I find it interesting that many of the negative reviews seem to be inconsistent with each other; one review may say CGI sucks while the other says its awesome, or one says music sucks and the other says its awesome. Normally, when a movie really sucks, the people generally agree on the suckiness. That being said, I thought it was a great movie that wove an interesting tale of "super-heroes" and their backgrounds into an over-arching characterization of life, the universe, and everything. There are many things going on and it may be difficult for some to follow but I thought the sequences and timing of most of the scenes worked really well into weaving all the stories into one. I think that the alternate reality 1980s was depicted well with some iconic 80s imagery as easter-eggs. I think the majority of the music was very capturing and well suited for the emotion and texture that was being conveyed. I think the representation of "super-heroes" from the 1940s was done very well. I don't think that slo-mo was over used because I can only recall two scenes that used it (although there are probably more). Obviously, if one is looking for a something specific they will see it predominantly whereas if you look at the bigger picture, you will ostensibly get the bigger picture. This movie is violent....and it should be. The scenes with extreme violence carry a message meant to be attached to a character or group of characters; these messages include: helplessness, superiority, survival, humanity, justice, evil, reality, and confusion. This movie is not for everyone but it stands very well on its own. I think this movie is nowhere near similar to Sin City or 300. This is a different class that deserves a view from a wide range of audiences that are looking for a different view of our past, present, and future (in science fiction terms.). Expand

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but As a casual fan of the graphic novel, I thought the movie was satisfying. The action scenes were beautifully executed and added a nice flare to what I expected to be a dead adaptation of the original masterpiece. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but my opinion alone cannot be trusted because of my familiarity with the story and Snyder's distinct style. Without knowing the plot, I can understand someone getting lost and without recognizing key scenes, I can also see how transitions could be abrupt. Overall, as a fan, but not fanatic, of the comic I give it a 9 because it remained incredibly faithful while adding cinematic zing that movies need but comics can do without. I was very excited for this movie, and was not disappointed. Expand

The responsibility of the director/screenplay writer is to 'interpret' the book, knowing full-well that they cannot duplicate the force of that work (Watchmen being an excellent example). If I had to judge this movie based on its faithfulness to the graphic novel, it would be a one. But my responsibility as someone watching an adaption of a wonderful book is to critique the 'interpretation' of Watchmen, which is a definite 9 (admirable cinematics, incredible type-casting, respectable pacing, discerning use of special effects, etc.). It was impossible for Snyder to choose between "book fidelity" and "doing-his-own-thing;" in the end, you can only have a satisfying interpretation. Expand

Obviously, most folks tend to look past its complexity and into the realm of immaturity to escape a movie that puts their brain to the test. This movie doesn't compare to the greatness of the graphic novel, but i tell you that the complexity of Alan Moore's work is still present throughout the movie. So, maybe just maybe, if you didn't understand the movie the first go around; take your time and watch it again, and perhaps you will find a more concrete understanding the second go around. I confess that I did not fully understand the graphic novel after the first read, but my second read through, I started to see the story a bit more clearer; the same I believe goes for the movie, as well. The film has its flaws as well, but i do honestly believe some of them will be corrected in the Director's Cut. As,for the music choices even though All Along The Watchtower and Ride Of The Valkyries were a bit cliché. The rest seemed to fit successfully within the film. Agree or disagree, this film certainly accomplished the job of being faithful yet entertaining accomplishment for Zach Snyder and Co. Expand

No matter how much fans of the graphic novel will want it, it won't include the totality of the novel. With that said, they did an excellent job cutting down to the baseline of what make the essence of 'Watchmen". It wasn't sincerely a movie for the stringent fan, but for an audience willing to give a movie with a comic book heritage a fair chance of proving the medium past the shallow, direct, action orientated that sticks as a stigma to the genre, and as a potential output for sincere philosophical waxing. While nowhere as deep as the novel, its one of those movies that you can sit through several times, and get something new out of it, giving it a great deal of replay value. If its going over your head, you probably should watch it again, and think onto the 'whys' of things happening, instead of presuming you should be force-fed info like the dumbed-down population Hollywood generally takes us for. In short, deep enough to be gratifying, while controlled enough to be intellectually condescending. Expand

