This movie's greatest asset was that its plot was well-defined from start to finish. There were a few 'bumps', such as the nature of Apocalypse's power transfer and his own backstory, but all-in-all it was carried across very well.

Unlike past movies, where focus was given to specific characters like Wolverine or Mystique, this one spread itself across a plethora of characters in excellent form. It also combined several subplots which developed alongside the main one; Jean's burdening powers, Storm's admiration for Mystique, Magneto's loss of his family, and Quicksilver's dilemma of telling the truth to Magneto. Apocalypse's views on the modern world were surprisingly developed, even the little details such as him needing to learn the modern language. While his motives and backstory were a tad weak, within the movie his desires were full, from wanting Xavier's powers as his own to his own narcissistic lack of care for his followers.

Unlike some of the past X-Men movies where the climax has been rushes or unsatisfactory this one pulled a complete home run with their rendition of the iconic "Rise of the Phoenix" element that was much awaited by fans of the original storylines. Sophie Turner managed to not just fill the shoes left by Famke Janssen, but also stand on her own as Jean Grey's storyline grew from what had been set in stone in previous movies.

The diversity of its characters was one of its strongest points. Even for those with minor roles there was depth and remarkably strong parallels to the original characters, from Nightcrawler, the inexperienced kid wanting to be accepted, to Storm, whose desire to be a hero overruled her loyalty to a cruel overlord. For what small elements it may have lacked in early beginning it made up for later on.

All in all, a truly remarkable movie and a perfect follow-up to the strong story of Days of Future Past. By far one of the best movies of the year.

Where to begin with this rubbish: bad acting, incredible cartoonish and laughably weak villain, complete ruination of many good characters from the Series (Storm, Psylocke, and Magneto decide to just become mass murderers because, hey, why not? Munn did absolutely nothing for that character. Massive plot holes aside, Apocalypse fails to make a movie that pushes the series forward in any way. Expand

Is this movie completely, 100% accurate? Maybe not. I don't think it can be at this point with it being X-men movie #6. But, the movie did a good job of telling the Apocalypse story, and at the same time moved along with the progression of the "younger", original X-men.

If you are a long-time comic fan, I think you will be pleased with this movie.

X-Men: Apocalypse is one hell of a superhero movie and one of the most entertaining times I've had at the movies this year. While the plot and themes may be weaker than other X-Men films, along with a somewhat pointless sequence/cameo and questionable cuts, the action is some of the best the series has to offer. Some of the new character's backstories are a bit underdeveloped (i.e. Angel, Storm, Psylocke, and Jean), but the returning characters are fantastic, specifically at the start with Magneto. Finally, I personally loved Oscar Issac's portrayal of Apocalypse. Overall, X-Men: Apocalypse is a great time and one of the better X-Men films. Expand

//Pros: Some good, emotional moments
Varied exhibition of mutant powers

Too many slo-mo moments leading to overt dramatisation//

All else is being said about a weak Apocalypse could also be true. Bottom line: watch it once. It's still an enjoyable X-Men movie.

Not sure I agree with overloaded action so much as disappointing action. Civil War showed you can pack in a large amount of action and make it work. XMA delivered average at best in terms of action.
The acting was very mixed. Some of that was scripting issues, but some of what just not great acting. Olivia Munn was forgettable as Psylocke. Thankfully, Evan Peters continues to do a wonderful job as Quicksilver.
The big issue most had from the trailers was Apocalypse and he was not horrible, but not impressive. I blame that more on the director and writers.

There were some other issues I had with the director and writers. Not going to spoil the movie, but when see the scene with the arrow used, it was bad. Michael Fassbender did a great job acting in it, but the choices made by the director made roll my eyes.

The special effects was a mixed bag. There was times when it felt like a video game and other times it was awesome.

In the end, I would say unless you are a big fan of The X-Men, you should skip seeing this at theaters.
It was not bad enough to kill the franchise, but Fox should seriously consider letting Marvel take back the franchise and just pay Fox a fee every time they use the X-Men.

