This wasn't the best movie on the franchise, nor the worst. Just another enjoyable chapter adding up to the X-Men saga without doing anything new, nor anything really awful. It's an OK film.

And Quicksilver is f*cking amazing.

The film does take some time to get rolling but I felt invested in most of the characters that were on the screen. This is because First Class and Days of Future past did such a wonderful job of setting certain characters up. McAvoy and Fassbender reprise their roles as Professor X and Magneto. Their chemistry is still strong and a great source of emotional investment. Jennifer Lawrence returns as Raven (Mystique) along with other familiar faces like Beast, Havoc, and Quicksilver. Quicksilver once again has a wonderful scene and I would go so far as to say it may even be better than the one in DoFP.

The villain Apocalypse is imposing and feels like a proper threat. To avoid spoilers, as the movie progresses the stakes are exponentially raised. His ensemble of disciples or 'four horsemen' so to speak are just kind of there and seem like they exist because the plot demands it. The only character of these four that receives any form of proper characterization is Fassbender's Magneto. The additions of characters like Angel, Psylocke and Storm feel a bit like they were thrown together in a hurry. Psylocke and Jubilee in particular felt entirely wasted.

Nightcrawler along with Quicksilver add some nice moments of levity. This levity balances out the destruction that happens elsewhere in the film. The score and visual effects are quite nice as well.

Apocalypse overall is a flawed but enjoyable film.

It's definitely worse than the prequels but not that awful either. Apocalypse turned out to be a disappointing villain (though I feel like Oscar Isaac did the best he could with the material given), plot was fairly weak, ugly cg floating rubbish and I still think the mystique makeup on Jennifer Lawrence looks terrible. But overall I quite enjoyed the movie: Magneto had a great arc, I liked the new young versions of the x-men and quicksilver is awesome as ever (plus a cool cameo of you know who). Want to give it a 7.5, but since metacritic doesn't allow decimals in userratings I'll round it up to 8. Expand

I know Apocalypse has been compared to a Power Rangers villain, but for the WHOLE MOVIE to feel like a Power Rangers film is just LAZY. Everything else in this movie, including the crappy makeup of Beast, stupid costumes, Olivia Munn's cringeworthy performance and stupid outfit, horrible acting and lines that don't even fit together, "destroy the world" scenes lifted straight out of literally every other movie (do they just have a template for destroying the Manhattan Bridge now?).

Hugh Jackman looked bored in his scene, while he was getting shot at, apparently nobody can hit him with fully automatic weapons at five feet away. Apocalypse looked retarded and the green screening on the mountain was some of the worst I've ever seen and you can tell on a home screen. Cringey evil characters standing around trying to look tough. Etc., etc.

It is directed by Brian Singer with a screenplay by Simon Kinberg. It stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn and Lucas Till. In Apocalypse, the ancient mutant En Sabah Nur awakens in 1983 and plans to wipe out modern civilization and take over the world, leading the X-Men to try to stop him and defeat his team of renegade mutants. I personally loved this movie from beginning to the end. I started to get emotionally invested from the Magneto scene in the woods, and from then on it was just a thrill ride. The acting is absolutely great from everyone, starting with the always amazing Michael Fassbender, who is exceptional on the role as always. The newcomers all do a really good job with the stand out, Sophie Turner who definitely does not disappoint in the iconic role. Apocalypse, played by Oscar Isaac who is taking over the world by storm (in this movie quiet literally), looks really good on screen, and the acting by Oscar is fine and serviceable. What irritated me the most were the special effects, which certainly could and should have been better. Even First Class had better effects than Apocalypse, I mean it's not all bad, there are scene that are great to look at but sometimes it just lost me on all the obvious green screen. The music is undeniably good though, the main theme is great and memorable. It does also feel a bit too long, especially with all the leading up scenes, but overall this is a really well made and absolutely fun entry in the X-Men franchise. The new trilogy, First Class, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse, is most certainly one of the best superhero trilogies there are. Expand

The CGI was quite average and some of the dialogue was bad. The quicksilver scene was the highlight in my opinion, but I'm annoyed at how comic inaccurate the X-Men movies are. Just please give them their classic costumes. Overall it was quite enjoyable and I'd watch it again eventually. Expand

Well lets get the pluses out of the way.

That was quick, now on to the negatives. The CG in this film is atrocious and extremely distracting. I dont know what happened but many of the 3d models looked unfinished especially their textures. They surfaces look too perfect and the effects from powers like Magneto looked very cheesy as well.

