This is probably the worst X-Men movie for a long time. It's over extended, boring and contains a lot of crappy realized scenes.

I understand that It takes place in the 80's but that artificial creation of the mood just don't fit. Colors are like from the disco or a 90s porn movie and stuff like Mortal Kombat costumes in Auschwitz are some kind of a sick joke.

But the worst thing are the scenes which take place in Poland. I'm from Poland and I can assure you we have laughed out loud of those. Actors trying to build up the mood in foreign language look just silly and I'm sure that's not the kind of atmosphere you want on the screen when drama takes place!

Also, the main villain is a mix of funny guy and some angry kid who can't even choose his companions wisely. But hey, he can do some mumbo jumbo with his hands and give some nice toys to his mates - so awesome.

I must admit tho', that the movie has some cool characters and decent scenes (Quicksilver rulez) but that's all. I can't recommend more in this long and rather dull performance of actors lost in their roles. Waste of money.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Awful, awful film. Watched the first two (of the new series) then this one and it's just putrid in compassion. The villain is lame beyond all hell (essentially a Power Rangers villain, but less menacing) and the Xmen are pathetic. Essentially NOTHING happens. Wait no, a town is destroyed. Some c-list Xman dies. Charles goes bald in the most dramatic way possible. And the plot holes holy jesus, there are far too many to count. My personal worst actor goes to Pyslock. She literally has one line in the film and then stands around doing jack. Truly a poor film and way worse then Xmen 3. Those giving it high scores are smoking crack. Expand

The movie was really utter crap. Nothing original to be seen.

Whilst I really liked days of future past, thought it to be stylish and well-paced, then this trainwreck really is very embarassing from the get-go. This is the 3rd movie in my life-time for which I was really holding myself back from throwing my popcorn and leaving the theater mid-film. Might as well had done that.

What's really infuriating is that Marvel and 20th Century Fox have this nonsensical grip on the press. How on earth do critics diss the well-done Warcraft movie and tolerate this one (though not saying much, because there's really nothing to praise here)?

It's the old "really bad guy from ancient times (Egypt) comes back and tries to take over the wooorld" trope, with that really being just it. Only action scenes after one another make for puke-inspiring pacing and some really horrific "few seconds of idyllic life, family gets killed, now Magneto is evil" crap tropes filled over all the scenes they spared some dialogue on.

Derp-faces all over.

Singer should be ashamed. I'm not at all confused as to why Jackman chose to ditch the franchise. It's becoming more and more a crap cash-grap with no shame.

Essentially it's aApocalypse gives us the first X-Men movie to feature a classic lineup of the characters coming together in their teenage years to fight evil under the guidance on Prof. Xavier while not being overshadowed by Wolverine. Essentially it's a close as we've gotten to the X-Men film we've all wanted for years now. However given how many steps forward the superhero movie genre has taken over the years, and Brian Singer's reliance on standard tropes, Apocalypse ends up being an odd mixture of better late than never, and too little, too late.

There's a lot to like about Apocalypse. We get the return of the great cast from First Class and DoFP like Fassbender and McAvoy, Sophie Turner's Jean Grey, Evan Peters continually enjoyable Quicksilver complete with more of those amazing super-speed action sequences, and it doesn't crap all over Cyclops. It's got some of the best portrayals of these X-Men characters we've seen onscreen so far. The interpretations still aren't perfect mind you. DoFP couldn't fix everything, so things like age and timeline discrepancies keep things from being just as every comic book fan wants to see it. Nothing short of a reboot of the series will fix that. However, this is still the best we've gotten so far in that department.

Given that Apocalypse seemingly does so much right by making good on the promise DoFP set the series up for, what keeps it from achieving greatness? That answer is simply that it's too familiar. With the MCU dominating theatres, the DCEU getting up and running, and the X-Men's own lengthy presence on the silver screen we've seen a lot of villains want to destroy the world. And quite frankly, they were more interesting than Apocalypse.

The movie just has a very bland villain. Plus we already know how the fight turns out, so Apocalypse just ends up coming off as some dude who isn't really a threat whose sole purpose is just to break stuff. Then there's how underdeveloped he is.

The action itself falls short as well. This is a bunch of special effects driven destruction. The likes of which we've seen in a lot of superhero films lately. Not even the constant display and barrage of these character's powers carries the same level of excitement as before. The action still isn't boring to watch, but it's certainly going through the established motions. Then there's the fact that a lot of these special effects look cheap and dated, particularly in the first half of the movie.

What hurts Apocalypse the most is simply superhero fatigue. Brain Singer and FOX do their best to give us the X-Men movie we should've received in the first place all those years ago. For the most part they succeed. The issue it's a little late to do that. The superhero genre has taken off and reached heights one could hardly believe. Going back to basics wounds them here. They got off to their post-DoFP timeline with a shaky start.

Does any of this mean Apocalypse is an outright bad movie? No, it's just behind the times. A flaw that's easier to forgive when you consider this is a close as we've come to that perfect X-Men lineup. There's a sort of classic X-Men feel to it and it's just nice to see a lot of the original characters like Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Storm get some real screen-time and actually take part in the action without Hugh Jackman's Wolverine hogging the spotlight. So yeah, it's the most admirable attempt at giving us the perfect X-Men movie that's sadly flawed in key areas. For some this simply isn't going to be enough. For others like myself this will still be a respectable and enjoyable movie. One that still manages to entertain for (finally!) exploring other, original X-Men. The series things to make up for, but it certainly looks like they're trying. The future still has the potential to be bright for these characters.