After the promising return to form that was delivered with Days of Future Past, this one gets too many things wrong. An uneven plot, overabundance of characters, and a weak and uninspired villain are just a few things that held the film back. In addition, this film must have been looking to Batman v. Superman for examples on what to do, because much like that film, this film delivered a nonstop amount of action, especially in the third act to the point of being just plain underwhelming! Honestly, it feels like Captain America: Civil War has been the only superhero film so far this year to get everything right! Overall, while it was nice to see many of the characters again, it's not enough to make up for the mess of a film that this was, as it's simply too long, too drawn-out, and too underwhelming as a result. That trailer blew me away and this was actually my most anticipated movie of the year. I was really scared because of the disappointing reviews and boy could I tell you, I absolutely loved nearly every single second of it. It's not a perfect movie but it really has a great script and action sequences. There were so many characters that were fantastic and just the idea of the mutants amazes me. I thought the villain, Apocalypse, was great in this film and he was intense at times. I personally thought the best scenes were either at Xavier's school or in the Egypt area. Man is 2016 rocking it with those superhero movies. The only thing I could say slightly negative about this film was the film length as it was a bit too long, just like any Marvel movie. If you loved X-Men:Days of Future Past (I didn't particularly love that film, but it was okay), then you should like this movie. Go see it and support it as my theater had less people watching this than Captain America: Civil Warm, yet still being nearly full. I really hope this film does well and I look forward to watching it again in DVD. (98/100) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I avoided reviews, even non-spoiler reviews before seeing the movie. I was excited to see the third installment but had little to no major expectations after the BvS incident (I disliked BvS very much, firstly because I expected more of an Injustice approach but eventually ended up disliking it because it did not convince me that that's how characters I knew would react in the provided situations; but I digress...).

I felt like the movie was not worth watching at all (my opinion... but this is my account, therefore relevant). Even though I liked First Class more than Days of Future Past, I loved what they did story-wise to Magneto in the sense that the character continued the story from where it was left off, though in the case of Apocalypse, I felt like the character was just introduced with, I don't know, am I supposed to think it was Polaris, his offspring, in his new exposition drama? I was thinking to myself: "Give this guy a break!", I mean not even Joss Whedon is this cruel to his characters over a hypothetical three movie-length series. Little to no dialogue on the supporting characters paired with little to no tension throughout the whole movie made me wonder when will the trailer will end and the movie begin. I felt that the editing did not focus on the story, and by this I mean that I felt that everything was predictable (the scenes were not transitioned in a way to make you wonder or to properly explain the situations, it felt like a roller coaster of unnecessary, poor and recursive exposition and action scenes); from the self-referential jokes about the third one in the series, to the Return of the Jedi twist that macguffinly presented a way for the good guys to win (the bad guy's apprentice turns on the bad guy because his son is in hurt by him, which I believe, is now a trope).

All in all it's a good story for a four to six part comic book story, but not enough for a movie to create a convincing scenario for an audience like myself (see there, I distracted a general criticism to emphasize on my point of view because critics don't make a movie good or bad, we all evaluate them more or less, but I believe that the more critical we become we encourage quality, but that's like the good side of something and it's completely subjective and all in all it's pointless... GODS, do I digress? Yes! Yes, I do.

And I just did again.). Where is the reactionary feedback from the humans? How come Apocalypse just picks Psylocke because she's there, and moreover, where's her character? How come we don't establish Storm better? Why does Sophie Turner look like she's waiting to be directed more than embodying the character she's supposed to portray in a more vivid way(I mean, I know she doesn't fully control her abilities and all, but she seems to be stuck aside from her "Watch this, I can make us like we're not here gimmick.")? Why do we focus on the same "Oh, Professor X stands for this, and Magneto is just too radical!" crap? I mean over the span of three movies I guess that I expected something, but only after feeling disappointed for SOME REASON when the movie was over.

Just to be sure I clarified: I did not go in wishing this movie to suck. I did not have high expectations for it as a new installment in a superhero movie franchise. I just feel like it fell short of being a good movie. I don't think it was bad. I think it was mediocre and with some technical flaws. But that doesn't make the movie less enjoyable unless you feel it's boring you. And that's what I felt. A redundant approach towards characters over a plate of mix of good and bad CG effects (by my appreciation, here's an example of what I mean: Psylocke's effects were awesome but the whole tearing Cairo asunder felt like a video game cut-scene from the 2000 and by that I don't mean necessarily bad, but completely breaking immersion from the rest of the action).

This is a very enjoyable, action-packed movie that also does some decent character development and relationship building. I was especially pleased with the way the film ended and the team it put in place for future sequels. Don't believe the negative press. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok Wow! Brilliant! So following the Days of Future Past's cast and added a few new faces for Jean Grey/Sophie Turner, Cyclops/Tye Sheridan, and Nightcrawler/Kodi Smit-McPhee. I do believe THIS is the BEST X-Men movie to date! You basically get to see a lot of different X-Men throughout the whole film! I believe a major highlight for me was Sophie's Jean Grey portrayal, best performance for her! It was pretty perfect for an X-Men fan like myself, like if you grew up on reading the old school X-Men comics you'll enjoy it! Bryan Singer has his hits and misses sometimes i guess... But this film really topped itself to the Toppest of all the Notches! aka Top Notch! A+ Film! Beautifully crafted, well directed! I was super f**king excited to see the Essex name after all those credits! Bring on, Mister Sinister please! One of my favourites for 2016! 2nd just after Cap 3: Civil War!! Also... THAT Psylocke/Olivia Munn Love it, so Hot!!! Bring back Rogue, Kitty Pryde and or Iceman, maybe with a new face for next one!! I cant wait for the next one! Expand

