Honestly, I would have given most seasons of Community a 10, and even the odd season with Harmon was still charming in its own way, considering how close the characters had grown and the obvious chemistry between the actors.

But this feels different, somehow. Disjointed I think is the right word. It reminds me of the growing pains that a comedy goes through in the first season, without any of the energy. And this is coming from somebody who absolutely loves this show. I'm willing to put up with every ounce of craziness Community has to offer, but the lack of energy and confidence is concerning. I hope Community ends up as good as it was even last season, but losing Troy in particular really hurts. Troy and Abed could carry a whole season in the way that few television characters can. Without that dynamic, and with the show still searching for what it's really going to be now, it just makes for an awkward viewing experience. Usually the great thing about shows you love is that you don't have to see the growing pains anymore. I think of shows like New Girl or Workaholics, and it doesn't matter what the characters are doing or whether the plots are idiotic, you just like watching the characters be themselves. Community used to feel like that, but it doesn't anymore, and that's the difference.

That said, I'm responding to the first two episodes of the season, and there's plenty of room for improvement. I'll definitely keep watching just to see how everything plays out. It takes more than a couple bad episodes to give up on a show like this.

Watched the first two and they both felt really flat.

The frisbees on the roof was funny and there were a few good jokes but it feels a little off. Hopefully it will pick up.

Honestly I was pretty disappointed with the final season of Community. Overall it seemed to placate to what worked in previous seasons but then each episode seemed to lazily fizzle out. Adding new actors Paget Brewster and Keith David really could have enhanced what was lacking in the previous two seasons, however their characters were underdeveloped and quite boring. It still feels, moves, and thinks like the Community you know. It has changed, yet it hasn’t. Its essence remains.

While the first episode is comfortingly familiar to Community obsessives, the second one feels weirdly off.

It feels familiar and fresh, with myriad possibilities in front of it thanks to smart new cast additions and a renewed focus on those characters over just getting lost in the creatively inane.
