Every single song in this album is REALLY GOOD. I love the lyrics and the production of all of them. But the only thing that i didn't liked was: This isn't cohesive. Songs didn't fit together. But, all of them are really amazing! One of the best albums of 2020. Katy is proving she keeps getting bigger in art.

Smile is Katy's most consistent album. There are higher highs on Prism and Teenage Dream, but there is not anything on Smile as low as the lows on the latter either. You can tell Katy picked the best 12 of the ~20 songs she wrote over the past 2 years, leaving little fluff (something Witness suffered from). For the first time in her discography, the track-listing is perfect as the songsSmile is Katy's most consistent album. There are higher highs on Prism and Teenage Dream, but there is not anything on Smile as low as the lows on the latter either. You can tell Katy picked the best 12 of the ~20 songs she wrote over the past 2 years, leaving little fluff (something Witness suffered from). For the first time in her discography, the track-listing is perfect as the songs fit a story arc beginning with brokenness, depression, and drunken nights to suppress emotions and ends with love, redemption, and a new appreciation for life.
Most of the songs on Smile land just under the 3-minute mark, making this her shortest album. However, none of the songs besides the title track (due to a last minute pull out of Diddy) feel incomplete. All the songs are very much Katy as well, exemplifying her wit and quirk in lyrics without ever dipping too much into the cringe and cheese her past work tended to. The only real misfire is the line about eye crust but it is easy to look past after you remember the 20 lines on Witness that were much weirder. I would argue that Smile is her best written album along with her debut, but One of the Boys might just edge it out a little with the self-written Thinking of You alone.
Although the title track is one of the weaker songs on the album, the prechorus “But every tear has been a lesson / Rejection can be God’s protection / Long hard road to get that redemption / but no shortcuts to a blessing” are some of the best lines in her catalog, demonstrating growth and maturity and sum up the premise of the whole album.
Overall, Smile is a great solid pop album that stays relatively upbeat and dance-y throughout. The fillers are slim to none and the best tracks (Cry About It Later, Not The End Of The World, Only Love, and Tucked) are already creeping up as some of the best in her discography; Never Really Over has been there for a while now. The vocals and instrumentations are tightly and finely produced, making it an enjoyable listen that never makes you go “what?!” Critics have been too harsh on Katy, although it was too be expected looking at their opinions on the rest of her albums. Certainly, Smile shows a lot more personality, variety, and musical evolution than some other more acclaimed albums from 2020.

The only problem here is that she dropped a LOT of songs before the album came out, and it seemed a little confuse... but the album itself is dancing, funny, well-made, sentimental and it's everything that we could've ask when it cames to Katy Perry.

    2. "Cry About It Later"
To me this is a song about hooking up and I'm here for it. The instrumentals, the lyrics, her tones to her voice fit very well. It makes me feel sexy and not guilty about the thoughts I have with hookup culture. Sometimes we all need to just have a little fun and that's okay (if it's safe) and this song is a great way to express that vibe/feeling. I love it. ALSO THE GUITAR at the end gets me every time such a good 80's vibe.

    3. "Teary Eyes"
This song for me is like the post pardon depression that comes after hooking up and figuring out your love life. it's so relatable. I LOVE the instrumental so much. It defiantly gives me a lot of gay club vibes. I can literally picture dancing to this in the club feeling depressed as hell while drunk and alone but having a good time enjoying being present with the vibe. This song describes that feeling. It's so so so good.

    4. "Daises"
It's a resilience kind of song about not giving up even though you have on yourself because of others idea of living. It's a good song to listen to driving by the beach or the road. I love the liberating vibe to it.

    5. "Resilient"
Lyrically I like it. It's cute but I'm not a fan of the instrumental. Every time I hear it it reminds me of one the "The Legend Of Zelda" games.

    6. "Not The End Of The World"
This. Song. Is. EVERYTHING. This is such a different vibe for Katy and I love it so much. The bass drop, the lyrics, her voice and the instrumental is so well put together. I love how dark it feels but it also has this transformer movie action scene kind of vibe to it. I really love it.

