That aside, the plot of the movie was fine [Dark and gritty in a Sin City-esque way].... nothing mind blowing and actually mostly took a back seat to the individual characters themselves... but at least the story remained unpredictable to the end so that's good. Really for me the star of this movie isn't the plot, but rather two characters (even if at times they are overdone): Dr. Manhattan (his presence alone on camera commands God-like "oohs" and "ahhs") and the psycho that was Warshack, both of whom who could have warranted a movie of their own. The other masked "heroes" unfortunately were just bleh and really didn't carry the same character complexities to warrant much deep thought or attention. Definitely recommend at least one viewing... two on the other hand? That's debatable. Expand

So, I won't belabour that perspective. Here's the important part of the flick you might have missed: a nerd has an office place accident which leaves him with a barrel chest, washboard abs and a large penis. Wow! I want to know which office that guy works in! Ok, he's a little short on tan, well, in fact, he is blue but, hey, I'm a nerd and I want to have an office place accident which will leave me with a physique which even Laurie Juspeczyk gawks at. This mishap near the water cooler is the quintessential superhero fodder: the nerd is, after all, Superman. Perhaps we like this because it makes us, the powerless, feel empowered. How many CEO's with a gaggle of concubines and a wad of millions in their wallets go to see superhero movies? These movies are for us, the powerless, to feel better. Only, this movie does not quite do that. If superheroes existed in the real world, then this is how it would be: we ordinary humans are, as Dr. M said, little more than termites to a superbeing. Deep stuff. If there had been less blood in this film, I would have given it a 10. The blood detracted unnecessarily from what was originally a good tale by Alan Moore et al. Expand

I've always been a fan of the graphic novel and consequently I understood the back-stories, histories and ideals behind the movie. However, I can also see how people who haven't read the novel could quite easily find themselves lost within the various layers and story arcs. I did find the character development not as involving as the comics, but that was only to be expected within the time constraints of a feature film. It's one of those movies that will make more sense the second or third time of watching, when you can pick up on the little intricacies that are woven into the plot. Very enjoyable if you've read the graphic novel or can stay focused for the full 160 odd minutes. A mention has to go to the brilliant performance by Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach too. Expand

Ultimately, you have to sit through a lengthy movie for some key scenes, but it's well worth it. Someone needs to tell the producers of comic book movies that the default comic book flick should be 1:45 minutes, not 3 hours. You aren't making Schindler's list here, your filming a schoolboys daydream. It ISN'T important, and doesn't deserve 3 hours.

Also, how can you complain about a movie being 163 minutes when movies like Titanic and the Godfather are longer and supposedly two of the best movies ever made? When I plop down $9 for a movie ticket, I WANT it to be long, especially when it's material that I'm 90% sure I'll enjoy. I'm not one for scenes of gore and brutality, and I could have done without that. But overall, this was a great movie that did the novel justice. There is not much action for nearly three quarters of this 3 hour film. The plot of this film is very heavy handed, and thought provoking, but not for everyone. The writing of this movie is some of the best I've seen in recent years, and the acting for the most part compliments the acting excellently. I've never read the novel, but my friend who I saw it with says that they lifted most of the dialog directly from the book which was a great idea. No need to reinvent the subject matter that was portrayed so perfectly in the book. Overall, this is an excellent movie. I took away one point because the plot is a little dialog heavy and may bore certain people (but not me, I was refreshed actually to the usual superhero popcorn drivel) and there are a few cliche plot twists although they were slightly appropriate. My friend also explained to me the "Giand Squid Ending" (look it up), and to be honest I thought that would have been better but the ending was alright as is. Here's looking forward to the director's cut DVD with the proper ending. Expand

It's definitely not a perfect film, a couple aspects/scenes are pretty bad. Despite the almost three-hour length, the ending still felt rushed, and in the process, I feel that it lost some of the emotional impact that the book had. I had heard a lot about how bad Silk Spectre and Ozymandias were, so I went in with pretty low expectations for their characters. Their performances weren't as bad as I expected, but they definitely didn't have the emotional depth of the original characters. That being said, the film also has several brilliant moments and some great acting. The Comedian is great. I wish he were in it longer. He really is able to capture Blake's personality. Ditto for Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan, who are both perfect. The latter is a cgi character, but is given so much depth by Crudup's performance. My favourite part of the film is Manhattan's brilliant scene on Mars, when he is recounting his life. Had the entire film stayed on the same level as this scene, it would have been a masterpiece. Unfortunately, it doesn't. However, I'm willing to look past Watchmen's flaws and enjoy it's brilliant moments. Expand

