Aaah, the film was OK as the actor were spot on p and were pretty good at acting. Except the whole plot is a little pointless and it just an avereage film.

There is plenty to unpack in 'Us" a scary, tense, hilarious, and terrifically acted slash-thriller that cements Jordan Peele's position as a premier film-maker.

I think there are a lot of scenes, images, and lines that have the potential to become iconic horror fare. The script, while in my own opinion not as robust as the script of Get Out, is layered and sporadically funny. The acting is great, particularly the performance of Lupita Nyong'o. The soundtrack is also phenomenal. There are a few weak storytelling elements and some ideas that aren't fully fleshed out or presented, but nevertheless, this is a great horror movie that I definitely recommend. Expand

"If you wanna get crazy, we can get crazy.."

That moment when you trying to sound tough, but come across as doing a Christopher Walken impression.

Anywhere…

‘US’ is no horror masterpiece, but does not waste an excellent concept in terms of execution and the talent involved. The film creeps into your thoughts long after leaving the cinema and already that’s an achievement. This is Jordan Peele’s second feature movie that takes a horror trope of a family in peril and goes “but what if...”. While the movie dose stick with you long after it’s done, you slowly reflect on things that don’t make sense when given some thought. However, I will take original concepts any day.

Lupita Nyong'o is absolutely terrific as the troubled mother with a mysterious past and the unnerving doppelganger Red. The differences in her performance with facial, vocal, movement and how she carried herself throughout the movie looked effortless. Toni Collette delivered the best performance of last year with ‘Hereditary’, and this year is Lupita. I also make this comparison as the sad reality that Lupita will likely be overlooked by the Academy Awards the same as the Collette, because the labeled genre horror - damn shame.

The child actors (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex) were both pretty good, especially during the scenes when they looked terrified and how they both played the doppelgangers. I find it amusing to see Winston Duke playing the comedic relief compared to his past roles so far, which I got most of the chuckles from.

The score was very unique to say the least. The mixture on modern, classics and original compose music resulted in a fascinating approach that manage to elevate the intensity even more. The cinematography is visually striking with the use of shadows and colors that models the film’s presence.

Jordan Peele manages to juggle so many ideas with social commentary, themes, horror, trauma, America, ect. I can’t progress how peculiar Peele’s career has shifted and suddenly becoming the most promising voice in horror, if he chooses to continue with this genre or explore different things. I just hope we don’t have another M. Night Shyamalan situation where frame goes to one’s head.

For issues: I wish the film was more ambiguous and didn’t explain itself towards the end, especially the last shot. Some of the humor deflates the tension in inappropriate segments that stopped me from scared. As I said before, the film juggles so many ideas, although at times feels like it’s saying too little.

Other than that, I still think this is a strong follow up to ‘Get Out’ and I’ll see Peele’s next movie no matter what.

Overall rating: Watch yourself.

Peele preserves the magic that show in prima opus Get out. The idea of a evil twin that came from nowhere produce enough shivers until the last minute. A plot inspired on Twilight Zone with an epilogue that tributes the Twilight Zone.

It's almost impossible not to compare with Get Out. It's almost as good as Get Out, but it felt more shallow. The amazing analogies and double meaning actions couldn't hold the hype. Also, amazing soundtrack.

The plot twist was greatly played out, however made some earlier scenes confusing and incorrect (although it may align in a second watch through) other than that the movie was generally good from the eerie music and well thought out camera angles (for most of the film) the movie although not scary brought tension and a sense of curiosity to the watcher. Overall if you are looking for a scary and adrenaline rush film this definitely isn't for you, but if you are looking for an intriguing and tension filled film requiring you to think and figure out what is going on, I definitely recommend you give this one a try. We are still recovering from when the World Trade Center was attacked. We are also still recovering from “Hands Across America.” Yeah, that “happy, lively” event advertised through cheesy commercials in truth left a nasty effect on Us. Don’t believe that accusation? Jordan Peele proves so with his newest instant-classic.

Before analyzing its brilliance, here comes a little “tough love” on the film’s poor screenplay, which is packed with coincidences. Several laughs come from the father in a Marvel fashion—that being, inappropriate comic relief thrown into serious moments. There are a couple other slightly offensive jokes that a few audience members could deem pretty dumb. It’s not just the inconsistent humor though that hinders the script’s addressed questions to our existential crisis, but too many crucial details don’t go into enough depth to make sense out of the situations; that particularly goes to the antagonists: doppelgangers of people named “shadows” who call themselves “Americans.” Where did they originally come from? It doesn’t quite explain.

In the world of regular people, little modes of affect upon the mother’s terror don’t reach their intended impact, mostly the frequent use of a man brandishing Jeremiah 11:11 on a handheld sign. It’s not clear how someone trying to play the role of a prophet isn’t warning of an upcoming tragedy that will tear the nation further apart against itself. The role of the media could particularly have been used from that free motif’s advantage to do something besides oppress our progression, but the media instead creates a poor picture of itself to raise our self-esteem, as if it’s reflecting back on those Watergate days of corrupt news outlets.