Apocalypse turned out to be a disappointing villain (though I feel like Oscar Isaac did the best he could with the material given), plot was fairly weak, ugly cg floating rubbish and I still think the mystique makeup on Jennifer Lawrence looks terrible. But overall I quite enjoyed the movie: Magneto had a great arc, I liked the new young versions of the x-men and quicksilver is awesome as ever (plus a cool cameo of you know who). Hopefully this will be Singers last chance at this franchise and it will be handed to someone with a fresh vision because it is creatively and artistically finished. It looks like audiences are getting sick of this s*** too judging by the ever diminishing returns. This is possibly the worst of the bad bunch of X-Men movies. Terrible baddie, terrible heroes. Fassbender is destroying his rep by being in garbage like this and Assassins Creed. He's such a good actor though, such shame. Movies like this are going some way to killing the genre. Please let this franchise die after Logan.
Moving forward I think Lord and Miller would make a good choice to re-boot X-Men. Burn everything that's been created so far to the ground and give them absolute creative control and we might be onto something.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie never failed to make me laugh at the very thought of the situation it was displaying and the dialogue it chose utilise. Problem of course being that is not a comedy movie. I am a big fan of the X Men prequels specifically, but I just have trouble understanding the motivation for a lot of the decisions made in this film. Why is Moira completely clueless? Why is she the one who accidently starts the apocalypse? Why doesn't anybody bother to name Erik's wife? Why were Erik's wife and daughter there, if only to be killed and not brought up again past act 1?

Somehow those decisions are not the worst part of Apocalypse. No, that definitely belongs to the category of decisions that have motivations, just either stupid or non storyline based ones. Ex: Moira being brought back into the story, which despite never being mentioned in Days of Future Past, was just because they needed to bring back Charles's obligatory female love interest. Why does Erik have a wife and child, if they don't even get a personality? Well, similar
ly, they just needed that sweet sweet domestically foiled character motivation. Why is Erik Peter's father? Gotta have that DRAMA. Why does Alex seemingly die? Maybe character motivation for Scott, though it didn't really seem like he needed any more. Stil I was having fun until one very particular decision was made in this movie:
How Charles Xavier lost his hair. But we’ll get back to that.

Moira MacTaggart was a completely unnecessary part of this film. Wanna know what she does throughout it? Goes “Wow” and “this is so cool”. In First Class, she at least had a personality, and she felt NEEDED to an extent for the story. Why is she here? Well Were just kinda supposed to believe that Charles has actually been hung up on her for, what, 15 years? Despite never mentioning her in Days of Future Past. First Class itself seemed to realise how unnecessary their relationship would be, sending Moira off with a wiped memory as a way out. We see this complete lack of necessariness in the very DRAMATIC moment where Charles gives Moira her memory back of the two of them. Memory being singular. Why? Oh, cause, y’know, they kissed one time. ONCE. For contrast, when Erik reminisces on his relationship with Charles, we are shown a whole two and half memories of them together, and the filmmakers don’t depict THEM of being in a relationship! MAKE IT MAKE SENSE! Moira could have never come up again and I would not have cared, I feel like most people wouldn’t have, but no, Charles needed that obligatory love interest, so we get Moira MacTaggart, who now has a child we’ve never seen, and is amazed by literally everything, which don’t even get me started on how THAT ruins the very bare bones of a character she had in First Class. Now I don't know if you know this, but Charles Xavier is bald in the non prequel films when he is old. Now any logical person would just (rightfully) assume he lost his hair naturally due to aging. But oh no, apparently the execs at Fox decided this was a fan theorised mystery that needed answers. "HOW DID CHARLES LOSE HIS HAIR?' you may have seen no Reddit thread titled ever, y'know, cause no one cared. Well! Answers my good people! Charles lost his hair because an ancient entity tried to take over his body! This makes no sense and ultimately solidifies this movie as a knee slapping comedy. When we see Apocalypse take over Oscar Isaac's body in the beginning, he is bald, but he is bald BEFORE apocalypse. Can apocalypse not exist in a body with hair? Why? How could Charles keep his eyebrows and stubble? Where did the hair go, it didn't fall out, it seems to turn to dust like everything else Apocalypse used his power on, why? Does apocalypse really hate hair that much? Did the filmmakers not realise how Mr. Clean like James McAvoy would look bald? Like yeah he's been bald in other movies bald that doesn't make it a good idea. WHY? DID? THEY? MAKE? HIM? BALD? Overall I had one take away: If I were any actor in this movie, I would be pissed. The performances are AMAZING, especially from James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, but it just can’t save this piece of garbage. Whether this was an introduction or a long awaited conclusion of sorts, no one deserved to be given this piece of trash to work in, except definitely Bryan Singer. I would say this film being as terrible as it is is most likely in part karma from the gods for Bryan Singer, any other explanation can not offer enough grounds for making THIS BAD of a film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Almost 180 million Dollars worth of bad cosplay and even worse dialogue. The only somewhat intriguing parts include the opening chapter, the final team line-up and introduction of the Danger Room, as well as a speedster's spectacular feats.

The most tragic event, Magneto's loss of his family, is cynically viewed as but a plot device to propel the story forward. And once again the horror of Ausschwitz is misappropriated by people who lack the intellectual ability to do anything enlightening with it.

A movie such as this, one featuring a multitude of newly-introduced "mutants" and warring ideologies, could only ever have succeeded with tight plotting, an intelligent script and confident production design. It lacks in all three accounts. Kinberg is a hack writer. Singer's propensity for casting young aspiring male actors is all the more troubling in light of the allegations of sexual misconduct that surround him.

The depiction of Arabs and Slavs is stereotypical, lacking in empathy, and all the more unfortunate seeing as how X-Men movies purport to deal with minority issues and xenophobia - though this cast of almost exclusively white heroes would suggest a white-washing of social issues, anyway.

Even the actors acknowledge that they're in a dud by phoning it in. Find another actor or actrice who hates their trademark franchise as much as Jennifer Lawrence hates X-Men at this point. Oscar Isaac is unrecognisable as the main villain, and gives an uninspiring performance. Rose Byrne is completely wasted, unfortunately. The only motivated actors would seem to be James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, and Magneto's tragic life makes him far too deep a character for this frequently campy film.