If you enjoy comic book movies, particularly the high quality films lately, you will definitely enjoy this movie. Yes, there are some parts with poor acting, but hey! comic books can be cheesy sometimes too! You have to take it all, including the eccentricities. that is what makes a comic book a comic book. If you pay attention, and you already know the storyline (or at least the background of the characters) you will appreciate all of the subtle details that reference the comic. It is apparent that the production crew put alot of heart into the movie simply for that fact. I have to respectfully disagree with someone's assessment below regarding the movies "gratuitous sexual scenes and nudity". The Dr. Manhattan "penis" shots were not gratuitous by any means, they were simply shots of him walking around. Hardly sexual, merely biologically natural. Secondly, the sex scenes involving Silk Spectre were far from gratuitous, they were side shot intercourse scenes with limited nudity, and nothing more than stylized sexual thrusting. Finally, I'm much more disturbed by the fact that this bothered you more than the excessive gory violence that occurred throughout this movie. I mean, limbs getting cut off, heads getting impaled. I would much rather that my child saw a little nudity and some sex scenes (which are natural human qualities and biological functions), than disgusting nihilistic violence (which is not a natural human function, and only breads hate and desensitization to the movie-watching crowd). The American public has it all wrong. While we should make sure that our children are indeed protected from adult sexual material, we should be much more concerned with the graphic violence that has permeated our culture and allowed people to grow sadly tolerant of it. That being said, the movie was indeed a faithful, wonderful adaptation of the novel, with only a few points lacking (i.e., the depth of some of the characters was never realized). I thoroughly enjoyed the beginning montage as well, it was quite a spectacle to behold! Expand

A couple of points really didn't work (Fucking to Cohen, for example) and Synder needs a bit to trust the audience a bit more sometimes instead of hammering a point home (Big Figure's death in the prison riot would have been much better without the camera pointlessly going back to reveal the blood coming out from under the bathroom door) - but these are small points in an overall damn good effort. The book discusses the depth of destruction, corruption and violence that society has fallen to. Nations at each others throats with the only chance of unity in the world riding on the shoulders of some worldwide disaster (i.e. 'Squid Thing' in the novel, nuclear bombs in movie) propelling people to take a look at what they value, what is worth fighting for. Should we fight each other or are there things out there worth making peace with our neighbor for that we might be stronger to battle evils that we alone cannot defeat. Remember, the novel was written back in the 80s, when the world was waiting for WWIII to destroy humanity. Those of you who went thinking 'omg superhero movie' need to actually read some variety of 'comic' books, because that is what it is, its a 'comic' not a superhero movie, and comics cover an extremely wide variety of genres. If you said worst movie ever, I'm sorry, off the top of my head, Cronicles of Riddick, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (another Alan Moore adaptation) are movies that come to mind just off the top of my head. But, as I stated earlier with the parents taking their kids to see this, if you are going to review something that is an adaptation, you need to actually 1.) read the novel the movie is going to be based on 2.) research information about the novel, because guaranteed, one read through does not get you all the subtle, in depth nuances and, lets face it, many of you out there are too stupid to get them anyway since you took your children to see this movie. and 3.) understand that novels turned into film are never going to be able to include everything (i.e. why you need to read the novel) and to include everything that would satisfy your inability to comprehend what is going on during the film would take 4+ hours and lets face it, I don't want to sit for 4 hours just because you are an idiot, I will wait for the unrated/extended version to come out on DVD, understanding that a lot of the novel cannot be included in the film and thus what they will include for viewers is what attracts the largest audience: sex and violence. Remember, Hollywood is about making money, their output is what sells the most, those of us that actually enjoy the novels that films are based on must at least wait for the DVD in order to actually see what the director wanted to include in the film to make an unbiased judgement on the film. Finally, I did knock the film 2 points because I agree that the soundtrack sucked and my 2 friends and one of their wives was with me and we all laughed at the soundtrack, but all of us thoroughly enjoyed the film. BTW: props to Snyder for actually showing Manhattan's penis, it was in the novel but I didn't think they would have the balls to put it into the film, so hats off for all the risks he took with this film. This was a very good movie. It seemed a little lengthy to me, but the plot was intuitive and the action was stylized and gritty. I never read the comic books but this is a great movie to see if you were a fan of the highly stylized "300".