Next, Apocalypse is about 5 feet tall and his armor looks life foam... the quality of costumes and makeup for his character were a travesty and reminded me of the kind of stuff you see in low budget TV shows like Dr. Who. The only thing he had going for him was his synthesized voice.

Next, this was a sort of origins type story for the prominent X-Men but it strays a bit from the comics. This is fine and well if the origins made sense, but they didnt. For instance, Storm is depicted as an Arab with a Mohawk running around Egypt stealing and living on the streets. Well lets assume for a second that all that is believable, the question is why in blazes does she just use wind or other powers to take what she wants? She clearly had the powers already, yet she still got her hands dirty for almost no reason.

Then we have Quicksilver (again) who is basically a God but somehow manages to be completely useless (yet again) despite having the power to pretty much end the story on his own. For instance, he could have found Charles and ran him to another continent during the showdown but instead he decides to go meet daddy because you know... he couldnt make time for both... oh wait... yea he could have. He could have saved Charles, plucked all the feathers off Angel, stripped Psylocke to her panties, shaved Storms head, grabbed a Cappuccino from Starbucks and he still would have had time to spare to talk to daddy... but no... instead he decides to go talk to dad and then go and fight Apocalypse. And then there is the fight... he could have skewered Apocalypse with 1000 shiesh kabobs, lit his feet on fire, teabagged him a few times, and then severed his head with a butter knife but nope... what does he do? Slaps him a few times and punches him in the gut... whatever.

Next we have Charles who was basically worthless despite being able to control pretty much anyone he wants. At any time, he could have controlled any of the horsemen but instead he just sat around useless crying for help. Jean was also practically worthless until she "let go" and allowed her powers out which meant, we got to see a glimpse of the Phoenix again (yay... not). In the movies she has become a one trick pony because the movie writers think this is all she is good for. Oh what else... at least the didnt mess up Scotts part then again he didnt really do much anyway except mow down a door.

Just a lot of wasted action and I have played 15 year old video games with better CG than this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am by no means a superhero fan, in fact, aside from Batman and the X-Men, I really don't care, but as someone who has been into X-Men since he was a kid, and seen just about everything, the day it came out, I really can't understand all the bad reviews and the complaints about violence towards women! This film has been called the worst X-Men film ever, nothing is worse than Last Stand, and as far as violence towards woman goes, there has always been fight scenes and there have always been male and female characters involved, in fact, X-Men has always received high praise for included female characters as equals, since the very beginning, so what is it, they aren't allowed to lose a fight? As far as the film goes, the story was terrific, the action sequences and special effects just continue to get better, and the introduction of Cyclopes (Tye Sheridan) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-Mcfee) into the prequel cast just made everything that much better. Without giving anything away, I will say that my one knock on the film would be in the ending. There was so much build-up around the character of Apocalypse and so much talk about how powerful he was. Half the film follows him as he gains power and puts his plan together, but the final battle, that determines the outcome of the film, didn't take very long at all. There was all this hype and build up to this ultimate battle, that could determine the fate of the world, and when it happened, the fans were left scratching their heads by how quickly it ended. Hopefully it was all done with a purpose, and we'll find out why in whatever comes next, but as it stands now, the ending of the film was extremely anti-climatic, besides that, I loved it! Apocalypse might not have been as good as First Class or Days of Future Past, but it certainly wasn't a stinker on the level of Last Stand, the way that most critics portrayed it to be. Expand

Apocalypse ultimately failed to live up to Days of Future Past or even Deadpool, which I felt was somewhat disappointing. The film is extremely action packed, which to some can be a good thing but it leaves for an otherwise uninteresting plot with cliched and dull narrative, too many side characters and story arcs left un-fleshed out left alot of questions for the editing. Its like Singer had made plans for a 4 or 5 hour film but Fox had him cut it down to just under 2 and a half which left for alot of weird moments and characters that just felt empty. I found Jennifer Lawrence to be utterly annoying by the films end, I liked her in First Class but as the movies have progressed its seems as if her Mystique is nothing more than a blue Katniss Everdeen wannabe. Olivia Munn was just annoying almost at first sight. The movie had some redeeming qualities although, I found Apocalypse to be well done, Hugh Jackmen as Wolverine was a welcomed sight and the performaces of Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Even Peters really redeemed the film in alot of ways. While it does have some moments, the film is obviously the product of a poor script, editing and direction, which is disappointing, because it could have and really should have been a better follow up to Days of Future Past and Deadpool Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great film overall. Very familiar "X-Men" plot. Apocalypse is very well portrayed and a carbon copy of most iterations. My only gripe with him is that he didn't have an insurmountable feel. I would have like to have seen a few moments of complete despair where it seemed like he was un-defeatable.