Okay, enough negativity, everything else about Jordan Peele’s new work of art projects the same disruptive power of Heaven’s Gate. The opening text informs of how North America sits above derelict underground tunnels, some without any known use, leading into a very slow dolly in at a cheerful “Hands Across America” ad on an old TV. Then comes a fearful flashback to justify the mom/protagonist’s trauma, who wanders onto the lightning-lit beach, until stuck in a maze of mirrors after the exit sign. Now, she fears Santa Cruz as her memory is overlapped by buzzing carnival music. Then the opening credits dolly out of a red, furry eye to reveal rabbits caged up to an ominous children’s choir. With the haunting intro to a true experience done with, it sparks back your permanent effects from the nation’s roller coaster history, as if any optimism the 1980s gave to counteract the 1950s-1970s has now dissipated.

The new millennium has already been no stranger to calamity, hence why we must ask ourselves, “What do we have to anticipate in the 2020’s?” Easy: A new decade, a new culture, a whole new set of expectations based on the failures of the 2010’s. The kids in this feature portray that answer, as the son, Jason, mask and magic trick in hand, finds trouble concentrating, but not as much as his sister, Zora, who stays on her phone at all times. This look of submission that the Gen Alpha characters fall victim to turns them susceptible to danger.

The mystery remains subtle enough to make Martin Scorsese proud. At first, a traumatized little girl lines up sandbox toys, then once inside a long, bleak square hallway, why she lines those toys up makes perfect sense.

It displays the media spelling out our doom based on the sound mixers’ perfect song usage. It takes little cheap trends, particularly one stick figure family focused on before the real family, to impress upon our flatness. Frustration through Dad’s humor represents humanity’s whole insecurity comparable to whenever religious groups call hurricane tragedies, “God’s wrath.” Using creepy daylight imagery of a large-scale cult, a wonderful thing turns into something scary, much like how a hurricane turns a bright, tropical vacation into death flooding around at every block.

Yet that metaphorical hurricane was actually a record-breaking fundraiser originally intended to raise up to 100 million for poverty in Africa, but only made 15 million in bank. That’s why it’s high-time Jordan Peele tells the hard truth: despite Hands Across America, “Nobody cares about the end of the world.” That’s why we need to remember that the people’s mindset tops priority over money raised; together, palm in palm, observing our commonalities, so not to relive our shortcomings. It’s incredible how Peele’s hot streak thus far can be either simply enjoyed by the typical moviegoer or thoroughly analyzed by the cinema artists, carrying a deceptive amount of heart in the process of the hilarity and screams. Give this horror film a chance, then you for certain will want to do your part in removing the traps that separate us.

I liked the perspective of inequality taken from the film, specifically economic and social class inequality, and some truly thrilling moments. However, the film's third act seems to detour leaving a lot more questions than answers with a lot of unset circumstances that could have been done more eloquently. In addition, the twist was relatively predictable based on the first act setup. Overall, this is a fine sophomore effort from Peele, but doesn't capture the success he found in Get Out. I'm fascinated to see if Peele will break into new genres in the future or end up being typecast as this social horror director. Expand

But unlike many movies from that era, the conclusion isn't wrapped up nicely for the audience. Instead it leaves the audience hanging with some questions. And I think this will prove divisive. Personally I found it more haunting than if everything had been explained. But likely some people will not enjoy this and feel like they were teased all along. It really is a story that's begging the viewer to interpret it.

I highly recommend you take a chance on this film. Jordan Peele has really surprised me as a director of horror, but as a fan of the genre I couldn't be happier with his work.

The direction, most of the edit work,I really wanted to like this. I really, really did. I was super excited for it after the trailer release, but it ended up being something completely and utterly different from what I was expecting. The direction, most of the edit work, cinematography, acting, all great. Unfortunately, a great movie also needs a great story, and this is where “Us” falls flat. It looks like Peele just wanted to do too much at once and as a result we are left with a patchwork quilt of a film that isn’t truly horror or thriller or comedy. I don’t want to go into details that would spoil anything, but the plot has massive, stadium-sized holes in it and that’s for the bits the movie actually decides to explain. As for the rest? Well let’s just say that vague, openendedness doesn’t work when there wasn’t even enough to encourage imagination or thought out of the audience. Also, the ending could be seen more than a mile away; there are a couple lines spoken by characters (one in the first 10 or so minutes) that straight up spoonfeed you the final twist. Not great.

Let me preface this other part by getting this out there, as I’m sure many are wondering - No, there really is nothing racial about this film, unless you think having most (not all) major characters played by black people constitutes “racial stuff”, in which case you have other troubling issues that require attention. There aren’t really even any “good” or “bad” people; it’s all relative/subjective based on the situation, which is one of the points of the movie that actually holds up well. Anyway, coming to a related topic, yes, we are now in an era of overcompensation for the historically unjust mistreatment of others, which can lead to certain movies ending up with inflated scores...However, I for one would much rather see this than go back to how it used to be, and seeing the made up nonsense in some of these user reviews, it seems that the people who are upset are exactly the ones you’d think.

