The beginning and then the stalking scenes were thoroughly enjoyable. But as the movie progressed I understood less and less of what was going on and why exactly. Why make the doubles, why did they sometimes mimic the 'above ground' people, other times not, why did the doubles seek revenge on their counterparts and not the government? Why only eat raw rabbit? So many questions, I simply didn't 'get it' apparently. Expand

It was suspenseful, especially the middle act. The big twist ending is easily predicted within the first 30 minutes. It’s a shame that Peele went for the suspense/twist ending again in his second run. It doesn’t work here.

Would have been a better and more suspenseful story if they just revealed the truth near the beginning of the movie instead of thinking no one will guess it right. I suppose there are countless areas of symbolism in the film, but the backstory of the antagonists is handled very ham-fistedly and leaves you shaking your head. I’ve seen worse explanations in other films, but this is pretty vague and requires major suspension of disbelief buy in. I think the movie would have been better served with a supernatural explanation vs what they actually went for.

I hope Peele doesn’t go the way of Shamaylan, continually trying to capture that same shocking twist ending in all of his movies. Just make a good suspenseful thriller, but perhaps let the audience in on the secret early in the film but hide it from the actors. Take a different angle.

I’m sure Peele will go a different direction in his next film. I suspect this movie will do well opening weekend but drop off in ticket sales second week.

The acting and cinematography vary between competent and great, but the script here is just embarrassing, especially after the extremely compelling Get Out. It feels like it wants to be two or three different movies, and doesn't do a good job at any of them. If you watch and enjoy a lot of mediocre horror movies, this one is at least more original than many, but anyone who likes to think about the films they watch will walk away annoyed. Expand

I appreciated some of the clever ideas and writing that was in it, but ultimately found that it didn't live up to the hype too much for me. This was also kinda the case for me with this film as well. It follows a family in their summer vacation home who find themselves being terrorized by doppelgangers of themselves. Interesting concept, wasted potential. It explored these ideas more so rather than fully invested in them, which disappointed me. The character's choices and decisions were also questionable and ridiculous at times, and the ending, while clever, wasn't really much of a payoff and I felt more confused and underwhelmed by it than anything else. Overall, like I said, interesting ideas, but they didn't come together or work as well as I had hoped. Expand

There is a "mirror world" where we have the typical "evil twin" (Doppelgänger) and these arrive to take over our places. If they were from another universe, dimension, alternate reality or mirror reality, it would make sense, but in the end it turns out that they are clones that live underground hidden from the surface. How can billions live in those places? How do they feed? Why did the government make those clones? Many holes in the plot. And that final "twist" emulating Shyamalan: TOTALLY PREDICTABLE. None of us in the cinema seemed good. People mocked when things happened. At the end of the movie you DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING about how unlikely it is. I didn't connect with it, it didn't touch me. That been said, Lupita's performance is superb, great interpretation. Expand

In my city, in one theater it's hogging up seven screens including the IMAX, and that is overdoing it at the expense of other films out that I'm doubtful will ever be shown locally. Having seen "Get Out", a really twisted horror tale mixed with racial commentary, I had high hopes for "Us". But I can only muster up six points because despite the great acting, requiring all the principle characters to take on double roles, and really showcasing their obvious talents, as the film progresses messily toward the final act of what is supposed to reveal the secrets behind the scenario of body doubles killing their "normal" originals, it is left up to much assumption. Yes, there are some twists here. No decent horror movie should be without them. But Peele deliberately has left far too much detail hanging - such as, who created these doubles in the first place and why? And, if, as the film suggests, they are nationwide, where the hell is law enforcement, the Army, etc.? Socially it's an odd duck. I do not know exactly what Peele is trying to imply here, unless it's facing the worst fears of anybody - ourselves. I have my faults, but I'm not afraid of myself. But if you don't sweat some obvious lacks in details and don't mind the lack of a true resolution and climax, "Us" is okay. However, another film out, "Captive State" has been criticized for not closing the plot holes, whereas I thought it did so in fine style, keeping you pinned to the seat until the very end of the film. So, if you want a thriller type movie that actually has an ending, you may want to think twice about "Us." Expand

A movie with metaphoric hints at the state of racial tension in America. In the same vein as M Night Shyamalan Jordan Peele is building a name for himself with metaphoric meaning and political messages being dropped all over his movies even in the face of hurting the plot and coherency. There are numerous and many unmistakable follies left in the film holes a mile long. It's a mash up of various skits that don't make sense but in this case, the skits are replaced with symbolism that inherently have more meaning to the director than anyone else. Most if not nearly everyone will leave the theater scratching their head wondering why there were so many artist renditions of metaphoric messages.