Watchmen is an example of both. Alan Moore's graphic novel changed comics forever, and proved to the world once and for all that they could be taken seriously as a medium. Perhaps the film version hasn't had the same impact, but it should be respected nonetheless. It's a real shame that Moore disowned the project after seeing sub-par film adaptations of From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, as Zack Snyder's Watchmen is a very good film. It's a pessimistic view of an alternate universe with real superheroes, a world of heightened Cold War paranoia and near-constant awareness of human mortality. The heroes of this universe are all deeply flawed, and make for fascinating characters - Jackie Earle Haley's psychotic masked vagrant Rorschach, Patrick Wilson's idealistic but impotent and out-of-shape caped crusader Nite Owl and Billy Crudup's increasingly removed nuclear man-god Dr. Manhattan being particular highlights. Snyder's films are always visually stunning, but Watchmen sets a new standard, as often it looks like Dave Gibbon's artwork has stepped straight off the page and onto the big screen, and Snyder's good sense for over-the-top violence and dynamic cinematography serves this living comic for grown-ups well. The film's standout scenes are the interconnected flashbacks that flesh out the characters, their relationships with each other, and what drives them, and Dr. Manhattan's origin story is particularly emotionally engaging. Watchmen also has one of the most memorable opening credits sequences on film, presented as a striking and really quite beautiful extended montage that establishes just how much has changed in a world that has had masked vigilantes operating in it since the late 1930s, all with Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changin'" playing over the top. Watchmen isn't perfect - it's rather long, yet somehow the final act still feels rushed and a little clumsily put together, and there's the odd plot-hole to be found in the theatrical release (thankfully resolved in the director's cut), but Zack Snyder's vision of Alan Moore's universe is still one of the more faithful, respectful and coherent book-to-film adaptations. Snyder retains all of the "meat" of Moore's book and brings it to life with expert visual execution. They said Watchmen could never be filmed. They were wrong. Expand

I watched just the day after binging the 12 Episodes of the original comic series. I mention this because I feel that your response to this movie depends very much on if you read the reference material before, and how long it was.
Because I didn't have time to idealize the Source Material and didn't make it a "Master Piece" in my mind I have to say that I see the movie to be very accurate to the source material. Yes, there are differences, and big ones, but I don't feel they make the end result worse than the original.
As they state in the RT's critics consensus, it might be that the story telling might be too thick to translate well to a movie. The movie has a lot of exposition and it probably won't be enough to people not familiar with the comic. But it happens that too in your first read of the comic. It comic is very thick, with all this characters and time jumping. Both mediums invite to a second reading/watching...
But as my experience goes, the movie is very well done, very stylish and entertaining. The even kept all the Pirate Comic storyline, that I was sure was the first thing to cut if you wanted to make the comic into a movie. I'm still not sure why it is there and what it add to the story as a whole (in both mediums), but it is well done and entertaining (only a little predictable).
I can't agree with the critics fiveish rating. is is more in the range of 8 for me.
If you know the comics, you already watched it, so you don't need my recommendation. If you didn't... I would advise to read them before watching it. It's only a 450 pages total, and it reads fast (I did in 2 summer afternoons).

-Music at times is really off putting and just awkwardly placed, for example the sassy scene on the film.
-Pasting at times is too fast too slow, depending on what is happening
-Some of the amazing set peaces from the comic book that really embrace the overall impact humanization are left out from the film, which is very upsetting

A great film. A much more "depressing" film in a way, depicting the fall of a bunch of Superheroes from their hey-day, and strikes elements that could be of a very psychological nature as well.