So, where does all that leave us? “Us” is worth seeing for its atmosphere and many other positives related to its technical construction, including the actors’ performances. However, don’t go in expecting some intense horror film NOR some super politically charged anti-establishment and/or race relations piece. Jordan Peele will one day probably be one of our greatest directorial voices, he’s just not quite there yet.

The box office smash Us is proves that great movies don’t come easy, but there is a lot of talent and passion that makes a film like this work. Warning there will be some spoilers in this synopsis, but the ending will not be revealed for those who do want to read it. So, dear reader, read at your own risk.

The film opens with text about how several tunnels running underground in America. Afterwords, an ad on an old television comes on for a Hands Across America and how we can be tethered together, more on that later, to stop poverty. We are then showed our lead at Santa Cruz as a young girl Adelaide, performed by Madison Curry, walking away from her parents and into a house of mirrors labeled Vision Quest. She sees a version of herself that is real but it’s not quite her. She runs away and is in shock of what happened. Cut to present day and Adelaide all grown up, played by Lupita Nyong’o, is going on a vacation with her family to relax. But when her husband wants to go to the boardwalk, but she declines at first. But after much convincing she goes back. From there things are not as they seem.

Get Out, his previous film, was a film that no one saw coming. It won an Academy Award for best original screenplay. It has gained massive accolades and is considered one of the best horror films ever made. After I saw the film personally, I wanted to know what his next project was. Cut to December 25, 2018, when the trailer was released for Us. I was ecstatic to when the film was coming out and I went and saw it in the theatre.

Jordan Peele's second film is a triumph in cinematic horror. I feel I am not being hyperbolic when I say this, but he not only made a great movie but he cultivated an experience that can't be replicated. Jordan Peele is the modern auteur. He is in full control of these projects and as a unique vision that isn't shown in mainstream storytelling. When you see Us, you know that there is passion in what he makes even if the symbolism is not very clear. For me, I would like to see movies in where everyone is giving it their all which makes an entertaining movie.

The film should be studied for its structure and symbolic nature. It not only will give people conversations for a long time but will entertain everyone for years to come. Us, to quote another iconic auteur, may be his masterpiece.

“US” against us

“Us” by Jordan Peele, the once comedian and actor transitioned to innovative/revolutionary horror/suspense movie creator. Much acclaim could be given to this movie but I expect some will be taken away from the brilliance of this film purely based on comparison to his first film “Get Out”.

Nevertheless, this film gives you exactly what you want in a horror film. It has you watching behind your back, looking around the corner, and looking in the mirror differently. On a completely different spectrum, this film is capable of inspiring dialogue and discussion among friends, family, co-workers and allows you to share some laughs. Peele has struck gold again with this film in the way he’s played into people’s conscious and subconscious fears and the actual reality we live. Peele also found a way to tie biblical context to current reality seamlessly, further adding to the quality of this film. All of the above makes this a well-rounded film.

Now this film isn’t perfect by any stretch. If I have to nitpick, there is some predictability. Also the explanation in the ending, even for a fantasy movie, is unrealistic. It leaves you saying, “huh?” and “how’d they do that again?”. But all in all, that doesn’t make me tell a person to not see this movie in the theater. I wouldn’t be surprised if this movie gets some Oscar chatter, especially if it can gain a following similar to “Get Out”.

Either way, go see this in the theater and I’d even say get yourself some popcorn to smack on to ease the suspense he leaves you in.

In my opinion Jordan Peele is very good at provoking your mind and making you think, so to the casual viewer "Us"(2019) will definitley get your mind going but to me I saw a lot of elements from things i've already seen. In Summary this is gonna be a lot for most people but to me it was A horror twis on a National Lampoon's Vacation series family dynamic with Black Swan(2010) and Invasion of the body snatchers(1978) as fundamentals and a nice Monster(1994) twist in there, thats how I percieved this movie at least in a raw point of view of it without looking at it from those perspectives "Us" was enjoyable because I could see how the director was leading the viewer throughout the movie with his style of filmmaking this movie will make you ask and it shows you things in detail like hiding the answers in plain sight but without giving you the whole thing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite some troublesome plot holes, this was a pretty solid movie. I do agree that it suffers a little because it's choosing to make a political statement. A slightly different choice around the origins of the movie main villains would be all that I needed. However, my origin story would undercut the moral of this tale.

This is a thinking person's horror movie on par with the extremely underrated but still haunting "Event Horizon."

