A few minutes into watching his movies everybody sitting in your vicinity seems to disappear and all that remains is you and the gripping story unfolding on screen. He achieves this effect by allowing his films to breathe. Sometimes the camera lingers on scenery. Sometimes it lingers on a person. Either way, it demonstrates a patience in filmmaking that is rare for a first or second-time director, meaning that Peele undoubtedly honed this skill throughout the 53-episode run of his comedy show and was able to successfully apply it to horror.

This duality—comedy and horror—is perhaps the most striking (and successful) component of Peele’s new film ‘Us,’ the follow-up to his Oscar winning debut ‘Get Out.’ There are just as many laughs littered throughout the film as there are moments of shock and tension.

Yet there’s a hollowness to ‘Us,’ as though the burdens of being one of the most prolific creators currently working in Hollywood stunted the overall development of the film. Peele likely took years to write ‘Get Out’ and the astounding density of the story shows. Peele had perhaps half as much time to write ‘Us’—while being twice as busy—and the product speaks for itself.

For example, there’s an interesting red-blue dynamic applied to the costume and set design, but its intended meaning doesn’t always feel consistently applied. Furthermore, one of the on-screen deaths is needlessly unrealistic, while a particular shot setup towards the end of the film tries to be artistic but just doesn’t work … at all.

As a result, it begs the question of whether ‘Us’ is disappointing compared to ‘Get Out,’ or if it’s disappointing entirely on its own.

It sure was nothing as creative and interesting as Get Out. I guess once you get a hit you can put out bullsh*t and fill up the theatre on reputation. I grew up to classics like Invasion of the Body Snatchers & The Fly.. in 2019 you can't give me a movie that starts off with rabits and I have no idea what's going on and expect me to just take it. I mean because you put 2 of the best female actresses together (Handmaids's Tale) and (12 Years A Slave) with a horrible script doesn;t make it okay. I am baffled at these 10's and 8's and also fully convinced that movie critics cannot be trusted. Their ratings are not genuine. This film was crap with great actresses. The little boy and both husbands were so bad I wanted to kill myself in the theatre. I've never been so frustrated through an entire film. Ugh... Never again. Expand

I should have stayed home, though, because it's incomprehensible and not entertaining. A film like "The Matrix" is intellectually challenging, as well as immensely entertaining. You walk away wondering if you could be living in that kind of reality. Philosophers write books about it. "Us" isn't like that at all. The world of "Us" is totally imaginary, impossible and makes no sense.

I think Get Out was much better. I had fun, the jokes were funny, the acting was on par but major plot holes and plausibility problems ruined my suspension of disbelief. Sometimes I felt as though they were trying a bit too hard to try and be scary or creepy, but it ended up just falling flat. I found many of the plot points predictable, and felt the film didn't want to take enough risks at the expense of upsetting the audience. I would have liked to see some plot points fleshed out more. I had fun, but this won't be a film I'm thinking about after seeing it. Expand

Us has brought back a similar disappointment to the one I had with Get Out. And this is due to the way Jordan Peele is getting praised by the critics when frankly his style as a filmmaker is quite simplistic.

Us is being hailed as an excellent work of horror, some people are even calling it a masterpiece of the genre when basically its whole concept is based on different and ambiguous plot pieces that are put together trying to create a more cohesive story that unfortunately doesn't feel original in any way.
Especially because its plot twist can be intuited from the beginning taking into account what you see in that opening scene and that almost all the stories that involve doppelgängers have the same plot twist.

Definitely the film has some good moments. The introduction of the doppelgängers is really creepy and Red's character is very unsettling. The tone in those moments and the use of the score are outstanding but in general, beyond the messages within the story and all the easter eggs inside of it, the film is hardly supported by its structure and the truth is that the horror felt a bit diluted. Yes, there's a lot of mystery and suspense but the horror wasn't as strong as I hoped for.

Once again there are no surprises behind the veil and it's ironic considering that for the second time in a row with Peele, the critics played against him because they made me wait for something more and judging the film with what he delivered, well... that extra step of quality isn't really there.