I lol'd hard at the sight of Wolverine's raggedy... jorts.

The MCU reboot can't come soon enough.

The dust has settled from “Days of Future Past”, and for many that might even be the best in the series. “X-Men: Apocalypse” might not surpass DoFP, but it’s still a fine film – for some. The focus is heavily on Magneto & Charles; meanwhile smaller characters are easily left out – development nor inside to them are neither presented in an acceptable amount. Our antagonist is a classic villain from the past but where’s the drama? Where’s the depth? Where’s the understanding? All he gives is destruction. But with destruction comes action; and Brian Singer once again shines with his direction, and Quicksilver. It’s an entertaining film with some clever humor here and there, but it’s not more than that. The plot is acceptable but it doesn’t really feel like an X-Men film. The focus is much more on the plot rather than on the characters — and the objective could have been much better presented; there isn’t a strong want-to for the success of our heroes. A somewhat predictable story and a lack of creativeness is another aspect. But it’s still an enjoyable ride into the world of our beloved heroes – even though the majority are very underdeveloped. It’s no fair comparison against DoFP, and it’s not a bad movie – but not exemplary either.

I could see a lot of the problems they had with the film. The beginning was trying to weave together too many threads and none of them were particularly strong. The special effects are kind of suspect and the title villain is by far the weakest part of the film. William Stryker was a more interesting villain than Apocalypse in the film and he had about 2 minutes of screen time.

The whole production was still a lot of fun though. The film started off weak, but as soon as you see Quicksilver, the film starts to perk up. He is once again the best part of the film and balances out extremely uneven performances from some of my otherwise favorite actors like Oscar Issac and Michael Fassbender. Quicksilver steals every scene he’s in but they still keep him in balance with the other characters. Sophie Turner also has terrific screen presence and I look forward to seeing this actress come into her own.

Part of the reason I enjoyed the film was that it had just so many comic characters and nods to avid comic readers. Yet, this both hurts and helps. Seeing Caliban on screen was pretty great, but the true to the comic outfit for Psylocke (Apocalypse too) made her look extremely out of place in every scene she was in. While I like that they went for it, all of the other Horsemen get practical armor and she is just wearing the least practical thing available and it’s just all you can look at every time she’s on screen.

I would recommend this movie if you’re a fan of the film series and the comics, but otherwise I would stay away from it because it is going to be not only confusing, but what works about the movie probably will not work for you.

There are at least five origin stories being told (or retold) in this movie and they are all done in such a convoluted, slapdash way that not only does it ruin this movie; it ruins my appreciation of previous efforts. Strangely enough not being a fan of this series kind of helps the viewer because they really can't see how badly things were screwed up. I was really determined to ignore the critics on this one but frankly I think they weren't harsh enough in their criticism. Expand

It is the least correct level film editing this trilogy, is more fantasy than science fiction, but at the same time is the closest to comics and delivers some great action scenes.

Sigh. ***SPOILERS***
- Terrible directing. Dialogue comes out stilted and unnatural, with awkward performances from much of the cast.
- Story? Not really bothering with one. Side-stories concerning the characters? Started and then just dropped. Completely dropped.
- Nonsense changes from the outcome of the last movie. Charles erased Moira's memories of the last event. For no apparent reason. At all. Also... it was basically rape. Mind/memory rape... and everyone seems to think it's just cute and funny that he did that. It's not. It's horrific.
- They don't seem to understand the powers of the characters in the movie... even after establishing them. Nightcrawler can't go through a wire cage. No, he can't go "through" electrical current-areas now. It's... beyond unclear and doesn't make sense. He teleports, director, he doesn't "go through" things. That's why he can appear in *places he knows well without having to see it, you explained his powers in the movie yourself*. It's one thing to just change the way a character's powers work... it's another to go out of your way to explain how they work and then actively work against your own explanation.
- People were upset, in the past, how poorly the Phoenix Saga was represented. Well, the director has listened to our complaints, and straight-up ignored them. Same thing's going on with Jean, she's just crazypants.
- Writer 1: "Darn, we ceded too much power to our villain and he has control of Prof. X... what do we do with the story now?"
Writer 2: "Just magically give him the power to fight the villain out of nowhere for what is clearly no good reason except that we don't know where to go with this".
Then he's easily defeated, anyway, and that part of the fight is rendered not only non-nonsensical but pointless, as well.
- Think Beast is a cool character? Meh, he's just some scientist for most of the movie, and is only beast near the end. Oh, the **** version, not an interesting version. Enjoy.
- Wolverine shows up, and mostly kills some people off-camera before disappearing. One okay spot in the movie. Then he's gone.
- Prof. X knows that he's teaching a kid, Cyclops, to use his powers and that uncontrollable, powerful lasers come out of his eyes. So they set up beside a pond and have him shoot at a target by a big tree. The tree is destroyed. Prof X puts the kid on a big guilt trip about how his great grandfather planted that tree and it was his favourite spot in all the world. **** you, Xavier, the kid had a blindfold on because of his laser eyes, and you set him up to shred your favourite thing, then blamed him.

To hell with this movie. Again, this director has zero respect for the source material. No, really, I'm not making that up. He BANNED all comic books from the sets of the X-Men movies.

It starts off at a fine pacing with several pieces of subplots to reintroduce the old members, decently surface the villain but due to overloading of stories to tell, there's a lot of flaws especially at the final act as well as some underdeveloped new characters. The story still focuses on the three main characters - Xavier (Professor X), Erik (Magneto) and Raven (Mystique), all deliver promisingly just as previous installments that leads to a very engaging chemistry together with powerful scores by John Ottman, visually stunning effects and a number of fun moments delivered by both Professor X and Quicksilver (although the latter seems to steal the attention much better in two major scenes). The theme of hope might not be quite resonant this time and it might not be the best entry in the trilogy but overall it's more humanly emotional engaging and certainly one of the quite successful superhero trilogy reboot. The film does take some time to get rolling but I felt invested in most of the characters that were on the screen. This is because First Class and Days of Future past did such a wonderful job of setting certain characters up. McAvoy and Fassbender reprise their roles as Professor X and Magneto. Their chemistry is still strong and a great source of emotional investment. Jennifer Lawrence returns as Raven (Mystique) along with other familiar faces like Beast, Havoc, and Quicksilver. Quicksilver once again has a wonderful scene and I would go so far as to say it may even be better than the one in DoFP.

