This was for the premiere episode. Brilliantly directed, glamorously performed, and with one hell of twists, The premiere episode of Season 2 kicks off stupendously...Hope this keeps up throughout the season

It's the season of mistrust. Constantly shifting allegiances, hidden agendas, and betrayals are around every corner. Things only get crazier the further the season progresses. We get huge reveals into characters pasts that we just don't see coming and everybody is screwing somebody (both literally and figuratively). Things only get crazier the further the season progresses. If you're looking for drama, suspense, and tension then HTGAWM still delivers and even more so than the first season did.

Yes, things even bigger and crazier. However no matter how big the scope of the events get, the show is able to ensure that the viewers are able to keep everything straight. That's just darn good writing.

That being said season 2 isn't without it's issues. In order to keep the tension high and the pace going, the show resorts to tactics that are just frustrating for the viewer. It's not hard to see early on that these characters would all be able to trust each other if they would just talk to each other once in a while. There's a lot of tension between Annalise and her students this season, and she would just clue them in once in a while a lot of problems could have been avoided.

Of course it would also help if her students would stop being such idiots. Wes, Laurel, Connor, and Michaela are so self-absorbed, selfish, and quite frankly idiotic that they all each become completely unlikable, at least in this reviewer's opinion. Given that they are such an integral part of the show, it's a pain to see so much time dedicated to their unappreciative and clueless behavior. All they do is blame Annalise for everything, seemingly forgetting that most of the trouble their in is their fault in the first place, and proceed to make things much worse for themselves and everyone else all the while continuing to blame Annalise.

While the series signature group is rendered unlikable, the drama doesn't falter too much surprisingly. That's because it has other characters to make up for it. Side-characters like Asher, Bonnie, and Frank are expanded upon in meaningful ways and given larger roles. The star of the show though is still Viola Davis as Annalise Keating. She plays this wonderfully layered, flawed, brilliant, and guilt-ridden character with unbelievable talent. The shear range of emotion Davis is capable in her acting is astounding. Each moment with Keating is powerful and each reveal is incredible.

It also helps that the core plot and surrounding side-cases are good as well. Occasionally the show uses it's stories to push certain political and social agendas with all the subtlety of the atomic bomb, but in the end the strong writing for the actual cases and drama won me over yet again.

Season 2 is not without it's frustrations and flaws. Despite a much larger scale this season just isn't able to live up to the first. Yet, when it comes down to it this is still some excellent drama brought to life by (mostly) excellent characters and performances. The mystery, drama, and intrigue are still all on point. If you loved the first season like I did, season 2 will still keep you hooked.

HTGAWM is one of the best new shows last year. I'm glad that they decided to keep it with 15 episodes for second season. The premier episode used the same formula as they did for the pilot with even bigger surprises. The acting, writing, and directing are still strong with more character development which is good.

The show has greatly improved over the first season, as far as the performance of the secondary actors the soundtrack, Viola is still fantastic, they managed to tie up several loose ends and the final episodes were very good, but the series still suffers because of its conveniences, some weekly cases are solved simply.

This season is better than the first with stronger writing. The whole cast continues to give stupendous performances but Viola Davis shines the most.

Murder has no basis in the reality of the legal system, and just like Scandal, there are probably two too many characters to have to care about. But it manages to continuously elevate the dramatic stakes and navigate the ever-evolving relationships of its principals while rarely allowing itself to become narratively untethered.