The overall portrayal and casting of the characters was absolutely great. The Wolverine origin was spectacular and that sequence alone was better than the entire Origins movie. Over all a great film. brought me back to the 90's watching the animated series.

Great entertainment with some fantastic performances are sometimes lost due to average visuals and a villain that could have been so much more.

The Breakdown:

Story: 3.5/5

Strengths:
Pacing is fantastic.(Which can easily be a problem when involving so many characters.)
Great humor seasoned throughout.
Call backs to the previous films. Makes for a great bookend to this story arc.
Characters minus a few of the villains are handled extremely well

Weaknesses:
Apocalypse and Psylocke under developed
Quicksilver’s moment to shine tries too hard to out due his debut.
Moira (Rose Byrne) feel’s like a 5th wheel in the final act.

Characters: 4/5

Strengths:
Michael Fassbender continues to shine as Magneto
Josh Helm (Stryker) and Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) embody the performances of their predecessors.
Kodi Smit-MchPhee great take on Nightcrawler

Weaknesses:
The Pentagon Generals were very non-believable

Visuals: 3/5

Strengths:
Nod to the 90’s cartoon series uniforms

Weaknesses:
The special effects are very average and not polished.
There are multiple scenes that scream “we’re standing in front of a green screen”.
CGI moments that feel like they were done for television instead of a big budget summer film.
Apocalypse makeup and costume distract Oscar Isaac's performance

Bottom Line: 3.5/5

"X-Men Apocalypse" is a worthy edition to the franchise. The overall story and performances make up for the disappointing special effects. Oscar Isaac did what he could with Apocalypse but given more screen time and a better visual look he could have been an amazing villain. I look forward to what they do with the next outing with the Second Class of X-Men.

There is a post credit scene. Stay in your seats folks!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished watching it and I didn't even realise that it took 2.5h.

I'm not a diehard x-men fan and just occasionally watch these marvel movies as they come out, so my opinions about the movie are of a casual movie goer.

The movie doesn't need a "complicated" story like the Days of Future Past had to be good. A simple good vs evil is nice break from all that once in a while. Here we had a simple, but well working story.
The main villain is introduced and his powers are explained well ahead of time before he actually appears doing anything, but the intro is absolute gold.

I just felt that Apocalypse didn't really do anything really evil. He killed a dozen of normal people.
Magneto was ripping everything around the world apart. Apocalypse shot nukes into the space.
Wolverine killed a bunch of soldiers. Apocalypse enhanced Storms powers.

Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique has become a stronger character than ever, while Evan Peters' Quicksilver continues to steal the show. Michael Fassbender gives another strong performance as Magneto, continuing to make him a more believable character. I've read a lot of complaints that the villain was underdeveloped. Now, yes, he was a bit, but thanks to Oscar Isaac's menacing performance, he still serves his purpose. I did find it a tad overstuffed -Rose Byrne's character didn't really need to be in it- but all flaws aside, it was still very enjoyable. The new characters such as Nightcrawler were great, and it brings the "First Class" trilogy to a satisfying close. The final verdict: It's probably best suited to X-Men fans but for all its flaws, it's a fun entry to the franchise and better than the reviews would suggest. 7.5/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie has a lot of problems, but they all boil down to bad writing.

The only good parts of the film are the Quicksilver scenes and the final fight sequence.

The dialogue is weak and oftentimes spells out obvious things for no reason. There are too many characters and their development is rushed and doesn’t have much impact - even previously interesting and complex characters like Magneto are given cliched, hamfisted storylines.

The new younger characters feel particularly out of place, like they belong in a teenage TV drama.

The pacing is bad and even simple things like using the appropriate music for a scene are somehow botched - the Apocalypse/Angel scene being a prime example.

Meanwhile, the mutants recruited by Apocalypse are terrible choices. One of the most powerful mutants ever recruits a random Egyptian girl that steals money, a chick in spandex, and some teenage rebel with wings. If he’s so intelligent, couldn't he spend some time choosing actually loyal followers with more useful powers?

This film is a disappointment compared to X-men first class and days of future past.

The movie was really utter crap. Nothing original to be seen.

Whilst I really liked days of future past, thought it to be stylish and well-paced, then this trainwreck really is very embarassing from the get-go. This is the 3rd movie in my life-time for which I was really holding myself back from throwing my popcorn and leaving the theater mid-film. Might as well had done that.

