Some laughs, but pretty unfunny overall.

Walk Hard got me to laugh, but they weren't big laughs. It was more like "ahhh, that's kind of funny." I usually like Apatow's efforts, but his writing co-credits on this film don't do his catalogue justice. Many of the Walk Hard got me to laugh, but they weren't big laughs. It was more like "ahhh, that's kind of funny." I usually like Apatow's efforts, but his writing co-credits on this film don't do his catalogue justice. Many of the gags seem shoehorned into the genre parody and just don't do the job well enough over the course of the film to warrant anything more than a "meh" and a justifiably middle of the road rating. Mr. Apatow has got to stop reading his own press. Not everything that springs forth from his imagination is funny. This certainly isn't. In its proximity to biopics that came out in the last couple of years, it displays the laziness of Mr. Apatow has got to stop reading his own press. Not everything that springs forth from his imagination is funny. This certainly isn't. In its proximity to biopics that came out in the last couple of years, it displays the laziness of the Scary Movie/Date Movie franchise. The Spinal Tap comparisons may not be fair, but they are only natural given the theme, and suffice it to say that Walk Hard suffers in comparison. There were exactly two bits that evinced a bit of comedic imagination: the Beatles' encounter (I am sure much of that was ad libbed by Jack Black, Jason Schwartzmannm, et al) and the Dylan spoof. The rest was no better than a bad SNL skit, extended ad nauseam. Reilly is a decent singer, though. They should have cast him in Sweeny Todd! Expand

Amusing satire on just about every musical biography film ever made, John C Reilly pulls it all off, and gives a talented performance. It does begin to wear thin after an hour or so, but it's a fun movie.

Is it too soon to make jokes about Johnny Cash? I think so, even though "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is meant to skewer the musical biopic more than the man in black himself. I think so, even though "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is meant to skewer the musical biopic more than the man in black himself. Cash fans may cringe at jokes about his legendary drug abuse and estranged relationship with his father. Laughter transcends bad taste, but therein lies the problem with "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story", a lot of the humor inspired by "Walk the Line" is simply not funny. The surreal, and unexpected use of gore will drop jaws. It seems phoned in from another movie. Dewey also tries on so many musical hats, he never comes across as a real artist. The only songs that work are those in the country vein. Brian Wilson fans may bristle at Cox's "Pet Sounds"-influenced sessions. "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is a cold-hearted assemblage of obvious jokes that satirize the drug-addled life of a musical superstar, often without any heart or wit. Expand

Lights years ahead of typical parodies (Meet The Spartans, Epic Movie, etc.), but still disappointing. Reminds me of Will Ferrell's movies, which generally contain a few inspired laughs among unbearably flat scenes that seem to go on forever.

Over the top, not funny enough, and gross when it needs to be sharp, but the music's great and Reilly is ultra good.

Apatow and crew were disappointing this time. The first 30 minutes are hilarious, then the running jokes start to get old.

Pretty funny movie if you were a fan of Anchorman. Some of the jokes made you wonder why the writers put that in there but overall it was put together decently. I liked Anchorman better though...

I'm not a fan of farces, and to be honest, I'm not that crazy about John C. Reilly, but one thing you can be sure of, is that when I see Judd Apatow's name attached to something, I'll eventually see it. Walk Hard is a mocumentary about an Elvis Presley type persona, whose music spanned an evolved over a 50 year career. As styles changed, so did Dewey Cox, his outfits, personality, and his music, it was all very clever. I especially liked when he ran into the Beatles at a monastery in India. Walk Hard has some very funny moments, but this film would be nothing without John C. Reilly. It seems like he's in everything these days and most of the roles are quite forgettable, but Dewey Cox is easily his crowning achievement. Reilly is an actor I don't care for, in a style of film I don't care for, yet I was still very amused by the whole thing. The one negative I can give the film, is that is was exceptionally long for this type of film and it spent far too much time on the early stages of his life. The end of the film felt rushed to avoid it becoming a three hour movie, which to me suggests that maybe it should have been split in two. The inherit problem with comedies is that the longer they are, the more tiresome they become. While I enjoyed the first half of the movie a lot, by the end I really couldn't wait for it to end. Farcical comedies are usually way out there and Walk Hard has some of that, but by and large it was an interesting take on fifty years of American pop culture. The film and it's star far exceeded my expectations and for what it was, I was impressed. Expand

Hit and miss with a recycled premise but it still had enough good moments to make it worth watching. You're missing nothing if you skip it.