X-Men Apocalypse shows a great and cool super villain getting rekt by young X-Men while having a lot of potential to use it for more movies.
The action in X-Men Apocalypse can be great but not enough to show the real action of the most powerful mutants on earth.
It would have been better to see way more death and destruction (Even when there is a lot of destruction) since this confrontation was about the most powerful mutant and 4 followers against some untrained young students.
In any way X-Men Apocalypse is totally awesome and is very nice to see specially Quicksilver's scenes, it has some spice of humor and a lot of plot concentration, while letting a lot of action apart.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well paced for the 1st hour establishing the origins of Apocalypse panning to the present time set in 1983, with introduction of new younger characters for Second Class students including Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Nightcrawler, Quicksilver & Jubilee, unfortunately the latter turns out more of a cameo saying only 2 lines the entire film. To which Apocalypse arose from his slumber with no thanks to Moira, began to find himself in the new world, planning world domination and unleashing chaos & mass destruction with assistance of newly recruited 4 Horsemen, including Psylocke & Angel (sadly downplayed), with wandering lost souls, Storm & Magneto, on the verge of giving up hope on humanity, facing conflict upon questioning their leader's true motives. Following the abduction of Charles Xavier, Mystique & Beast are left with no choice but to take over leading the new X-students on a rescue mission. From this point, the flow becomes sloppy which seems rushing right into final battle, witnessing the start of chaos destruction overloading with too much CGI. Oscar Issac is an amazing character however not as menacing as fearful as we thought to portray according to the comics. Wasn't much into Wolverine's cameo sequence, probably ruined due to major spoiler revealed on the final trailer... Funny how at one point in the film, where the X-students exit from the mall, with Jean making a comment on how the 3rd movie is the worst which totally suck, ref to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, while in reality, takes a jab towards the dismal 3rd X-movie 'The Last Stand' (2006). Makes one wonder as the irony being the 3rd film of the reboot trilogy since First Class (2011) is following suit. 3.5/5 Rating! It's just a good movie, but not great enough, measuring up the expectations of predecessor's success & box office smash 'Days of Future Past' (2014). Recommended! Expand

Apocalypse is one of the three most well known storylines in the overall X-Men franchise. With Phoenix and Days already done, this film was inevitable. Despite my apprehension, I can say that it was a pretty good movie, but not without itsApocalypse is one of the three most well known storylines in the overall X-Men franchise. With Phoenix and Days already done, this film was inevitable. Despite my apprehension, I can say that it was a pretty good movie, but not without its flaws.

My biggest fear was the acting, but all the actors played their parts well. I really liked Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse. However, Sophie Turner was absolutely horrible as Jean Grey. She had absolutely no range, using the same expression in most scenes she was in. However, she’s evened out by Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, who manages to give a very good performance that makes me believe he’d grow up into James Marsden.

My other concern was the story being overdramatic. While I was wrong, there is a flaw that it’s a little rushed on several points. It felt like several different storylines were meshed together: The Apocalypse story, discovering the original X-Men, and a continuation of the story with the First Class characters. If this was split into another movie, they could have fleshed things out more. However, the story works with what we’re given and it’s an overall good experience.

The effects are amazing, with three specific scenes really shining through with them. I won’t say what they are due to spoilers, but one involves Quicksilver’s superspeed again and the other is pretty much the majority of the climax. While the action is good as well, the one downside is that there isn’t a whole lot of it. Almost all of it is in the trailers so there aren’t a lot of surprises.

Apocalypse is a good movie, but it could have been better. If it was split into two films, the stories could have been fleshed out more with better character and more action. What we get, however, is a good addition to the X-Men franchise and I look forward to what’s next.

Sidenote: I think the film would be interesting to see in 3D, but not a necessity. There IS an after-credits scene, but the reference in it is a little obscure to me, so you may need to have a bit of X-Men knowledge to get it.

By building on what's been established by the previous X-Men films (especially Days of Future Past and the terrific X-Men: First Class) Bryan Singer and crew are able to juggle a good handful of characters without losing sight of their personal struggles and motivations. Apocalypse is a megalomaniacal villain, and perhaps a bit too evil when compared to the series' more grounded/grey-area antagonists (especially from X2 and DOFP) but Oscar Isaac is commanding in the role and his..ehem.. "apocalyptic" plans for the world fit the grand scale of this story. In fact, what I liked most about X-Men: Apocalypse is how every element of this movie, the writing, characters, action, special effects all worked together; no scene felt wasted (even at a 144 minute run-time) and I was never confused as to the stakes that were raised by the narrative. I do wish this movie had a warmer reception, but I'm just glad I decided to give it a chance; I loved it! Expand

I felt like they had set up Apocalypse well enough, when it came time for the payoff, the film sort of dropped the ball and he became like any other generic villain. I expected more from him, to be honest.