What's really infuriating is that Marvel and 20th Century Fox have this nonsensical grip on the press. How on earth do critics diss the well-done Warcraft movie and tolerate this one (though not saying much, because there's really nothing to praise here)?

It's the old "really bad guy from ancient times (Egypt) comes back and tries to take over the wooorld" trope, with that really being just it. Only action scenes after one another make for puke-inspiring pacing and some really horrific "few seconds of idyllic life, family gets killed, now Magneto is evil" crap tropes filled over all the scenes they spared some dialogue on.

Derp-faces all over.

Singer should be ashamed. I'm not at all confused as to why Jackman chose to ditch the franchise. It's becoming more and more a crap cash-grap with no shame.

Whether you consider this to be the third, sixth, or ninth film in the franchise, it can't be denied that X-Men: Apocalypse would have had to work hard to stay fresh, as have its predecessors since the mediocre end of the original trilogyWhether you consider this to be the third, sixth, or ninth film in the franchise, it can't be denied that X-Men: Apocalypse would have had to work hard to stay fresh, as have its predecessors since the mediocre end of the original trilogy (and the critically panned X-Men Origins: Wolverine). First Class reveled in its role as a rebooted period piece. The Wolverine mixed the superhero and Japanese martial arts genres to great effect. Days of Future Past indulged in time travel (and fan service). Deadpool was one of the funniest send-ups of any film genre in history.

Apocalypse doesn't try to do anything of the sort. It's just a straight-up comic book film, one that could have been a part of any franchise, set in any decade (excepting the shoulder pads on Jean's jacket). There are some standout moments, but they're nothing we haven't already seen before (like Quicksilver's bigger big moment). The effects are decent but not jaw-dropping. The havoc is widespread but impersonal. At no moment did the fate of the world or any of its important characters seem in doubt. So it wasn't a bad film, but it could have been much better, particularly with such a contender of a villain.

I would rate it somewhere a little under Captain America Civil War. I think the issue was there were some characters that had some really great scenes and performances, and then there was some characters that just came off kind of bland. They didn't break those bland characters, but they just weren't able to elevate them so they were just alright. The main story was kind of bland as well, but it wasn't bad nor ridiculous. I feel this movie was kind of a bridging movie to bring the X-men into what we traditionally know as the X-men so we can now have X-men movies and the backstory is done. For that I think it did a pretty alright job. Expand

Early stills and footage made me hesitant. He is a character that could be quite hard to adapt to the big screen. Unfortunately that is exactly what happens here. His power level varies wildly from scene to scene to the point where he should literally be able to do anything. Oscar Issac and their choice of makeup costume also doesn't convey the appropriate screen presence. He should be menacing and dominant the scenes he is in. That just doesn't happen.

The second major problem is that this movie is much closer to Last Stand than First Class. Besides costume choices, there is no real connection that this movie is set in the 80's. There is also way too much mutant bloat. Yet again Angel is poorly done, Psychlocke is a nonentity, and Havock is killed in a ridiculous way (wtf did Beast put in that jet engine). The movie, and franchise suffers by having Mystique be the main lead. I just don't think she is that good of a character. Jennifer Lawrence is attractive and in other movies (Silver Linings Playbook) I have found her to be outstanding. Mystique is just flat to me. Oh and Dark Phoenix is clearly the next story. Boo. I am not invested enough in her character for that story to carry a whole movie.

Quicksilver is great as always. Beast is decent. I liked Storm as well. Overall though the movie was just eh.

It's chaotic on a grand scale - possibly the most wide-scale destruction ever put onto screen. Not only is it visually stunning but the characters are surprisingly balanced for such an enormous cast. They're each given time to shine, especially the newcomers, and some of the best scenes of the movie are comprised of these brief character moments. For once it's fitting that the villain's motive is world domination; to see it come into fruition is truly a sight to behold. It's far from perfect, but no action superhero fan should miss out on Apocalypse. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They even make reference to it in the movie "the 3rd film is always the worst".

This wasn't THAT bad, but it's far from good or the first two. It looks really poorly made in parts, like the entire fight scene in Egypt looks like it was out of a 2006 movie. Very poor green screen and wire tricks, just not well done. The other part that sucks is Ivan Ooze oh I mean, apocalypse. Really poorly designed and looks just so bad on screen, aside from that he's too powerful and you are left wondering why doesn't he just end it, what is he stalling for.