The villain Apocalypse is imposing and feels like a proper threat. To avoid spoilers, as the movie progresses the stakes are exponentially raised. His ensemble of disciples or 'four horsemen' so to speak are just kind of there and seem like they exist because the plot demands it. The only character of these four that receives any form of proper characterization is Fassbender's Magneto. The additions of characters like Angel, Psylocke and Storm feel a bit like they were thrown together in a hurry. Apparently there is another popular X-men character in the film that I completely missed.

Nightcrawler along with Quicksilver add some nice moments of levity. This levity balances out the destruction that happens elsewhere in the film. The score and visual effects are quite nice as well.

Apocalypse overall is a flawed but enjoyable film.

Fourth superhero movie in, and we are only just over half way there. 'X-Men: Apocalypse' is a dark, threatening, and sometimes deliberately paced story. The movie begins somewhere in Egypt where we see En Sabah Nur who used to rule Ancient Egypt, until he is betrayed by his worshippers, and they try to stop him, but his four loyal men die trying to preserve him.

We cut to 1983, and it seems that the mutants we know as "X-Men" are still going their separate ways. We see that Erik aka "Magneto" (Michael Fassbender) is living a happy life with his partner and daughter. Charles aka "Professor X" (James McAvoy) is taking charge of his school for gifted mutants with Beast (Nicholas Hoult) also looking after the school.

Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) is still looking for new mutants and comes across a teleporting mutant who goes by the name "Nightcrawler" (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who she takes to Charles' school. Havok (Lucas Till) is back as well, and is concerned for his younger brother Scott (Tye Sheridan) as he cannot control this dangerous laser beam that emerge from his open eyes. Havok decides its time that he goes to Charles' school where he can learn to control these powers. This is also where Scott meets Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), who is having trouble sleeping as she can see/predict the end of the world, which will be caused by Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac).

There is a lot of this plot to talk about, but to avoid spoiling it, I'm just going to talk about the things that worked and the things that didn't work. What worked the most was the story, I found myself invested in the somewhat scary story of Apocalypse and how he plans on bringing the end of the world, along with his allies including; Magneto, Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy) and Psylocke (Olivia Munn). I also liked the more darker and violent tone of the movie, probably the darkest since 'X2: X-Men United' (2003), and it is a very trippy experience, especially towards the final battle at the end of the movie.

Oscar Isaac is great as Apocalypse, he seems menacing, he blends in fully to the role, and when he screams, his voice is convincing enough to lead you to believe that he is truly Apocalypse.

Evan Peters returns as Quicksilver, the fast and zippy mutant we all loved from 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (2014), he has another scene stealing moment, and it's arguably better than from the previous movie.

James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender also commit to their roles as Xavier and Magneto, you still believe their tested friendship, and the way that they seem so drifted apart because of the different things they go through, it's almost heartbreaking when you see what happens with Magneto.

What didn't work would be the pacing, this is a very unevenly paced movie...but it isn't as disjointed as 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (2016), nor does it use all of its characters to their full potential like 'Captain America: Civil War' (2016). There are some mutants, mostly Angel and Psylocke, who aren't seen as much, and they're not as fully fleshed out as I would have wanted them to be.

The stand-out performance here is 'Game of Thrones' star Sophie Turner as Jean Grey...she commits 100% to her role, and she is definitely memorable in her performance.

All in all, 'X-Men: Apocalypse' may not be 'X2: X-Men United' (2003) or 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (2014), but it is definitely nowhere near the poor quality of 'X-Men: The Last Stand' (2006) and 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' (2009) (a movie I don't like to mention), and certainly nothing like the abysmal 'Fantastic Four' (2015) (a big mistake from Fox). Bryan Singer does what he can with this movie, and at least 70% of the time, he's succeeded. It's better than you would expect.

I was really scared because of the disappointing reviews and boy could I tell you, I absolutely loved nearly every single second of it. It's not a perfect movie but it really has a great script and action sequences. There were so many characters that were fantastic and just the idea of the mutants amazes me. I thought the villain, Apocalypse, was great in this film and he was intense at times. I personally thought the best scenes were either at Xavier's school or in the Egypt area. Man is 2016 rocking it with those superhero movies. The only thing I could say slightly negative about this film was the film length as it was a bit too long, just like any Marvel movie. If you loved X-Men:Days of Future Past (I didn't particularly love that film, but it was okay), then you should like this movie. Go see it and support it as my theater had less people watching this than Captain America: Civil Warm, yet still being nearly full. I really hope this film does well and I look forward to watching it again in DVD. (98/100) Expand

It felt nice having a villain other than Magneto as the central protagonist but with that said, I expected more from Apocalypse. Also, a few more minutes of his backstory would not have hurt the movie time wise at all. It was also a relief not having Wolverine as the focal point and rather reduced to a cameo/action scene. The acting from the cast is surely not Oscar worthy but they get the job done. All in all, if you're looking for an enjoyable movie with a decent story then check this out. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I must say that this movie is definitely fun to watch for core comic book fans, and fans of the X-Men cinematic universe. However, as a casual moviegoer, there lies quite a few problems, rendering it to mixed reviews and being the second lowest rated film (on Rotten Tomatoes) in the entire series. There weren't enough fights between the X-Men and Apocalypse, who again, sounded repetitive and boring most of the time. A lot of key X-Men themes were touched on and never explored again in the film. There was an obvious focus on the future of the X-Men series, rather than the Apocalypse they're facing now. It just didn't seem like the end of the world was near, and that is where my main problem lies with this movie. The inevitable comparisons to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War places this movie right in the middle. Apocalypse definitely accomplished more than Batman v Superman but it didn't deliver as well as Civil War did. All in all, X-Men: Apocalypse is a must see movie. This movie's greatest asset was that its plot was well-defined from start to finish. There were a few 'bumps', such as the nature of Apocalypse's power transfer and his own backstory, but all-in-all it was carried across very well.