That said, I appreciate how seriously the movie took itself, and they found a good balance between action, humor, dread, and character moments. I think I liked it more than Days of Future Past (which did right by the characters but had way too many plot holes). It also ties together the two timelines pretty well, but on the whole, the plot was rushed and kind of all over the place. Another issue with Apocalypse: his powers are not carefully defined by the film, so while he appears insanely powerful at first, you're not sure just how much he can handle, or what he's capable of when pushed his limits. Also, his motivation comes off as quite generic and even uninspired for someone with such grand designs. I felt like they didn't do the character justice.

The other new mutants introduced are a treat though. Olivia Munn's Psylocke is bad ass, though I wish there were more of her before the last act of the film. The only one who was so-so for me was Angel. This film has a lot of good ideas and memorable scenes, but because they have to juggle so many characters with their own backstories, motivations, etc., the level of dramatic shorthand used (cough Auschwitz cough) kind of keeps the film's beats predictable and holds it back from the greatness it wants so desperately to achieve. Fassbender as Magneto and McAvoy as Xavier are just spot on as always however, no complaints there. Sophie Turner pulls off a pretty good American accent and does justice to the character of Jean Grey, and the dude who plays Cyclops also does a bang-up job. It's amazing seeing Jackman return as Wolverine, even if it's just briefly. The only character who I could have used less of was Mystique - it feels like her role was beefed up due to Jennifer Lawrence being more prominent in Hollywood. Sadly, her character arc is extremely boring and she looks like she's about to fall asleep in every scene she's in. Another complaint I have is that it's hard to imagine the first X-Men movie taking place AFTER this one, since the stakes are raised so highly and so much has happened by the time the world is "saved" at the end of the day here. I can't imagine what the body count must have been. Anyway, it's a pretty good movie. I went in with low expectations and I feel like I got more than what I paid for. I just don't know how rewatchable this is because gosh does that second act drag on. Maybe they should put Matthew Vaughn back in the director's chair next time, though.

Apocalypse: "You follow blind leaders."

While X-Men: Apocalypse isn't quite as strong as 'Days of Future Past', with the storytelling and it's twist & turns, but it's still a solid entry in the saga. I have to admit, I was surprisingly entertained with this movie which I didn't expect going in, since I wasn't expecting much with this movie. I had more fun with this than 'Civil War', and yes, I just said that and I'm not taking it back. The movie has it's flaws but at least I never bored watching the movie.

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner and all of the other supporting cast were all great in their roles. I felt the emotion, the depth and the unexpected humor from the characters. Now when I think about it, all of the X-men characters in this and the past movies feel like actual characters to really care for. The movies themselves feel like actual movies and not just superhero films.

Oscar Isaac is such a terrific actor and I will always look forward to his next movie. In this film, Isaac plays Apocalypse (main villain of the film) and he was a pretty decent villain. He was very menacing with his own presence that actually made him quite treating, even tho he's motivates of destroying the world has been done before many times with other villains. Apocalypse isn't terrible or a weak villain as many critics have said, but I wouldn't rank him as the best one. I mean give Oscar Isaac a break, he had to act in all that make-up on him and he did the best he could, so there's that.

Some of the CGI in the film was very noticeable in a few scenes. But the effect's are not like that all the time, as there are many cool effect's in the film that did make me go "wow".

The movie dose take awhile to get going and I don't mean it was slow or anything like that, but I couldn't really care for what's going on in the first 30 minutes. But as the movie went along it started to get going and each scene was better as it went along.

Overall: X-men: Apocalypse is a very entertaining superhero movie that has it's pros and cons. I was surprised of how much I enjoyed this movie and how engaging I was. Oh, and Quick Sliver once again steals the show with an amazing slow motion sequence that easily tops 'Days of Future Past' slow mo scene. I can already tell a lot of people are going to be mixed with this movie after seeing the audience reaction (so far), but that's just opinions.

P.S. The film itself is much better then what the critics are making it out to be. Maybe it's because of the endless amount of superhero movies that are coming every week now. 'Civil War' is still being fresh in peoples heads. I mean the movie literally came out a few weeks ago.