Relatively early in the movie the plot disintegrates into scenes which are sloppy, illogical, and impossible to piece together. It only gets worse as time goes on. Towards the end, "Us" is painful to watch. Truly a bad movie. It almost makes me depressed to know that this movie was released. How, could any self respecting hollywood producer/director/writer/etc put their stamp of approval on this slapdash nonsense. Worse yet, Peele injects his own toxic and polarizing blend of social opinions. I suspect this may actually be the reason the critic reviews are so skewed to an obviously bad movie. It brought nothing new to the table. Even the opening credits were boring. The beginning of the film was eerie but once the shadows came into the house I knew this film was a let-down. And I was super excited for this film because I LOVED Get Out and the message behind it. I've never before gone to the cinema and actually thought I might leave during the movie, that's how bad this was. However I gave it a chance and sat through the whole thing. Quite frankly, I was completely and utterly bored for the majority of this film. I actually found it hard to watch at times because either the acting was so poor, the jokes completely not funny, or the supposedly scary bits executed so poorly. It was not scary whatsoever. The plot was terrible and I did not think it was "clever" in any way, as most of the reviews on this website are suggesting. The film was totally dragged out and I would not recommend. Expand

There are so many more creative ways he could've answered "why" any of the things in the story were taking place and it seems like he took the least inspired route. It's not a terrible movie, but it really frustrates me when people make this movie out to be an instant classic, because the last one obviously was.

Literally nothing makes sense or pays off in a satisfying way. I love Tim Heidecker, but his presence only adds to the feel that this could've easily been a feature length Tim & Eric's Bedtime Stories, and would've met all expectations.

The story is not compelling, which is what I think most people would've expected most after Get Out, which at no point felt confusing or random. This movie is the exact opposite of that. It never commits to either an ideological or story driven concept except "There are mirror people" and I can't say anything else without spoiling the movies, but the reasons for _why_ there are mirror people never really pays off, though it is explained. It's just not a very satisfying conclusion.

So if the ending is weak, what's left? Not a lot of good laughs. uniquely good scary moments, or even memorable moments. It's not a movie you're going to want to watch twice.

Anyone giving this movie a 10 is pushing an agenda or is working for the guerrilla marketing campaign that badly upsold this movie. Anyone using words like "thought provoking" or "genre defining" or "richly layered, deftly nuanced" are absolutely lying to your face. There is nothing thought provoking about this movie. There is no moral message in this movie.

So many scenes were just dark, as in night, murk, interior, watery dark. That's cheap atmospherics and really boring. Worst of all, I didn't get scared once and certainly wasn't entertained as the body count rose, applying lip gloss took five minutes of screen time and the whole plot just was hammered to death. Could have been million times better but all hollywood is so concerned to dumbify movies so even a pavement stone can understand it. Also I think it doesn't matter if the movie is bad or not. If PR team has the money to buy reviews, the movie gets better ratings. Same goes with doctor sleep. Both US and DOCTOR SLEEP are equally bad and directors / writers should be ashamed of themselves for making such bad movies. While I was watching this, at some point I thought "this is just home alone with a horror theme" and they literally mentioned home alone within 5 minutes. also the part where they were doing with the kill counts were one of the most cringiest dialogue in 2020. This movie has still has a bit of edge but it is definitely more of a trope reliant traditional horror movie than Get Out.

Not really scary, more strange than anything, strange can be good but I don't think they leaned into it enough to payoff.

Lots of laughing by the audience at things that probably weren't meant to be funny.

The "twist" was kind of lame, you can see it coming a mile away; it begs questions that have no good answers and it adds nothing to the movie, would have been much better had they just not addressed it at all.

The performances are good, but the passing didn't work at all and it also has a serious problem of tone, the 1st half is like a slasher film with all the suspense and jump scares, as for the 2nd half the thing is more like a dark comedy and neither is really well done. There are a lot of symbolism and things that will make you have a second thought about the plots and things within this movie but that's it.

I will never recommend it but I also think that maybe this will be the cup of tea of some other.