We are introduced to the Wilsons, led by jovial patriarch Gabe (Winston Duke) and his reserved wife Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o), on a vacation to the beaches of Santa Cruz with their two kids (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex). Gabe’s enthusiasm for holiday hobbies is unshared by Adelaide, a victim of childhood trauma who begins to feel uneasy after a series of unnerving coincidences start to plague their idyllic trip. Her fears are not unfounded, as the family are soon terrorised by doppelgangers in what proves to be a horror thrill-ride, thoughtfully executed by Jordan Peele.
Peele is a maestro of the genre; he has an uncanny way of knowing both when to play into horror tropes and when to subvert them completely, resulting in a film that grips the audience in its unpredictability. So many elements are combined in Us; there’s old-fashioned slasher horror and classic home invasion, accompanied by the suspense and sharp comedy of Get Out. Even more satisfying, however, is Peele’s inclusion of underlying social commentary, a subtle satire perhaps echoed in the film’s title (are we talking about the pronoun or looking at a critique of U.S society?). Us may lack the deft narrative control of Get Out, but in some ways it’s an even more impressive feat of filmmaking, equally thought-provoking and thematically complex, yet more ambitious and inventive. The entire movie is shrouded in a layer of ambiguity; Peele is giving us the freedom to interpret it in whatever way we wish. Some will see Us as more of a metaphor, others as a social statement… many will also see it as simply a gorily entertaining crowd-pleaser and the film functions gloriously even as just that. It’s not without the occasional plot-hole, but if these inspire Peele to return to the ‘Us-verse’ for another film to clear up the gaps, they will all have been worth it. Us is elevated by a selection of fantastic performances, notable by the fact that every actor plays two roles, that of their character and their throat-slitting counterpart. Lupita Nyong’o is a force of silent determination as Adelaide and oozes steely creepiness as the leader of the subterranean “Tethered”, Red. Winston Duke’s Gabe is the soft-hearted master of the dad joke, yet his twin is wonderfully menacing. The two kids are fantastic and Elisabeth Moss is brilliant as always. In the third act, the film becomes slightly more unfocused, but the cast keep it buoyant with spirited performances.
Visually, the film is absolutely gorgeous, Mike Gioulakis’ cinematography making expert use of reflections as a terrifying motif to keep us on the edge of our seats. Homage is paid to other horror classics; an overhead car shot reminds one of the Torrances arriving at the Overlook in ‘The Shining’ and haunting dance interludes echo of Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Black Swan’. Even with this, Us feels like an original product, unapologetically strange and stylish. Michael Abels’ score is also a gem, an amalgamation of itchy strings, taiko drums and Satanic choirs. Jukebox choices in certain scenes are also well-judged (let’s just say, Luniz’s I Got 5 On It will have a whole new meaning).
With Us, Jordan Peele seems to have broken the sophomore curse, cementing his status as one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. It’s the kind of film where, with every return viewing, you will notice more and more clever touches that lie hidden in its rich textures. Horrifying, trenchant and unique, Us is another success from Jordan Peele.

The short review: A good, not great, horror/thriller that did not fully succeed due to the lack of plausibility (for me). Related media: There's no related media to this film (but I have seen the excellent Get Out).

What's it like?: The film asks what would happen if there is doppelganger out there for each of us that wants to kill us to take over our lives.

Positives:

1) As with Get Out, this film is an edge-fo-the-seat horror/thriller that has an interesting plot. 2)The twist at the end is good stuff.

Negatives: 1) However, the twist at the end does not match up with how Lupita's character had been behaving for some parts of the story. A main question is, why did she have a holiday home, or allow her husband to buy a holiday home in Santa Cruz, considering what she knows, and I am referring to the twist?

2) Several questions on the creation of the clones, such as who, why and how, need to be explained to make the plot plausible.

3) More questions on why the clones are so murderous, how did they know where to find their doppelgangers (the 'real' people), as well as what they are doing at the end of the film needs answering.

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: (Not rated for kids)

Teens: Excellent

Young adults: Excellent Medium age adults: Good

Old adults: Good Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). It is worth it to watch it in the cinema.

This is the second film directed by Jordan Peele after his hit directorial debut, Get Out. I think that film was stronger overall, but Us was very entertaining! It is a horror-comedy about a family that is being attacked by...themselves. This movie had me on the edge of my seat and laughing at the same time! Some might think the movie is tonally inconsistent, but I think the mix of horror and comedy worked very well. I thought it was genuinely really funny and scary. The soundtrack was pretty cool, the performances were excellent, it looked great, and there are many surprises and twists! This movie has received kind of a mixed reaction, but I think people’s expectations are too high. Get Out was so good, it’s gonna be hard to top it. Just take this movie for what it is, a smart, scary, fun and funny horror movie! Check it out, you’ll have fun! Expand