The movie starts off on a high note, with a spectacular sequence set in Egypt that blew me away, and i mean BLEW me away! it felt like an adventure movie of some sort!
After that action-packed opening we start to follow Xavier and Magneto and all those familiar faces that once again, shine. The stand out of this movie, on my opinion, is McAvoy. The guy is great! He creates such a relatable Charles, and he is just very likable!
There are new faces, of course, and they all do a pretty good job with what they´re given. Sophie Turner in particular, her Jean Grey is very, very good.
There are these amazing set pieces throughout the movie and some really magnificent scenes. One in particular being the Quicksilver one, which is indeed the best i have ever seen from him.
Oscar Isaac´s Apocalypse is fine, although coming across as a bit cliché.
Overall, this was a fun movie, and yes, it has a lot of structural problems and some pacing issues, but just don´t dismiss this movie, while not great, it´s pretty good.

The dust has settled from “Days of Future Past”, and for many that might even be the best in the series. “X-Men: Apocalypse” might not surpass DoFP, but it’s still a fine film – for some. The focus is heavily on Magneto & Charles; meanwhile smaller characters are easily left out – development nor inside to them are neither presented in an acceptable amount. Our antagonist is a classic villain from the past but where’s the drama? Where’s the depth? Where’s the understanding? All he gives is destruction. But with destruction comes action; and Brian Singer once again shines with his direction, and Quicksilver. It’s an entertaining film with some clever humor here and there, but it’s not more than that. The plot is acceptable but it doesn’t really feel like an X-Men film. The focus is much more on the plot rather than on the characters — and the objective could have been much better presented; there isn’t a strong want-to for the success of our heroes. A somewhat predictable story and a lack of creativeness is another aspect. But it’s still an enjoyable ride into the world of our beloved heroes – even though the majority are very underdeveloped. It’s no fair comparison against DoFP, and it’s not a bad movie – but not exemplary either. Expand

Giving this installment a crappy review equivalent to travesties such as the Fantastic Four series is a great disservice! X-Men Apocalypse is simply a more 'traditional' than the usual X-Men films. There is a move towards embracing the 'fantastic', something more similar to its source material. Gone are the leather costumes...replaced by comic book perfect garbs and action sequences. Sure some of the effects are a bit spotty (it is cheaper to produce than Days of Future Past), but for the most part it is a great end to the 'First Class' trilogy. Expand

It is the ninth installment in the X-Men film series. Directed by Bryan Singer, with a screenplay by Simon Kinberg from a story conceived by Singer, Kinberg, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, the film features an ensemble cast starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn and Lucas Till. In Apocalypse, ancient mutant Apocalypse awakens and plans to take over the world, so the X-Men need to stop him and defeat his team, the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse.

--Critical response:

-On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 59%, based on 61 reviews, with an average rating of 5.8/10. On Metacritic the film has a score of 51 out of 100, based on 24 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".

-Mike LaSalle from the San Francisco Chronicle gave the film a positive review, calling it "a thinking person's action movie" and complimenting the movie for its high stakes. Bruce Kirkland from the Toronto Sun gave the film a positive review, acknowledging "Piece by piece, Singer fits this ninth film in the franchise (which includes Deadpool) into the X-Men universe like a master puzzle maker. He does it so well, at least in terms of storytelling, that the X-Men franchise still has a vigorous future."

-Mike Ryan of Uproxx gave the film a negative review, noting it felt redundant and stale, writing, "I get it: Life is hard for mutants. We all get it. It’s literally the only thing mutants ever seem to talk about. It is odd that other superheroes seem to get to have some fun, but never the X-Men. Here we are, 16 years later, and everyone involved is still sad. It feels repetitive." Scott Mendelson of Forbes noted the series felt repetitive, writing, "X-Men: Apocalypse is the kind of weightless, soulless trifle of a bore that makes comic book superhero movies look bad and makes me not look forward to the next installment."

--Sequel:

-In May 2016, Kinberg stated that the next X-Men film will be set in the 1990s. Kinberg has talk about redoing The Dark Phoenix Saga and Singer did want to do an X-Men movie in space.

Is the perfect closure of a trilogy that resurrected the X-men series after the disasters that were X-men3 and Wolverine Origins.

Don't be fooled by the bad trailers, this is not a film about Jennifer Lawrence, is a about the whole team and all the cast works pretty well, the action is really well executed and the ost is brilliant, from the beginning to the end I didn't wanted to abandon my seat. Mcavoy and Fassbender were great, but I feel that this time Mcavoy did it better. There are a lot of tear jerking moments, there are a lot of action moments, there are a lot of 80 galore moments, it had so much that I never feel tired like other movies with the same length.

