By the end of the film everything just gets so pretentious and ridiculous you're shaking your head in disbelief. Then, seeing as you're so dumbfounded as to what just happened you have to go online to read about it and then end up shaking your head even more. And don't tell me for a second anyone giving this film a great review understood what was going on symbolically while they watched it. Underneath this political garbage there's actually quite an intense horror, which is such a shame, because if Peele just concentrated on making an entertaining, believable and coherent film instead of ramming his political agenda down our throats, we'd walk away more entertained. Another thing that let it down was the script. Why are this family making jokes whilst they're being stalked and treating it all so light heartedly? It makes the mood so jarring. Everything was great with this film until you start having things 'explained,' and then it just gets farcical. Absolute nonsense. Expand

I've never written a review, but this movie was so awful and the critics so wrong, I felt morally obligated to save people from wasting their money. I really liked Get Out & was hoping this would be as good, but it was one of the worst moviesI've never written a review, but this movie was so awful and the critics so wrong, I felt morally obligated to save people from wasting their money. I really liked Get Out & was hoping this would be as good, but it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. There were so many fundamental plot holes I couldn't stop thinking of them for hours. Spoilers ahead, so don't read this if you want to see this movie, but I suggest you do not. Who created all the duplicates and where did they go? How, exactly are the duplicates controlling the actions and thoughts of people. If the duplicates can control every movement of humans than why did they need to go up to the surface and kill them? They could make them commit suicide or murder each other. They could make humans torture themselves from a comfortable distance. What was the purpose of controlling human's every tiny action and thought? They didn't seem to be doing anything particularly meaningful with this power. How would the millions of them shown holding hands across America fit in the basement of that building? Why were they standing holding hands anyway? Is that as far as their master plan takes them? I'm trying to imagine Nyong'o's character talking the duplicates into doing this--"Hey, lets get revenge on the people we are controlling by murdering them with scissors and then stand holding hands across America" (What?!) Why did they suddenly stop killing people? There were clearly more humans to kill (somebody was flying those helicopters at the end). Had American law enforcement and military capabilities deteriorated to the point they couldn't kill duplicates with scissors? Had all the guns in the U.S. disappeared? Where did they get all those scissors and those silly red jump suits anyway? There was nothing to eat but rabbits for the duplicates in the basement...but who was feeding the rabbits and where did they get the food for them? Why were the rabbits there in the first place? Where is all the rabbit poop? Why would the Nyong'o struggle to get a fireplace poker to break the coffee table she was handcuffed to? It's a coffee table-it's not bolted to the floor-just slide it over. The "surprise ending" occurred to me at the beginning of the movie. Speaking of the surprise ending, how are we supposed to believe the duplicate Nyong'o would have repressed her memory of being a duplicate? Repressed memories and PTSD occur after traumatic circumstances. Her switching places to enter a much better world would be something to celebrate--there's no reason for amnesia. To be fair, there were moments when the cinematography was very good (ie. the shot of the shadows walking on the beach--yes, I got the symbolism). The beginning was suspenseful, I couldn't be surprised or afraid after about 20-30 minutes, though, because the ridiculous plot quickly became so distracting. I can't figure out why anyone could rate this movie highly. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I found this movie to be quite a letdown. Upon seeing the trailer, I was hyped, considering it's one of my favorite trailers in recent memory and Get Out was quite fantastic. This movie did lot live up to expectations, though.

It started off with quite a drag. A lot of shots and scenes were a lot longer than they should have been. It takes about 30 minutes to even get going.

I was intrigued to get to know what the killers were because the trailer was so vague, but upon learning what they were, I couldn't help but feel a major letdown.

The other doppelgängers seemed to kill off their victims really quick and easily (seemed like in seconds), yet this is the only family who is fighting back? Didn't seem to make much sense. Several plot holes here and there. The ending felt very rushed and I was not satisfied with the conclusion. It was very long, actually too long. My friend and I were close to falling asleep.

