An absolute bold, unexpected modern classic in cinema. Yes, I AM serious. I expected to simply 'like' it, I didn't expect to be blown away by a masterpiece.

I feel that with the time the studio gave the director he did a great job. Ideally it could have been a mini-series with the same or a bigger budget, but what company, especially in this economy, would risk that on a mini-series. I agree that some of the music choices were questionable. I also think that Ozymandias should have been portrayed as less of a mean character, at the end of the book he still questions if he did the right thing, giving him a more human and less robotic quality. Still though I really enjoyed the movie! Expand

And it has tons of convolutions and characters. To parse it down to its length now is amazing. People who complain about length are the same who have no appreciation for the original text. To me, the critics who are complaining about this movie should also complain about "Macbeth" because they "talk funny" in it. This movie was great, and I applaud Synder's application of it onto film. Hey if I have ADHD and was able to sit through the movie, it was damn good! Leaving the theater wanting to see the supposed theatrical release of the Director's Cut, it had to be even better! Why did it get such mixed reviews? The critics expecting a carbon copy of the book or just hated the movie before release, likely due to their opinions that it was the "unfilmable novel," were disappointed, due to very unfair biases. I can attest to the fact that some frames of the movie, could be digitally enhanced to look like frames from the comic book and visa-versa, meaning if that frame of the movie were an actual photograph, the comic panel would be a tracing of that photograph! But you can't expect everything to match! Some comic book elements don't translate to a perfect screenplay. Why wasn't Spider-Man criticized for giving Spidey the power to naturally produce web, instead of using cartridges, and making the Green Goblin a high-tech, glider-riding psycho, instead of the original Halloween costume wearing weirdo, even depicted as riding a broom in the original animated series? That movie was adored by most critics, and me. You can't expect a movie to get enormous critical success when it has such a devout cult following. It's sort of like my favorite music; heavy metal, heavy, heavy metal. Most people hate it, but all the underground headbangers and metalheads love it! Then when a softer, mainstream metal band hits, most devoted underground listeners hate it, even if critics praise the music! As for Watchmen; if you are a typical moviegoer, you will enjoy Watchmen, however, if you are a not-so-underground, die-hard, cult, original comic book worshiper, than you will hate it. Hopefully, as I have, you can appreciate both works, for the separate forms of art they are, and understand they aren't meant to kill one another, they just appeal to different crowds, and be part of both those crowds! I didn't think it was too long or winded, I can say thanks to my attention span for that one. I thought it was a great movie that some people are clearly just angry that it wasn't exactly like the GN or some people just don't like using that thing in their heads to formulate ideas without being spoon fed. I guess without an explosion happening every 5 seconds its hard to concentrate for some. And this to parents who brought their children to see this; it was rated R for starters, and another thing is as a responsible adult background information or a little bit of homework should be done on the movie so you don't have children watching how babies are made. I think this will stand well over time and it Zack did a fine job attempting to translate the "untranslatable" to the big screen. Expand

However they are superb for different reasons. Watchmen is a beautiful, witty, poignant, bittersweet, breathtaking, dreamy, heartaching, beautiful film. But it also has moments of awesomeness, fun, gory violence and layered humour, sardonic dialogue, wryness, irony and a complex interesting narrative. I feel I must comment on the negative reviews this gets from a wide amount of people. Excluding those people who simply turned off by it for some reason, I really feel there is a HUGE amount of sour, humourless critics, and even some political activists (let's say christians-just read their reviews), trying to damage this film, Watchmen. They seem to hate the film for what makes it so successful. It challenges many assumptions, which is what makes it so great. anyway, it's sad to see these negative, sometime politically motivated attacks.....I really hope the people who created it know why it's being attacked like it is and can ignore these haters who want films like this crushed. Why would they do this? I can only give this film 10. Expand

I mean does Zach Snyder owe some of the critics money. This movie not only sticks true to the graphic novel (Which I loved) it transfers it perfectly on screen and maybe he used a little to much slow motion but it adds style to the best graphic novel in history. You may hate but it has a great soundtrack, it does Alan Moore justice and Rorschach was perfect maybe the Silk Spectre could have done a better job but she is hot so who cares and futhermore Zach did a great job of elimanting "Under The Hood" and "The Black Freighter" because it would have confused anyone who hasn't got a chance to read the novel. Scriptwriting at its finest. Casting was brilliant, sets and effects were precisely what was needed, and the director clearly had exactly what he wanted in his mind as the film was being made. This movie is a must see for anyone who likes movies that are deeper and more meaningful than your run of the mill comic book movie. What people who gripe about this movie need to understand is that it is not a hero movie. Not about superheroes. it is the story of Ant-heroes. the characters ALL have deeply ingrained, deep-seated psychological issues. Also, they have yet to see the full picture, with the 'Tales of the Black Freighter' and 'Under the Hood' DVDs being released, and (Hopefully!) a directors cut will all reveal even more of the story, the characters and the plot. The biggest complaint many seem to have is related to the amount of violence, specifically concerning the portrayal of a rate and murder of a pregnant woman however, it should be noted that this violence is included as a character history, portraying that these events deeply scarred and deeply damaged the involved characters. Much of the negativity people throw around is centered on their own need to blame something for their ignorance or lack of understanding of the greater depths of this masterpiece. Expand

