The album tells the story of how Katy Perry recovered her smile, bringing a cover that ironizes the album's name, referring to a moment in her life when she compared to the famous "sad clown". We can divide the album into trios of songs that tell a story and talk to each other. Starting with "Never Really Over", "Cry About it Later" and "Teary Eyes", we can call it the "pain" part in Smile, where despite the pain, Katy gives us the feeling of moving forward "dancing", are songs that fit perfectly in her sonority. Next we have the trilogy "Daisies", "Resilient" and "Not the End of the World", in which we can call this trio "overcoming", where Perry presents the path of healing, from these songs Katy shows how she recovered her smile. The next trilogy is "Smile", "Champagne Problems" and "Tucked", we can call it "happiness", taking into account that this happiness was the result of the "overcoming" she had in the past trilogy. Finally, we have the last trilogy "Harleys in Hawaii", "Only Love" and "What Makes A Woman", where we can call "the love", since in these songs Katy expresses about different forms of love.     Katy stays true to her sound and identity. There's no need to just follow the new trends when they wouldn't fit her aesthetics... She offered us very captivating songs that can make us vibe and even dance. Pop Music needed an album like this, in a time when anyone needs an optimistic distraction. People criticising her for staying in her comfort zone would be the first ones to say she'dKaty stays true to her sound and identity.     This album really reminds me of Teenage Dream. It has great storytelling and presents very coherent songs. Except for the song Smile, I find all songs very pleasant. Every song is a hit... Cry About It Later, Teary Eyes, Not The End Of The World, Champagne Problems and Tucked, they all should be single. Well done, Katy! I hope you don't forget them as you forgot Legendary Lovers and Roulette.

    I ended up liking 5 of the 12 songs. With "Champagne Problems" we are left with essentially the same verse twice and an annoying chorus. Overall, the choruses (and pre-choruses) fell flat for me on 'Smile'. I also thought a track named "Resilient" would be a stand-out but what should've felt more tender and empowering comes off as a bit bland and lacking emotion. Maybe some of it isI ended up liking 5 of the 12 songs. With "Champagne Problems" we are left with essentially the same verse twice and an annoying chorus. Stand out tracks: Never Really Over (this and 365 with Zedd are chef's), Teary Eyes, Not the End of the World, and What Makes A Woman. The collection of tracks released in 2019 -- 365, Never Really Over, Small Talk, and even Never Worn White from earlier in 2020 -- seemed to be from a prior version of a would-be album then remade into what eventually came about with Smile. Sticking to the sound of those tracks and running with it would have made for a more enjoyable album. Anyhow, who am I but a pop music fan in his 20s leaving a review on here. Katy's making money, has become a new mother, and is proud of this album so cheers to her.… Expand

    I loved! Listening to the tracks, I was able to see the whole concept and feel the messages that were being passed on. who liked: amen / who didn't like: patience.

The first listen is very underwhelming, the only tracks I liked are Never Really Over, Teary Eyes, Smile, Harley's in Hawaii and Only Love. Of course I adore the message of Resilient and What Makes A Woman but I just don't feel the vibe of the melodies. The sound is very basic and unoriginal, nothingMaybe this is not her best album, but I appreciate the general message from the project.     The best pop album so far. The production and lyrics are very powerful. Cry about it later, NTEOTW, Teary eyes and Champagne Problems are another level. AMAZING

    This is probably my favorite album from Katy, I can't even describe the emotion I felt listening for the first time, it's just beautiful and so cohesive. This album literally puts a smile in your face and gives you hope of happiness, I'm so proud of her.

    The best album of Katy Perry so far! Both production and lyrics are phenomenal. My personal favorite Not the End of the World sounds like it came straight out of a movie. The album tracks represent Katy’s personal journey through depression and coming out of it, finding back her SMILE.

    Katy Perry is BACK baby. She brought excellency production that is equally matched by her powerful vocals, tantalizing instrumentals, and uplifting, at times dark yet powerful, lyrics. This album is perfect to dance it out or to blast in your car radio. The Katy Perry you know and love not only found her Smile but she found herself.

    Katy has always been that hit single machine to be honest and in fact that has been and is her brand. Her albums have definitely performed well previously but because they had huge singles in it.
    Smile as an album for Katy is definitely a milestone of her personal struggles but sonically and cohesively it falls short..     Without fleeting moments of bad taste, Perry does indeed sound mature, but she's also not quite as fun. That's a conscious choice, though. Smile is intended to evoke memories of her frivolous younger days while pointing toward a sustainable pop future.

    Like Joanne before Chromatica, Smile plays like a necessary centering exercise, indulging her insecurities and less surefire instincts. If Witness was overdetermined, Smile is an earnest exhale, for better or for worse. It delivers an image of her journey towards inner peace that is honest (if corny) and catchy (if not exactly inventive).
