It's a rather simple and straightforward comedy, but that's what ends up making it so enjoyable and it's undeniably full of heart, charm, and some genuinely funny moments, even if some of the humorous scenes and moments are played a little too safely at times. Dreyfuss and Menzies make for such a charming pair on screen, and their chemistry is undeniable, with some other humorous and worthwhile appearances from other notable faces, such as real-life married acting couple David Cross and Amber Tamblyn. Nicole Holofcener's sharp and keen eye to writing and directing shines brilliantly through here, and you can tell she really understands the couple dynamics quite well. Overall, though simple and straightforward, it's still surprisingly funny, heartfelt, and just a plain old good time.… Expand

Comedy is supposed to show us our foibles and flaws and in the process help us see ourselves a little better and not take ourselves so seriously. Her movies do exactly that. One thing for sure you can say about the films of writer-director Nicole Holofcener is that they’re rarely what you expect but always deliver more than you hope for. What’s more, given her recent track record, she keeps getting better andOne thing for sure you can say about the films of writer-director Nicole Holofcener is that they’re rarely what you expect but always deliver more than you hope for. What’s more, given her recent track record, she keeps getting better and better with each release. Building on inventive narrative styles, precise cinematic pacing, superb character development, a knack for capturing the unexpected and impeccable writing quality developed in her recent directorial works “Please Give” (2010) and “Enough Said” (2013), as well as her spot-on screenplay aptitude in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (2018), the filmmaker has done it again in this insightful comedy-drama, arguably her funniest and most accessible work to date. Holofcener’s multi-layered storytelling approach covers a great deal of ground, from how much honesty is too much to taking personal responsibility for resolving one’s own issues to wrestling with the ennui of nagging midlife challenges (particularly where matters of career performance are involved), and the overlapping story threads integrate seamlessly, often with carefully crafted, raucously funny boomerang effects. In addition to making viewers laugh, the film also makes them think, serving up incisive scenarios that truly give audience members much to contemplate, including incidents that they might have otherwise failed to consider. This is all stunningly brought to life by the positively stellar ensemble cast, especially Julia Louis-Dreyfus in one of her best-ever lead performances. To be sure, the story meanders a bit at the outset, but the opening act is decidedly designed to set up what’s to come, all of which plays out flawlessly as the picture unfolds. “You Hurt My Feelings” may not conform to convention or deliver what viewers expect going in, but, like a well-prepared dinner, it definitely satisfies one’s appetite for a thoroughly satisfying meal. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You Hurt My Feelings is really entertaining but also very thought provoking. I loved the theme of encouragement or lying to them in good faith can lead to people getting hurt or feeling like they have been led to a wrong path. I especially loved the long dialogue scene where the son tells her parents they told him he was great at swimming even if he actually wasn't or about the time his mom went to school to have his grade changed from a C to a B even if he didn't deserve that raise, and that these experiences made him feel like he was better than everyone else.
The dialogue is so realistic yet very funny and it is very dramatic when it needs to be. Julia Louis Dreyfus is wonderful as Beth but I especially loved Tobias Menzies as Don who gives a very restraint but nuanced performance. Michaela Watkins as Beth's sister is also very funny. There are several moments of drama that made me tear up but the story never gets too heavy and it balances the tone very well with extremely well written jokes. One conversation that happens after Beth is upset with Don about what they bought for each other that they actually didn't like was one of the laugh out loud funniest scenes I have seen in a long time. I loved this movie and I think multiple viewings are required to get everything out of the dialogue and the performances.… Expand

Part of me shares this sentiment, but it effectively overcomes this challenge thanks to the excellent performances of its actors, especially Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

While it may give off an initial impression of triviality and simplicity, the film soon transforms into the type of indie drama and comedy that offers more depth than expected, ultimately proving to be a highly rewarding experience.

Indeed, it is a small-scale production, but it leaves a positive impression, both for its impressive craftsmanship and the relevance of its subject matter. The moral of the story is simple and straightforward, yet it addresses an issue that many of us tend to avoid.

Give it a shot. It's a good film.… Expand