Unlike past movies, where focus was given to specific characters like Wolverine or Mystique, this one spread itself across a plethora of characters in excellent form. It also combined several subplots which developed alongside the main one; Jean's burdening powers, Storm's admiration for Mystique, Magneto's loss of his family, and Quicksilver's dilemma of telling the truth to Magneto. Apocalypse's views on the modern world were surprisingly developed, even the little details such as him needing to learn the modern language. While his motives and backstory were a tad weak, within the movie his desires were full, from wanting Xavier's powers as his own to his own narcissistic lack of care for his followers.

Unlike some of the past X-Men movies where the climax has been rushes or unsatisfactory this one pulled a complete home run with their rendition of the iconic "Rise of the Phoenix" element that was much awaited by fans of the original storylines. Sophie Turner managed to not just fill the shoes left by Famke Janssen, but also stand on her own as Jean Grey's storyline grew from what had been set in stone in previous movies.

The diversity of its characters was one of its strongest points. Even for those with minor roles there was depth and remarkably strong parallels to the original characters, from Nightcrawler, the inexperienced kid wanting to be accepted, to Storm, whose desire to be a hero overruled her loyalty to a cruel overlord. For what small elements it may have lacked in early beginning it made up for later on.

All in all, a truly remarkable movie and a perfect follow-up to the strong story of Days of Future Past. By far one of the best movies of the year.

Quicksilver, Psylocke, Angel, NightCrawler, Havok, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm. These are all characters that we met in the film but were not explained at all or nearly enough for anyone to care about them. Psylocke (Olivia Munn) looked great. Ok, she looked like Olivia Munn cosplaying as Psylocke which if you know Olivia Munn isn't actually that amazing, since it's sorta her thing. However, I can't recall her having more than a couple of lines in the film and most of the time she was just standing around as a background lackey. Not much different from Storm and Angel, the other so-called "four horsemen" of Apocalypse (the 4th being Magneto). At some point in the film Quicksilver randomly shows up and does something super cool....the best sequence of the film actually.....but unfortunately as a result of what happened, someone who is supposed to be a major character but didn't get any film time died. I'm shedding a tear as we speak. Of course, this film is called "X-men: Apocalypse" and so if I didn't talk about the blue guy himself, it just wouldn't be right. Ah, Apocalypse. What the hell happened to you? People who don't read X-Men comics, read the following words carefully: Apocalypse is one of the scariest mofos in the Marvel Universe. He is a villain that causes superheroes to crap their pants when he shows up looking to cause trouble. This is a guy who is so evil, so powerful, so insane...that he has tortured and massacred some of the most well known X-Men in the past and literally changed the entire timeline of the Marvel Universe for awhile (see Age of Apocalypse). Now, with that in mind, WTF was Singer thinking when he gave us....this....this....ugly blue guy in horrible looking samurai armor? This film's Apocalypse is nothing compared to the Apocalypse of the Marvel Universe. This film's Apocalypse looks like a mutant Smurf that's been drinking one too many potions in Gargamel's laboratory. He's small, he's puny, he's ridiculous. I did not feel like the X-Men were in danger when I saw him on screen. Everytime I saw him, I couldn't help but laugh. He didn't strike fear or terror or make me anxious to see what happens next. All I could think about was how stupid he looked and acted. Ooooh, I'm going to destroy the world and rebuild it the way I like. Great plan, buddy. Because 20,000 villains before you haven't had the same plan and pulled it off successfully, right? That's not Apocalypse's M.O. And the way that they defeated him. Really? This isn't a spoiler by the way. I mean it's an "X-Men" movie. Obviously the X-Men are going to win, right? But the way he was defeated was so ridiculous and so easy compared to what other things the X-Men have gone up against that it was a total waste of time for them and completely negated any idea that Apocalypse was powerful and menacing in the first place. C'mon, Singer if you're going to churn out crap like this then man up and give the property back to Marvel so they can atleast do something respectable with it. Expand

That was quick, now on to the negatives. The CG in this film is atrocious and extremely distracting. I dont know what happened but many of the 3d models looked unfinished especially their textures. They surfaces look too perfect and the effects from powers like Magneto looked very cheesy as well.

Next, Apocalypse is about 5 feet tall and his armor looks life foam... the quality of costumes and makeup for his character were a travesty and reminded me of the kind of stuff you see in low budget TV shows like Dr. Who. The only thing he had going for him was his synthesized voice.

Next, this was a sort of origins type story for the prominent X-Men but it strays a bit from the comics. This is fine and well if the origins made sense, but they didnt. For instance, Storm is depicted as an Arab with a Mohawk running around Egypt stealing and living on the streets. Well lets assume for a second that all that is believable, the question is why in blazes does she just use wind or other powers to take what she wants? She clearly had the powers already, yet she still got her hands dirty for almost no reason.

Then we have Quicksilver (again) who is basically a God but somehow manages to be completely useless (yet again) despite having the power to pretty much end the story on his own. For instance, he could have found Charles and ran him to another continent during the showdown but instead he decides to go meet daddy because you know... he couldnt make time for both... oh wait... yea he could have. He could have saved Charles, plucked all the feathers off Angel, stripped Psylocke to her panties, shaved Storms head, grabbed a Cappuccino from Starbucks and he still would have had time to spare to talk to daddy... but no... instead he decides to go talk to dad and then go and fight Apocalypse. And then there is the fight... he could have skewered Apocalypse with 1000 shiesh kabobs, lit his feet on fire, teabagged him a few times, and then severed his head with a butter knife but nope... what does he do? Slaps him a few times and punches him in the gut... whatever.