I really liked Get Out & was hoping this would be as good, but it was one of the worst moviesI've never written a review, but this movie was so awful and the critics so wrong, I felt morally obligated to save people from wasting their money. I really liked Get Out & was hoping this would be as good, but it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. There were so many fundamental plot holes I couldn't stop thinking of them for hours. Spoilers ahead, so don't read this if you want to see this movie, but I suggest you do not. Who created all the duplicates and where did they go? How, exactly are the duplicates controlling the actions and thoughts of people. If the duplicates can control every movement of humans than why did they need to go up to the surface and kill them? They could make them commit suicide or murder each other. They could make humans torture themselves from a comfortable distance. What was the purpose of controlling human's every tiny action and thought? They didn't seem to be doing anything particularly meaningful with this power. How would the millions of them shown holding hands across America fit in the basement of that building? Why were they standing holding hands anyway? Is that as far as their master plan takes them? I'm trying to imagine Nyong'o's character talking the duplicates into doing this--"Hey, lets get revenge on the people we are controlling by murdering them with scissors and then stand holding hands across America" (What?!) Why did they suddenly stop killing people? There were clearly more humans to kill (somebody was flying those helicopters at the end). Had American law enforcement and military capabilities deteriorated to the point they couldn't kill duplicates with scissors? Had all the guns in the U.S. disappeared? Where did they get all those scissors and those silly red jump suits anyway? There was nothing to eat but rabbits for the duplicates in the basement...but who was feeding the rabbits and where did they get the food for them? Why were the rabbits there in the first place? Where is all the rabbit poop? Why would the Nyong'o struggle to get a fireplace poker to break the coffee table she was handcuffed to? It's a coffee table-it's not bolted to the floor-just slide it over. The "surprise ending" occurred to me at the beginning of the movie. Speaking of the surprise ending, how are we supposed to believe the duplicate Nyong'o would have repressed her memory of being a duplicate? Repressed memories and PTSD occur after traumatic circumstances. Her switching places to enter a much better world would be something to celebrate--there's no reason for amnesia. To be fair, there were moments when the cinematography was very good (ie. the shot of the shadows walking on the beach--yes, I got the symbolism). The beginning was suspenseful, I couldn't be surprised or afraid after about 20-30 minutes, though, because the ridiculous plot quickly became so distracting. I can't figure out why anyone could rate this movie highly. Expand

It was suspenseful, especially the middle act. The big twist ending is easily predicted within the first 30 minutes. It’s a shame that Peele went for the suspense/twist ending again in his second run. It doesn’t work here.

Would have been a better and more suspenseful story if they just revealed the truth near the beginning of the movie instead of thinking no one will guess it right. I suppose there are countless areas of symbolism in the film, but the backstory of the antagonists is handled very ham-fistedly and leaves you shaking your head. I’ve seen worse explanations in other films, but this is pretty vague and requires major suspension of disbelief buy in. I think the movie would have been better served with a supernatural explanation vs what they actually went for.

I hope Peele doesn’t go the way of Shamaylan, continually trying to capture that same shocking twist ending in all of his movies. Just make a good suspenseful thriller, but perhaps let the audience in on the secret early in the film but hide it from the actors. Take a different angle.

I’m sure Peele will go a different direction in his next film. I suspect this movie will do well opening weekend but drop off in ticket sales second week.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I found this movie to be quite a letdown. Upon seeing the trailer, I was hyped, considering it's one of my favorite trailers in recent memory and Get Out was quite fantastic. This movie did lot live up to expectations, though.

It started off with quite a drag. A lot of shots and scenes were a lot longer than they should have been. It takes about 30 minutes to even get going.

I was intrigued to get to know what the killers were because the trailer was so vague, but upon learning what they were, I couldn't help but feel a major letdown.

The other doppelgängers seemed to kill off their victims really quick and easily (seemed like in seconds), yet this is the only family who is fighting back? Didn't seem to make much sense. Several plot holes here and there. The ending felt very rushed and I was not satisfied with the conclusion. It was very long, actually too long. My friend and I were close to falling asleep.

It's very pretty and well-acted, but that doesn't make it good in any sense of the word. I wanted to love this. And I couldn't wait to see it. But after seeing it, I didn't like it. At all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I felt it fitting that my first ever review of a movie be this one. I simply could not let it lie the disappointment I felt once the credits began to roll. Although the relief was equally welcomed. What makes it worse is the disparity in review scores between your average movie goer and the "professional" critics. There seems to be a clear delusion that I can only assume is influenced by other external factors as opposed to sheer honesty and merit. This film holds its own, briefly, at the beginning. A small prologue of events paves the way for several minutes of mystery and curiosity of what is to come. This very quickly leads forward to the scene, everyone has seen in the trailers, where there "is a family on the driveway". From then onwards it spirals into a tornado of flawed plot holes and complete identity crisis. I sincerely felt as if the film had a complete meltdown and had no idea what it wanted to give to me. The characters fall short of providing any form of adrenaline inducing horror and, on more than several occasions, become laughable. Caveman noises, and screeching like dinosaurs, is about as odd as it gets. If I had shut my eyes, I would have been convinced I had gone back to 1993 to watch Jurassic Park for the first time. I specifically remember the part where Winston Dukes character has a tumble with his shadowy counterpart, pulls himself out of the lake onto his boat, and stops with just one foot dangling into the murky abyss thus allowing his attacker to leap from the water and carry on his assault (Surprise!) .... The comedic gasp from the movie screen echoed as if to say, "Are you kidding me with this cliché rubbish that has been done to absolute death". From that point I felt the audience, in unison, switched off. I certainly did.