Unfortunately this film has two letdowns, special effects and makeup, I don't know if fox give less budget, but the effects were not as impresive as when I saw the last two x-men movies and the make up certainly ruined Apocalypse's presence, don't get me wrong I loved Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse, he did it well, but the make up was not on par with his perfomance.

Overall this is a movie that every X-men and comic book fan should see, don't listen the critics and make your own judgement, I'm glad Bryan Singer make this movie and I hope there are more X-men movies on the way.

The film suffers from a plethora of problems, and struggles to limp through which is shocking considering how great Days of Future Past was. X-Men: Apocalypse is entertaining, but suffers from terrible special effects and post production, and a very weak villain. The most sad thing about this film is that it had so much potential to be great, and just took a long walk off a short pier.
The biggest advantage this film has going for it is it’s super talented cast, who show up and give it their all, despite a weak script. Lawrence, McAvoy, and Fassbender all make this film as entertaining as they can, and the action sequences are fun to watch. However, the script has serious problems, many of which are too hard to overcome. Put frankly the story isn’t well crafted at all, it’s choppily thrown together more resembling a set of disconnected scenes following each other not a story.
The film’s biggest crux is it’s special effects and post production. This may sound odd, but they are, in some cases, so bad that they are distracting. The dialogue is one major problem, as clearly there was a lot of ADR (Automatic Dialogue Replacement) or dubbing, and it often doesn’t match the lips or doesn’t sound like the actor has the rest of the movie. Above that the special effects, whether practical or digital, looks bad. The CGI isn’t very good, the sets are noticeable and flat, Apocalypse’s makeup is obvious, not very good, and distracting.
On that note Apocalypse, the titular character is one of the movie’s biggest weaknesses. Noted as one of the comic’s coolest villains with an unflinching belief in darwinism, the film’s villain more represents a shell of that. Oscar Isaac isn’t the problem, as he gives the performance his best effort, but the character has weak motivations at best, and isn’t all that menacing or memorable. A product of a lazily crafted script where the character that binds it all together has no real dimensions and is essentially a flat shell of a cooler idea.
It’s ironic that Fox spent almost 200 million making Apocalypse, and spent just under 60 million on Deadpool, a far superior film. The best way to describe X-Men: Apocalypse is a mixed bag, because it’s not a terrible movie, but it’s not a very good movie either, it’s just mediocre. The film is obviously the product of a poorly crafted script, which is a shame, because it could have, and thus should have, been better.

It felt nice having a villain other than Magneto as the central protagonist but with that said, I expected more from Apocalypse. Also, a few more minutes of his backstory would not have hurt the movie time wise at all. It was also a relief not having Wolverine as the focal point and rather reduced to a cameo/action scene. The acting from the cast is surely not Oscar worthy but they get the job done. All in all, if you're looking for an enjoyable movie with a decent story then check this out. Critics are just destroying this film and being way to harsh whilst not a cinematic masterpiece it does pass as a nice easy going flick that has some great scenes that just falls a little flat due to pasting issues, a bland villain and just to much going on plot-wise. But besides that every performance is amazing, the reintroduction to characters like Jean, Scout, Night-crawler are awesome and it's great to see them back *even with different actors* Its just a really entertaining film. Personally my biggest complaint is just Apocalypse, hes just not a very menacing or interesting villain, he's just a really kinda goofy big macho big baddy that feels strangely out of place in this film franchise, especially at how emotionally gripping it can be at times thanks to magnetos character it kinda feels really awkward having this big blue mutant thing walking around who can turn people into sand. I enjoyed the film for what it was, but I really wish the film had more focus. Also i really wish Apocalypse was a better fleshed out character and had more reasoning and depth behind his motives. He just lacks it, which makes it really hard to feel invested in the final fight in the film and all the action that happens.

Pretty alright film, nothing amazing, but nothing absolutely terrible.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" Closes the Trilogy With Many Visual Effects, Drama and Quality

Bryan Singer, Apocalypse and Quicksilver compose a film about the cataclysm.

After four films based on Marvel's comics, Bryan Singer firmly demonstrates is owner of the best of the powers of the "X-MEN".

One decade after "Days of Future Past," Professor Xavier's young students must confront the villain more powerful and fearsome of the history, located in the pyramids of the ancient Egypt, close to El Cairo.

Oscar Isaac plays Apocalypse - unrecognizable after his work in "The Force Awakens" as Poe Dameron or "Ex Machina" as "Nathan", using blue makeup, boots with heels, prosthesis and a heavy costume that turned recordings into something hellish- a supreme being who over the years has absorbed the powers of many mutants, after 80 years sleeping under the Egyptian pyramids is accidentally awakened and seeing that his world is praising false gods decides to destroy the human race completely.