I just want an xmen movie where we see great characters, using their powers and basically fighting each other, Brotherhood agains X-men and this is FAR from it. The fight scene between Charles and Apocalypse is also really poorly done, SPOILERS ......... it's a dream style sequence apocalypse doesn't actually grow large like he is supposed to.

Jean Grey all of a sudden unleashing her Phoenix powers, having no affect on her after the fact, not fainting after unleashing that sort of power..... it was a quick and (stupid) way to wrap up this movie honestly, lazy. It's a shame because Jean Grey and Cyclops are really the only GREAT part of this movie, loved them, loved the actors and wanted more from them.

There was VERY little powers used or fighting in this movie at all, its entirely all saved for the last 20 mins and boy is it NOT worth the wait. I am super let down by this movie as a DIE hard X-men fan and STRONG lover of the other two movies. This at best is a very long trailer for the next movie starting the new cast, but its a painfully bad x-men movie.

Such a damn shame.

En Sabah Nur, the world's first mutant, was the ruler of Egypt thousands of years ago but was betrayed by his followers, buried under his temple.

He is rejuvenated when Moira McTaggert allows sunlight into the chamber, giving him new power and life. Apocalypse goes about recruiting new Horsemen in Storm, Psylocke, Angel and Magneto. The new team of X-Men, consisting of Professor X, Cyclops, Jean, Beast Mystique, Quicksilver and Nightcrawler, are tasked with saving the world from Apocalypse's "cleansing".

I'll start out with my negatives before going on to my positives.

I feel like Apocalypse was very misused and wasn't formidable. Seeing Apocalypse in the comics and even the 90's animated series, Apocalypse is an extremely powerful mutant and though his powers were impressive in the film, he himself didn't impose much of a threat to the X-Men. He mainly used the horsemen to do his bidding and set about destroying cities and landscapes. The fact that a teenage Nightcrawler was able to take the fight to him single-handedly goes to show how much he was powered down in the film. Apocalypse is a villain that could easily have been a threat in more than one film, much like Thanos being the "big bad" in the MCU.

I was a little confused as to why someone like Magneto would be given a plot line where he is living among humans and holding down a regular job, much like Wolverine in 'X-Men Origins', it just doesn't fit his character as someone who despises humanity and is always out to bring mutants to the forefront. The whole premise of his family being killed was to make it believable that he would become one of the Horsemen, which I wasn't a fan of. For a mutant that the X-Men nearly couldn't defeat in 'Days of Future Past', his teaming up with Apocalypse should have been game over, especially for a group of teenage X-Men.

For a movie with a villain like this, I felt like it lacked action. Sure, the destruction scenes were pretty cool, but the fight scenes were very lacking. The first half of the movie didn't have a lot of action and had a massive amount of dialogue. Sorry, but I don't want to see the X-Men just standing around talking while a 'God' is about to destroy the planet.

The entire X-Men film franchise, to me, has no direction. It jumps around in different time periods and has no problem disregarding continuity. 'Days of Future Past' essentially renders 'X3' and 'Origins' useless. It's like the team at Fox will continue to keep just pumping out different stories and plugging in characters and plots where they see fit, foregoing any kind of cohesion. Yes, seeing an 80's-style X-Men film was neat, but I don't want to keep going back to the past for this franchise. A modern story line is what this franchise needs, and if rebooting is necessary, I'd be all for it.

*Do we REALLY need to see the 'Dark Phoenix' plot again? Sure, it wasn't done well before, but I think there are other ways to make Jean interesting without recycling that plot again.

**Just because Jennifer Lawrence is playing Mystique does NOT mean she should be at the forefront of the franchise. Mystique was never one of my favorite characters and is given way too much to do only because of the star playing her.

***Storm was very under-utilized and was pretty much a non-factor.

Now, on to my positives.

The movie was visually pleasing. The massive destruction of cities and landmarks was really cool. The bright colors and humor made for a nice tone, especially set in the time period it was in. Though I didn't care for Magneto being a Horseman, his reasoning for doing so made sense within the context of the film.

I really liked Nightcrawler, I felt that his depiction was very accurate to his character as a meek, timid "person". His fight scenes with Angel were really cool, as he was "bamfing" all over the place.

I liked the younger X-Men finding their way and learning about their powers, but I feel like a movie of this magnitude wasn't the right place for it. A film with a lesser villain would have made more sense in its place.

James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Professor X and Magneto, respectively, are great. Getting to see those characters as younger men has been the highlight of the past 3 films. Sure, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan are phenomenal, but their ages make it too difficult to have them included in battle sequences.

