Gene Roddenberry is rolling in his grave. SHAME on you!

You better not screw up the Pike series as badly as you have this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Season 3 is absolutely awful. Love Michael. Good character, but it feels like the show was written by Guardian journalists. It’s woke beyond belief, no macho men anywhere, just a rainbow brigade.

The stories are incomprehensible too, maybe because the program just bored me and I wasn’t paying attention.

This show is better than Enterprise, better than Voyager, better than DS9, and very entertaining. The people who come here to hate on it seem to mostly be stuck in a time warp or annoyed about politics, which is too bad. This may not feel like classic Trek but that's kinda the point. New Trek for a new generation. If it looked and felt like the show did 25 years ago it might appeal to all the classic Trek lovers but then it would just be Enterprise again. Or the Orville. If you take it on it's own merits as modern sci-fi set in the Star Trek universe, it's a great show. Expand

Canon is regularly redefined or ignored outright to suit the episode(s). Story plotlines are consistent, but quite a bit larger than life. Scripts are contrived in the service of Race/Gender Representation rather than just good story telling. Action, usually involving space battles, are very overdone. The enemy always seems stronger, almost too strong for the protaganists to overcome. Not realistic or thought provoking at all. The show follows Viacom's other offering Picard, in that it tends to rehash plots from other Star trek shows, which I can only intepret as a lack of originality. I won't be watching the new season. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was onboard for Season 1; I was happy to finally have a new Star Trek show to look forward to. Getting through Season 1 was okay, not the best show but I decided to see what Season 2 would bring. I do not know what happened but from Season 2 onwards (I finished the series recently) it became more and more about pushing an agenda instead of a fun to watch Star Trek show.

Do not get me wrong, I have no issues with strong female leads, I quite like seeing that in series, but in this case, it is so obvious and just over the top. Every "important" person in the show is either female or gay, there is no balance. This has become worse from Season 2 onwards because we lost the main male character in Season 1 somewhere.

Now in essence, this is not a problem for a show, but combined with pushing agenda's, bad acting and having nothing to do with Star Trek it does become a problem.

I can understand why some people enjoy this show, but it is definitely not for me. I would like to see Sonequa Martin-Green in some other Sci-Fi shows.

The second season was the high point with Pike and crew but only went to highlight the larger problems with season one's lack of character development and concentration on Burnham who is unlikable. At least in the past if you did not like a certain character like Beverly for example or that you found her boring. You were only forced to have 2-3 episodes out of 24 to follow her. Now Burnham is the only focus of the show. Even when she is not in it the whole cast can't help but speak about her. By the time I arrived at season 3, the worst of the show showed it's ugly face. Season 3 was by far the worst Star Trek Season that I have ever seen. It seems to only center itself on the worst characters. That all said the show does have great actors who work on it. I could have watched much of the cast in a better written show. I personally like the Dr., Sauru, and the female engineer. Don't get me started on Burnham's connection to Spock. Expand

Most reviews throwing hissy fits over the plot are being overdramatic. And those claiming it is star trek by name only, don't know much about star trek. The number of easter eggs and references to other variations is insane. The plot & CGI are also very impressive. My biggest gripe is the characters & at times bad acting. The main character is a complete oxymoron. She is the most emotional one of the entire crew which is ironic considering she is half vulcan. I wish the writers would stop making her appear like an emotional roller coaster. She starts out emotionally strong, but it has since gotten worse and worse as the series continues. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The storyline is simply horrible...
the anti-climax of the season 3 finale is "meh" at best, the fact that the build up for the entire season resulted in some child simply needing to be told not to be afraid to exit a hologram and everything is solved is just too easy and lame... Every problem they faced this season is easily solved within the episodes in super dumb ways most of the times. Nothing is too big of a problem in this feel good setting where everything gets solved after Michael cries for a bit, ps. She cries in every episode this season, no joke..

The fact that this seasons grand enemy is some low key rebel is boring at best. Also, tilly, need i say more? She rises to captain of the ship not even being within a light-year of next in line considering rank, what for? Because it feels good, i guess? It's so dumb, this series is made for young woke girls who don't like authority and can't stand the thought of following protocol when one can switch it up for some tears and bubbly feeling inside instead.

Utterly gutted what Startrek is build upon, i mean season 1 and 2 took some liberties, but it worked since it stayed within line and simply made a modern version, this season goes completely off route and completely derailes, it's sad, the season could have made an openning for a new intricate future for Startrek, i stead it turned into some new age teenage drama of sorts.