Singer decides to resume the franchise after "X-Men: First Class" in 2011, this brings back to the mutants better known as James McAvoy's Professor X, Michael Fassbender's Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique and Nicholas' The Beast, joining to spectacular cast, new and talented youths to the team.

Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner from "Game of Thrones"), Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) are juvenile interpretations of mutants already seen in the previous films, they give you a touch more fresh and comical to each character while still retaining the essence itself. On the other side are the four horsemen of the antagonist, Psylocke (Olivia Munn), a renovated and young Archangel (Ben Hardy), Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and the very famous Magneto (Michael Fassbender) faithful to his master, until a certain point.

A luxury cast bought 20th Century Fox to project for the fourth time to the "X-MEN" franchise, nominees for the Oscars, winners of Oscars, nominated for prestigious awards increase the expectation of the fans, and from what I saw, action and drama are present in each framing.

This is a tradition, this is an addiction, this is a necessity. Once more the fabulous Evan Peters' Quicksilver runs a masterful slowdown scene in the scene, with many jokes, action, happiness and perfection. Since the moment that the scene becomes slow and a bee appears next to a flower, we knew what it was going to happen, the music plays and all goes to **** It's **** amazing. I think that Quick has been established as one of the best X-Men, becoming like the actors for the film, like the water for humanity, he's a necessity in the saga.

Throughout the film, it also presents a pleasant and surprising cameo - in the full sense of the word - you know who we are talking about, despite being short and very bloody, the man does his job and leave.

Bryan has worked a little more than sixteen years with the mutants, his knowledge is obvious to mix so many characters in a different age and yet provide a coherent, articulate and outstanding story. Relations and changes of the characters are also highlighted. The merit is not only to Singer, It's to entire team.

"Apocalypse" might not be the best superhero movie to the public child considering that is very dark and sinister, but it can be pure entertainment for infants and adults, something not will like much the fans because the film replaces the lack of genuine entertainment by tons of action and CGI. Opinions are mixed, but it is irreproachable do not say that the film is worthy of receiving the name "Apocalypse".

This is probably the worst X-Men movie for a long time. It's over extended, boring and contains a lot of crappy realized scenes.

I understand that It takes place in the 80's but that artificial creation of the mood just don't fit. Colors are like from the disco or a 90s porn movie and stuff like Mortal Kombat costumes in Auschwitz are some kind of a sick joke.

But the worst thing are the scenes which take place in Poland. I'm from Poland and I can assure you we have laughed out loud of those. Actors trying to build up the mood in foreign language look just silly and I'm sure that's not the kind of atmosphere you want on the screen when drama takes place!

Also, the main villain is a mix of funny guy and some angry kid who can't even choose his companions wisely. But hey, he can do some mumbo jumbo with his hands and give some nice toys to his mates - so awesome.

I must admit tho', that the movie has some cool characters and decent scenes (Quicksilver rulez) but that's all. I can't recommend more in this long and rather dull performance of actors lost in their roles. Waste of money.

The film was a disjointed mess, probably not helped by all the time traveling malarkey of the previous films.
I tried to get into it, but just found myself checking my watch every ten minutes or so, just wanting the film to end. That's how much I was enjoying it!

I don't think I'll be rushing to buy it when it comes out on DVD

And yet, my feelings leaving the theater were just so-so. The visuals are great, though as always in these films, some moments are very obviously CG. The story was just okay - nothing very original or creative. They didn't try to stretch themselves at all when it came to the plot or dialogue. Also, the action largely wasn't very satisfying. With few exceptions, I feel like Singer doesn't know how to make combat with these kinds of powers interesting. In fact, in combat, most of the characters seem to forget what their powers really are.

On the plus side, the characters are fun and well portrayed. Watching them interact with each other and have a good time is a delight! Quicksilver outdoes himself. As amusing as he was in DoFP, he's much better here! And the young X-Men do an excellent job as replacements for their older versions (some are even better).

Anyway, it's worth seeing, but it's far less than it could be.

I could see a lot of the problems they had with the film. The beginning was trying to weave together too many threads and none of them were particularly strong. The special effects are kind of suspect and the title villain is by far the weakest part of the film. William Stryker was a more interesting villain than Apocalypse in the film and he had about 2 minutes of screen time.

The whole production was still a lot of fun though. The film started off weak, but as soon as you see Quicksilver, the film starts to perk up. He is once again the best part of the film and balances out extremely uneven performances from some of my otherwise favorite actors like Oscar Issac and Michael Fassbender. Quicksilver steals every scene he’s in but they still keep him in balance with the other characters. Sophie Turner also has terrific screen presence and I look forward to seeing this actress come into her own.

