HAUNTED: Halloween ‘86 is a follow-up to a technically revolutionary concept made real, and unlike many daunting modern titles, it actually pays off in what it’s trying to accomplish. Considering that it’s made within the technical confines of the NES while retaining modern gaming sensibilities, it’s hard not to recommend this charming beat ’em up. I can even overlook the dismal concept of candy corn restoring health.

Kevin Smith built a career on fan service, and Jay and Silent Bob: Mall Brawl is as fan service-y as it gets. On its face, it’s a typical arcade beat-’em-up, but with a shiny View Askew coat of paint. If you’re looking for a solid brawler that harkens to the NES days or you’re an aficionado of Smith’s filmography, it’s easy to recommend this charming title.

As a grid-based, first-person, action/adventure RPG, Vaporum: Lockdown offers plenty of gameplay elements to keep you busy. The dungeon-crawling game play is straightforward and not overly complicated, despite a good number of puzzles sprinkled in. In short, this is a solid prequel to the original Vaporum. Have fun exploring.

Vesper: Zero Light Edition might’ve needed to stay in the oven a bit longer, but there’s still a decent game here for puzzle platformer fans. The heaviness of the time-based stuff combined with fiddly Switch controls and your slow-moving android eventually takes a toll. But when the puzzle mechanic works unencumbered, it’s clever and satisfying, and the audio/visual package goes a long way. With better balancing, Cordens Interactive should have a hit with their next release.

Panic Porcupine is a fast-paced Sonic and Meat Boy mashup/clone with a fun, vintage feel. Are you looking for a relaxing game? You’ve come to the wrong place; Panic Porcupine is hard. If the idea of a future with cyborgs and robots battling each other interests you, and you don’t mind a bit of a learning curve, then Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus is probably for you. There were times where battles felt long and drawn out and even a bit slow. A few times, battles felt overwhelmingly difficult. That said, if destruction isn’t your playstyle, this may not be the game for you. But if you are into any action or open-world games, I’d highly suggest taking a look at this port. In its own right, Nintendo Switch Sports is fantastic, doing everything you hoped it would. Super-responsive controls, family-friendly fun, and a solid online and offline co-op system. However, when you look at what we could have got, and when you compare this to Wii Sports, has the game built on that foundation enough in the last 16 years? I don’t think it does. Again, it’s a great game and one that I will sink many hours into because it’s essentially Wii Sports on the Switch – but when you look at the bigger picture, there is endless potential on what Nintendo could, and probably should, have done. Golf has been confirmed, and I hope that there is more on Spocco Square’s horizon, as, with a few more sports and features, Nintendo Switch Sports could become THE must-own game on the system.

The strength of Silt is in the atmosphere it creates. The art and the sound provide a horror-like vibe to this adventure puzzle game. And both of those aspects will pull you into the weird and mysterious world that Silt creates. The game doesn’t hold your hand in any of the puzzles. Not really. The change in perspective from its original release ruins the experience. It was far more tense, and ultimately enjoyable, when I was not in direct control of the main character. While I’m certainly hoping to see further Neo Geo Pocket Color games eventually come to the Nintendo Switch, maybe pick from a different genre for the next release. KING OF FIGHTERS R-2 is still decent for what it is, but only big fans of 2D fighters need to experience it on the Switch.

Blue Fire, albeit flawed, is a very enjoyable and satisfying platforming experience. It may not reach the heights of some of the games that inspired it, but that doesn’t stop it from being an incredibly enjoyable game that has plenty to offer.

Knockout Home Fitness is a Switch exclusive competing with the Fitness Boxing series and the expanding number of Switch workout games. I always welcome additional choices, and it manages to hold its own, more or less. But the price might be high for the content of a title that never aims to be anything more than “good enough.” Weigh the pros and cons and check out the demo to decide if you want to “Knock out inactivity” with this one.

Dig Dog is a pleasing game. The gameplay is quick but fun and increasingly challenging. This is a mindless game to play when you’re looking for something relaxing or don’t want to commit to a heavy story.

Spellbreak is the battle royale-styled action-adventure title that magic wielders have been waiting for! Its vibrant and beautiful landscapes make the world feel like something out of Breath of the Wild, and the unique classes and abilities make each hard to pick a favorite.

The Nintendo Switch eShop is rife with countless “pick up and play” games, and would you know it, most of them aren’t very good. Plenty more are cheap knockoffs of better games. Mom Hid My Game 2 is chock full of something few games have anymore: surprises. If you’re looking for a new and unique puzzle experience, My Mom Hid My Game 2 is a fun little time sink.

RPGolf Legends can be good fun, but it’s also heavily flawed at present. With more focus on golf and dungeon puzzles and less on awful combat, this game would be an easy recommendation. But the fusion is bizarrely out of whack, and the game needs more polish.

Fans of the original will love this updated classic and all of its new features. For those looking for a difficult but fun challenge that includes numerous single and multiplayer game modes, I highly recommend checking out Spelunker HD Deluxe.

Overall, Run The Fan is an interesting approach to puzzle solving, but isn’t completely rounded out with its’ features. That said, it is definitely worth a look if you are in the market for another inexpensive puzzle-game.

Both games included fun graphics and pixelated characters. The music was fun, and the voice acting was excellent. However, they needed more variety in the gameplay.

3000th Duel is a great play through and truly a hidden gem on the Switch. The more time I put into it, the more I enjoyed it. Despite my one small complaint, I enjoyed seeing what I would discover next. Metroidvania fans should certainly give this game a playthrough.

Pronty is a fun underwater metroidvania, with a sprawling map sprinkled with fun yet unforgiving bosses and a unique combat system. Its story is simple, but has a clear environmental message that resonates without being laid on too thick.

Miitopia surpassed my expectations! There’s a surprising amount of content here, given the initial appearance and cutesy graphics. If you prefer the light-hearted side of RPGs, there’s a lot of fun to be had, with a lengthy game on offer. And it is loads of fun creating Miis of your family and friends (or teddies and pets) along the way.