Would the Xmen movies have existed if they hadn't sold thousands of comics to practically rabid fans? Or the ever-successful Dark Knight? And yet they only seem to be universally well-received when they are noticeably changed from the original material - I loved the comic when I first read it, and got more out of a re-read than I ever have out of any other comic - The idea of peace coming at such a heavy cost raising an ever-relevant question of what, exactly, is actually right - Costumed vigilantes are portrayed as HUMAN, not just a one-dimensional boy scout in tights who never has more than a one-shot, easy-to-solve moral quandary. It goes against the standard formula for a comic movie, basically because the original was written by Alan Moore, a write who stands so far away from the rest of comic writers with his gritty, realistic storywork. So the movie isn't something totally different to the comic. I frankly wouldn't go to see a movie called Watchmen if I thought I was getting an atrocity like Spider-man 3 or Constantine, movies only really associated with the comics of origin by similar names of some of the characters, when you get down to it. Watchmen was exactly what something produced from the comic could only, and had to, be - a near-perfect reproduction. Jackie Earl Haley made me love Rorschach all over again, and Patrick Wilson perfectly captured Nite-Owls insecurity and the intrinsic sadness that he always seemed to carry in the comic stayed with the character - Manhattan's nudity isn't something I had a problem with, though due to certain alterations to the ending and elsewhere, many of the biblical links that his gradual 'de-clothing' was meant to show are missed or glossed over, which, while a little sad, is completely understandable - I didn't have the required seven hours it would have taken to tell properly. Near-perfect, only gets a nine because they changed the ending. Expand

Don't let all these negative fanboy reviews fool you, Watchmen is a good flick whether you have read it or not. I have a friend that was a guy who didn't read it that loved it, and a girl that did the same as well. I think it's ridiculous to point out minor faults in movie adaptations. If the watchmen was based directly on the novel without change, it would be a boring movie. Props to the writers for making it interesting. And Alan Moore was quoted saying it was "the best screenplay that they could've done". Sounds good to me. Violence wasn't over the top, and there wasn't much sex. It's rated R for a reason. Parents read the ratings. There is a point behind them. I'll agree the girl playing Silk Spectre was terrible, but the acting wasn't too awfully bad. I read the graphic novel within a week of seeing the film, and I have to say the transition is incredibly faithful. Folks that say the transition was way off clearly read the comic back in the eighties, because more than half of the comic's scenes are directly in the film, dialogue and all. The same themes are conveyed, aside from the parallel Mariner side story being excluded (to be included in the special features, I hear). Zack Synder is to be commended. Aside from outfit changes, the characters are the same. Most of the alterations to scenes are aesthetic, or cut out for redundancy. To parents out there, you're not very good at your job if you took your kids to the movie and were appalled at the content. This movie isn't rated G or PG13, it's pretty clearly labelled as an adult film. And it's great BECAUSE of not just another comic book movie, it's a bit more meaningful. Also, softcore porn? There were one and a half sex scenes. Have you watched...anything...in the past 30 years...film or otherwise? There were identical scenes in the comic. Archetyping? Watchmen the graphic novel had archetypes. Sorry to rain on fanboy parades there. Expand

Being a fan of the graphic novel, I think that Zack Snyder did faithful job, though I had wished that the side characters had more screen-time (I now have the Director's Cut on Blu-Ray, and they are included a little more, as with a few scenes from the novel that fans will recognize). When I got the said Director's Cut on Blu-Ray, I started to watch it more like a cinema goer who had not read the comic. It immediately went from an 8 to a 9. This is a REALLY GOOD FILM. The acting is terrific (Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Billy Crudup as Doctor Manhattan are standouts), the sets are superb, the music very well placed (the opening credits are perfect, you'll love them even more if you'd read the graphic novel), and the story interesting. Billy Crudup truly brings Doctor Manhattan to life, it is impossible to care for humanity, but he tries so hard to. J.E.H. is definitely the best as Rorchach: He's cool and dark in the mask, but once you see his face, he is absolutely convincing (my favorite part of the movie, among others, was when after he threw the hot oil on a prisoner who was about to shiv him and security is taking him away, he says "What you don't understand... I'm not locked up in here with you... YOU'RE LOCKED UP IN HERE WITH ME!"). What will probably turn some people off is the violence, which is actually more brutal than in the comic. I think that Snyder did this to contrast with normal superhero movies, in which violence is spectacular and you cheer the hero on. This movie is showing that it's not stellar, it's dark, twisted, unpleasant, and sometimes just plain hard to look at. The tones and angles of different shots re-enforce the feeling of a noir movie, which I really like. Most of the people I initially saw the movie with didn't think much of Matthew Goode's portrayal of Ozymandias, but I believe that he made him much more sinister and jaded than in the comic, and I would like to compliment him for that (not like he's reading this review or anything). Plus, a nice touch was the german accent when he spoke in private (you can't exactly do that in the comic, *wink*). Overall, a great movie. In my opinion, it works for both fans of the graphic novel and cinema goers. If you do decide to see this, please get the Director's Cut. It's longer, but it's worth it, especially if you are an initial Watchmen fan. Expand