The stronger performances were overshadowed by the flat storyline which struggles to gain any traction for the best part of 80% of the movie. This ultimately leads onto the most glaringly obvious “twist” I have ever witnessed. You wouldn’t need Holmes along for the ride to figure this one out. A lot was left unexplained and not in a good way, in the way where you think “what was the point”. Plenty could have been sacrificed to offer a more reinforced backstory and offer the depth this tale so desperately needed. I genuinely had high hopes for this movie. I really wanted to like it and love it. And I persevered throughout but the inevitable white flag moment came and, once the movie ended, I was happy to surrender back to reality, somewhat deflated at the missed opportunity.
The cast deserved much more from the narrative, and direction, to support and showcase their skills but unfortunately it was not meant to be. I seriously doubt I would watch this a second time as I feel there is nothing more that can be offered. If you are on your way to watch this then I recommend you lower your expectations to allow for a modicum of enjoyment, otherwise choose something else.

I appreciated some of the clever ideas and writing that was in it, but ultimately found that it didn't live up to the hype too much for me. This was also kinda the case for me with this film as well. It follows a family in their summer vacation home who find themselves being terrorized by doppelgangers of themselves. Interesting concept, wasted potential. It explored these ideas more so rather than fully invested in them, which disappointed me. The character's choices and decisions were also questionable and ridiculous at times, and the ending, while clever, wasn't really much of a payoff and I felt more confused and underwhelmed by it than anything else. Overall, like I said, interesting ideas, but they didn't come together or work as well as I had hoped. Expand

In my city, in one theater it's hogging up seven screens including the IMAX, and that is overdoing it at the expense of other films out that I'm doubtful will ever be shown locally. Having seen "Get Out", a really twisted horror tale mixed with racial commentary, I had high hopes for "Us". But I can only muster up six points because despite the great acting, requiring all the principle characters to take on double roles, and really showcasing their obvious talents, as the film progresses messily toward the final act of what is supposed to reveal the secrets behind the scenario of body doubles killing their "normal" originals, it is left up to much assumption. Yes, there are some twists here. No decent horror movie should be without them. But Peele deliberately has left far too much detail hanging - such as, who created these doubles in the first place and why? And, if, as the film suggests, they are nationwide, where the hell is law enforcement, the Army, etc.? Socially it's an odd duck. I do not know exactly what Peele is trying to imply here, unless it's facing the worst fears of anybody - ourselves. I have my faults, but I'm not afraid of myself. But if you don't sweat some obvious lacks in details and don't mind the lack of a true resolution and climax, "Us" is okay. However, another film out, "Captive State" has been criticized for not closing the plot holes, whereas I thought it did so in fine style, keeping you pinned to the seat until the very end of the film. So, if you want a thriller type movie that actually has an ending, you may want to think twice about "Us." Expand

A movie with metaphoric hints at the state of racial tension in America. In the same vein as M Night Shyamalan Jordan Peele is building a name for himself with metaphoric meaning and political messages being dropped all over his movies even in the face of hurting the plot and coherency. There are numerous and many unmistakable follies left in the film holes a mile long. It's a mash up of various skits that don't make sense but in this case, the skits are replaced with symbolism that inherently have more meaning to the director than anyone else. Most if not nearly everyone will leave the theater scratching their head wondering why there were so many artist renditions of metaphoric messages.

Jordan Peele is the equivalent of May Ling Lu or Chris Ofili selling **** to idiots, and they're paying millions.

It's absurd, pretentious, and lacks any real creativity. Idiots are eating that **** sandwich however and paying hundred bucks just to taste it.

Keeping it simple, its a good horror/thriller but its another average movie in the genre. Personal taste and what freaks you out really makes a difference. I didnt find it any better than say, Conjuring, Witch, or It follows.

You thought one way, the movie went another way revealed the trick of where you assumed wrong like a magician. The low budget didn't spoil its cleverness and fun. In comes "Us" with an even creepier atmosphere but also features stronger political imagery. Sadly, while there are big points for a creepy style, visuals and a terrific performance by Lyong'o, the story is too clever for itself. It leads you into misdirection from the beginning and completely forgetting that it's supposed to resolve why you thought right and the film swung left. The big reveal does not resolve at all. It laughs in the face of the viewer trying to make sense of why anyone would act the way they would if you knew from the movie's outset. The answer is that the actions of the characters are based upon false assumptions. And this is why you'll see so many dislike and are frustrated by this movie.