It's very pretty and well-acted, but that doesn't make it good in any sense of the word. I wanted to love this. And I couldn't wait to see it. But after seeing it, I didn't like it. At all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I felt it fitting that my first ever review of a movie be this one. I simply could not let it lie the disappointment I felt once the credits began to roll. Although the relief was equally welcomed. What makes it worse is the disparity in review scores between your average movie goer and the "professional" critics. There seems to be a clear delusion that I can only assume is influenced by other external factors as opposed to sheer honesty and merit. This film holds its own, briefly, at the beginning. A small prologue of events paves the way for several minutes of mystery and curiosity of what is to come. This very quickly leads forward to the scene, everyone has seen in the trailers, where there "is a family on the driveway". From then onwards it spirals into a tornado of flawed plot holes and complete identity crisis. I sincerely felt as if the film had a complete meltdown and had no idea what it wanted to give to me. The characters fall short of providing any form of adrenaline inducing horror and, on more than several occasions, become laughable. Caveman noises, and screeching like dinosaurs, is about as odd as it gets. If I had shut my eyes, I would have been convinced I had gone back to 1993 to watch Jurassic Park for the first time. I specifically remember the part where Winston Dukes character has a tumble with his shadowy counterpart, pulls himself out of the lake onto his boat, and stops with just one foot dangling into the murky abyss thus allowing his attacker to leap from the water and carry on his assault (Surprise!) .... The comedic gasp from the movie screen echoed as if to say, "Are you kidding me with this cliché rubbish that has been done to absolute death". From that point I felt the audience, in unison, switched off. I certainly did.

The stronger performances were overshadowed by the flat storyline which struggles to gain any traction for the best part of 80% of the movie. This ultimately leads onto the most glaringly obvious “twist” I have ever witnessed. You wouldn’t need Holmes along for the ride to figure this one out. A lot was left unexplained and not in a good way, in the way where you think “what was the point”. Plenty could have been sacrificed to offer a more reinforced backstory and offer the depth this tale so desperately needed. I genuinely had high hopes for this movie. I really wanted to like it and love it. And I persevered throughout but the inevitable white flag moment came and, once the movie ended, I was happy to surrender back to reality, somewhat deflated at the missed opportunity.
The cast deserved much more from the narrative, and direction, to support and showcase their skills but unfortunately it was not meant to be. I seriously doubt I would watch this a second time as I feel there is nothing more that can be offered. If you are on your way to watch this then I recommend you lower your expectations to allow for a modicum of enjoyment, otherwise choose something else.

While the film was obviously trying to keep its audience mind blown with the plot and twists i was too busy being mind blown how this movie kept taking itself to new levels of **** the more i watched it. The film started out promising but takes a turn for the worst. Did Jordan Peele even watch his own film? I wish i could get my god damn money back, i nearly walked out but stayed hoping for an ending that might justify buying the ticket only to be disappointed by the predictable twist that a **** film like this would take. Unfortunately, this movie didn't live up to my expectations after "Get Out". It had an interesting beginning but it sort of gave away its plot and if you slightly pay attention you can pretty much figure it out long before the ending.
The acting is pretty neat and the way it's filmed sort of holds it up quite well.
I was surprised by the soundtrack, which was quite good, fun. It definitely felt like an interesting take on the horror genre but sadly it falls short.
The whole plot was just sort of...boring.
Still worth a watch but there are better choices out there.
I'm sure Jordan Peele can do much better than this.

+ Good acting
+ A well-shot film
+ Not bad soundtrack
+ Good movie elements

- Not much of a horror
- Predictable
- The plot was weak
- Doesn't really go anywhere

Overall it's slightly below average.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't waste your time watching this film, totally shallow, meaningless, too weak. It only got good grades in the "specialized" critics because the cast is mostly black including the director himself, so afraid of the social justice and the politically correct, they gave good score for the film but if you are going to see the users' grade is low. I just don't give a score 0 because the performance of Lupita and Shahadi are very expressive and well done, because all other characters are generic and without expression (it is worth mentioning the character made by Winston Duke, totally pathetic and despicable, How could a man of that size, with that height and weight can not kill a simple child or tries to kill an adult with a **** FLARE GUN????), this is an offense to the good movies of terror and suspense already made!!! "US" & "THEM"
Hailing from MADtv and veering off into the critically acclaimed series, Key&Peele, Jordan Peele loves a good story. More than that, he loves getting his hands dirty writing a good thriller. Unfortunately, to his quiet desperation all grapes of concept have been stomped and pressed in ways that only with ‘sleight of pen-in-hand’ will another writer be able to work around a plagiaristic endeavor … kind of, unnoticed. Then again, not quite, for plagiarism of concept for just about everything is inevitable resulting in triggering our recall compatibility and overwhelming déjà vu sense of familiarity. “Haven’t we all been in here before?”