Don't expect Spiderman or The Dark Knight. I thought this movie was much more driven by the plot and the characters than the action (although I thought the scattered action sequences were great). The characters are very fleshed out--their motivations, histories and flaws are revealed in coordination with the plot in a manner I thought very effective. The characters, plot, and even soundtrack do a great job depicting the setting, which is really an integral part of the film's meaning. It was thought-provoking without being preachy, had good plot and action, and showed some pretty good skin. All around winner as long as you don't go in expecting a blow-em-up shoot-em-up action overload. Expand

Watchmen is a visceral piece of cinema which asks what is right and wrong in our society, and who is to judge it? The acting is pretty good, the graphics are phenomenal, and every moment of this film is gripping and wonderfully done. The dialogue is not boring or long, but rather intelligent and insightful into the characters and the situations this world, and our own, face. I have not read the graphic novel yet, but as a movie, it is extremely solid. If you liked The Dark Knight, this is another piece to put into your collection. It takes many of the themes present in The Dark Knight, and doubles them into an explosive, volatile, and imaginative movie. A must for all action film-goers, especially the super hero fans. Expand

Anyone who's read my reviews of comic book-inspired movies knows I've neverYes, I've read Watchmen. And yes, I do believe it is one of the most interesting, involving, thought-provoking, mind-blowing books I've ever read of any genre. Anyone who's read my reviews of comic book-inspired movies knows I've never claimed to be a comic book fan. I usually steer clear of the medium, but Watchmen was a must-read (actually a must-read over and over). And being a Watchmen fan going into Warner Bros Pictures' and Zack Snyder's film adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' critically acclaimed work, I had high hopes for this feature film based on what's widely regarded as unfilmable source material. Did Snyder's cinematic vision live up to expectations? Absolutely. Snyder and writers David Hayter and Alex Tse had to lose portions of the graphic novel (which first appeared as a comic book series in the mid-1980s) in order to condense the story into a reasonable running time and comprehensible narrative. They also had the difficult task of making the film accessible to those who haven't read Watchmen without trampling on the dreams of Watchmen fans who've been waiting decades for a movie based on Moore and Gibbons' characters. Watchmen fans must realize going in that this is not a panel by panel adaptation in the vein of 300. That would have been an impossible endeavor given the richness and sheer depth of the graphic novel. As such, important portions of Watchmen have been left out. Failing to make the cut in the feature film are any mentions of Tales of the Black Freighter (an animated short is being released separately on DVD) and Hollis Mason's Under the Hood. And Watchmen the movie relegates the past members of the Minutemen to mere fleeting glimpses in the film's marvelously inventive opening credits (one of the best lead-ins to a film I can recall). The ending's also been drastically tweaked. But all that aside, most importantly, the message, the tone, and the six central characters have made the leap to the big screen nearly completely intact. Alan Moore used Watchmen as a way to deconstruct the superhero genre while at the same time reflecting on world issues. What sacrifices would we be willing to make in order to save the world from itself? Does the end justify the means, if it entails the loss of life in order to stop a nuclear war? Watchmen is set in an alternate 1980's reality in which presidential term limits are no longer enforced and the Doomsday Clock is closer than ever to striking midnight as the United States and Russia move toward nuclear war. In this twisted world, costumed vigilantes once worked side by side with law enforcement. Known as the Minutemen, these crime-fighters didn't have any special powers, just the desire to clean up the streets. As the original group aged and moved on, a new wave of costumed crime-fighters popped up. This new group (the Crimebusters) followed in the footsteps of the Minuteman, rounding up bank robbers and murderers, all without the backing of the power of a badge. But the tide eventually turned and costume-wearing vigilantes were forced into retirement with the passage of the Keene Act (the film glosses over this part of the story). After the passage of the Keene Act, Dr Manhattan and The Comedian, a ruthless, morally bankrupt, cold-blooded killer, are allowed to continue to work with/work for the government. Rorschach, another member of the team, continues to hunt down villains but does so unofficially, outside the confines of the law. Although Snyder and company serve up backstories by way of flashbacks, most of the action in the movie Watchmen takes place following the murder of The Comedian. Rorschach becomes driven to find the truth behind who killed The Comedian (someone he holds in high regard despite his despicable acts). In order to ferret out the killer and find out if whoever it is is targeting costumed vigilantes and for what purpose, Rorschach pulls his old crime-fighting compadres out of retirement. As Rorschach, Nite Owl II, and Silk Spectre II dig into this plot to kill all 'superheroes', they uncover a conspiracy the depths of which they never anticipated upon hearing the news of The Comedian's murder.
Watchmen is not a film for everyone and it won't connect with audiences looking for the standard superhero genre flick. Watchmen is unflinchingly violent, there's nudity (Dr Manhattan's penis is right there in your face even if you blink, you won't miss it), raw sex, and there's none of the lighthearted superhero-type moments in this that we've come to expect from major motion picture adaptations of comic books. Watchmen presents a world in which actions have real consequences and they're not necessarily pretty, and if people were in fact superheroes, they'd be warped and in desperate need of some serious therapy. This film's gritty and nasty and you want to wash your hands when you're done watching it. But I'm betting after just one screening of the film, you'll think more about Watchmen than any other comic book/graphic novel-inspired movie you've ever witnessed.