The Director is Zack Snyder, the man behind the extraordinary 300 (2006). He also directed the simple but effective horror, DAWN OF THE DEAD in 2004. Snyder is a young Director that his track-record never flaw until now. The cinematography on thiz film is still stunning, every scene made with a great detail. The Watchmen original material comes from graphic comic written by Alan Moore. Every character in Watchmen is very unique. The most unique character maybe is Dr. Manhattan, who played by Billy Crudup. The other Casts are: Malin Akerman, Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino , and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Watchmen told a story about a group of super heroes dealing with the society on alternate world in 1985. One side, they needed to maintain peace, and the other side, they had put in distance because of their oddity .The soundtracks support well to give a precise atmosphere during thiz film. The conflict along the plots was in order and proportional. Malin Akerman physical appearance as Silk Spectre II, in my opinion is the best presentation of superhero character. The posture and shape what superhero should looks like appears perfectly. The climax on this movie was also very fair, where we could blurred by who is the bad guys or good guys. Thiz shows us the movie was far mature that seem to be.

Amazing adaptation from the original Graphic Novel written by Allan Moore.
The movie is extremely loyal to the original comic by respecting each character personality, and charm, even the actors used in the film (wich are really good at recreating each character) look like if they just take them straight out of the original Graphic Novel both in dialog and physically.
Even then the movie has his fair share of flaws, the most common consist on just how a couple of scenes that are similar from the Graphic Novel can be much more violent in the movie,
when most of the time there is not a reason on why they would make them that way, the whole atmosphere in wich these scenes take place is already shocking it can transmit the feeling of how important and brutal certain moments of the movie are,
so when they finally come out and add someone chopping off the arms of someone else with a chainsaw, it quite breaks the entire atmosphere of the movie.
There are also a couple of really important moments that are removed from the original Graphic Novel.
For me personally the moments that were removed didn't really affect the flow of the film and they never really leaved me with a tasteless movie experience but i know that fans of the original novel may resent these changes made into the film just like i resent the over the top notch graphic unnecessary violence in some giving the fact that they don't stay true to the novel and,
"in my opinion" can break the flow of the experience.
ha i guess you can also take that as me being one that loved the graphic novel just as much as i loved the film.

I have to pinch myself sometimes that we love in a time where it would be possible for a filmmaker to come this close to reproducing the graphic novel to the big screen with so few compromises. I watch this annually and i highly recommend the extended cut which has a few extra scenes and the animated version of the comic (within a comic!).

Modern SuperheroAs a deconstruction, this movie has aged fantastically given the over saturation of superhero films we've seen since its release. As a film however, it truly shines because it was made before this over-saturation set in. Modern Superhero deconstructions like "The Boys" largely exist just to reciprocate frustration with the genre's persistence. Meanwhile Watchmen was made at a time when Superhero Movies were rarer, before genre fatigue really set in. Because of this the film makes no sly nods to industry tropes or ever feels so self aware its disingenuous. instead the movie looks at the concept of superheroes as a literary archetype, and explores its implications. Unlike more modern deconstructions or parodies of the genre, it's about the actual themes of these stories, not the state of the industry. Beyond that, this is just an incredibly well written and directed film. Brimming with style and rugged charm, this movie is always enthralling and more often than not engaging. As far as I'm concerned it's still Zack Snyder's best work. Expand

Expand

Even if many people (and Alan Moore himself) are convinced that the graphic novel is the best and only possible medium for this story, it doesn't give the film less value. It had to adapt something, and it did in a coherent way.
The most important feature of the graphic novel, three-dimensional characters and philosophy guiding their action, is maintained. The core message is maintained. Many bad reviews come from either people who did not appreciate the graphic novel (hard to imagine, but they exist), or from overly-affectionate fans of it.
It is a ground-breaking superhero movie, cleverly adapted form a ground-breaking graphic novel.

Watchmen, this movie is just brilliant. The movie's got an amazing plot twist, which is built up so well. The cast's acting throughout this movie is pretty solid and so is the dialogue, the dialogue is really good.

Also, the action sequences throughout this movie are very graphic, brutal and gory but they're outstandingly good, especially that prison cell scene.

The cinematography from Larry Fong is pretty good and he captures the scenes pretty well, either that being a scene with the main characters or a graphic action sequence.

Finally, the movie's got a great soundtrack, I think that's another positive for this movie, it's got some amazing songs from start to finish.

The only two negative's, I've got with this movie would have to be why does Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) sound so much like Batman throughout this movie, don't get me wrong he's a brilliant character throughout this movie but why does he sound so much like Batman.

The final negative, I've got with this movie would have to be, why the **** did they use Simon and Garfunkel - The Song Of Silence. The song doesn't make you feel sad at all, all it does, is that it makes you feel the complete opposite. It makes you laugh instead of feel upset, the reason being for this is because on how much it's been memed to death, lol.