Next we have Charles who was basically worthless despite being able to control pretty much anyone he wants. At any time, he could have controlled any of the horsemen but instead he just sat around useless crying for help. Jean was also practically worthless until she "let go" and allowed her powers out which meant, we got to see a glimpse of the Phoenix again (yay... not). In the movies she has become a one trick pony because the movie writers think this is all she is good for. Oh what else... at least the didnt mess up Scotts part then again he didnt really do much anyway except mow down a door.

Just a lot of wasted action and I have played 15 year old video games with better CG than this.

The film suffers from a plethora of problems, and struggles to limp through which is shocking considering how great Days of Future Past was. X-Men: Apocalypse is entertaining, but suffers from terrible special effects and post production, and a very weak villain. The most sad thing about this film is that it had so much potential to be great, and just took a long walk off a short pier.
The biggest advantage this film has going for it is it’s super talented cast, who show up and give it their all, despite a weak script. Lawrence, McAvoy, and Fassbender all make this film as entertaining as they can, and the action sequences are fun to watch. However, the script has serious problems, many of which are too hard to overcome. Put frankly the story isn’t well crafted at all, it’s choppily thrown together more resembling a set of disconnected scenes following each other not a story.
The film’s biggest crux is it’s special effects and post production. This may sound odd, but they are, in some cases, so bad that they are distracting. The dialogue is one major problem, as clearly there was a lot of ADR (Automatic Dialogue Replacement) or dubbing, and it often doesn’t match the lips or doesn’t sound like the actor has the rest of the movie. Above that the special effects, whether practical or digital, looks bad. The CGI isn’t very good, the sets are noticeable and flat, Apocalypse’s makeup is obvious, not very good, and distracting.
On that note Apocalypse, the titular character is one of the movie’s biggest weaknesses. Noted as one of the comic’s coolest villains with an unflinching belief in darwinism, the film’s villain more represents a shell of that. Oscar Isaac isn’t the problem, as he gives the performance his best effort, but the character has weak motivations at best, and isn’t all that menacing or memorable. A product of a lazily crafted script where the character that binds it all together has no real dimensions and is essentially a flat shell of a cooler idea.
It’s ironic that Fox spent almost 200 million making Apocalypse, and spent just under 60 million on Deadpool, a far superior film. The best way to describe X-Men: Apocalypse is a mixed bag, because it’s not a terrible movie, but it’s not a very good movie either, it’s just mediocre. The film is obviously the product of a poorly crafted script, which is a shame, because it could have, and thus should have, been better.

Not a great X-men movie but a good watch. I enjoyed the 3D aspects and, as always, the slowdown musical interludes.

I wanted this to love up to First Class but it fell just short.

none of these films are X-Men films. Bryan Singer does a really good job of making a team of approachable super heroes for a mainstream audience. Unfortunatley that team is not the true X-Men.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished watching it and I didn't even realise that it took 2.5h.

I'm not a diehard x-men fan and just occasionally watch these marvel movies as they come out, so my opinions about the movie are of a casual movie goer.

The movie doesn't need a "complicated" story like the Days of Future Past had to be good. A simple good vs evil is nice break from all that once in a while. Here we had a simple, but well working story.
The main villain is introduced and his powers are explained well ahead of time before he actually appears doing anything, but the intro is absolute gold.

I just felt that Apocalypse didn't really do anything really evil. He killed a dozen of normal people.
Magneto was ripping everything around the world apart. Apocalypse shot nukes into the space.
Wolverine killed a bunch of soldiers. Apocalypse enhanced Storms powers.

One of this year’s 437 superhero movies, X-Men: Apocalypse, has given audiences around the world a reason to put down the pitchforks aimed at Fox for not selling the rights to Marvel, and to grab a bucket of popcorn instead.
I would be wrong to make the practical costumes not my first glowing remark about this movie; seeing the actor’s faces and not a digital puppet made for great, and unfortunately unique experience. Oscar Issac stole the show with his performance as the titular villain, which was made all the better by it actually being his performance. While James Spader’s performance as Ultron in Age of Ultron was great, the fact I was looking at a cartoon did take away from it. By going with practical costumes X-Men solved a common problem and hopefully paved a way for future blockbusters to follow in their wake.
Oscar Issac wasn’t the only actor who delivered an amazing performance, all of the cast on a whole did. Michael Fassbender as Magneto gave a deep and sorrowful performance that could pull tears out of a statue. Sophie Turner has given me great hope for a Dark Phoenix storyline in the future, and Jame McAvoy continued to fill the shoes I thought no one could fill after Sir Patrick Steward left the role.
There were two characters in the movies whose amount a screen time shocked me, Olivia Munn’s Psylocke and Evan Peter’s Quicksilver. Quicksilver was given a much more important role than I had assumed, which was a great surprise. He was the comedic relief in the movie and unlike with most recent blockbusters he managed to not be cheesy and to be comedic, what a relief. As in Days of Future Past there was a long and incredible sequence with the silver speedster, this one better than the last; it might be worth the price of admission just for that one part.
I was disappointed that Olivia Munn’s character was as underutilized as it was. Seeing her do as many interviews as she did led me to assume she would of had a bigger role than “pose a couple of times and say this one thing.” Psylocke wasn’t the only character left underdeveloped; Angel and Storm both left me wanting more. While I understand that the movie was packed and that not every character could get a far reaching character arc it would have been nice to get to know these characters more intimately before the standard last act fight sequence.
After the climatic final fight and the dust settled the heroes returned home to their destroyed home, and I finally got to see something that I always wanted to see: the mansion being rebuilt. While it may sound stupid I always wanted to see how the mansion kept being rebuilt after the many times it’s been destroyed, and finally seeing it should’ve made me leave the theatre with a smile on my face.
What took that smile away from me was the post-credit sequence; for the past couple of years now my hatred of them has grown exponentially, it’s to the point that I prefer the Stan Lee cameos over them. This particular waste of time had no dialogue, was as vague as possible, and over in a flash. This will be the last one I wait through ten minutes of credits for and not just pull up on Youtube when I get home.
This movie grossly surpassed my expectations. Director Bryan Singer has once again delivered a fresh break from the Marvel cinematic factory with a movie that, despite its flaws, I’m sure I will watch again.