I really liked the costumes, specifically at the end when we got comic-accurate ones, though it was just a quick glimpse. Though the black flight suits they were in were reminiscent of the black spandex of the first films, the design was cool. Psylocke was easily the most comic-accurate costume to date.

Apocalypse seems like he's written by a nine-year-old: he can control matter, teleport, instantly learn English from a TV, he's psychic - his superpower seems to be that he's immune to whatever problem he's currently faced with. It's like playing pretend with a kid who always has an excuse for never losing.

The odd thing is that these inconsistencies are all peppered with a lot of comic book fan-service. Psylocke is here, with her 90s costume, but her powers make no sense. Angel makes his transformation but had no 'good guy' affiliation before, so there's no real conflict. He barely has any lines (as usual with Singer, almost none of the villains do).

There are a lot of callbacks to the earlier movies that don't make a hell of a lot of sense, and characters are shoehorned in to fill some kind of mutant quota (Wolverine, Jubilee, even Magneto and Beast). Despite all this, it's a reasonably fun movie. If you're not an X-Men fan, I wouldn't recommend it.

The villain is lame beyond all hell (essentially a Power Rangers villain, but less menacing) and the Xmen are pathetic. Essentially NOTHING happens. Wait no, a town is destroyed. Some c-list Xman dies. Charles goes bald in the most dramatic way possible. And the plot holes holy jesus, there are far too many to count. My personal worst actor goes to Pyslock. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Critics are not too harsh! This movie might have a few great moments and the X-Men are well portrayed but in general the movie does not contain a plausible storyline and I never really felt any emotional connections to any of the characters. The fact that a movie uses special effects well is not nearly enough to produce a great movie. One of my main issues is the villain itself. He spends half the movie creating new fancy looking pieces of armor for his randomly picked "powerful" followers and therefore was neither credible nor menacing in any way. I enjoyed Deadpool, loved Civil Wars but I would not recommend watching this movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Again Fox does the same thing over and over again, which is ruin their and mess up their timelines. I mean this movie just basically cancelled all the events that took place in the first trilogy. If this is a younger version of Storm,Jean,Scott then how did they all meet nightcrawler, i mean in the first trilogy Jean and Storm didn't meet him until after he attacked the white house, now suddenly Fox decided no it's time to change that. Another Example, this is third time they tell you how wolverine got his adamantium claws, the first was in X2, then in Origins Wolverine now this, and if Jean and Scott supposedly meet him when they were young, THEN HOW ON EARTH DIDN'T HE RECOGNIZE THEM IN X-Men 1 while they were older and same goes for them, and don't say memory loss because he already had undergo ed the experiment.

In general, i just found this movie and excuse for Bryan Singer to continue doing X-Men movies, all he does is change Wolverines past and ruin the timelines, i hope that after Wolverine 3 Fox sell the X-Men back to Marvel because they will just continue to ruin the X-Men

One of this year’s 437 superhero movies, X-Men: Apocalypse, has given audiences around the world a reason to put down the pitchforks aimed at Fox for not selling the rights to Marvel, and to grab a bucket of popcorn instead.
I would be wrong to make the practical costumes not my first glowing remark about this movie; seeing the actor’s faces and not a digital puppet made for great, and unfortunately unique experience. Oscar Issac stole the show with his performance as the titular villain, which was made all the better by it actually being his performance. While James Spader’s performance as Ultron in Age of Ultron was great, the fact I was looking at a cartoon did take away from it. By going with practical costumes X-Men solved a common problem and hopefully paved a way for future blockbusters to follow in their wake.
Oscar Issac wasn’t the only actor who delivered an amazing performance, all of the cast on a whole did. Michael Fassbender as Magneto gave a deep and sorrowful performance that could pull tears out of a statue. Sophie Turner has given me great hope for a Dark Phoenix storyline in the future, and Jame McAvoy continued to fill the shoes I thought no one could fill after Sir Patrick Steward left the role.
There were two characters in the movies whose amount a screen time shocked me, Olivia Munn’s Psylocke and Evan Peter’s Quicksilver. Quicksilver was given a much more important role than I had assumed, which was a great surprise. He was the comedic relief in the movie and unlike with most recent blockbusters he managed to not be cheesy and to be comedic, what a relief. As in Days of Future Past there was a long and incredible sequence with the silver speedster, this one better than the last; it might be worth the price of admission just for that one part.
I was disappointed that Olivia Munn’s character was as underutilized as it was. Seeing her do as many interviews as she did led me to assume she would of had a bigger role than “pose a couple of times and say this one thing.” Psylocke wasn’t the only character left underdeveloped; Angel and Storm both left me wanting more. While I understand that the movie was packed and that not every character could get a far reaching character arc it would have been nice to get to know these characters more intimately before the standard last act fight sequence.
After the climatic final fight and the dust settled the heroes returned home to their destroyed home, and I finally got to see something that I always wanted to see: the mansion being rebuilt. While it may sound stupid I always wanted to see how the mansion kept being rebuilt after the many times it’s been destroyed, and finally seeing it should’ve made me leave the theatre with a smile on my face.
What took that smile away from me was the post-credit sequence; for the past couple of years now my hatred of them has grown exponentially, it’s to the point that I prefer the Stan Lee cameos over them. This particular waste of time had no dialogue, was as vague as possible, and over in a flash. This will be the last one I wait through ten minutes of credits for and not just pull up on Youtube when I get home.
This movie grossly surpassed my expectations. Director Bryan Singer has once again delivered a fresh break from the Marvel cinematic factory with a movie that, despite its flaws, I’m sure I will watch again.