WokeTrek

As a major fan of all that is star trek, i am somewhat disillusioned and disappointed with the latest incarnation. This latest STD incarnation is basically just one big left wing social justice warrior propaganda series, it seems to have zero direction or purpose. It has very little in common with what star trek was and should be about.
The dialogue is so terrible, and especially Micheal Burnham a girl with a boys name, who whispers and tears up with those big puppy dog eyes in just about every episode and every scene, its cringeworthy utter ott garbage! And now she has her hair in crazy 3ft long braids! Its ridiculous. Plus why are all the heterosexual male actors treated like a lower form of intelligence during each episode, i remember one scene were Captain Pike practically gets **** slapped by Michael Burnham and then has to be rescued by her because of his incompetence! Yet chubby Tilly is a hero ever episode! The emasculation agenda is obvious! It just feels like another left wing feminist, LGBT Netflix woke propaganda show to me, its nothing more than a snowflake, social justice woke trek, a poor imitation of a once great Star Trek series. The snowflakes must love it, Otherwise, it truly sucks. Gene Roddenberry would puke on this garbage its been crucified by trans-woke activists!

It's really sad when Star Trek has always been about inclusivity, forward thinking etc. but being smart about how they sent the message. Now they just straight up PUSH their message in your face and make it the only thing the show is about. They keep retconning and trying to destroy past Star Trek it's disgusting this show deserves to drop off. On top of all of that the show just isn't good, has terrible plot holes, the whole crew of the show all have PTSD, peoples characters personalities are just their genders and pronouns. It’s to bad SJW has destroyed Star Trek. This is supposed to be sci-fi show. It’s nothing but a soap opera. They spend more time talking about their feelings than anything sci-fi. It’s a disgrace!

This show was written by angry feminists and sjw's as their vehicle to push their own views completely detracting from anything that actually made Star Trek great in the past. Nothing was written by actual sci-fi fans, just terrible writers and casting directors portraying all the men as weak, all the females as saviors and every_single_episode has all the women crying after every single incident it's literally unwatchable. Weak women can't write strong women they have no context, which is why all the women come off as weak. Weak men can't write strong men which is why all the men come off as a-holes or utterly incompetent... unless they are gay of course then they save the show every other episode somehow and are both stunning and brave guys! Star Trek would be much better off without Discovery having existed but hopefully after the show gets cancelled we can use this as a case study on how using a popular sci-fi series as a medium to push your SJW/Feminist/Anti-Men narrative can NEVER lead to good content. I just cant stop noticing how it is more of political/ideological propaganda/crusade wrapped in a sci-fi cover that turns out to be just high budget VFX with mediocre, single plot. I wouldnt mind the variety (its a sci-fi show!) but this feels like aggresive political correctness promotional video. Its just weird to watch when at every step you get another dose of correctness, especially with shallow, cliche characters that makes it even more apparent.

I dont mind variety, but someone there took it to the heart much more than Star Trek itself. They focused on that "social justice", feminism and lgbt promotion to such drastic degree, that they have lost the essence. Star Trek seems to be just a taken over background to political and ideological preaching, and that is not entertaining.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stop. Crying. For the love of god, stop crying. They're all way too emotional. It's all superjoy or blubbering. There's not been a single episode in season 3 without crying. They're supposed to be Star Trek officers ffs. Burnham is supposed to be raised by Vulcans - have a little composure. And they seem to have a thing against straight men - most of them have been killed off or sent off at this point (Spock, Lorca, Pike and now Book). If this an attempt at female empowerment, you're doing it wrong. Jet Reno (Tig Notaro) seems to be the only character who isn't annoying (she's an island of charisma is a sea of whinge-baggery). And don't get me started on the story... Gene Roddenberry must be rolling over in his grave this his beautiful vision has turned into this travesty. Expand

I had high hopes for Discovery but even though I really tried to like it I eventually had to admit to myself that this is not Star Trek. This is a political statement. Where it lacks in writing and a good story it more than enough makes up with PC culture. It’s not often they allow a white male on the cast, and when they do you can be sure that he is the bad guy.
The writing is forced and dull, often dumbed down and overly dramatic. Often we can see an entire room of characters just crying while violins are going crazy in the background for no apparent reason. It’s an emotional, sentimental jibberish which doesn’t come close to the previous series.

By the end, the Red Angel was a pretty sketchy plot device. It's hard to imagine that the first season was the most creative, but it's looking that way. If the original Star Trek was a western set in space, this is a soap opera happening 900 years in the future. Discovery is going the same way as Picard. I have no reason to care about these people, nor do I believe in their ability to do what they are doing. I think the problem is with the creative team, not the production or the actors. Expand

Nothing about this show attributes any of the redeeming qualities we've seen in previous Trek. This show is more about Michael Burnham and her righteousness than the crew of The Discovery. The crew of the Discovery also lack command structure and treat the ship like its a day at the office. No regard for command and lack decorum for commanding officers. Episode 3 of Season 3 had major plot holes in regards to Burnham and crew finding the mystery to the 'Burn'. If this season keeps up at this pace, I can't see myself investing any more time and emotion on this series. Expand

If you compare this to Picard, which I just as much enjoyed. Discovery is another crew, another story and venturing in the unknown, the crew is more sensitive because humans feel and being far away does that to them.