This movie its a great addition to the "new franchise" of x-men movies. It was fun, it was entertaining, and it left me felling like I should watch it again in Imax just to get the full impact of the awesome fight scenes and brutal finale. The movie is a bit long being two hours and a half, but it doesn’t feel a second short or long. I enjoyed every moment of it from the action, jokes, and character development.
It feels a bit more like Xmen First class, because it introduces a new team, and tries to develop each member a bit. I understand that it may be hard to follow, but having the limited knowledge I have about the franchise I didn’t felt lost or as if the movie was going too fast to understand. All the characters seemed to have their purpose and motivation. Visually it had great CGI and makeup, the acting was great.
It was a good movie, and one I wouldn't mind paying to see again.

Psylocke and Jubilee in particular felt entirely wasted.

Nightcrawler along with Quicksilver add some nice moments of levity. This levity balances out the destruction that happens elsewhere in the film. The score and visual effects are quite nice as well.

Apocalypse overall is a flawed but enjoyable film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Critics are not too harsh! This movie might have a few great moments and the X-Men are well portrayed but in general the movie does not contain a plausible storyline and I never really felt any emotional connections to any of the characters. The fact that a movie uses special effects well is not nearly enough to produce a great movie. One of my main issues is the villain itself. He spends half the movie creating new fancy looking pieces of armor for his randomly picked "powerful" followers and therefore was neither credible nor menacing in any way. I enjoyed Deadpool, loved Civil Wars but I would not recommend watching this movie. Expand

There have been some great films like Days of Future Past, and some pretty bad ones like X-Men Origins, and and I dear say this falls towards the bad side. Boasting a great cast, led by James McEvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, and some great characters, this movie ends up being an underwhelming and very frustrating film. However, it also manages to spice up some memorable moments, in particular, a scene involving Quicksilver (you probably have an idea of what I'm talking about).

The movie lacks in several areas, with one standing out the most being the plot. The plot is very simple yet bloated at the same time. At times, it starts to get confusing. Another downside is the misuse of some of the cast, in particular, Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. Apocalypse doesn't seem the least bit menacing or frightening, and Jennifer Lawrence, who feels much underused in the context of the story. Only to add to some of the negatives, some of the other characters feel very forgettable, such as Angel and Psylocke. In all honesty, they weren't very much interesting

The final battle was good, though a little underwhelming, which had the occasional wince of bad CGI. Magneto's transformation was by far the best of all the characters, and probably one of the only sides of the story you can get emotionally involved in. Fassbender did really well in his performance, especially given he had quite a change in character throughout the movie. McEvoy, as usual, was great as Professor X, and some of the young newcomers proved they are capable of being part of a massive blockbuster. It's a movie worth watching as it is fun and enjoyable ride, but make sure you enter with low expectations.

And yet, my feelings leaving the theater were just so-so. The visuals are great, though as always in these films, some moments are very obviously CG. The story was just okay - nothing very original or creative. They didn't try to stretch themselves at all when it came to the plot or dialogue. Also, the action largely wasn't very satisfying. With few exceptions, I feel like Singer doesn't know how to make combat with these kinds of powers interesting. In fact, in combat, most of the characters seem to forget what their powers really are.

On the plus side, the characters are fun and well portrayed. Watching them interact with each other and have a good time is a delight! Quicksilver outdoes himself. As amusing as he was in DoFP, he's much better here! And the young X-Men do an excellent job as replacements for their older versions (some are even better).

Anyway, it's worth seeing, but it's far less than it could be.

I am by no means a superhero fan, in fact, aside from Batman and the X-Men, I really don't care, but as someone who has been into X-Men since he was a kid, and seen just about everything, the day it came out, I really can't understand all the bad reviews and the complaints about violence towards women! This film has been called the worst X-Men film ever, nothing is worse than Last Stand, and as far as violence towards woman goes, there has always been fight scenes and there have always been male and female characters involved, in fact, X-Men has always received high praise for included female characters as equals, since the very beginning, so what is it, they aren't allowed to lose a fight? As far as the film goes, the story was terrific, the action sequences and special effects just continue to get better, and the introduction of Cyclopes (Tye Sheridan) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-Mcfee) into the prequel cast just made everything that much better. Without giving anything away, I will say that my one knock on the film would be in the ending. There was so much build-up around the character of Apocalypse and so much talk about how powerful he was. Half the film follows him as he gains power and puts his plan together, but the final battle, that determines the outcome of the film, didn't take very long at all. There was all this hype and build up to this ultimate battle, that could determine the fate of the world, and when it happened, the fans were left scratching their heads by how quickly it ended. Hopefully it was all done with a purpose, and we'll find out why in whatever comes next, but as it stands now, the ending of the film was extremely anti-climatic, besides that, I loved it! Apocalypse might not have been as good as First Class or Days of Future Past, but it certainly wasn't a stinker on the level of Last Stand, the way that most critics portrayed it to be. Expand

I think its time to let X-Men lie for a decade before we come back to it again.