    7. "Smile"
    I think its cute.

    8. "Champagne Problems"
I think of myself at a very fancy dinner party and just feeling sexy with this one lol. I love her voice vocally. The chorus is fun, catchy and is a good song to really move your hips to.

    9. "Tucked"
I love the instrumental. The beat makes you move a lot and I'm here for it. my favorite part in the song is the "Lalalalala" part in the chorus. It's just pure endorphins lol. I like this one a lot.

    10. "Harleys In Hawaii"
This is also a different vibe with Katy. It's very slow but sexy and her voice fits perfectly with the vibe of the song. It's very chill. HER high note at the end is amazing also. It's a good listen.

    11. "Only Love"
I like the message with the song. That's pretty much it.

    12. "What Makes A Woman"
I LOVE this song. It sounds so beautiful. Seeing a lot of woman struggle in my life this hits home. It's very liberating and self excepting.

    FINAL THOUGHTS:
There is a lot of layers to this album that a lot of people don't see and I feel like that's because people have this generalized Idea of Katy and don't see her beyond her hit making. Wether this album charts or not this is an era of hers that represents hope and losing and I'm here for it. I like how she sticks to deeper meanings of situations today but keeps it hopeful in this album. It shows a lot of power and struggle of standing up but wanting to sit down and relax about your current issues in life. It has a lot of pop vibes and if you're not a pop person this is not necessarily the album you're going to gravitates towards. There are some elements I wasn't a fan of instrumentally but it's apart of her story telling and I respect that it's a different sound she's playing with to keep us talking about it. Overall I love the album. A lot of the songs are catchy, laid back, fun and liberating. Good Job Katheryn.

The record starts extremely strong - its first four tracks are all breezy, introspective, and sophisticated (particularly the pop masterpiece that is “Never Really Over,” which competes with “Teenage Dream” as Katy’s best song to date.) The album loses a little steam towards the middle, but manages to stay engaging on the more celebratory/romantic tracks (“Champagne Problems,” “Tucked”), and ends with the lovely “Only Love” and “What Makes a Woman.” Predictably, Smile is a pleasant extension of Prism’s adult contemporary second half (particularly the track “Resilient”), although the criticism of Perry’s use of self-empowerment cliches is fair. What makes the criticism of Smile so frustrating, however, is that the same critics who are now nostalgic for Teenage Dream (and who now call it a pop classic and a perfect album) were harshly critiquing said album just ten years ago. The critics curiously want Teenage Dream Katy back, but when Teenage Dream Katy was around, they didn’t appear to appreciate her either. When Katy experimented with new sounds on Witness, critics asked for her to stay in her lane; when she returned to bright pop on Smile, she’s accused of being boring and not taking chances. Critics be damned, Smile is Perry’s strongest work since Prism, and as a complete album stands at the top of her discography. Expand

Katy Perry brings a new point of view, focused on her personal life and feelings, without leaving aside the political theme. Some approaches are repetitive, redoing what she has already done in "Chained to the Rhythm". But his vocal interpretation doesn't sound so emotional. I highlight the songs "Never Really Over" and "Only Love" as favorites.

This is a good pop album, it's nothing wow or very very special, it's good and it's Katy Perry essential, and the critic aren't judging the music, but the person, sadly.

"Smile", novo álbum de Katy Perry, traz uma proposta interessante. Com menos de 40 minutos de duração, o álbum é extremamente fácil de ser ouvido. O ponto fraco do "Smile" é ele ter algumas faixas genéricas demais, em uma tentativa desesperada de trazer a "antiga Katy" de volta.