Stellar acting is hampered by deliberate character ambiguity regarding the motives of the doubles; the movie flip flops between musing over the humanism of these "monsters" and elsewhere reducing them to mindless zombies. Unfortunately, this insistence on both having and eating the cake comes at a cost to the otherwise very compelling metaphor underpinning the film, and turns what should be a jaw-dropping final twist into a brow-furrowing moment of discontent. Peele's social commentary is at times outstanding, and Us also has plenty of truly excellent horror moments, but these two things as a rule never occur in the same scene. Us hits all the bases for modern Western psychological horror (regretfully, even the "enormous unexplained plot holes" base) but the ambition of Peele's concept is held back by his inability to execute it gracefully. The same movie would be much better without amateurish hallmarks like ham-fisted dad jokes, ambiguous sci-fi cop-outs, and immersion-breaking monologues explaining enormous portions of plot. Expand

In the beginning, I thought Peale was doing somethingJust saw US. Liked Get Out better. People who think US is a great horror movie either have never seen The Shining, which makes US look pathetic, or can't get anything more complex than US. In the beginning, I thought Peale was doing something interesting in apparently satirizing the complacency, blandness, and "normality" of contemporary upper-middle-class suburban black professionals, and showing them that they are culpable for doing their best to wear "Howard" sweats as symbols of how they've left their shadow selves in the ghetto behind. But when Peale doubles their white upper-middle-class pals, too, suddenly the movie is incoherent. If Peale's trying to show whites in his audience that they are just as bad for forgetting about their own poor white, low rent "shadow," that be okay. But by showing all the red horror figures of either race as shadows of the American middle-class masses epitomized by the vapid idiocy of "Hands Across America" Peale is shooting fish in a barrel. It's all to easy and simple-minded. Kubrick was a genius. Geniuses produce works of art as complex and mysterious as genius itself. Peale's just a talented journeyman Hollywood director who gets overrated because he's black and black directors are still too rare. US is sort of the horror genre version of the action genre megabit Black Panther. Both films are shallow and ultimately rather empty, but they get lots and lots of extra points for the blackness of the principles involved. This overrating of works by blacks is actually a form of patting them on the head, as if it's "amazing" "they" can do so well, when their "so well" would have gotten a yawn from whites. Moonlight is incomparably the best black film in American history, on every level, and is one of the great American films period. It makes US look like a crude comic book. Black Klansman, not to mention Do the Right Thing, was a much better movie than US. Expand

- Incredibly infantile & absurd plot (i.e. secret cloning lab under amusement park...)

- The absurd behavior of the main character, who remembers being a clone only at the end of the movie. The question is why did she realize it so late? after all, at the time of the change she was already a conscious child, so she should remember this situation well - Clones that spend their entire lives on imitating their counterparts can only grotesquely howl when confronted with the originals(who supervised their training? CIA? lol)

- I do not want to mention more, because the plot itself shows disrespect towards the viewer and offends his intelligence I don't know what was the reason for so many positive reviews (although I can guess)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow, this is something...

First of all credit is there credit is due: the acting and cinematography is fantastic, hands down.
The first half or so of the movie is tense and creepy. It was awesome, as awesome as you could expect.

As for the second half... well, all starts fall apart. To the point where it becomes plain stupid and incoherent when you just think about it just for a bit...

If the ending was left ambiguous and fuzzy - it may be alright, but explanation given us is so, so painfully not thought out:
1) If the main character is actually a "shadow" and don't have a "soul" all this time - why the hell she's actually scared for her kids and husband and behaves like, well, human being? Why the "shadow" who is actually a real human behaves like creepy lunatic?
2) So, someone really build this underground... facilities?.. fill them with "shadows" for some reason and them just left them there with open doors, no guards or security? Even supplied them this jumpsuits uniform and golden scissors? And one day they just kind of walk out and start murdering people?
3) Are this facilities maintained by someone? Are this someone did find strange that suddenly one of "shadows" is chained to the bed and can speak and behave like real human?
3) It's shown that "shadows" eat _only_ raw rabbits for some reason, but rabbits need food and care too. Who the hell supplied with and/or cared for rabbits all this time? Rabbits are not cheapest nor easiest way to get food by far...also living underground without sun on raw-meat diet cannot possibly be healthy, so how "shadows" possible be as healthy and strong as real humans?..
4) It is said and shown that "shadows" mimics their real humans counterparts but only the youngest son shown to have connection with his shadow in this way, all others just went loose...
5) Random attraction on a beach visited by hundreds of people is actually an unsecured entry point to the what should be top level secret government (is it specified it is actually government or just implied? I may have forgot) black-site prison-like operation. Yeah...
6) Aside from main characters none of the real humans shown alive after the events. They are implied by the helicopters though, yet still...