If you're the kind of person who gets worked up over comic book adaptations not being 100% faithful to the material then you really need a new hobby. Every aspect of the movie was perfect and the ending was great, instead of the good guys just casually beating the evil villain they then turned the whole narrative on its head and left you wondering who the good guys really were. For those of you unaware of the plot, it is a compelling film noir mystery thriller about a group of people who become superheroes,I never read the graphic novel, but I've seen the film several times now and I can hardly get enough of it. For those of you unaware of the plot, it is a compelling film noir mystery thriller about a group of people who become superheroes, are then used by the US government to fight its enemies and are later discarded by the US government. One of the group was murdered and the others start investigating we he had to die.

Interesting about the back story is that both the socio-political climate and characters are well-developed and realistic. The use of superheroes by the US allowed the Sovjetunion and US to become more polarized than in our reality, making the US government far more conservative and bringing the world very close to nuclear holocaust. The superheroes all have their own unique character traits, each based on real and flawed human beings like I've met in my own life. What's most interesting about the plot of Watchmen is the way these different personalities interact with one another and how they set themselves apart from the rest of humanity.

What sets this film apart from other films, however, is an audiovisual style few people besides Zack Snyder could actually pull off. The visuals are simply breathtaking throughout the entire film and the audio adds to the atmosphere the way only a few other films can. Watching the film, I feel immersed in a surreal dream and the first time I sat glued to my chair for the entire duration because of the sheer beauty of the visuals, the interesting plot and the fascinating characters.

Maybe the graphic novel was even more compelling as the film plot-wise, I don't think anyone could have done a better job making a film based on the graphic novel. Please remember that graphic novel and film are two different media and you'll never be able to tell the entire story of a multiple edition graphic novel into a single film, however you'll also never be able to control the pacing, acting and soundtrack of a graphic novel. It is my opinion that those who didn't like this film either ignore the differences between the two different media and are frustrated by the film straying from the graphic novel more often than they would like or simply didn't get the story and lost interest due to their confusion. After seeing this film several time, I can't really find anything not to like about this film.

A one of a kind Movie, Visually impressive. Casting is perfect, Direction is perfect, one of the best superhero movie. It honors its source material in a good way, Zack Snyder has done it again.

Many of them were not pleased with this adaptation. Maybe because the extended DVD version was my first exposure to it, I am not in agreement with this view. (The DVD I had came with a video version of the comic, something which comic book purists probably also dislike, but I thought it was very cool.) Contrary to what the Alan Moore worshippers think, I thought this was excellent. This is up there among the weirdest and most visually exciting flicks ever. The story mixes both a dark, semi-realistic take on the super hero genre with alternate history. The tale is built up around 4 unforgettable characters: the Comedian (imagine if the Joker was one of the good guys, but retained his nasty nature), Dr. Manhattan (a super-superman created in a radioactive accident), Rorschach (an uncompromising crime fighter with a mask made up of ever shifting Rorschach ink blots), and Adrian Veidt (a cold genius who comes up with a unique and horrible way to save the human race from itself). One could complain about some unnecessary violence and the treatment of a couple of the female characters - point taken there - but this is still a festival of stunning imagery and unique storytelling.
