Watchmen is the most underrated book to adaptation ever. The cast did a great job but the MVP is Zack Snyder, who does an amazing job of creating an almost perfect film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Funny how the Watchman morality tale was the case of art taking a life of it's own beyond the intentions of the author Alan Moore? For contrast I have read the comic and oof the author still really did write an epic backfire.

Rorschach the just man the immovable object vs the unstoppable force that is Dr Manhatten. "No compromise not even in the face of Armageddon". Which is basically not that we just survive/live, but how we survive and live matters the most. The things humans will just do to get by. Embrace the big lie of the hiding the murder of innocents for a presumed greater good. Then evil has no limits against the individual, because all that matters is the collective greater good. Watchman asks some really important and fundamental questions. How far can we go and how far should we go as a species just to survive/live on?

Oh and the film is beautifully shot, well acted for the most part, with kickass actions scenes and rounded off by a great music score.

Sure, for a person not already familiar with the material, it might be hard to understand and follow the complex narrative of this film. But after multiple viewings it becomes better and better, especially when you watch the director's cut and the ultimate cut. The visuals in this movie, similar to all Zack Snyder films, are exhilarating. The actors do an exceptional job, Jackie Earle Haley and Jeffrey Dean Morgan stand out the most as Rorschach and The Comedian. The fight scenes are gleefully bloody and very well choreographed, and the direction is very sharp and tense. The overall atmosphere is amazingly depicted, the situation in the movie feels extremely realistic. One of my favorite superhero films of all time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watchmen surpases even the dark knight but unfortunately its one of the most underrated movies of the 2000's. With its very complex narative storytelling and slow burn this movie makes into a superhero masterpiece. The fight scenes are very stylish and its the only superhero movie I ever saw that doesnt have a villain. Ozymandias' plan is to detonate nuclear bombs all over the world and blame doctor manhattan so that the world Unite against him. Poate based on a lie, but peace. Doctor manhatan leaves earth. THe biggest problem is that I should stat with pg13 movies cause I'm not old enough to watch even a mild R but I still loved this movie. Expand

Simplesmente espetacular!

Enfim, totalmente recomendado.

One of my friends had recently received the graphic novel as a present and he would often bring it. I was curious to know what the graphic novel was about, so I looked it up, and that's how I discovered this movie. I wasn't much into superhero genre before this, so I decided to take a look at it. Back then I thought this was a great story, and after having read the original graphic novel, I think it's a great adaptation.

In the opening scenes the Minutemen are summarised with the song "For the times they are a-changin'" playing in the background. It was so cool to watch. It doesn't matter whether you like Zack Snyder's movies or not. One thing you do have to admit is that his opening scenes are always awesome. And this one is the one that absolutely nails it.

The costumes have been made either very faithful to the comic book counterparts like those of Silk Spectre II and The Comedian, or have been improvised as in the case of Ozymandias and Night Owl II. Dr Manhattan's "thing" is surely a bit distracting, but I was able to ignore it after a while. Rorschach was my favourite character in this movie. The one criticism this movie gets is that he was portrayed to be a badass dude instead of a self centred hypocrite that he was in the graphic novel, and I completely understand this. But I also like this interpretation. Since most of the story is centred over Rorschach figuring out about The Comedian's death, he has to look as interesting as possible in order to keep the audience engaged.

Another criticism this movie often gets is that it was unable to capture the visual essense of the graphic novel, which I completely disagree with. The graphic novel has an 80's styled drawing. Why would you want this movie to be made with that style? It is a good thing that this movie didn't go for the same visual style. This criticism is the equivalent of "why Wolverine doesn't wear his comic book costume in the movies". Dude things have to be changed in order to be adapted on the big screen. It's also the reason why the giant squid was replaced with a nuclear bomb. A giant squid sounds very funny instead of serious. No country would take any big action in case that happens.