Needless to say, it has hardly ever stopped the long arm of the shoplifter which extends beyond that of the law. And it did not stop Peele from lifting off the concept of “THE INVITATION” two years prior to his 2017 release ; WHITE boyfriend with BLACK girlfriend driving along to an invitation that turns out to be a cult gathering. On the way they crash into a deer (jump scare thrown in for good measure) and kill it.

However, in Peele’s “GET OUT” the genders are reversed ; BLACK boyfriend with WHITE girlfriend driving along to an invitation that turns out to be a cult gathering. On the way they crash into a deer (jump scare thrown in for good measure) and kill it.

By the way, did I mention this is a rip-off?

Yet with all that glaring similarity in plain sight little did we stop to sense the blast wave of déjà vu but proceeded to carry the director on our shoulders with the victory chant of originality. That said, Peele’s gone and done it again with his 2019 release, “Us”. He had subtly-blatantly plagiarized the concept of “THE OTHERS” (Nicole Kidman, 2001) with more emphasis on jump scares to make up for the lack of intellectual content, complete with a supposed, but highly implausible twist at the end.

His title, “Us” being a derivation of the ‘Us and Them’ phrase is a dead giveaway in the parallel storyline of “THE OTHERS”. Case in point of ‘sleight of hand’ writing is having substituted the title, “THE OTHERS” … with “Us”. The result is a hybrid of New York arty-farty, pretentious avant-garde and “WALKING DEAD” theatrics glazed over with the idiotrics of Shyamalan’s epic foiled “THE HAPPENING”.

This is nothing but a been-there-done-that flick which is survived solely by Michael Abels’ thunderous soundtrack. Jordan’s gargantuan persona shaped and gained by the mastery of shocking socio-racial content in “GET OUT” has reduced and relegated him back to the quirky comedian [horror-director-wannabe] which is Key&Peele.

Good acting? Lupita Nyongo (though some of her parts under Jordan Peele’s over-the-top direction may have made her look stupid)

Bad acting? Get that father and son, Winston Duke & Evan Alex off the set!

Highlights of movie: Every single time Michael Abels score comes on. And, oh yes … the clear high voice of Brian Wilson accompanied by the iconic Hammond organ when “Good Vibration” is played.

Enjoyable part of movie experience: Trailer of "PET SEMATARY" before the movie started.

Peele has once again forced a certain propoganda in his new mess, and the PC critics jumped on the HYPETRAIN to blow this up just like get out, which was also ridiculous and even racist towards white people. The man is also unoriginal and rips off other films of the past that the youth of today is too naiev to realize. Get Out ripped off Stepford wives and skeleton key. Us ripped off invasion if the body snatchers and the srangers. A movie of two halves. It started off well with an interesting premise but by the second half the plot went of the rails and became absurd. It's difficult to explain without going into spoilers. In a nutshell, this movie sucked.

I rarely am an opening weekend moviegoer but I felt I must go see 'Us'. My suggestion: wait until your next long distance flight.

Very high production value, but as you zoom out from the story you find yourself saying, "wait, what? thats ridiculous" for so many spots in the movie. The overall plot just doesn't really land and I'd call this one a dud.

It didn't help that there were several moments that were definitely supposed to be tense that the direction and acting make me have to hold in my desire to laugh. Unless I'm in the dark here and this was intended to be more 'spoof' leaning I would say that Jordan Peele missed the mark on many moments in this film and as the scope of the story widens it really loses itself. Too ambitious for sure.

I'm sorry but its tough to have any faith in critics that would give this movie a rating anywhere above a 60

I grew up to classics like Invasion of the Body Snatchers & The Fly.. in 2019 you can't give me a movie that starts off with rabits and I have no idea what's going on and expect me to just take it. I mean because you put 2 of the best female actresses together (Handmaids's Tale) and (12 Years A Slave) with a horrible script doesn;t make it okay. I am baffled at these 10's and 8's and also fully convinced that movie critics cannot be trusted. Their ratings are not genuine. This film was crap with great actresses. I should have stayed home, though, because it's incomprehensible and not entertaining. A film like "The Matrix" is intellectually challenging, as well as immensely entertaining. You walk away wondering if you could be living in that kind of reality. Philosophers write books about it. "Us" isn't like that at all. The world of "Us" is totally imaginary, impossible and makes no sense.