I really, really wanted to like this film, Get Out was superb and trailers was good, but that's just a mess. Where "Get Out" was actually logical and pretty realistic (with acceptable level of suspension of disbelief of course) "Us" is just went full "The Happening" level of WTF.

The movie is a 5/10 at best and I give Get Out a 8/10 easily. Us is just a poor execution of a decent idea. I created an account just to illuminate the blatant discrepancy between reviews. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was expecting much more out of this movie after enjoying "Get Out" so much. The hard truth is that "Us" fails to connect on even the most base level. It makes no sense how or why any of the events are transpiring. They "explain" it kind of but it's still nonsense. The ultimate twist/reveal was so hackneyed and predictable I almost schvitzed. Acting was good and the cinematography was good but the overall story and execution simply left too much to be desired. The movie feels rather slow and even cheesy at times, keeping you watching by not answering the lingering questions you may have had from the beginning; only hinting at potential answers during various scenes. However, the film fails to fully commit to any overarching meaning it seems to be reaching for. Instead, the meaning generated by the answers to those lingering questions remains contained within the limited context of the world within the movie; basically insignificant, once the movie ends. I waited on this film for a long time, and honestly, if had seen it seen it day one it would still not have been worth the wait.

The biggest issue is the worldbuilding. No part of the scenario makes sense. At all. I would like to get more into it... but years later at this point I doubt I would add anything no one else already had. The political message also really doesn't work either, given that the "normal" people don't even know that the dopplegangers even exist.

It's kind of interesting in it's own way. A class critique from a man who brilliantly understands metaphors, but who absolutely doesn't understand complex worldbuilding and even less understands poverty.

Skip it.

The only redeeming quality, is Lupita Nyong'o's performance, which was excellent(which is the only reason I gave it a 2 rating). What a mess. Jordan Peele creatively subverts the home-invasion genre in "Us." But Ugh, that ending!

The first half is outstanding. Lupita Nyong'o is excellent as always -- she's a moody complex character which makes complete sense after the "big reveal." Once that "big reveal" happens, suspending disbelief is difficult, even for a horror movie. It is almost as if they came up with the main premise, than spit-balled an explanation. The explanation / back story is so absurd it requires way too much exposition.

Here's hoping Peele gets more grounded in his third act.

Coming off of the well deserved success of "Get Out," Jordan Peele delivered us another potential smash hit with "Us." I really enjoy Peele's work, I like what he's doing with movies and I think "Get Out" really opened a lot of people's eyes with just how good Peele can be. "US" unfortunately represents a bit of a sophomore slump for Peele, which is unfortunate because this cast was fantastic. The film also had a good soundtrack, comedy that hit really well and did provide some intense moments of fear but unfortunately, the plot here is absolutely riddled with holes, especially towards the end that almost completely undoes everything this film does well. You can drive a truck through some of these plot holes, a lot of the things regarding the Tethered people make absolutely no sense and it drags this movie almost to a disappointing halt. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is very bipolar. Performances are solid across the board, the music and direction are all excellent, it's just a shame that the script is sub par. Us is just another example of the decline in Hollywood writing. The movie appears to be trying to make a statement about the socio-political issues first and an enjoyable horror movie as a distant memory.
This is made wholly evident by the scores of the critics vs the audience.