If you're watching this movie for the first time, I'd say you should try the Director's Cut first. If you have no problem with the length of the movie and you can see and understand everything that you see in complicated movies, I'd say you should go with the Ultimate Cut. I watched the Ultimate Cut. Initially I was bored because of how the story was dragging on, but slowly everything started to make sense. I really like all the action scenes in this movie, and often go back to watching it just for the old time's sake.

I didn't watch it for a year or two after release, because of low critic scores (and mature content, I was like 15 at the time).I'm glad I eventually gave it a chance though. Its very dark and adult, definitely not for everyone, but in my mind its as true to the comic as an adaption of this work for the big screen could be. Some notable changes were made, one in particular was controversial with comic book fans, but I view these as necessary for the comic to work in a modern movie. The acting is great, the dialogue well-written, the score is perfection. I can't recommend it highly enough. Expand

I read the comic ages ago, so I don't remember it well enough to say if this film is a faithful adaptation of it or not. I do remember the art style was very austere and realistic, while the movie chooses an aesthetic and style that are much more flamboyant (yet mega-gritty), including the action sequences. For some comic fans that might be a terrible sin. All I can say is the movie works for me, specially the ultimate cut with the animation segments.
I heard someone on youtube -can't remember who- say that while the comic was a commentary on superhero comics, this movie is a commentary on superhero movies, which does make sense when you think about it.

With a mature, well written plotDefinitely one of the most underrated movies of all time. Looking at this now, after over a decade of superhero box office domination;I firmly believe this is one of the best superhero movies ever made. With a mature, well written plot examining the genre and asking questions about how the concept of a superhero reflects on how we view human nature, the story raises interesting questions while exploring an interesting world and developing complex characters with meaningful flaws. The movie also has a great sense of style; with the specific choice of color, lighting, and shot composition, all mixed with some great editing making every scene visually interesting and satisfying to watch. Very tightly written, the film's plot feels fleshed out and meaningful while still including well choreographed action which only serves to service the plot instead of slow it down. While not fully living up to the original comic's greatness; Watchmen is still a superbly well directed film made by filmmakers who respect their source material and genuinely wanted to do it justice; placing the themes and quality of the story above marketability. For the record, I did not read the graphic novel, and I think I understood enough from the film in one viewing not to need to read it. Had I read it, I would've been too busy nitpicking about what was changed or missing to actually enjoy the film (I also saw the first Harry Potter film before reading the books, and enjoyed the film a lot more as a result.) So in this case, ignorance is bliss. This was a long movie, but I didn't leave my seat, because every moment was exciting. I also found it was more entertaining and less plodding than "The Dark Knight," a film many are comparing it too. In some regards, "Knight" even feels blander in my memory, although I loved it. But perhaps that's why Dark Knight was so much less polarizing. It wasn't as risky. Expand

If you have not read the book, I suggest that you at least read up a little about the characters to understand the deep stories behind them. The characters are what tmakes the movie shine. Most of the characters are well acted, most of all by Jackie Earle Haley as Rorshach. He was incredible and played one of the most impressive roles I've seen in years. The violence is quite over-the-top and is pretty awesome if you like that kind of stuff. This movie is definitely not for children; along with the obscene amounts of violence there is also a lot of nudity and some language as well. The script is well written and Zack Snyder does a great job of directing everything. Everything fits in well. At times however it feels like Snyder overused action sequences and gore too much. The overall message from the graphic novel was there, middle aged vigilantism, and at times kept the same brooding nature. Some scenes were altered for continuity and to make the story line look like it happened in a a matter of days.
Changing the ending, though it may appear as heresy to the fans of the graphic novel, made the Watchmen acessable to a new audience while allowing for the Film to be shorter,
The music adds to the moment and some of the montages are fantastic.
The Film ignored many of the sub-plots and tiny relationships built up in Moore's work however if you look the relationships are there; they are just not as explicitly pointed out.
All in all a very good translation only stopped from being truly fantastic by the insistence of fight sequences and gore that adds nothing to the plot and seem to be there just so those who wish to see violence do not get bored.

