Cairn is as perfect an experience as one could possibly hope to produce. It doesn’t mean the game is perfect or flawless, but it reached for something beyond what other games reach for and achieved more than others have achieved. It had a vision and a strength. It had a voice. It went places confidently, assuredly and correctly, and it got there in a way that very few could have pulled off. So it’s a ten out of ten — I just don’t think you can do better than this.

At the end of the day, my only complaint about Discounty is that I wanted more of it, and that’s probably the best problem you could possibly have. It was great from start to finish and I wanted more, but it does what it does well — it gets in, it gets out, and it’s a great example of of how to deliver a measured experience.

Overall, Lies of P: Overture delivers a lot of value. Great story, great gameplay, lots of new weapons to play with and it was a good length, too. Ultimately, I felt very satisfied by the time I finished it.

The script is terrible, the twists were predictably dumb, and the humanity isn’t present. The performances aren’t good, and none of the story works for me on any level. In terms of mechanics, the traversal that made it stand out for me before is not interesting this time around. It was all too easy, too fast and too simple.

There’s a lot of potential here with fun weapons and a good concept, but the solid supporting elements needed for any good roguelike just aren’t here. There are a lot of obvious holes that could be filled — better meta progression, customizable controls — that would make the overall package so much better.

Once you unlock a few things and understand how it’s working and what it’s doing, it’s clear to see that the developers get it. They fully understand what the fun part of this formula is and they’ve dialed in on that fun. Even though it’s not pushing the most pixels and it’s not the deepest thing around, what they’ve made here absolutely works and it’s fun as hell.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is absolutely, without doubt, a notable title, and probably going to be one of the ten best of the year, even though I do have some issues with it. Overall, it’s something to be studied and learned from, and it’s got a lot to teach the rest of the industry.

This is absolutely a surprise hit for me. I had a wonderful time. I would definitely recommend it to anybody who wants something really quirky, super Japanese, super weird, a little bit of open world stuff in there.

I never want to be the “it just gets good later” kind of guy, but in this case it really is true — for a good monster hunting experience, it doesn’t heat up until 15 hours in.

For fans of visual novels, they just don’t come better than this, so Stories from Sol: the Gun-Dog gets top marks from me.

This is an excellent tactics game that’s absolutely going to be on my top ten of the year. It’s a bit of a sleeper but don’t let it pass you by.

I love this game. It was so great. And I loved especially that they got in, told the story, got out, did what they needed to do really effective with their time. Like surgical.

I had a wonderful time with Goodbye, Volcano High. It’s an amazing experience that could only be had in the medium of videogames.

Black Skylands offers a clear vision and clear mechanics in support of that vision. There’s nothing here that doesn’t make any sense or feels like extra fluff. It was just all really polished and focused and streamlined and on point. And I just had a wonderful, wonderful experience with it.

Starfield is a pretty good time. It’s basically Fallout 4 in space with some sci-fi and some procedural generation.

Shadow Gambit: the Cursed Crew is a masterpiece — it’s just so good. The story is great, the characters are great, I love the choice and new approach to design, I love the incorporation of the meta elements of the saving into the storyline, your ship the Red Marley… I love everything about this.

In a genre where it’s easy to feel like you’re watching clips that are awkwardly stitched together when done poorly, Ten Dates feels like playing a regular game with a regular story — all the clips come together and make it feel like one continuous, smooth experience that flows with your choices.

It’s always going to be on my desktop or my PlayStation, and I’m gonna keep going back to it every once in a while because it’s really relaxing to hold down the parkour button and go through this huge world to unlock stuff and find new quests.

It’s a struggle to encapsulate what a wonderful, marvelous experience this is, and how carefully the developers have addressed all of the concerns from the past — and those concerns weren’t huge! Despite doing a great job the first time out, they rolled up their sleeves, take a look at what didn’t work perfectly and now everything here is just so, so good.

There are a lot of great ideas here, and what you go through in the adventure is just awesome. But without spoiling, Stray is really just about just the beautiful, intuitive experience of being a cat.

I love all the little side quests and I love learning about Chinese culture and mythology. Like that’s a huge reason. That’s great. I love it. Yeah, and I think that this game…it was an eye-opening experience, as well as just, I really, really fell into it and kind of like, let it wash over me.