What would such people be like or have turned out like if they had been such people indeed? The bads and goods among them. The reality to them being human as well, emotions, and what not.

The despair of trying to save a broken world perhaps also makes it even more depressing. This is generally the tone the film goes for and it does it well.

Add more philosophical questions and plot-themes and some small twists, and feels great to watch this film, especially when alone. It has some funny looking visuals at some points, depicted after the comics of-course, and does has that film noir feel to it running at a great pace, with enough mystery sprinkled here and there that a true superhero film-goer should appreciate for the simple fact alone that it is a completely different take to your average superhero film.

Simply a great addition to a shelf of films.

Watchmen is great with action sequences and an Ok story, and most of the cast over did the roles except for Jackie Earl Hallie who played as Rorschach gave the performance of his career. All the costumes were spot on from the comic book which made me happy that they at least got something perfect and so close to perfection, and the film's long running times made thing a little more difficult as the Ultimate Cut of the film reaches 4 Hours, but despite of all of the mistakes, it is a worthy comic book adaptation worth watching. It does a near perfect job at encapsulating and reflecting the tone of the graphic novel and while the film starts of a tad slow it then grips you and makes you want more. The film is an amazing experience start to finish and does a great job at showing corruption in a world of super heroes and powered beings, it makes you think if you would really want to be in a world with caped crusaders. Of course being a film adaptation of a long graphic novel they had to change and leave some things but that doesn't really bother me because the film has some much attention to detail and call backs to the graphic novel. Zack Snyder even included very small lines from the graphic novel and incorporated them into the film giving you a very faithful and accurate adaptation. Currently planning on watching the three and a half hour Ultimate Cut and I expect I will enjoy that as well. Overall this is a darn near perfect adaptation of the brilliant graphic novel and a must see for any fans of the graphic novel or just to anyone who wants to see a dark super hero film. Expand

Actually better than I thought it might be. I'm not a comic book afficionada by any means, but I like a well-told dramatic story on the big screen. I'm not a comic book afficionada by any means, but I like a well-told dramatic story on the big screen. This movie is almost worth seeing just for the opening credits sequence alone! Bob Dylan's The Times They Are A-changing is used brilliantly against a backdrop of comic-historic vignettes. Truly a brilliant opening. But then, as other reviewers have noted, it doesn't (can't?) really live up to this amazing opening page. Still I found it to be occasionally brilliant in certain scenes, just lacking overall coherence. Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Malin Akerman are especially good in their roles. This one is worth renting, but I'm sure it disappointed many Watchmen fans. Expand

I never read the graphic novel. I saw the first trailer during The Dark Knight and thought wow, awesome trailer, I like that Smashing Pumpkins song and the way they made it work with the trailer, and the movie will never be this good. But my office was buying tickets to anyone interested and a couple friends of friends said it was good, so I decided to check it out. I'm not going to comment on the story, since I'm assuming it is based on the book. It was intriguing enough, besides one random heroic scene toward the end of the middle of the movie where I was like uh, that was pointless. As far as cinematography and such, there were too many popular songs in the film, but all but one worked (I forgot which one, somethin in the middle). The sex scene toward the end was also super cheesy and I wasn't sure if the director was trying to make it atrociously bad intentionally to show awkwardness or he just failed. Overall though, I liked the movie and would watch it again with a friend so I can talk about it with them instead of not wanting to spoil it haha. Expand