It is in my opinion very original and innovative, I can not understand why fans of Star Trek be like this, the same as fans of Star wars from the early 2000's were, but looking back they all say it wasn't that bad at all! If you're in for a story, Discovery has you covered but also the excellent vissual effect and new stuff that hasn't been on the show before, consider this, the closer we come to the future the more accurate technology in media is, and Discovery is a good example of this.

Downvoting and review bombing is commonplace from toxic viewers (who see anything other than TNG or TOS as unacceptable). Here is my take as a lifelong trek fan, and my partner who is new to the series: Discovery is not only a breath of fresh air, it is also a look to the future and a wonderful homage to the franchise as a whole. The series started on shaky grounds, found its footing in season 2, and has TRULY come into its own in season 3. This season is thus far delivered with a nuance that is rare in any television. The plot, superb. The delivery and pacing, gripping when it needs to be, not not afraid to slow down and take its time. The acting is top notch, while the visual effects the best in the series. Whether you are new to trek, a lifelong fan, or a "trekkie" this season has A LOT to offer. I truly hope that the audience recognizes the value of this series, before it becomes buried and only becomes popular among these people year later. More discovery, PLEASE Expand

As someone who's watched every episode from every series of Star Trek, I can honestly say this show will be Star Trek Gold one day. I understand why a lot of people didn't like the first and second season. But those seasons were necessary to finally show the Human/Klingon War on the big screen for the first time and the actual devastation it caused and at what lengths the Federation was willing to go (developing Discovery as their secret weapon to win the war). Also the first two seasons give us a lot of throwback love from previous series of Trek; Easter Eggs Everywhere! One of the best Star Trek series I've seen in 20 years. Watch until the end of the 3rd season to really understand why this show started the way it did and was written the way it was written. The actors have so little to work with, you can't help but feel sorry for them. The absolute worst is the lead character who's arrogant and smug and lectures constantly. She's nothing more than a substandard gender swapped Mr Spock.

Avoid at all cost! Watch real Star Trek instead like the original from 1966 or any of the other Star Trek inspired shows that came later like The Orville.

Discovery has really nice effects and the inscenation is great. But the characters are mostly terrible and the story develops after a pretty nice start insanely bad.

Furthermore it is really a product of terrible social correctness as (colored) women are the heroes, (white) men are the bad guys or just idiots. That Star Trek ever carried a message for social justice means not that you have to stick the middle finger in the face of people like in this series. The main character is a boring superhero black woman which is just the best in everything and the whole universe seems only be there for her. The second important character is of course a brillant homosexual, the only white man which behaves brillant and brave and is a "good". The dialogs are terrible and mostly flat. There is not one remarkable character in the series.

Some may sir "hurr durr Kirk did that!" He was a Captain. He would have a little more leeway. He was the head of the ship, he could do that. Michael is a second in command. She attempted to take over the ship. WTF? I feel she should have been court martialed for that. The writing is okay, the flow of the show is okay, but honestly, it doesn't feel like Star Trek. I'll take the Orville over this, thanks. Expand

It makes all previous versions look pale (aesthetically) in comparison. Starts out a little slow with a wrong turn with ill-conceived klingons who sound like they are wearing cheap plastic Halloween vampire fangs. Once you get past that, the stories really take off until the breathtaking, cinematic, twist of a cliffhanger at the end of season 2. Of course there will be die hard Star Trek fans who won't accept the series just because it is so different from previous spin-offs. However, it is a strong series worthy of embracing. Expand

It's hard to tell with shows like this if the acting is bad or is it bad writing combined with bad directing. I think its a little of both, or maybe a lot of both. The writing for sure is true garbage. Unconnected drivel, plot lines started and dropped, unjustified character choices and arcs, UGH, just terrible. The whole finale was weird pseudo science speak with the character just saying sifi garbage dialog to try to make some kind of sense of a terrible plot line and some how try to justify what moronic story the writers hobbled together. Awful, awful, garbage. Not Star Trek , barely SiFi definitely terrible writing. I'M DONE. Expand

Despite minor shortcomings I had a great time watching and I look forward to season 3. Anson Mont as Pike was great and at the end of the day Discovery has all the action, philosophical undertones and awesome visuals that makes good science-fiction. Like every Trek Series the show took some time to find its stride. To you detractors I would say this: Star Trek is always like a SCI-FI Rorschach Test. It reflects your thoughts and gets you to dream and think. Some can only see a blob of ink, while others can see much, much more. Expand