Not much to say other than that, but for people that don't see how obviously stupid this film is let me explain to you why. Actors were bored out of their minds and it showed in every single scene. The script is full of hyperbole and couldn't amuse a child. The cinematography and over all visual style lacked detail and originality and all too often it came off looking like a cartoon. The CGI that permeated almost every single scent made the film look cheap, despite the film costing an insane amount of money. They could have saved a lot of money and gone with stop motion animation and miniatures and it would have looked way better. The characters are all one dimensional and very boring. The film over and over attempted to force you to feel something with visuals and music, instead of having a story and a script that would actually make you feel something. The emotional manipulation was extremely obvious and cheesy beyond belief. I think the real issue is that they are trying to get new viewers, they are catering to the young adult crowed, instead of making a film for the original fans, who are all in their 30s and 40s, who would demand something more sophisticated and emotionally real. This young adult genre of films is a huge cash cow, but ultimately produces nothing worth anyone's time. Don't waste your brain cells on this producer driven shell of a film. Expand

As always, The growing and experienced cast does a great job. That being said, I've grown tired of this series. They recycled a lot of content from previous films and it made this film suffer quite a bit. The only thing good about this movie is that it helps set up moving away from other characters.

Jackman is retiring as Wolverine and by going into the past for new stories, They can explore more while leaving out the character that really made the series what it is. I think Turner is a nice replacement for Lawrence as well, Who's contract has expired and it doesn't seem like she is going to re-new it. Mystique has grown stale and by re-introducing Jean through the very talented Turner, You get a near even swap while also giving fans a familiar character that you can explore the backstory of.

The film as a whole is ok. It's a little bit better than The Wolverine but compared to Days of Future Past and First Class, It's dead last.

I enjoyed X-Men Apocalypse for the most part as an X-Men fan but I had to admit it was a flawed movie. It tries to balance a lot of plots and characters and I don’t think it handled it as well as Captain America Civil War. The performances are mostly good especially Fassbender and I liked the action scenes and I thought the plot was ok. However there are a few underdeveloped charters and plots and as a whole it feels a bit underwhelming at times. It’s ok but I wouldn’t mind if this is the final movie cause this franchise is kinda running dry now and there’s only so much more of the source material to work with. Though I would be willing to return for another sequel which is planned at this time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I avoided reviews, even non-spoiler reviews before seeing the movie. I was excited to see the third installment but had little to no major expectations after the BvS incident (I disliked BvS very much, firstly because I expected more of an Injustice approach but eventually ended up disliking it because it did not convince me that that's how characters I knew would react in the provided situations; but I digress...).

I felt like the movie was not worth watching at all (my opinion... but this is my account, therefore relevant). Even though I liked First Class more than Days of Future Past, I loved what they did story-wise to Magneto in the sense that the character continued the story from where it was left off, though in the case of Apocalypse, I felt like the character was just introduced with, I don't know, am I supposed to think it was Polaris, his offspring, in his new exposition drama? I was thinking to myself: "Give this guy a break!", I mean not even Joss Whedon is this cruel to his characters over a hypothetical three movie-length series. Little to no dialogue on the supporting characters paired with little to no tension throughout the whole movie made me wonder when will the trailer will end and the movie begin. I felt that the editing did not focus on the story, and by this I mean that I felt that everything was predictable (the scenes were not transitioned in a way to make you wonder or to properly explain the situations, it felt like a roller coaster of unnecessary, poor and recursive exposition and action scenes); from the self-referential jokes about the third one in the series, to the Return of the Jedi twist that macguffinly presented a way for the good guys to win (the bad guy's apprentice turns on the bad guy because his son is in hurt by him, which I believe, is now a trope).

All in all it's a good story for a four to six part comic book story, but not enough for a movie to create a convincing scenario for an audience like myself (see there, I distracted a general criticism to emphasize on my point of view because critics don't make a movie good or bad, we all evaluate them more or less, but I believe that the more critical we become we encourage quality, but that's like the good side of something and it's completely subjective and all in all it's pointless... GODS, do I digress? Yes! Yes, I do.

And I just did again.). Where is the reactionary feedback from the humans? How come Apocalypse just picks Psylocke because she's there, and moreover, where's her character? How come we don't establish Storm better? Why does Sophie Turner look like she's waiting to be directed more than embodying the character she's supposed to portray in a more vivid way(I mean, I know she doesn't fully control her abilities and all, but she seems to be stuck aside from her "Watch this, I can make us like we're not here gimmick.")? Why do we focus on the same "Oh, Professor X stands for this, and Magneto is just too radical!" crap? I mean over the span of three movies I guess that I expected something, but only after feeling disappointed for SOME REASON when the movie was over.

Just to be sure I clarified: I did not go in wishing this movie to suck. I did not have high expectations for it as a new installment in a superhero movie franchise. I just feel like it fell short of being a good movie. I don't think it was bad. I think it was mediocre and with some technical flaws. But that doesn't make the movie less enjoyable unless you feel it's boring you. And that's what I felt. A redundant approach towards characters over a plate of mix of good and bad CG effects (by my appreciation, here's an example of what I mean: Psylocke's effects were awesome but the whole tearing Cairo asunder felt like a video game cut-scene from the 2000 and by that I don't mean necessarily bad, but completely breaking immersion from the rest of the action).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Again Fox does the same thing over and over again, which is ruin their and mess up their timelines. I mean this movie just basically cancelled all the events that took place in the first trilogy. If this is a younger version of Storm,Jean,Scott then how did they all meet nightcrawler, i mean in the first trilogy Jean and Storm didn't meet him until after he attacked the white house, now suddenly Fox decided no it's time to change that. Another Example, this is third time they tell you how wolverine got his adamantium claws, the first was in X2, then in Origins Wolverine now this, and if Jean and Scott supposedly meet him when they were young, THEN HOW ON EARTH DIDN'T HE RECOGNIZE THEM IN X-Men 1 while they were older and same goes for them, and don't say memory loss because he already had undergo ed the experiment.

In general, i just found this movie and excuse for Bryan Singer to continue doing X-Men movies, all he does is change Wolverines past and ruin the timelines, i hope that after Wolverine 3 Fox sell the X-Men back to Marvel because they will just continue to ruin the X-Men