Books and films, apples and oranges. It's your fault if you can't make the transition. To those offended by sex and violence, if a movie is based on a graphic novel (which is not the same as a comic book), avoid it. You will always be offended. And finally, anyone wanting to see an action film should choose something else. This is not a turn-off-your-brain-and-enjoy-the-ride kind of romp. There's a lot to think about and the average movie goer will not want to do the mental work needed to get it. If This movie was incredibly good but only in the sense that it was a great homage to the source material. It felt as if Snyder simply wanted to make something that would be an accompaniment to the comics, rather than a stand alone movie. If you've read the comics you will love it if not you could easily hate it. I do think they did the best job they could have possibly done, the story is simply too dense for the silver screen. The problem is that with so much of the characters back stories trimmed down and skimmed over the general audience won't connect with them and may view their humanness as hackneyed. Also the way this is marketed and the time that it came out will alienate too much of its audience. Like the reviewers I've read saying dr. Manhattan was a silver surfer ripoff. Or all the x-men and spider man fans who think they can veg-out and watch some fighting with a few jokes. Oh and all of you how say the ending change wasn't good this is not a bible and it is not blasphemy it is improvement. It ties the story together so much better it isn't a campy and it simply makes more sense. My overall take is that I will probably tell people not to watch it for fear they will spoil their appetite for "the watchmen". I think if the read it first their hunger for the film will be voracious. I gave it a 9 because i felt it was the best transition possible except for the super long directors cut with the black freighter edited back in, but that would definitely not be for mainstream American audiences. Even the ending change (I read the Wikipedia entry for it) is acceptable. Butler does an amazing job of adapting comics because he is faithful to the original works, adding his artistry in the amazing camera work, editing and sleekness of his movies. Personally, I would like him to be the designated comic book adapter in Hollywood, because he's so good at it. Fat chance, but a girl can dream. I did think the sex scene was a bit much, because I think the same ideas could have been portrayed without showing it so graphically. Yes it is a natural human behavior, but it's a private one! I like it that way. You can suggest it by showing faces, and limbs just as well. IMHO. Dr. Manhattan. Folks, get a grip. It's a penis, OMG run for the hills. Why is a penis so abhorrent to us when the female form is used so often and so blatantly to no such outcry? But I digress. His nudity was very in keeping with what he has become. Again, right on the money with the comic. The gore was a bit much, could have been artfully implied without actual entrails hanging from the ceiling, but again, faithful to the comic. As for the plot line of the film, I love it too. It's not the normal comic hero movie. It's an idea of what real people in hero costumes would be like. They would not be mythical, nearly perfect people who are in near perfect harmony with each other on issues of good and evil. I think Moore has a very real understanding of human nature, and it's not pretty. But it is real. I love Rorschach. Holy crap, was he perfect. I did not for one second question that he WAS Rorschach. Just brilliant. You don't like it fine. But don't bash it just because it wasn't the action flick you thought it was. Try looking into the movies you want to see, to see what they are really about, don't just take the previews word for it. The preview is not the movie, and one should not be judged on the merits of the other. Expand

I believe The Watchmen will please fans of the comic and the average movie-goer as well. Anyone who hasen't read the comic, however, might be a little confused about the opening sequence, which shows all the events prior to the present setting, which are all explained in the comic series. The only reason Snyder decided to do it that way was because the movie would have been way too long. The action is intense and satisfying, the dialogue is perfectly portrayed as in the comic, and the visuals are breathtaking. There is alot of slow-mo, however, but It's used in all the right places, and it adds a lot of visual eye-candy. The only thing I didn't like about the movie was the makeup department. What happened guys?? You made "Nixon" look horribly deformed and fake. In General, though, I think this is a must-see for comic fans and regular movie-goers alike. Expand

Not even a niggling feeling. Most of the casting was spot on Pretty darned good. I approached this with some trepidation, having waited for it for around 20 years. Unlike with the recent Star Wars films, I wasn't disappointed at all. Not even a niggling feeling. Most of the casting was spot on (Ozymandeus being the only slight mis-casting). The decision on what to include and what not to was close to perfect and overall the movie was very brave and uncompromising. Very, very good. Expand