Case in point without spoilers. Why would a family stand still, without movement, for a long time in the driveway of a family's home? A: Because that's what all low budget creepy crappy slasher films do in order to create "an atmosphere" of terror. And the film's reveal about who the victims are in this film are just as wooden, hollow and phony. Had this film been less a vehicle of praise by liberal reviewers (who are clearly terrified to say anything critical about a certain niche of directors and actors), this film would have received a 5 at best for a great atmosphere, great Lyong'o, and a lousy, illogical, sloppy, lazy script by a director who had a certain class of people and nationalities to blame and let social media loose with its insipid insinuations. The number of plot holes and illogic is literally in the dozens and it's very disappointing that it's all style with no substance or consistency. My review - fun to watch the first 2/3, a frustrating reveal and not a movie you'll watch again.

While the film was obviously trying to keep its audience mind blown with the plot and twists i was too busy being mind blown how this movie kept taking itself to new levels of **** the more i watched it. The film started out promising but takes a turn for the worst. Did Jordan Peele even watch his own film? I wish i could get my god damn money back, i nearly walked out but stayed hoping for an ending that might justify buying the ticket only to be disappointed by the predictable twist that a **** film like this would take. Every minute i was baffled by the direction of the film, just saying why the hell...? I liked the characters but that was about it. Other than that it was a poorly constructed film. Unfortunately, this movie didn't live up to my expectations after "Get Out". It had an interesting beginning but it sort of gave away its plot and if you slightly pay attention you can pretty much figure it out long before the ending.
The acting is pretty neat and the way it's filmed sort of holds it up quite well.
I was surprised by the soundtrack, which was quite good, fun. It definitely felt like an interesting take on the horror genre but sadly it falls short.
The whole plot was just sort of...boring.
Still worth a watch but there are better choices out there.
I'm sure Jordan Peele can do much better than this.

+ Good acting
+ A well-shot film
+ Not bad soundtrack
+ Good movie elements

- Not much of a horror
- Predictable
- The plot was weak
- Doesn't really go anywhere

Overall it's slightly below average.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't waste your time watching this film, totally shallow, meaningless, too weak. It only got good grades in the "specialized" critics because the cast is mostly black including the director himself, so afraid of the social justice and the politically correct, they gave good score for the film but if you are going to see the users' grade is low. I just don't give a score 0 because the performance of Lupita and Shahadi are very expressive and well done, because all other characters are generic and without expression (it is worth mentioning the character made by Winston Duke, totally pathetic and despicable, How could a man of that size, with that height and weight can not kill a simple child or tries to kill an adult with a **** FLARE GUN????), this is an offense to the good movies of terror and suspense already made!!! "US" & "THEM"
Hailing from MADtv and veering off into the critically acclaimed series, Key&Peele, Jordan Peele loves a good story. More than that, he loves getting his hands dirty writing a good thriller. Unfortunately, to his quiet desperation all grapes of concept have been stomped and pressed in ways that only with ‘sleight of pen-in-hand’ will another writer be able to work around a plagiaristic endeavor … kind of, unnoticed. Then again, not quite, for plagiarism of concept for just about everything is inevitable resulting in triggering our recall compatibility and overwhelming déjà vu sense of familiarity. “Haven’t we all been in here before?”

Needless to say, it has hardly ever stopped the long arm of the shoplifter which extends beyond that of the law. And it did not stop Peele from lifting off the concept of “THE INVITATION” two years prior to his 2017 release ; WHITE boyfriend with BLACK girlfriend driving along to an invitation that turns out to be a cult gathering. On the way they crash into a deer (jump scare thrown in for good measure) and kill it.

However, in Peele’s “GET OUT” the genders are reversed ; BLACK boyfriend with WHITE girlfriend driving along to an invitation that turns out to be a cult gathering. On the way they crash into a deer (jump scare thrown in for good measure) and kill it.

By the way, did I mention this is a rip-off?

Yet with all that glaring similarity in plain sight little did we stop to sense the blast wave of déjà vu but proceeded to carry the director on our shoulders with the victory chant of originality. That said, Peele’s gone and done it again with his 2019 release, “Us”. He had subtly-blatantly plagiarized the concept of “THE OTHERS” (Nicole Kidman, 2001) with more emphasis on jump scares to make up for the lack of intellectual content, complete with a supposed, but highly implausible twist at the end.

His title, “Us” being a derivation of the ‘Us and Them’ phrase is a dead giveaway in the parallel storyline of “THE OTHERS”. Case in point of ‘sleight of hand’ writing is having substituted the title, “THE OTHERS” … with “Us”. The result is a hybrid of New York arty-farty, pretentious avant-garde and “WALKING DEAD” theatrics glazed over with the idiotrics of Shyamalan’s epic foiled “THE HAPPENING”.

This is nothing but a been-there-done-that flick which is survived solely by Michael Abels’ thunderous soundtrack. Jordan’s gargantuan persona shaped and gained by the mastery of shocking socio-racial content in “GET OUT” has reduced and relegated him back to the quirky comedian [horror-director-wannabe] which is Key&Peele.