Overall, an enjoyable enough adaption and probably as close as a movie is going to get to the source material. Some scenes work a lot better than others: Dr Manhattan's origin sequence is fantastic as are Rorshach's jail sequences. Overall, an enjoyable enough adaption and probably as close as a movie is going to get to the source material. Some scenes work a lot better than others: Dr Manhattan's origin sequence is fantastic as are Rorshach's jail sequences. I actually enjoyed the ending which deviates somewhat from the source material as personally I don't think the graphic novel's ending would have worked on screen. Other moments didn't work at all and drag the movie down quite a bit, specifically Snyder's over the top gore and poorly inserted fight scenes as well as the most awkwardly staged sex scene ever filmed. Both of these elements jar with the rest of the movie which has enough moments of greatness to make it worthwhile. The soundtrack has the same problem in that when it works, it works well, and when it doesn't, it fails spectacularly. I understand it was in keeping with elements of the graphic novel but I don't think it was a good choice (oh, and to the reviewer who commented on the 'weird' cover of Hallelujah... thats actually the original version..). The cast vary pretty wildly with a standout being Jackie Earle Hayley who turns in a great, great performance, while others barely register at all beyond looking like their characters. Some of the dialogue lifted directly from the graphic novel just doesn't work when read aloud so I wouldn't say the fault is with the script. Despite its disjointed nature, its a movie well worth seeing provided you're not expecting a typical superhero movie. Just don't expect it to be brilliant. Expand

The story-telling was beautiful, the effects were well choreographed, and the acting was great. I can say that the changes were great, and overall it really faithfully captured the comic book. On the other hand, their were many un-needed moments. The violence was made a bit too graphic for the material. Made with all the finesse of a good horror movie, the action is portrayed more graphic than it even needs to be to be realistic. While many movies such as Sin City were able to go into graphic detail and violence, it was handled tastefully. In Watchment, it was the pure opposite. It was over-emphasized as in a horror movie to make you cringe, which was just odd to the feeling of watching this interpretation of a great comic book. Expand

None the less i can identify with what you re saying. I cant say that the film was subtle or made with the intention to point out the theme's you say were in the comic and not in the movie. But I was moved by the film; beyond the ultravoilence and silly softporn scene (just a scene) the story was still there. Snyder probably wants a lot of people coming to his movies; but we live in a world where people cant get over the fact that they saw two people having sex on the cinema screen. He could make a watchmen movie with all the subtle character development and intellectual depth which youve loved to see more. But you were to be one of few to actually notice these things; the rest of the crowd would stop thinking at the point they see a glowing blue penis. So i think you cant blame Snyder; should have covered up that penis though; gave the movie some bad reviews. Expand

However, I have no idea if someone who's never read the graphic novel will get half the layers in this thing. I think many of the above critics didn't read it, so maybe there is a big difference in how it came across. One of the most surprisingly good things was that the film wasn't dumb-downed or lightened up much from the source & instead they assumed the audience could keep up and take how dark the story really is(& graphic). I actually liked the changes made for the ending (what Adrian "creates")--better than the book---as the original seemed distracting. I wasn't surprised the Pirate comic-within-a-comic part was cut out though I did miss the climatic storylines coming together in the NYC scene (including the Pirate one)--which was very potent in the novel--but not really transferred. Dr Manhattan was handled very well in the film and I'm glad he wasn't totally CG--rather a mix of CG/motion cap and Billy Crudup. Sometimes he was a little too CG in parts, but mostly it was great. Also--just want to add, loved the soundtrack---really helped supplement some of the lost visual themes/feelings for the specific time period. Overall, definitely worth seeing in theaters. Expand

The look of the film is exquisite, and though I found the soundtrack to be much more heavy handed than necessary, the title sequence set to Bob Dylan is brilliant. The story was of course truncated but it never feels rushed, and the drama is left to unfold at a pace that is quite unusual for a superhero film (I think a lot of the negative reviews have settled on this point, though I found it to be one of the film's greatest strengths). Was it a masterpiece on par with The Dark Knight? Of course not. No actor here, not even Haley, comes close to the transcendent performance by Heath Ledger in the latest Batman film, and Goode's villain, if you can call it that, is distractingly bad. But perhaps it's unfair to compare the two movies. The Dark Knight tried hard NOT to be a comic book tale, where as Watchmen is the ultimate comic story. Watchmen, the film, does more than a journeyman's job of bringing that story to the screen. Expand

That being said, the book is definitely better, but the movie is still good. The acting is great, and the special effects are magnificent. My biggest gripe is the song selection. In the midst of all the blood and violence, a happy rock and roll song would be playing and totally kill the mood. *SPOILER* One more thing, the ending is very disappointing and anti-climactic. Some people might be confused by the storyline, so if you aren't very good at understanding what's going on in movies i recommend not seeing this film.