Part of the reason I enjoyed the film was that it had just so many comic characters and nods to avid comic readers. Yet, this both hurts and helps. Seeing Caliban on screen was pretty great, but the true to the comic outfit for Psylocke (Apocalypse too) made her look extremely out of place in every scene she was in. While I like that they went for it, all of the other Horsemen get practical armor and she is just wearing the least practical thing available and it’s just all you can look at every time she’s on screen.

I would recommend this movie if you’re a fan of the film series and the comics, but otherwise I would stay away from it because it is going to be not only confusing, but what works about the movie probably will not work for you.

This movie its a great addition to the "new franchise" of x-men movies. It was fun, it was entertaining, and it left me felling like I should watch it again in Imax just to get the full impact of the awesome fight scenes and brutal finale. The movie is a bit long being two hours and a half, but it doesn’t feel a second short or long. I enjoyed every moment of it from the action, jokes, and character development.
It feels a bit more like Xmen First class, because it introduces a new team, and tries to develop each member a bit. I understand that it may be hard to follow, but having the limited knowledge I have about the franchise I didn’t felt lost or as if the movie was going too fast to understand. All the characters seemed to have their purpose and motivation. Visually it had great CGI and makeup, the acting was great.
It was a good movie, and one I wouldn't mind paying to see again.

Fourth superhero movie in, and we are only just over half way there. 'X-Men: Apocalypse' is a dark, threatening, and sometimes deliberately paced story. The movie begins somewhere in Egypt where we see En Sabah Nur who used to rule Ancient Egypt, until he is betrayed by his worshippers, and they try to stop him, but his four loyal men die trying to preserve him.

We cut to 1983, and it seems that the mutants we know as "X-Men" are still going their separate ways. We see that Erik aka "Magneto" (Michael Fassbender) is living a happy life with his partner and daughter. Charles aka "Professor X" (James McAvoy) is taking charge of his school for gifted mutants with Beast (Nicholas Hoult) also looking after the school.

Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) is still looking for new mutants and comes across a teleporting mutant who goes by the name "Nightcrawler" (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who she takes to Charles' school. Havok (Lucas Till) is back as well, and is concerned for his younger brother Scott (Tye Sheridan) as he cannot control this dangerous laser beam that emerge from his open eyes. Havok decides its time that he goes to Charles' school where he can learn to control these powers. This is also where Scott meets Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), who is having trouble sleeping as she can see/predict the end of the world, which will be caused by Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac).

There is a lot of this plot to talk about, but to avoid spoiling it, I'm just going to talk about the things that worked and the things that didn't work. What worked the most was the story, I found myself invested in the somewhat scary story of Apocalypse and how he plans on bringing the end of the world, along with his allies including; Magneto, Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy) and Psylocke (Olivia Munn). I also liked the more darker and violent tone of the movie, probably the darkest since 'X2: X-Men United' (2003), and it is a very trippy experience, especially towards the final battle at the end of the movie.

Oscar Isaac is great as Apocalypse, he seems menacing, he blends in fully to the role, and when he screams, his voice is convincing enough to lead you to believe that he is truly Apocalypse.

Evan Peters returns as Quicksilver, the fast and zippy mutant we all loved from 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (2014), he has another scene stealing moment, and it's arguably better than from the previous movie.

James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender also commit to their roles as Xavier and Magneto, you still believe their tested friendship, and the way that they seem so drifted apart because of the different things they go through, it's almost heartbreaking when you see what happens with Magneto.

What didn't work would be the pacing, this is a very unevenly paced movie...but it isn't as disjointed as 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (2016), nor does it use all of its characters to their full potential like 'Captain America: Civil War' (2016). There are some mutants, mostly Angel and Psylocke, who aren't seen as much, and they're not as fully fleshed out as I would have wanted them to be.

The stand-out performance here is 'Game of Thrones' star Sophie Turner as Jean Grey...she commits 100% to her role, and she is definitely memorable in her performance.

All in all, 'X-Men: Apocalypse' may not be 'X2: X-Men United' (2003) or 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (2014), but it is definitely nowhere near the poor quality of 'X-Men: The Last Stand' (2006) and 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' (2009) (a movie I don't like to mention), and certainly nothing like the abysmal 'Fantastic Four' (2015) (a big mistake from Fox). Bryan Singer does what he can with this movie, and at least 70% of the time, he's succeeded. It's better than you would expect.

However, it pales in comparison to Days of Future Past and Deadpool. There are moments in this movie that are absolutely wonderful and others that were just there. And, really, that's the biggest problem with this movie: there's just too much going on. During the first third of the movie I felt like I was watching a collection of scenes, not a coherent story. It also means that parts that should have been focused on are sometimes glossed over. I get what they were trying to do with the film, but they don't quite pull it off. In the end, it's a decent but very flawed movie. Expand