Jordan Peele is the equivalent of May Ling Lu or Chris Ofili selling **** to idiots, and they're paying millions.

It's absurd, pretentious, and lacks any real creativity. Idiots are eating that **** sandwich however and paying hundred bucks just to taste it.

You thought one way, the movie went another way revealed the trick of where you assumed wrong like a magician. The low budget didn't spoil its cleverness and fun. In comes "Us" with an even creepier atmosphere but also features stronger political imagery. Sadly, while there are big points for a creepy style, visuals and a terrific performance by Lyong'o, the story is too clever for itself. It leads you into misdirection from the beginning and completely forgetting that it's supposed to resolve why you thought right and the film swung left. The big reveal does not resolve at all. It laughs in the face of the viewer trying to make sense of why anyone would act the way they would if you knew from the movie's outset. The answer is that the actions of the characters are based upon false assumptions. And this is why you'll see so many dislike and are frustrated by this movie.

Case in point without spoilers. Why would a family stand still, without movement, for a long time in the driveway of a family's home? A: Because that's what all low budget creepy crappy slasher films do in order to create "an atmosphere" of terror. And the film's reveal about who the victims are in this film are just as wooden, hollow and phony. Had this film been less a vehicle of praise by liberal reviewers (who are clearly terrified to say anything critical about a certain niche of directors and actors), this film would have received a 5 at best for a great atmosphere, great Lyong'o, and a lousy, illogical, sloppy, lazy script by a director who had a certain class of people and nationalities to blame and let social media loose with its insipid insinuations. The number of plot holes and illogic is literally in the dozens and it's very disappointing that it's all style with no substance or consistency. My review - fun to watch the first 2/3, a frustrating reveal and not a movie you'll watch again.

I looks like the author start writing horror script but in the middle of doing it changed his mind and continued writing trash comedy. Hotestly, in the beginning it was horror but afterwards you cannot scare a 5 year old child with this! The script is flat and full of holes, but it is unrealistic even for a low budget horror (which is not, by the way). Again - you cannot compassionate with characters at all because everything happening around them is so stupid that it becomes fun, and after some time you get bored. But, hold on - in the end you get such a terrible twist in the tale that you will not believe your eyes. Somebody here wrote it was obvious. No. I also thought while watching this, that it may end up like this, but was sure it is too much even for this movie. No, it was not. The director really did it. You get the most stupid conclusion and kind of open ending. I simply do not understand high critics score. These high-browed educated intellectuals cumulitavely gave 42 to Glass movie and 81 to Us. What is wrong with you??? The good things here are cameraman work, light, young actors are good too. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: Cinematography, acting, set design, lighting, and the soundtrack. Cons: The story doesn't feel fully flushed-out, doesn't really make a lot of sense, and sets up so many things that have no pay off. For a film advertised to be a horror film, all of the tension in the film is lost as soon as the doppleganger family gets in the house. From there, we go on this unexpected journey that only kind of makes sense, but is ultimately unsatisfying. I think this film is worth watching, but I don't think Jordan Peele and his team was given enough time to really create a masterpiece, and instead made a very sophisticated but ultimately rushed film. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While Jordan Peele is talented, and Lupita Nyong'o's performance is exquisite, this movie is way overhyped. The children are never in peril (only white teenagers seem to be expendable in this movie) and it's one of those setups where the killer has several chances to kill the protagonists, but just toy with them long enough for them to escape with torn clothes. I was waiting for this film to be scary, but even though some parts of the story are intriguing, when you find out the reveal of what's going on, it becomes stupid and implausible. Get Out worked because the story was simple, but well executed, as all good horror movies should be. This is an example of Peele making up some "cool ideas" that go nowhere in the end. I hope his next movie is worth the overpriced ticket because this one definitely was not. Expand

I was a huge fan of Get Out, so I had to go see this, naturally, assuming it would be just as good as its predecessor. I was unfortunately hit with a movie that garnered more laughs from the audience than scares. The plot was more of a mockery, like Scream or Scary Movie and that's not at all what Peele intended it to be. The performances were good (Particularly from Nyong'o) and the soundtrack was stellar, just like Get Out. Sadly, this can't make up for a boring, unoriginal plot. The movie was not very engaging, but it had its memorable moments and it wasn't absolutely awful. Honestly, Annihilation is a similar but much better movie than this, so I recommend watching that instead. Expand

Us is visually stylish but extremely pretentious and flat and just boring. It seemed like they imagined a bunch of visually arresting screen grabs and then wrote the script from there trying to create a story of it. It also felt like a hundred other things I'd seen in other movies and shows and never quite its own thing.