It still has all the elements that make the franchise great from Xavier and Magento’s relationship, to using the mutants to explore themes of prejudice, and Quicksilver. Had this film come out ten years ago I’d say it was about as good as the first two X-Men. However, those X-Men films while not great by today’s standards are acceptable given the times, we were still recovering from Batman and Robin; but given how far standards for comic book films and what you can get away with in such films with the line being pushed by The Dark Knight and the Marvel Cinematic Universe this is no longer fine. The standards and line has been raised and Synger fails to evolve with it. Is he clinging to old traditions or is he trapped in the rules of the world he created? If Deadpool and the MCU were fun drunken parties than Apocalypse is a dry cocktail party where every now and then someone kills the mood with a belch. It’s fine for what it is but there’s something more exciting happening next door. Hopefully, these mutants were learn to evolve to the next stage as Marvel has. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I must say that this movie is definitely fun to watch for core comic book fans, and fans of the X-Men cinematic universe. However, as a casual moviegoer, there lies quite a few problems, rendering it to mixed reviews and being the second lowest rated film (on Rotten Tomatoes) in the entire series. There weren't enough fights between the X-Men and Apocalypse, who again, sounded repetitive and boring most of the time. A lot of key X-Men themes were touched on and never explored again in the film. There was an obvious focus on the future of the X-Men series, rather than the Apocalypse they're facing now. It just didn't seem like the end of the world was near, and that is where my main problem lies with this movie. The inevitable comparisons to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War places this movie right in the middle. Apocalypse definitely accomplished more than Batman v Superman but it didn't deliver as well as Civil War did. All in all, X-Men: Apocalypse is a must see movie. It starts off at a fine pacing with several pieces of subplots to reintroduce the old members, decently surface the villain but due to overloading of stories to tell, there's a lot of flaws especially at the final act as well as some underdeveloped new characters. The story still focuses on the three main characters - Xavier (Professor X), Erik (Magneto) and Raven (Mystique), all deliver promisingly just as previous installments that leads to a very engaging chemistry together with powerful scores by John Ottman, visually stunning effects and a number of fun moments delivered by both Professor X and Quicksilver (although the latter seems to steal the attention much better in two major scenes). The theme of hope might not be quite resonant this time and it might not be the best entry in the trilogy but overall it's more humanly emotional engaging and certainly one of the quite successful superhero trilogy reboot. Sigh. ***SPOILERS***
- Terrible directing. Dialogue comes out stilted and unnatural, with awkward performances from much of the cast.
- Story? Not really bothering with one. Side-stories concerning the characters? Started and then just dropped. Completely dropped.
- Nonsense changes from the outcome of the last movie. Charles erased Moira's memories of the last event. For no apparent reason. At all. Also... it was basically rape. Mind/memory rape... and everyone seems to think it's just cute and funny that he did that. It's not. It's horrific.
- They don't seem to understand the powers of the characters in the movie... even after establishing them. Nightcrawler can't go through a wire cage. No, he can't go "through" electrical current-areas now. It's... beyond unclear and doesn't make sense. He teleports, director, he doesn't "go through" things. That's why he can appear in *places he knows well without having to see it, you explained his powers in the movie yourself*. It's one thing to just change the way a character's powers work... it's another to go out of your way to explain how they work and then actively work against your own explanation.
- People were upset, in the past, how poorly the Phoenix Saga was represented. Well, the director has listened to our complaints, and straight-up ignored them. Same thing's going on with Jean, she's just crazypants.
- Writer 1: "Darn, we ceded too much power to our villain and he has control of Prof. X... what do we do with the story now?"
Writer 2: "Just magically give him the power to fight the villain out of nowhere for what is clearly no good reason except that we don't know where to go with this".
Then he's easily defeated, anyway, and that part of the fight is rendered not only non-nonsensical but pointless, as well.
- Think Beast is a cool character? Meh, he's just some scientist for most of the movie, and is only beast near the end. Oh, the **** version, not an interesting version. Enjoy.
- Wolverine shows up, and mostly kills some people off-camera before disappearing. One okay spot in the movie. Then he's gone.
- Prof. X knows that he's teaching a kid, Cyclops, to use his powers and that uncontrollable, powerful lasers come out of his eyes. So they set up beside a pond and have him shoot at a target by a big tree. The tree is destroyed. Prof X puts the kid on a big guilt trip about how his great grandfather planted that tree and it was his favourite spot in all the world. **** you, Xavier, the kid had a blindfold on because of his laser eyes, and you set him up to shred your favourite thing, then blamed him.

