iZombie provides a zombie-centric supernatural procedural with a sharp focus on the possibilities of that premise, while also paying homage to its comic roots.... iZombie is another win for The CW.
-
With witty writing, a likable leading lady, and a terrific cast, iZombie is full of life, and one of the season's best new shows.
-
With its deft mix of humor, heart and, well, brains, this new series could work for both the CW set and the CBS crowd.
-
A cheeky mash-up of police procedural, screwball comedy, and horror parody with lots of heart. And, yes, lots of brains.
-
iZombie is superbly cast and displays wit and surprises you don’t often find in the comics-to-TV genre.
-
Like “Mars,” part of iZombie’s appeal is the banter among the characters.
-
iZombie injects fresh life into the increasingly staid genre of supernatural TV. [20/27 Mar 2015, p.87]
-
iZombie is a delightfully ironic take on the horror genre. While as a police procedural it's far more Veronica Mars than Rookie Blues.
-
The show has a nice sense of detail and a comic puckishness that every zombie police procedural needs. At times genuinely scary in the way it's meant to be, it's also moving in the way it's meant to be.
-
Show creator Rob Thomas‘ touch on iZombie is a marriage of his tenacious super-sleuth “Veronica Mars” and his irrepressible love god “Cupid” (remember that 2009 Jeremy Piven gem?) with just the right mix of sleuthing and snogging.
-
A charming and even, yes, inspiring new series.
-
Liv is funny as well as charming, and the no-frills CW production keeps the focus on the characters and the stories. iZombie is dead-on.
-
A smart, sometimes bittersweet comic-book adaptation.
-
The show probably doesn’t need to resort to voice-overs as often as it does, but it’s generally pretty smart, witty and well acted, and not afraid to turn dark on occasion.
-
This show manages to give us the hilarious, horrific and heroic... and it has brains.
-
CW is just a little network trying to make some noise. It makes more headway with iZombie, a “cute” but never cloying show centered on brainy brain-eaters and their present-day dilemmas.
-
Despite the brain eating, producers have imbued the opening episodes with a sly sense of humor, a blend of sarcasm and bemusement, that McIver sells well.
-
Liv is more goth than zomb, more punk than spunk. She's also as appealing as anyone who eats human brains for a living could possibly be. Her supporting cast is good, too.
-
Occasionally gory and suffused with black humor, there’s still a sunny sincerity to the show. Simply put, iZombie is death done cute.
-
The series works. McIver is a great, unlikely heroine.... The show will have to make the weekly cases a bit more difficult to crack if they want to hold viewers' interest.
-
The crime solving sometimes seems perfunctory, and some of the characters feel purely functionary. But the series is still having a ton of fun throwing many ideas at the wall to see what sticks. That so much is sticking already is cause for anticipation of even better things to come.
-
The network scores again with the clever, entertaining enough iZombie.
-
The good news is that this show's building blocks are very strong. The dialogue, the world and the cast are all enjoyable, and the show simply exudes potential.
-
iZombie isn’t nearly must-see TV, as it breezes through formulaic murder plots. But it’s a friendly, easy-going hour, and one that will definitely not put you in the mood for chewy snacks.
-
A lot of the strong moments on the show resonated because of how much they reminded me of stronger moments on stronger shows.
-
As deadpan as it is high-concept, iZombie is genre-bending and beguiling hoot. [9-16 Mar 2015, p.13]
-
In many ways, iZombie echoes its noir predecessor, “Veronica Mars,” right down to the tiny (hoodied) protagonist who frequently provides wry narration. But the show loses some steam when Liv begins taking on the characteristics, and memories, of various victims of foul play on whom she’s dined.
-
While it doesn’t have much in common with its source material (in which the main character was part of a larger monster cosmology and ended up having to save the universe), iZombie seems to be building a distinctive little world of its own.
-
The show is moderately entertaining, mostly because of the appeal of the three leads.
-
Its constant narration and not-very-suspenseful murder of the week, iZombie feels like just another way to do a youth-oriented copshow, even if it’s garnished with flourishes like comicbook captions.
