It´s so terrible that it doesn't even deserve a review. I can only say that at least this album is better than Witness (and that's not a compliment) and there are two good songs like Never Really Over and Cry About it Later. Katy Perry should really think about retiring, because she's adding literally nothing to the music industry. "but she's indie now". No, she's not even that.

It has some good songs, but most of the songs are quite basic. Most part of a song sounds repetitive, not fresh, and I don't like her voice that much, especially high note.

It’s okay but not really good music. It is like each KP Album. The lead single is trashy and cheap pop music.

Although some songs are okay, there is no cohesion as an album itself. It looks like the super star Katy Perry used to be in the past, it's not going to have a impact in pop culture if she continues this way. However, "Tucked" "Cry About Later" and "Harley's In Hawaii" are exceptions.

Basic lyrics that are corny. At times she nails it but it feels like an album loaded with filler tracks. It has a cohesive message but it fails to deliver lyrically.

As one of the most important pop artists in the world, Katy Perry creates a monstrous hype with this album's release. The finish result seems to be tasteless. There are just a few non-single songs that sound catchy but you can barely notice the change between the other songs.
After Daisy's birth the Daisies song takes whole new meaning and it's wonderful, but it's not enough for an album.

Personally, I loved Daisies, Never really over, and not the end of the world, but the rest of the album relied too heavily on cheesy lyrics and witness era beats, instead of pushing for something new like she did with Daisies. Honestly kind of disappointed with this album, as I had hoped that we would get an album with songs more similar to Daisies.

Katy Perry has been making music that is not too comercial as her first albums, it is an album that is not comercial even she tried. In my opinion it is her best lyric album, but not more.

An extremely clichéd and generic pop album. Katy has some gems in her repertoire but unfortunately this is not it. Lack of experimentation and trying to recreate the magic of her iconic hits is what it is.

Hmm... I am so sad to say, but this album is not going to do it for Katy. It’s to easy and cliche. Sometimes even awkward. I love Katy, but hate the new album. It’s disappointing to say, because she can do so much better!

Katy Perry paints herself as an underdog, someone who was cast out of pop heaven. Isn’t she the 8th best-selling female artist of all time? And hasn’t she broke and/or set so many records? The reason no one cares about Katy Perry anymore is because she gave up on her own career. Had she promoted “Smile” better, this could’ve been her Mariah Carey-esque moment. She needs a reality check.

I had hope because I loved "Never Really Over." But to me that the only "great" song on here. Katy Perry seems to always play it safe and this album is no different. Other pop start this year really brought unique concepts or cohesive albums and she just isn't ahead of the curve, but a follower. There's some interesting production, but that's really the only positive.

One of the worst Katy's album. She hasn't grown up at all. Typical rhythms and lines. Sounds like demo-version of TD. Katy's main problem is that she's afraid of going away from her typical Bubble gum outfit. She tryes to experiment but want to have TD's success. She wants to sit on both chairs but it's impossible and that's her main rwason of failure.

Katy Perry once again shows us what she can do artistically: nothing. In every release, she insists on motivational meaningless lyrics that can't help even a 10-yr-old girl improve her self-esteem. I AM NOT A K-POP FAN, but if you compare Smile with any other K-Pop album that has similar deepness in its lyrics, you'll see a huge difference in the input effort and technical quality. And gee… I'm not even talking about artistic quality.

I don't know if anyone from Katy's team will read this, but if they do, please do something about her artistic choices, she has been doing the same kind of music since the teenage dream era. If you pick random singles she has released since 2010, you can't say which is from which album. I'm not giving 0 to smile only because of the standard production of the songs (that certainly comes from high investment in equipment, producers, etc, not from Katy's work).

    • Tucked : 7/10 (sound familiar w/ someone's song, but the hook is catchy)
    • Harleys in Hawaii : 5/10
    • Only Love : 2/10 (chorus sounds familiar, again)
    • What Makes a Woman: 2/10 (production sounds familiar, and outdated)

'Never Really Over' was an infectious slice of electro-pop with a killer chorus. The singles that followed though, were unmemorable and hollow. Going in different sonic directions and nothing really sticking out. Along with this, there seemed to be little actual depth or theme, with everything feeling slightly confused. When the album dropped, it felt like a non event, an artist releasing an album with a wimper. The content? Well the good thing is 'Cry About It Later' is a euphoric throwback to the sonics of the 80's, along with 'Champagne Showers'. The rest of the album feels deflated, a 'I'm sorry for Witness and this is how I healed' vibe that doesn't really go anywhere. No song pushes the envelope where pop music is concerned, which begs the question. If the artist feels half invested and keen to try and stay in a sonic familiar lane, whats the point? Expand

So Katy Perry decided to not take herself seriously, and record an album for kids? Witness wasn't great, But at least it had replay value.

This is just so devoid of anything meaningful. Daisies is the only song on this album with any sort of meaning. This really ended up worse than Witness.

too generic, weak lyrics and no soul. Her worst project to date unfortunately.

Poor album, poor artist. Katy is a limited thing. This is sad. She just can't do something with quality.

Without fleeting moments of bad taste, Perry does indeed sound mature, but she's also not quite as fun. That's a conscious choice, though. Smile is intended to evoke memories of her frivolous younger days while pointing toward a sustainable pop future.

While Perry finds the occasional moment of quality here (Smile and Tucked both feel like the best possible music we could get from Katy Perry in 2020), Smile is an album searching for an identity—and when it fails, it falls back on lazy writing.

Like Joanne before Chromatica, Smile plays like a necessary centering exercise, indulging her insecurities and less surefire instincts. If Witness was overdetermined, Smile is an earnest exhale, for better or for worse. It delivers an image of her journey towards inner peace that is honest (if corny) and catchy (if not exactly inventive).