I really can’t understand what’s goin on with all the criticism about this album: it sounds like a great leap forward for Katy, has a very different style compared to her older records (such as Teenage Dream and Prism), and keeps up with the current music taste (which was not granted at all considering that Katy has been around since the 2000s, and many artists who have crossed the decadesI really can’t understand what’s goin on with all the criticism about this album: it sounds like a great leap forward for Katy, has a very different style compared to her older records (such as Teenage Dream and Prism), and keeps up with the current music taste (which was not granted at all considering that Katy has been around since the 2000s, and many artists who have crossed the decades just can’t adapt with the time passing). The dance and trap vibes of some tracks are really great. I think it might be her best work up to now, and the commercial success just confirms it once again. Expand

"Never Really Over" it's a very solid dance track with good lyricysm.
"Cry About It Later" and "Teary Eyes" have weird production, but still they're nice bangerz.
"Daisies" contains very nice production and imo the best vocals that Katy ever put out. "Resilent" is okay. "Not the End of the World" has a nice intro, and later nice "trap" hook. I love it! "Smile" is nice song, I like this

"Only Love" is okay. "What Makes a Woman" is also nice, and it's lyrics shocked me actually, but positevely.
Overall: it's an album to dance to, besides last two tracks.

NRO was a bop that was paid dust just because pop genre has been declining. Still my fav. Cry about it later and Only love are good. The latter reminds me of her Thinking of you style back then. The album is a grower for sure.

The title was right, I smiled listening to this new project, I also cried of joy. I'm so happy for Katy, now she's in peace with herself and she's doing what she likes, no matter what people are saying. What she says in "Only Love" is beautiful and so true : "Let me leave this world with the hate behind me, and take the love instead."

Seriously, give this album a chance, don't read what critics are saying, SMILE doesn't deserve to be underrated like that. This is one of Katy's best albums so far, and one of the best albums this year for sure.

Honestly? Doesn't deserve half of the hate it got from the critics. Of course it's not like Prism or Teenage Dream, but people can't expect a grown woman to stay on the same "rainbows, candy and california" vibe forever (and it's weird that the critics expected that from Smile when Teenage Dream had such a low score). In my opinion, it is a solid collection of fun pop songs that are bound to make you sing along and hum the melodies throughout the day. Katy has obviously learned a few lessons from the disastrous 'Witness' and she didn't mix woke politics with music this time around; the producers and songwriters she collaborated with on Smile are also a step up from those on Witness since the entire album sounds very cohesive and well-produced. Some of my favorite moments on the album came in the form of "Teary Eyes," "Cry About It Later," and "Never Really Over" -- all of which are quite reminiscent of the Teenage Dream era, and a reminder why Katy is still a force to be reckoned with in the pop world. Besides the familiar Katy Perry sound, you'll also see/hear Katy exploring some new territories, most notably on "Harleys in Hawaii" which has become somewhat of a fan favorite due to how underrated it is. However, for the majority of the album -- Katy seems to stick to what works for her and I don't really see a problem with that. The only bone to pick I have with the album is how messy and all over the place the promotional cycle had been with Katy releasing too many singles before the album came out, so the element of surprise was greatly reduced for me as I was already familiar with like 35% of the album. Also, some of the singles were just not good single choices, e.g. "Daisies" and "Smile" are ok album tracks, but they're most certainly not strong single material. Expand

    Smile - A Jornada Para a Cura (?)

    Smile/Daisies/Champagne Problems/Teary Eyes/Only Love/Harleys in Hawaii e Cry About It Later.

Without fleeting moments of bad taste, Perry does indeed sound mature, but she's also not quite as fun. That's a conscious choice, though. Smile is intended to evoke memories of her frivolous younger days while pointing toward a sustainable pop future.

While Perry finds the occasional moment of quality here (Smile and Tucked both feel like the best possible music we could get from Katy Perry in 2020), Smile is an album searching for an identity—and when it fails, it falls back on lazy writing.

Like Joanne before Chromatica, Smile plays like a necessary centering exercise, indulging her insecurities and less surefire instincts. If Witness was overdetermined, Smile is an earnest exhale, for better or for worse. It delivers an image of her journey towards inner peace that is honest (if corny) and catchy (if not exactly inventive).