And, I'm real glad to see much less of the typical and cheesy male macho'ism bravado in the show that made the whole Star Trek franchise so tiring and boring like screeching nails down a chalkboard. BattleStar Galactica was always a fresh breath of air! I grew up watching Star Trek since the Kirk days and after all the renditions to come out of the franchise, it made me realize how some women who divorce their husbands before the golden anniversaries get to talking about their Ex's as if their ex-husbands were top graduates of Valhalla Super Balls academy who dared invade Venus with bravado on steroids and bum rushed and laughed at by the Amazons, and all they wind up actually doing is break out in non-stop laughter while SMH'ing to themselves as if to say, wow, I can't believe I was married to THAT for all those years! What was I thinking! Discovery's first episode got a wow out of me because it looked GROWN UP and even rivals if not surpasses Star Wars latest. Like, wow, really? Not one F bomb cuss word with so many villains and really desperate situations? I even winced when Star Wars showed the older Luke when he was finally found on that island. Thought to myself, gosh, even his old age looks corny and cheesy as hell. Picard, now that guy's macho was so over the top, it was like, what's wrong with this country and their idea of "strength"? Real commanders in the military don't even act or talk like that in real life. Throwing an arm out to point at the screen and say something like, "Make it so" *gags* SO CHEESY AND CORNY. How did Picard even get a solo and not Janeway? However, I did like the older Picard, all the macho'ism subdued by old age, getting panned and rejected left and right. I actually felt sorry for him but admired how his character showed some honesty when he tried to navigate that ship for the first time. Wow, humility! Finally! Geezus. Quit trying to make Starship commanders act like they came out of BIONIC TESTICLE ACADEMY for once. Good lord. That's why I enjoyed BattleStar Galactica. You had a drunk Irish number 1, and a CO whose face reflected honesty about having got their rears handed to them by the Zylons. Like, after a decimation and calamity of that size, who the devil is gona come bursting onto the Bridge like Kirk or Picard? Even the female Star Buck ace pilot was drawn up just right. Why does my review flip-flop between these different franchises? BECAUSE! I'm not female or gay, but watching and catching up with all the different Star Trek episodes I missed from Picard and Janeway, I'd sometimes can feel the female loathing welling up from some kind of inner female as if I was married to these guys, ready to drown myself in hard liquor, scream into a pillow, and slit my throat from all the borrrrring super testicle macho from the main actors. Don't even get me started with Riker! Oh lordy lordy lordy. His macho accompanying Picard's, oh my gawt, it's like having used jockstrap slapping your face left and right. And the way Riker walked and his facial expressions on the bridge, it was if he had the sacred scrolls of ancient macho stuffed up his rear. If I was a woman, I'd be like, where's the knife, I'm ready to slit my throat. Thank you for the new Discovery. NOW, we have a bridge that looks as diverse as people in real life and not like what we have in the television version of US Government where they all look like "the founding fathers". Feigns shaking the knees. Like, they might as well wear the British colony funny white wigs from back then. Thank you for the new Discovery. I like it. The ships, the special effects, the characters, this is all grown up, progress. A step in the right direction. There's just only one complaint, a very minor one that I have about the script writing. Can you guys just once in a while CAN all the details about an anomaly? I"m like, jesus christ man, with all the information in the data banks from all the episodes from all the series, you can spare the audience the scientific details. Especially when there's just mere minutes to save another character. Why I like Discovery. I think one or two Commanders in one of the episodes alluded to it like, stfu already, I know what it is, just get the solution and the results dammit. And please, just please, do not ever do what Star Wars does and did, that when sh_t hits the fan, if I ever see anyone arguing the way Harrison Ford and Chewy and Leia and her brother did while getting shot at by all manner of lasers, that corny cheesy dialog is going to make me puke and hunt for Battlestar Galactica episodes and/or watch another rerun of Apocalypse Now just to watch a real and convincing firefight. NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY, in any real war time firefight argues about piddly stuff. They just shoot and blow up stuff! Expand

Something that beared no resemblance to any Trek before it. Well they succeeded, the problem is it has nothing to do with Star Trek. The formula of an ensemble cast seeking out new life and bolding going where no one has gone before is replaced by a dark dystopia where the entire universe revolves around one awful character. Kurtzman--the guy who directed the Mummy reboot and wrote the second Amazing Spiderman film is clueless to what made Star Trek great--Gene Roddenberry's vision. Expand

I just struggle to enjoy a season long storyline that isn't just the backdrop. Pike was a shining beacon of what the show really needs and that's colorful uniforms and a step away from all the dreary darkness. The best episodes were the ones that deviated away from the overall storyline for a single episode.

Season one showed how dislikable they were in season one and that didn't change. Even the one character that was likable managed to turn insufferable or at least annoying in season two. That's okay, because they brought on new characters that helped raise the cast as a whole, because I didn't instantly hate them and they did a lot of good things without being an annoyance.

I have hope for season 3, but I'm pretty low on this show as a whole. I thought season 2 would get better. Nope.
