Nintendo has brilliantly postponed the problem of creating the successor of Mario Kart 8: this Deluxe edition is the best entry in the series, and Switch's versatility glorifies the multiplayer modes.

Dragon Quest XI S - Definitive Edition is a porting from Switch that trades a slight visual downgrade for a rich amount of added content.

Judging UFO 50 is a challenge, even just for the sheer amount of content it contains, with an incredible array of ideas, mechanics, and concepts that you’ll find within this alternate universe. Through its video games, UFO 50 narrates a historical moment, an era that never actually existed but lives within our memories, sensations, and the emotions we felt as children, back when this world was still unexplored. At the same time, it requires a certain devotion, a passion for a very specific kind of retro gaming and a lot of patience to explore.

Reckless Racing 2 is a major improvement over the first episode, with a welcome structure that glues together the single races in a effective, even if not original way. A must-buy for arcade racing fans.

Street Fighter is back and this time it's really SUPER. More fighters, better graphics and gameplay. This is one to go for Beat'em up fans.

Against the Storm is one of those titles capable of setting a standard, demonstrating how well-implemented design ideas can make a difference.

A simple but solid franchise as Dark Nebula could only give birth to a high-quality sequel, but frankly we didn't expect so many new ideas. The graphics of the game, already excellent, have been further improved and now offer levels rich in details, well defined and unique. Episode Two is immediate and entertaining as Episode One, the tilt controls are very accurate and the action is characterized by a continuous introduction of new challenges to overcome. A must buy.

This is a wonderful game if you're going to play it in stealth mode and use all the time you need to plan your assassination. And you have to do it in that way!

Overwatch is a funny, colorful and fast-paced class shooter made unique by a really huge roster of very distinct characters. There's room for improvement but we got a pretty good flying start.

Bayonetta 2's only "flaw" is the very similar gameplay compared to the first chapter, but it's still a wonderful and engaging action game with tons of extras, replayability, online co-op and inspired graphics. Definitely one of the best games one can buy on Nintendo Wii U.

Beat Hazard Ultra is a very nice twin analog shooter, packed with spectacular light effects and a solid gameplay.

FIFA 10 is the capitalization of several years of polishing, both in visual and in gameplay. A true soccer sim, various and well devised, EA Canada made a brilliant game, maybe hard to master through the first days, but very enjoyable in every of its aspects.

Planet Quest is just perfect in its simplicity and joyful silliness, offering an energetic musical experience that starts with a tap of your finger and ends with a drum of your foot.

Assassin's Creed II is not only a welcomed tribute to Italy, but also a videogame that has improved almost everything from the previous game. Graphically beautiful, with a great story, a lot of things to do and some cool ideas (like Auditore's Mansion), the last game from Ubisoft is finally a compelling game, that everyone should at least give a try. Obviously there are many things that still need to be improved, like AI and combat system, but as far as we can tell, the game is a must buy even for his gameplay, apart from the surroundings.

Dragon Quest XI is excellent through and through. It's fun and engaging, it's simple yet deep, it tells an intriguing story. It looks wonderful on Switch, sounds even better with the new synphonic soundtrack and tackles even more content than before.

Simply, the best arcade racing on the market. For content, gameplay and graphics.

Though the controls are a little hard to get used to, Space Miner: Space Ore Bust delivers an awesome gameplay, lots of missions and upgrades, all held together by a funny plot. A very nice experience.

Auro is a complex puzzler with a steep learning curve, which is good for the most hardcore gamers, but not so much for all the others.

Dandy Dungeon is much more than a simple roguelike with a retro style: it's a sort of japanese parodistic comedy about life, work, love and the RPG genre, inside an amusing roguelike.

The work done by Bluepoint Games for Shadow of the Colossus shows their skills and awareness. The remake is surprising and offers a lot of graphic customization, proving to be beautiful to see. The game is full of gorgeous graphic effects and runs at high performance, loosing a little bit the charm of the original title, which remains unchanged in its story and game content.

Killzone 2 is truly a tour de force from a technical point of view, but also a game with solid gameplay. Its strengths live in variety and high involvement for the players, even with a cover system that needs some improvements. The Multiplayer side is equally strong (even more), so any PlayStation 3 owner should at least consider buying it.

Halo: Reach is the Bungie's last goodbye to a saga that mostly made what Xbox 360 and Xbox Live are right now. And it's a lot of the things every Halo fan could have hoped for. It won't be easy for the new team to pick up Master Chief from where Bungie left him.

XCOM on iOS plays good and looks decent enough to be keep most of his quality intact; but at 17,99€ it could be recommended really only to the ones who can't play it elsewhere or are totally addicted to the touch screen.