How could anyone, government or otherwise, have the time resources, infrastructure and staff to create all those clones. Why would you create so many if they had no purpose. How do the clones behave when you are driving or flying? Why did Red not mimic Adelaide? why didnt other clones just leave? why didn't Red leave earlier? Why create clones designed to kill their "originals" purely for the reason of the originals not knowing that they exist.

Great Acting, terrible script.

A thing of beauty - with a major flaw that reveals itself in the final act and then ripples back, revealing a fault line that runs through the whole story.

You’re going to have to decide if that flaw will ruin this for you or if you can ignore it and enjoy the ride. The level of disbelief that Mr. Peele asks the audience to suspend, all the questions that the big reveal leaves us with and that Peele asks us not to wonder about - it left me feeling frustrated. But I’ve watched it a few times now, and the riveting performances within it, the masterfully fluid shifts in tone; I can’t help but love this.

I’ve decided to love it for what it is instead of resenting it for what it might’ve been.

The performances are really memorable and engaging, with Lupita easily being my favorite part of the film. The cinematography was interesting throughout and I loved the film’s theme (Anthem), even though the rest of the soundtrack left a little more to be desired. I just found myself disappointed with the plot and where it goes in the 2nd and 3rd acts. A fantastic film that must be watched more than once. If you don't like this film: you don't understand why it was made and what it symbolizes

It becomes a full slasher movie after the first hour, there's no more mystery at all. I was wondering how they're going to go back to horror/mystery after the "enemies" become fully revealed and start parading around on the screen. It becomes silly and boring instead, horrors are best when there's still some mystery around the "enemy". That's why pacing is really important to keep the tension. This movie completely lost that tension after an hour.

The backstory of the "enemies" is short, wish they would explain a bit more about them. The plot twist was kind of expected and it didn't surprise me at all. At that point, the movie was already full slasher and the main character was behaving like a blood craving supervillain. I mean she went out of the car alone into the woods to kill confirm one of the enemies and left her family behind to go all John Rambo for that last boss fight.

If you're looking for a shallow slasher movie, this movie is all for you. If you're looking for an actual horror movie, look elsewhere. Seems like critics always rate "horror" movies highly when they're not scared. This movie is miles behind movies like Insidious/Hereditary/Drag me to hell if you're talking about scariness/tension.

This movie can't get more than a 6 from me and that's me being generous because it's a 5.5 at most. Lesson learned, don't trust critics!

As a side note: It's nice that the cast is mostly black, the movie is kinda enforcing stereotypes that all black people just listen to hip-hop all the time. I'm black myself and listen to all types of music!

I was fooled by the good rating to watch this movie. This movie was so bad that I had to make an account just to give it a rating it deserves. 2/10 for the idea and a decend beginning.

A lot of illogical moments and characters that seem like they are retarded. I can't even comprehend how professional critics praised this mess and also how can someone actually like this? This isn't horror, and you don't even need jumps cares or deaths to make horror, but almost every scene from this trash looks like Scary Movie. Please if you liked this, reconsider your taste.
Not recommended under any circumstances unless you want a movie to laugh

The film affects the viewer at a different mental level. Until the middle of the film, nothing is clear at all, and only towards the end do the motives and actions of the clones become clear. The main plot twist is so perfectly inscribed in the plot that some details become clear only at the end of the film. Yes, Jordan Peele knows how to shoot psedochorrors, but personally I liked Us more than Get Out. Maybe because there's no BLM subpoena here. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first 15 minutes are interesting, then everything goes down the toilet, nothing makes sense, and the "twist" ending is very silly. Not scary and too long, feels pretentious at times, the story is full of holes, and the characters are not likable at all. Feels like a trend lately... Expand

Good thriller with unsettling acting and scenes. Didn’t get the meaning until after but interesting to say the least.

THE GOOD: Jordan Peele's hability to create powerful images is unmatched. Cinematography, score and Lupita Nyongo are the stand-outs.

THE BAD: The script and dialogues are clumsy and the final reveal/payoff is less impactful than what it should be.

Esta es mi pelicula favorita de Jordan Peele.
El suspenso que maneja la pelicula en el tercer acto es asombroso.
