A masterpiece on any system, Shadow Gambit The Cursed Crew is a high-performance wave-slicing ghost ship on PlayStation 5. Making lovely use of the Dualsense and optimising controls for console, you’ve got the absolute best version of pirate stealthing on your massive living room telly box.

If you’re a fan of stealth or strategy games, you really should consider Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew a must-play. This is Mimimi Games at its finest, building on the mechanics it finely tuned in Shadow Tactics and Desperados III while also adding more elements, more freedom and more fun. You’ll quickly come to love this band of unusual pirates, and what each of them offers when out in the field. So much so that you might even be tempted to replay missions just to approach things from a different angle.

Shadow Gambit: the Cursed Crew is a masterpiece — it’s just so good. The story is great, the characters are great, I love the choice and new approach to design, I love the incorporation of the meta elements of the saving into the storyline, your ship the Red Marley… I love everything about this.

Shadow Gambit offers a lot to be happy about. Elaborate levels with lots of possibilities to sculpt your own solution, and wildly different characters to do it with. The game has many quality of life improvements missing from earlier real-time tactical sneak-em up games. This, combined with a very decent price point makes this one of the best starters of a very busy autumn season.

The definitive example of the stealth strategy game and a worthy swansong for developer Mimimi Games, as they deliver a charming and surprisingly accessible pirate swashbuckler.

With a wonderful understanding of player choice, and packed full of things you’ll want to explore, Shadow Gambit is a treasure indeed. Just don’t forget to save! [Issue#31, p.78]

With mildly eldritch themes, eccentric characters and tongue-in-cheek humour reminiscent of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew has a little something for every type of player. It's not perfect, but Shadow Gambit is just plain fun, and if it can convince a gung-ho, guns blazing player like me to give patience a stealth a go, I think a lot of other gamers out there would do well to dip their toes into these waters.

I have been loving this. Stealty, strategy with cursed pirates? Yes please. It's like all the best bits from Batman (the takedown of goons)I have been loving this. Stealty, strategy with cursed pirates? Yes please. It's like all the best bits from Batman (the takedown of goons) mixed with Pirates of the Caribbean and Dishonored. It can be hard but the first levels guide you through the complexity with admirably elegant tutorials and tips along the way. Further to this , even if you mess up really badly, you can go back and re-do a level and feel like a boss.

Music keeps you in the mood and the satisfaction of clearing a complex level is difficult to commuicate. Controls are precise and easy to master and my only caveat is that the camera can be a bit tricky to control and get the right angle.

Overall, this is a real hidden gem of a game that shows more originality in it's gameplay and mechanics than most games from triple A studios.