This pales in comparison to any movie you could possibly compare it to, from Mandy to Hereditary to any of the great A24 films or any of the classic Kubrick, Polanski or Hitchcock movies it was probably using as inspiration. There is an annoying M Knight Shyamalan-ish twist at the end that kind of invalidates the whole film. The sad thing about this twist was that it felt like a desperate last-minute attempt at achieving impact.

It was strange to watch this movie because it felt like a lot of things were so deliberately set up through REALLY long nearly static shots, and a lot of symbolism only to sort of get brushed off in the end when the "why" is barely explained. A few minutes into watching his movies everybody sitting in your vicinity seems to disappear and all that remains is you and the gripping story unfolding on screen. He achieves this effect by allowing his films to breathe. Sometimes the camera lingers on scenery. Sometimes it lingers on a person. Either way, it demonstrates a patience in filmmaking that is rare for a first or second-time director, meaning that Peele undoubtedly honed this skill throughout the 53-episode run of his comedy show and was able to successfully apply it to horror.

This duality—comedy and horror—is perhaps the most striking (and successful) component of Peele’s new film ‘Us,’ the follow-up to his Oscar winning debut ‘Get Out.’ There are just as many laughs littered throughout the film as there are moments of shock and tension.

Yet there’s a hollowness to ‘Us,’ as though the burdens of being one of the most prolific creators currently working in Hollywood stunted the overall development of the film. Peele likely took years to write ‘Get Out’ and the astounding density of the story shows. Peele had perhaps half as much time to write ‘Us’—while being twice as busy—and the product speaks for itself.

For example, there’s an interesting red-blue dynamic applied to the costume and set design, but its intended meaning doesn’t always feel consistently applied. Furthermore, one of the on-screen deaths is needlessly unrealistic, while a particular shot setup towards the end of the film tries to be artistic but just doesn’t work … at all.

As a result, it begs the question of whether ‘Us’ is disappointing compared to ‘Get Out,’ or if it’s disappointing entirely on its own.

Us has brought back a similar disappointment to the one I had with Get Out. And this is due to the way Jordan Peele is getting praised by the critics when frankly his style as a filmmaker is quite simplistic.

Us is being hailed as an excellent work of horror, some people are even calling it a masterpiece of the genre when basically its whole concept is based on different and ambiguous plot pieces that are put together trying to create a more cohesive story that unfortunately doesn't feel original in any way.
Especially because its plot twist can be intuited from the beginning taking into account what you see in that opening scene and that almost all the stories that involve doppelgängers have the same plot twist.

Definitely the film has some good moments. The introduction of the doppelgängers is really creepy and Red's character is very unsettling. The tone in those moments and the use of the score are outstanding but in general, beyond the messages within the story and all the easter eggs inside of it, the film is hardly supported by its structure and the truth is that the horror felt a bit diluted. Yes, there's a lot of mystery and suspense but the horror wasn't as strong as I hoped for.

Once again there are no surprises behind the veil and it's ironic considering that for the second time in a row with Peele, the critics played against him because they made me wait for something more and judging the film with what he delivered, well... that extra step of quality isn't really there.

There are so many more creative ways he could've answered "why" any of the things in the story were taking place and it seems like he took the least inspired route. It's not a terrible movie, but it really frustrates me when people make this movie out to be an instant classic, because the last one obviously was.

Literally nothing makes sense or pays off in a satisfying way. I love Tim Heidecker, but his presence only adds to the feel that this could've easily been a feature length Tim & Eric's Bedtime Stories, and would've met all expectations.

The story is not compelling, which is what I think most people would've expected most after Get Out, which at no point felt confusing or random. This movie is the exact opposite of that. It never commits to either an ideological or story driven concept except "There are mirror people" and I can't say anything else without spoiling the movies, but the reasons for _why_ there are mirror people never really pays off, though it is explained. It's just not a very satisfying conclusion.

So if the ending is weak, what's left? Not a lot of good laughs. uniquely good scary moments, or even memorable moments. It's not a movie you're going to want to watch twice.

Anyone giving this movie a 10 is pushing an agenda or is working for the guerrilla marketing campaign that badly upsold this movie. Anyone using words like "thought provoking" or "genre defining" or "richly layered, deftly nuanced" are absolutely lying to your face. There is nothing thought provoking about this movie. There is no moral message in this movie.