Forza Motorsport 4 may be an evolution from its third installment, but Turn 10 managed to make almost everything better from its previous efforts. It could be more challenging and rain is still missing, but all in all this is one of the finest racing games ever.

Split Fiction continues Hazelight Studios's tradition of making high-quality, fully cooperative video games. The merits are many: there is certainly a beautiful message of meeting between the two protagonists, but the fun comes above all from an always fast pace, from the ability to alternate mechanics, visual solutions, ideas and quotes with extreme taste. It probably doesn't succeed in the ambitious attempt to do better than its predecessor, It Takes Two, due to some not so perfect rhythms and, in general, a less strong aesthetic, but it still flies close to the sun, and is another step towards the perfect cooperative experience. Furthermore, it is impossible not to take your hat off to the Friend's Pass, made even more universal in this new iteration.

Street Fighter IV is the beat'em'up we've been anticipating for ages. It's the perfect synthesis of innovation and classicism, of deep mechanics and easy play. Fun and challenging, the game has stunning visuals, but to enjoy this masterpiece an arcade stick is absolutely recommended.

Perhaps it doesn't add anything new to the gameplay of the previous chapters, but Gears of Wars 3 is simply the perfect conclusion of an epic saga.

EDGE Extended is a great new episode in Mobigame's puzzle platform series, improving the original with tons of new levels, better graphics and a couple of little surprises in terms of gameplay and puzzle design.

Gorogoa is a stunning work of art and an unique videogame that shouldn't be missed.

Probably this is the best Resident Evil remake in every aspect, technical component too.

Badland 2 doesn't stand too far from the original, but with improved mechanics and fantastic visuals and sound this is one of the best examples of mobile gaming done right.

It's really difficult to describe in a few words what Dragon Age: Origins means for the RPG genre. It's role-playing at its roots, with an incredible story arc, deep gameplay and an atmosphere no other game can deliver. You'll hope the game will last forever. There are really few problems in the gameplay but we can say without any doubt that Origins is the RPG of the year and, perhaps, of the last few years.

A brave and absolutely brilliant take on RPGs, that despite its many inspirations manages to stay brilliantly unique. One of the most exceptional surprises if the year, and a must play for anybody who loves this complex genre or good writing.

A wonderful new take on the classic formula of the series that manages to deliver a familiar but at the same time fresh experience.

The job done by Sam Barlow is very fascinating and extremely well done but it didn't fully convince us from a plot perspective and for a gameplay too light.

Nier: Automata GOTY is the last and best way to play and live one of the most important games over the last ten years.

Finally, From Software manages to create a game on its own and not a lazy port. Dark Souls II is exactly the best way to play the masterpiece console gamers experienced a few weeks ago.

Resident Evil 2 is an excellent remake, faithful to the original game but with a modern twist in terms of graphics and gameplay.

If Super Mario Odyssey were a music album, it would be a top-tier Art Pop record. Donkey Kong Bananza, on the other hand, leans more towards baroque Progressive Rock. The game starts off slowly, but it's a continuous crescendo leading to a masterful finale, with unique, deep, and often brilliant mechanics. It's one of the best 3D platformers ever made - deeply respectful of the character's past, yet entirely forward-looking.

Spelunky 2 is an outstanding sequel. It doesn't reinvent the formula but its small innovations are more than enough to give this sequel its own life.

A game crafted by a team that has built a strong and proactive relationship with its userbase. This connection, among other things, has helped Satisfactory become the amazing game it is today. Now almost bug-free, with stunning graphics and a complete storyline, Coffee Stain’s game lives up to the early access hype and managed to go beyond all expectations.

After 5 years, Flower is still a fantastic experience even on PlayStation 4 and PSVita.

Balatro is a poker-inspired roguelite that we cannot but recommend to lovers of the genre. Dense with content and challenges to complete, it has a dynamic gameplay, more strategic than you might think for a game also based on luck, and an aesthetically pleasing, if somewhat repetitive. Occasionally bad luck gets the better of you and you have to accept that, but it will make you want to play one more game.

The Room Three is another great entry for a series that keeps moving forward in a convincing way.

Another year, another masterpiece. Visual Concepts have improved everything from 2K11 and today NBA 2K12 is the best basketball game ever. The game have top NBA stars performing like their real life counterparts based on distinct character types, a great gameplay with a strong AI and playing the games is very fun.

New Horizons is the crown jewel in the beloved Animal Crossing franchise: Nintendo managed to surpass every expectation by refining the gameplay with a plethora of features which improve visuals, quality of life and customization.

