  1. "Inspired by a true story" it may be, but inspired it's not.
  2. Essentially approaches its subject seriously, but does take stabs both at horror and grotesque comedy, neither with much success.
  3. Like "Waiting to Exhale" except more so, film jerks from scene to scene with little sense of rhythm, continuity or dramatic shaping.

Camp is too elegant a word to describe it all.
  4. Think of Against the Ropes as a "Rocky" story -- if, that is, the vintage is somewhere between "Rocky IV" and "V," and the action centered around the Burgess Meredith character as played by Meg Ryan wearing "Barbarella" outfits.
  5. The lure of Halle Berry as the leather-clad feline should help this mangy misfire claw out a decent opening before a quick slink to DVD.
  6. OK entertainment but nothing more.
  7. The latest and most calculated re-do on the formulaic fantasy of an innocent conquering Gotham.
  8. Pic maintains a likable, breezy tone throughout but looks increasingly threadbare of real inspiration or originality as it proceeds.
  9. A disappointingly mild re-creation of true events.
  10. Valiant attempt to create a modern fairytale ends up being frustratingly creepy instead of haunting and memorable.
  11. An appealing female cast gives the hollowly formulaic Mona Lisa Smile more dignity than it perhaps deserves, yet it's Julia Roberts in an ill-suited starring role that represents one of the film's chief shortcomings.

Hamill is not enough of a dramatic actor to carry the plot load here, especially when his partner in so many scenes is really little more than an oversized gas pump, even if splendidly voiced by James Earl Jones.
  12. Lacks the consistent tone, pace and point of view for either a science fiction thriller or medieval war adventure.
  13. Revives the format but not the fun of classic Hollywood screwball comedies about rediscovering the virtues of a former mate.
  14. Breaks down when it gets to the distant future, which in this case isn't a good place to be stranded.
  15. A one-joke affair about conjoined twins that feels like it bypassed the scripting stage and was filmed directly from the pitch, the comedy remains resoundingly unfunny.
  16. Harmless tale of the giant pooch helping out some itinerant performing animals while longing for home will go down smoothly with the preschool faithful, but anyone over 5 will feel antsy even given the brief running time.
  17. Uninspired star turns from Ben Affleck and Uma Thurman suggest something less than full belief in this quickly forgettable thriller.
  18. A lot of talent on both sides of the camera operating in low gear.
  19. Will serve as an excellent gauge of any viewer's tolerance level for schmaltzy contrivance and manipulation.
  20. Striking visuals help, but pic won't make the final cut with either genre fans, who've seen it all and better before, or the arthouse crowd, who will sneer at pic's cliches.
  21. A curiously bland drama that fails to fulfill the promise of its early scenes.
  22. This obsessive love story about a guy seeking closure after being dumped by his Latino boyfriend awkwardly juggles screwball and noir elements with macabre black comedy in a mix that calls for a far lighter, more stylish touch than the obvious one at work here.
  23. High on charm but extremely low on content, Blue Gate Crossing is a half-hour short stretched to feature length.
  24. A plodding and familiar "cop sees what the killer sees" riff that plays like a poorly inflated "The X-Files" episode.
  25. Only partially succeeds in interweaving questions of family loyalty with historical memory and the fate of Italian Jews in WW2.

Enjoyable in an undemanding way, and with a few interesting flourishes.
  26. A very vulgar pro-faith comedy rather than a sacrilegious goof, Dogma is an extraordinarily uneven film.
  27. Suffers from the same rancid dialogue and acting problems as the original but with a much funnier pulse. The real progenitor here is less the previous pic than the sick-funny horror cinema of George Romero.