Lots of laughing by the audience at things that probably weren't meant to be funny.

The performances are good, but the passing didn't work at all and it also has a serious problem of tone, the 1st half is like a slasher film with all the suspense and jump scares, as for the 2nd half the thing is more like a dark comedy and neither is really well done. There are a lot of symbolism and things that will make you have a second thought about the plots and things within this movie but that's it.

I will never recommend it but I also think that maybe this will be the cup of tea of some other.

Stellar acting is hampered by deliberate character ambiguity regarding the motives of the doubles; the movie flip flops between musing over the humanism of these "monsters" and elsewhere reducing them to mindless zombies. Unfortunately, this insistence on both having and eating the cake comes at a cost to the otherwise very compelling metaphor underpinning the film, and turns what should be a jaw-dropping final twist into a brow-furrowing moment of discontent. Peele's social commentary is at times outstanding, and Us also has plenty of truly excellent horror moments, but these two things as a rule never occur in the same scene. Us hits all the bases for modern Western psychological horror (regretfully, even the "enormous unexplained plot holes" base) but the ambition of Peele's concept is held back by his inability to execute it gracefully. The same movie would be much better without amateurish hallmarks like ham-fisted dad jokes, ambiguous sci-fi cop-outs, and immersion-breaking monologues explaining enormous portions of plot. Expand

In the beginning, I thought Peale was doing somethingJust saw US. Liked Get Out better. People who think US is a great horror movie either have never seen The Shining, which makes US look pathetic, or can't get anything more complex than US. In the beginning, I thought Peale was doing something interesting in apparently satirizing the complacency, blandness, and "normality" of contemporary upper-middle-class suburban black professionals, and showing them that they are culpable for doing their best to wear "Howard" sweats as symbols of how they've left their shadow selves in the ghetto behind. But when Peale doubles their white upper-middle-class pals, too, suddenly the movie is incoherent. If Peale's trying to show whites in his audience that they are just as bad for forgetting about their own poor white, low rent "shadow," that be okay. But by showing all the red horror figures of either race as shadows of the American middle-class masses epitomized by the vapid idiocy of "Hands Across America" Peale is shooting fish in a barrel. It's all to easy and simple-minded. Kubrick was a genius. Geniuses produce works of art as complex and mysterious as genius itself. Peale's just a talented journeyman Hollywood director who gets overrated because he's black and black directors are still too rare. US is sort of the horror genre version of the action genre megabit Black Panther. Both films are shallow and ultimately rather empty, but they get lots and lots of extra points for the blackness of the principles involved. This overrating of works by blacks is actually a form of patting them on the head, as if it's "amazing" "they" can do so well, when their "so well" would have gotten a yawn from whites. Moonlight is incomparably the best black film in American history, on every level, and is one of the great American films period. It makes US look like a crude comic book. Black Klansman, not to mention Do the Right Thing, was a much better movie than US. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow, this is something...

First of all credit is there credit is due: the acting and cinematography is fantastic, hands down.
The first half or so of the movie is tense and creepy. It was awesome, as awesome as you could expect.

As for the second half... well, all starts fall apart. To the point where it becomes plain stupid and incoherent when you just think about it just for a bit...

If the ending was left ambiguous and fuzzy - it may be alright, but explanation given us is so, so painfully not thought out:
1) If the main character is actually a "shadow" and don't have a "soul" all this time - why the hell she's actually scared for her kids and husband and behaves like, well, human being? Why the "shadow" who is actually a real human behaves like creepy lunatic?
2) So, someone really build this underground... facilities?.. fill them with "shadows" for some reason and them just left them there with open doors, no guards or security? Even supplied them this jumpsuits uniform and golden scissors? And one day they just kind of walk out and start murdering people?
3) Are this facilities maintained by someone? Are this someone did find strange that suddenly one of "shadows" is chained to the bed and can speak and behave like real human?
3) It's shown that "shadows" eat _only_ raw rabbits for some reason, but rabbits need food and care too. Who the hell supplied with and/or cared for rabbits all this time? Rabbits are not cheapest nor easiest way to get food by far...also living underground without sun on raw-meat diet cannot possibly be healthy, so how "shadows" possible be as healthy and strong as real humans?..
4) It is said and shown that "shadows" mimics their real humans counterparts but only the youngest son shown to have connection with his shadow in this way, all others just went loose...
5) Random attraction on a beach visited by hundreds of people is actually an unsecured entry point to the what should be top level secret government (is it specified it is actually government or just implied? I may have forgot) black-site prison-like operation. Yeah...
6) Aside from main characters none of the real humans shown alive after the events. They are implied by the helicopters though, yet still...