Relatively early in the movie the plot disintegrates into scenes which are sloppy, illogical, and impossible to piece together. It only gets worse as time goes on. Towards the end, "Us" is painful to watch. Truly a bad movie. It almost makes me depressed to know that this movie was released. How, could any self respecting hollywood producer/director/writer/etc put their stamp of approval on this slapdash nonsense. Worse yet, Peele injects his own toxic and polarizing blend of social opinions. I suspect this may actually be the reason the critic reviews are so skewed to an obviously bad movie. It brought nothing new to the table. Even the opening credits were boring. The beginning of the film was eerie but once the shadows came into the house I knew this film was a let-down. And I was super excited for this film because I LOVED Get Out and the message behind it. I've never before gone to the cinema and actually thought I might leave during the movie, that's how bad this was. However I gave it a chance and sat through the whole thing. Quite frankly, I was completely and utterly bored for the majority of this film. I actually found it hard to watch at times because either the acting was so poor, the jokes completely not funny, or the supposedly scary bits executed so poorly. It was not scary whatsoever. The plot was terrible and I did not think it was "clever" in any way, as most of the reviews on this website are suggesting. The film was totally dragged out and I would not recommend. Expand

This is movie much much worse! There's a limit to one's suspension of belief, this was just too much! it felt like it was either originally written as a children's "horror" book or not much attention was paid to it.

There's a good story that could have been made, it's a pity the execution was poor.

I've seen better B slashers with more insightful moral messaging. This turkey dragged, I nodded off at one point, I think when there was bloody gurgling. So many scenes were just dark, as in night, murk, interior, watery dark. That's cheap atmospherics and really boring. Worst of all, I didn't get scared once and certainly wasn't entertained as the body count rose, applying lip gloss took five minutes of screen time and the whole plot just was hammered to death. Could have been million times better but all hollywood is so concerned to dumbify movies so even a pavement stone can understand it. Also I think it doesn't matter if the movie is bad or not. If PR team has the money to buy reviews, the movie gets better ratings. Same goes with doctor sleep. Both US and DOCTOR SLEEP are equally bad and directors / writers should be ashamed of themselves for making such bad movies. - The absurd behavior of the main character, who remembers being a clone only at the end of the movie. The question is why did she realize it so late? after all, at the time of the change she was already a conscious child, so she should remember this situation well - Clones that spend their entire lives on imitating their counterparts can only grotesquely howl when confronted with the originals(who supervised their training? CIA? lol)

- I do not want to mention more, because the plot itself shows disrespect towards the viewer and offends his intelligence I don't know what was the reason for so many positive reviews (although I can guess)

I waited on this film for a long time, and honestly, if had seen it seen it day one it would still not have been worth the wait.

The biggest issue is the worldbuilding. No part of the scenario makes sense. At all. I would like to get more into it... but years later at this point I doubt I would add anything no one else already had. The political message also really doesn't work either, given that the "normal" people don't even know that the dopplegangers even exist.

It's kind of interesting in it's own way. A class critique from a man who brilliantly understands metaphors, but who absolutely doesn't understand complex worldbuilding and even less understands poverty.

Skip it.

This isn't horror, and you don't even need jumps cares or deaths to make horror, but almost every scene from this trash looks like Scary Movie. Please if you liked this, reconsider your taste.
Not recommended under any circumstances unless you want a movie to laugh

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first 15 minutes are interesting, then everything goes down the toilet, nothing makes sense, and the "twist" ending is very silly. Not scary and too long, feels pretentious at times, the story is full of holes, and the characters are not likable at all. Feels like a trend lately... Expand

Objectively a bad movie full of plot holes. This is another one of those films that you’re supposed to like more than I actually do. Infumable. Desde el primer momento te sientes desapegado de los personajes, diálogos y actuaciones más que mediocres, suspense que se rompe en cuanto aparece esfumando cualquier posibilidad de terror.