Good acting? Lupita Nyongo (though some of her parts under Jordan Peele’s over-the-top direction may have made her look stupid)

Bad acting? Get that father and son, Winston Duke & Evan Alex off the set!

Highlights of movie: Every single time Michael Abels score comes on. And, oh yes … the clear high voice of Brian Wilson accompanied by the iconic Hammond organ when “Good Vibration” is played.

Enjoyable part of movie experience: Trailer of "PET SEMATARY" before the movie started.

The doppelgangers were laughable and not scary at all. There was no depth to any of the characters and they made jokes at the weirdest times. I looks like the author start writing horror script but in the middle of doing it changed his mind and continued writing trash comedy. Hotestly, in the beginning it was horror but afterwards you cannot scare a 5 year old child with this! The script is flat and full of holes, but it is unrealistic even for a low budget horror (which is not, by the way). Again - you cannot compassionate with characters at all because everything happening around them is so stupid that it becomes fun, and after some time you get bored. But, hold on - in the end you get such a terrible twist in the tale that you will not believe your eyes. Somebody here wrote it was obvious. No. I also thought while watching this, that it may end up like this, but was sure it is too much even for this movie. No, it was not. The director really did it. You get the most stupid conclusion and kind of open ending. I simply do not understand high critics score. These high-browed educated intellectuals cumulitavely gave 42 to Glass movie and 81 to Us. Peele has once again forced a certain propoganda in his new mess, and the PC critics jumped on the HYPETRAIN to blow this up just like get out, which was also ridiculous and even racist towards white people. The man is also unoriginal and rips off other films of the past that the youth of today is too naiev to realize. Get Out ripped off Stepford wives and skeleton key. Us ripped off invasion if the body snatchers and the srangers. Combine that unoriginality with his awful filmmaking style and undertones and you have the most overrated director around today mostly due to brainless leftist crtics that biasedly hype up anything thats PC. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: Cinematography, acting, set design, lighting, and the soundtrack. Cons: The story doesn't feel fully flushed-out, doesn't really make a lot of sense, and sets up so many things that have no pay off. For a film advertised to be a horror film, all of the tension in the film is lost as soon as the doppleganger family gets in the house. From there, we go on this unexpected journey that only kind of makes sense, but is ultimately unsatisfying. I think this film is worth watching, but I don't think Jordan Peele and his team was given enough time to really create a masterpiece, and instead made a very sophisticated but ultimately rushed film. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While Jordan Peele is talented, and Lupita Nyong'o's performance is exquisite, this movie is way overhyped. The children are never in peril (only white teenagers seem to be expendable in this movie) and it's one of those setups where the killer has several chances to kill the protagonists, but just toy with them long enough for them to escape with torn clothes. I was waiting for this film to be scary, but even though some parts of the story are intriguing, when you find out the reveal of what's going on, it becomes stupid and implausible. Get Out worked because the story was simple, but well executed, as all good horror movies should be. This is an example of Peele making up some "cool ideas" that go nowhere in the end. I hope his next movie is worth the overpriced ticket because this one definitely was not. Expand

I was a huge fan of Get Out, so I had to go see this, naturally, assuming it would be just as good as its predecessor. I was unfortunately hit with a movie that garnered more laughs from the audience than scares. The plot was more of a mockery, like Scream or Scary Movie and that's not at all what Peele intended it to be. The performances were good (Particularly from Nyong'o) and the soundtrack was stellar, just like Get Out. Sadly, this can't make up for a boring, unoriginal plot. The movie was not very engaging, but it had its memorable moments and it wasn't absolutely awful. Honestly, Annihilation is a similar but much better movie than this, so I recommend watching that instead. Expand

Us is visually stylish but extremely pretentious and flat and just boring. It seemed like they imagined a bunch of visually arresting screen grabs and then wrote the script from there trying to create a story of it. It also felt like a hundred other things I'd seen in other movies and shows and never quite its own thing.

This pales in comparison to any movie you could possibly compare it to, from Mandy to Hereditary to any of the great A24 films or any of the classic Kubrick, Polanski or Hitchcock movies it was probably using as inspiration. There is an annoying M Knight Shyamalan-ish twist at the end that kind of invalidates the whole film. The sad thing about this twist was that it felt like a desperate last-minute attempt at achieving impact.

I rarely am an opening weekend moviegoer but I felt I must go see 'Us'. My suggestion: wait until your next long distance flight.

Very high production value, but as you zoom out from the story you find yourself saying, "wait, what? thats ridiculous" for so many spots in the movie. The overall plot just doesn't really land and I'd call this one a dud.

It didn't help that there were several moments that were definitely supposed to be tense that the direction and acting make me have to hold in my desire to laugh. Unless I'm in the dark here and this was intended to be more 'spoof' leaning I would say that Jordan Peele missed the mark on many moments in this film and as the scope of the story widens it really loses itself. Too ambitious for sure.

I'm sorry but its tough to have any faith in critics that would give this movie a rating anywhere above a 60