Bug Heroes 2 comes with lots of different characters to unlock, three rich single player modes, online multiplayer and some very nice graphics and controls.

Shadowbringers is not just a fun and juicy MMORPG thanks to some intuitive design choices and amazing dungeons and encounters, but also a different take on the overindulged "hero saves the world" story with lots of twists and turns.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is excellent but it's still the same kind of content we have played over and over. Players should not expect revolutionary ways to play the game, Blizzard knows well if ain't broken don't fix it and they managed to deliver once again a huge amount of highly designed content which will keep any kind of player busy in the months - if not years - to come. That said, there's not much to add: Cataclysm is the exact reason why World of Warcraft numbers ten millions accounts while other MMORPGs do not.

FIFA 12 is the definitive soccer simulation. EA managed to improve the last year edition by not only adding small fixes and new rosters but putting a new impact engine, new modes and a lot of cool stuff asked by users.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is, quite simply, a video game that shouldn’t exist. No publisher on Earth would ever fund the production of a colossal two-dimensional Metroidvania over the span of seven years, and no independent developer could realistically afford to turn such an immense ambition into reality. And yet, Hollow Knight: Silksong does exist, and it exists solely because a group of creators - deeply in love with their own work but above all blessed with extraordinary talent and the resources to make it shine - chose to invest seven years of their lives in the project. There has never been a Metroidvania so vast in content and so profound in its systems, nor one that marries such sheer scale with such painstaking artistry. On one hand, it is an experience of staggering proportions; on the other, it is enriched with the kind of craft and care one usually finds only in artisanal workshops. In the industry, it’s often said that this genre carries a fragment of the medium’s very soul. Playing through Hornet’s adventure is a reminder, plain and simple, of how beautiful it is to experience a video game made with love.

Devoid of traditional jumpscare but decidedly abundant from the point of view of graphic horror, Slay the Princess does not hesitate to bring into play all the tools of the craft of a good writer: eye-catching, brutal, mesmerizing and sometimes dismissive, but always able to recover on the hook, the writing of Black Tabby Games is one of the best we could appreciate in the gaming world in this 2023.

Bowser's Inside Story is an awesome addition to a lovely franchise which never disappointed. It is fresh and full of neat ideas and situations and Bowser is finally the main character again after 13 years, last time being Legend of Seven Stars on SNES. The perfect gameplay balance further improves a jewel of game design to the point that the average length of the adventure, about 20 hours without playing through additional contents, is the only letdown in this excellent installment of the Mario & Luigi series. Must buy, period.

Trials Evolution takes what was great in Trials HD, and expands it in every conceivable way; a wonderful, frustrating, exhilarating, engrossing game that everyone with some gaming skills should at least try.

Rockstar scores again, crafting an expansion that feels more like a full priced retail game, than typical Downloadable Content. Lost and Damned is darker, more mature and hopeless than Niko Bellic's previous adventures, and if you liked GTA IV, this pack is worth every single cent.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is still the very same Insomniac game you may have fallen in love with in the past years, just improved in almost every way.

Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus is an excellent FPS, with nice and accurate controls. The single player campaign is short but pretty intense, while the four online multiplayer modes offer hours and hours of entertainment thanks to the ranking system. Packed with some of the best graphics ever seen on an iPhone, this game definitely rocks. Don't miss it.

Sorcery! 3 keeps on delivering some strong storytelling and a fascinating modern take on the old gamebooks we used to love.

It might not be the most amazing technical showcase for the new consoles, but still Rayman Legends is a marvelous game and the best 2D platformer out there.

Animal Well is an atypical and irreverent metroidvania that makes a point to overturn the most trite conventions of a genre giving more and more often signs of fatigue. It's impossible to stop at the credits: at each screen you want to push the darkness a little further, gradually revealing a world that can be gentle and ruthless at the same time. Never unjust, Animal Well rewards the spirit of observation and critical ability, constantly putting lateral thinking and the natural curiosity of human beings into play.

The award masterpiece of Platinum Games arrives on Xbox One: the story is captivating, the world is alive and evolving, the combat is engaging and the soundtrack is simply amazing.

The PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth adopts some bizarre solutions regarding the graphics settings and certain options are still missing, but in terms of performance the game already appears very well optimized and potentially scalable on different types of configurations...Of course, beyond the purely technical aspects there is the great substance of an adventure that will certainly be able to involve you for dozens and dozens of hours, thanks to an almost always brilliant narrative section, an even more exciting hybrid combat system and the charm of an open world full of things to do and see.