To hell with this movie. Again, this director has zero respect for the source material. No, really, I'm not making that up. He BANNED all comic books from the sets of the X-Men movies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "X-Men Apocalypse" is one of the most polarizing films I had seen in a long time. The things it does well is very inspired but everything it does wrong really drag it down to a mixed bag instead of a satisfying entry in the series. For instance the titular villain Apocalypse was not that interesting. He is really nothing more than an obstacle for the X-Men to overcome instead of a compelling antagonist in his own right. Granted the character in the comics was also a generic villain but the film would have benefited from a needed update to give him more depth. Oscar Issac does deserve credit by capturing a presence on screen but it is a real shame that the way his character was written was not that engaging. Aside from Magneto the rest of the horsemen were barely developed. Storm in particular was very underutilized as her powers were only used to produce lightning instead of using the full power that she is known for. The reason for her inclusion to the Horsemen was rushed at best since her reasoning for joining the Horsemen was no where near developed as it could have been. Angle has it worse since the original character tried to live up to his namesake but is guilty for committing human errors. The Angle in this film is a generic bad boy who is only there to be a rival for Nightcrawler. Magneto's character arc was revolved way to quickly as he just helps the X-Men for the sake of convenience. There is also a subplot involving Wolverine which could have been cut from the film and it would not have made a difference. It is obvious that he wasn't meant to be in this film but was thrown in at the last minute to satisfy the producers. Characters move back and forth like Jean Grey and Cyclops just fell for each other. Nightcrawler is utilized well but he is barely given enough screen time and the death of Havoc felt like a cheap ploy instead of a carefully crafted tragedy. Despite these glaring issues there are some things it does really well. The scenes with Magneto trying to reform was really well done. They were compelling to watch as he tries to fit into society and start anew as a family man in Poland. The death of his Wife and Daughter was heart-breaking and the tragedy was reinforced when the police officer showed genuine remorse for his action. The scene with Quicksilver was the rare instance with lightning striking twice. The super speed is more impressive than in the previous film. James McAvoy is once again a great young Xavier and Jennifer Lawrence once again captures the essence of Mystique and even becomes a new leader for the X-Men. I am not sure those elements are enough to save this film from mediocrity though since it is clear that this was not made with a singular vision. I would recommend this film to those who just want to see an action movie for the weekend but if you are a die-hard X-Men fan like I am than you are more likely to be dissapointed. Expand

Toss them in a blender and you have the inevitable fight to save the world. One of the things that makes this more enjoyable is that each hero's abilities are used in interesting ways, instead of the typical massively-destructive battles. The character interaction is usually engaging and best of all, there are no long scenes of metaphysical hand-wringing or interpersonal drama. Most of the encounters are brief and compelling. The action sequences are well staged, even sometimes cool. After 2.5 hours, the last 20 minutes drag down with muddy conclusions, but it's still one of my favorite superhero flix. Of course, stay thru the credits for a very confusing setup. Expand

Apparently there is another popular X-men character in the film that I completely missed.

Nightcrawler along with Quicksilver add some nice moments of levity. This levity balances out the destruction that happens elsewhere in the film. The score and visual effects are quite nice as well.

Apocalypse overall is a flawed but enjoyable film.