I really, really wanted to like this film, Get Out was superb and trailers was good, but that's just a mess. Where "Get Out" was actually logical and pretty realistic (with acceptable level of suspension of disbelief of course) "Us" is just went full "The Happening" level of WTF.

The movie is a 5/10 at best and I give Get Out a 8/10 easily. Us is just a poor execution of a decent idea. I created an account just to illuminate the blatant discrepancy between reviews. The movie feels rather slow and even cheesy at times, keeping you watching by not answering the lingering questions you may have had from the beginning; only hinting at potential answers during various scenes. However, the film fails to fully commit to any overarching meaning it seems to be reaching for. Instead, the meaning generated by the answers to those lingering questions remains contained within the limited context of the world within the movie; basically insignificant, once the movie ends. Jordan Peele creatively subverts the home-invasion genre in "Us." But Ugh, that ending!

The first half is outstanding. Lupita Nyong'o is excellent as always -- she's a moody complex character which makes complete sense after the "big reveal." Once that "big reveal" happens, suspending disbelief is difficult, even for a horror movie. It is almost as if they came up with the main premise, than spit-balled an explanation. The explanation / back story is so absurd it requires way too much exposition.

Here's hoping Peele gets more grounded in his third act.

Coming off of the well deserved success of "Get Out," Jordan Peele delivered us another potential smash hit with "Us." I really enjoy Peele's work, I like what he's doing with movies and I think "Get Out" really opened a lot of people's eyes with just how good Peele can be. "US" unfortunately represents a bit of a sophomore slump for Peele, which is unfortunate because this cast was fantastic. The film also had a good soundtrack, comedy that hit really well and did provide some intense moments of fear but unfortunately, the plot here is absolutely riddled with holes, especially towards the end that almost completely undoes everything this film does well. You can drive a truck through some of these plot holes, a lot of the things regarding the Tethered people make absolutely no sense and it drags this movie almost to a disappointing halt. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is very bipolar. Performances are solid across the board, the music and direction are all excellent, it's just a shame that the script is sub par. Us is just another example of the decline in Hollywood writing. The movie appears to be trying to make a statement about the socio-political issues first and an enjoyable horror movie as a distant memory.
This is made wholly evident by the scores of the critics vs the audience.

How could anyone, government or otherwise, have the time resources, infrastructure and staff to create all those clones. Why would you create so many if they had no purpose. How do the clones behave when you are driving or flying? Why did Red not mimic Adelaide? why didnt other clones just leave? why didn't Red leave earlier? Why create clones designed to kill their "originals" purely for the reason of the originals not knowing that they exist.

Great Acting, terrible script.

The performances are really memorable and engaging, with Lupita easily being my favorite part of the film. The cinematography was interesting throughout and I loved the film’s theme (Anthem), even though the rest of the soundtrack left a little more to be desired. I just found myself disappointed with the plot and where it goes in the 2nd and 3rd acts. There’s a lot to like about this film but a lot to shake your head at so I know I would have to see it in the theater again to really solidify my opinion.

It becomes a full slasher movie after the first hour, there's no more mystery at all. I was wondering how they're going to go back to horror/mystery after the "enemies" become fully revealed and start parading around on the screen. It becomes silly and boring instead, horrors are best when there's still some mystery around the "enemy". That's why pacing is really important to keep the tension. This movie completely lost that tension after an hour.

The backstory of the "enemies" is short, wish they would explain a bit more about them. The plot twist was kind of expected and it didn't surprise me at all. At that point, the movie was already full slasher and the main character was behaving like a blood craving supervillain. I mean she went out of the car alone into the woods to kill confirm one of the enemies and left her family behind to go all John Rambo for that last boss fight.

If you're looking for a shallow slasher movie, this movie is all for you. If you're looking for an actual horror movie, look elsewhere. Seems like critics always rate "horror" movies highly when they're not scared. This movie is miles behind movies like Insidious/Hereditary/Drag me to hell if you're talking about scariness/tension.

This movie can't get more than a 6 from me and that's me being generous because it's a 5.5 at most. Lesson learned, don't trust critics!

As a side note: It's nice that the cast is mostly black, the movie is kinda enforcing stereotypes that all black people just listen to hip-hop all the time. I'm black myself and listen to all types of music!

Still a social horror and a sort of critique of capitalism which, however, seemed to me to be a "not at his best" Jordan Peele.