Overall, Watchmen is a brilliant movie. The movie's got an amazing plot twist, pretty solid acting, great dialogue, very graphic and brutal action sequences. The movie's also got some pretty good cinematography and it's even got a great soundtrack. It's honestly worth the watch, I'd highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys very graphic and brutal movie's with an amazing plot twist.

The glowing blue man with the transluscent appendage needs a pair of pants, like the lemur from "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" needs pants. Adrian(Matthew Goode) probably doesn't mind that the homoeroticism of "300" escaped its reels and found a new home, in which Dr. Manhattan's nudism probably throws the other Watchmen into a homosexual panic. Quite pointedly, Adrian seems to know Dr. Manhattan(Billy Crudup) better than Laurie(Malin Akerman). While the girlfriend claims that the ultramarine entity is devoid of any compassion towards mankind, Adrian's alter-ego, Ozymanidas, notices the worry creases in the former Jon Osterman's face whenever he's vexed. The Alexander-wannabe watches men, closely. But Laurie should be one to talk, the daring rescue of some people trapped in a burning high-rise that she and Dan a.k.a. Night Owl(Patrick Wilson) attend to, seems more about correcting her new beau's impotence and gettin' their middle-aged ya-yas out, than being selfless and valiant in a derring-do mission in the night air of this alternative New York. It's mere foreplay: the superhero suits they run around in are nothing more than provocative get-ups to get them in the mood. There's something faintly "Seinfeld"-esque about Night Owl and Silk Spectre, and "Watchmen", in general. Like the characters in the Larry David-created sitcom, these superheroes are more interested in saving their own skins- Rorschach(James Earl Haley) warns the other Watchmen about an assassination plot- than saving the skins of others. How apropos that there's a Comedian(Jeffrey Dean Morgan) present. During the interim years of Allan Moore and David Gibbons' breakthrough graphic novel being stuck in developmental hell, Terry Zwigoff's adaptation of Daniel Clowes' "Ghost World" had already lured a portion of the literati into accepting the long-form comic book as a viable art form. "Watchmen" won't convert the holdover naysayers(who pooh-pooh the thought of the comic book as literature, although Allison Bechdel's "Fun Home" and Adrian Tomine's "Shortcomings" are changing more minds), which is a crying shame, since in most fanboy circles, this is the standard-bearer. While it falls short on vision, "Watchmen", more or less, holds your interest for over two hours-plus, and that's no small feat. But still, the bloated thing lacks true transcendence(for instance, the Saul Bellow army won't lay down their dog-eared copies of "The Adventures of Augie March" for this); it's just a comic book movie, albeit a reasonably smart one(not smarter than "Ironman"). And it bears repeating: pants, stat! Expand

The movie never feels overlong (quite an achievement at 2.44 hrs) and the acting is great. Seeing the movie after seeing it panned in so many reviews I was pleasantly surprised. I can absolutely recommend this film to anyone, comic geek or not.

It has its problems, but the Manhattan sequence scored by recycled Philip Glass pieces is cinematic perfection. Not as good, but it will last longer than The Dark Knight simply because of the material.

No sure how anyone could give this a low rating and I think the "yellow" metacritic rating is bunk, since a huge chunk of critics rated it in the "green". This movie is thematically and visually unlike most squeaky clean superhero movies (Dark Knight not withstanding). If big screen superhero action is not your think, don''t both. But I was enthralled from the opening/title sequence onward. Though I will admit it sorta conformed to some superhero cliches in the last act (hence the 8 rating instead of 10). A must see, for sure. Love independent and foriegn films due to philosophical content typically expressed. This film, though not perfect, was fascinating. If you pay attention to politics and the worldwide push for globalization and a NWO, this film is haunting. I went and read the graphic novel afterwards. It is, of course, better. Why make an exact copy in cinematic form? If you want an honest representation, read the novel. As a film, Watchmen was great. It was also fairly close to the novel and dead-on in many aspects. If you have the mental ability to fill in certain shoddy sections of the film, as one does when viewing/reading a comic, then it is pretty damn good. Use your brain, connect the dots, and see this. It is different, haunting, and different. Good stuff. Expand

Needless to say I became an instant fan and have been anticipating this film for quite some time. I recently saw Watchmen and was very pleased with how much attention was given to detail by Zach Snyder. A few element of the story were left out, but the main elements were flawlessly portrayed throughout the entire film. I can see how someone could get lost in the film if they had not read the novel. However, anyone who enjoyed the film, will very much enjoy the graphic novel. GO READ WATCHMEN Expand

As a fan of the original source material I have to say I love the bits they included from the graphic novel, sadly they left some bits out too.
