Mario is arguably one of the best video games franchises ever as its formulas just work well, however it has a big flaw: not being able to flesh out things surrounding the narrative such as plot and characters. Will the movie be able to change that since these are crucial aspects for a movie?

The answer is no, as 'The Super Mario Bros Movie' is completely afraid to take any risk. The plot is as predictable and basic as it can get with many sub-plots that either get pushed aside or are straight-up ignored. The ridiculously fast pacing also doesn't allow you to enjoy each scene to the fullest and makes the plot even more messy than it already is.

The voice acting went full mainstream (and with mainstream I mean boring). The iconic Charles Martinet, despite being available, does not reprise his role as Mario and Luigi but is voicing a side character instead. Chris Pratt as Mario sounds as grating as you'd expect and Bowser aside, all characters sound almost as off as he does.

Why is this movie so beloved then? Why is it so high when it fails on almost everything? Simple, because it's Mario so you HAVE to like it, but if it wasn't for Mario this movie would never be as big as it is. Its fans will tell you to not listen to critics because they are "complaining" and "nitpicking", but in reality critics were the only audience that wasn't biased with this movie.… Expand

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is so amazing. The character designs in this are amazing. I also think Chris Pratt’s performance as Mario and Jack Black’s performance as Bowser are amazing.

One of the best game based animations. It's good to have new alternatives because Disney, Marvel and DC managed to destroy all the characters I liked in my childhood. After the disastrous live-action 1993’s Super Mario Bros. which led to Nintendo stopped licensing out their IPs to movie studios for movie adaptations for a long time until 2019’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Nintendo have decided to give a second chance to have another Mario movie with this time in an animated movie.

Two Italian-American brothers, Mario (Pratt) and Luigi (voiced by Charlie Day), are struggling plumbers in New York trying to start their plumbing business after leaving their employer and much to their father’s disappointment. After a news reported that there is a water leak in the city, the brothers use this opportunity to fix it hoping this will boost their publicity.

When Mario and Luigi go underground to fix the water pipe, they got suck into some kind of a warping pipe where they both get separate and end up in another dimension. Mario land in Mushroom Kingdom ruled by Princess Peach (Taylor-Joy) while Luigi land in Dark Lands ruled by Bowser (Black). With the help of Princess Peach, they work together and make new allies along the way not only to rescue Luigi but also to stop Bowser from using the recently stolen, Super Star, to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom if Princess Peach refuse to marry him.

If you ever think for one second that this movie will be like its live-action counterpart, you are totally wrong. This is movie is so super (pun intended) better. Not only the movie is fun and have many funny moments, this movie is faithful to the source material even with some deviations unlike the live-action movie. The voice acting performed by the cast is great in this movie especially Chris Pratt and Jack Bowser. Although it’s a disappointment that Charles Martinet, who is the original voice of Mario and Luigi in the games, did not voice the characters in the movie, the filmmakers still make an effort to gave him a voice cameo in the movie as a way to pay homage to him. This is something not often seen in other movies.

The animation is very well done and this is what I pretty much expected considering that this is the same animation studios that made Despicable Me franchise. It really looks a lot like their video game counterparts. The plot of the movie is pretty simple and not too convoluted but I think the plot is not nothing unique as this have been seen before many times in another movies. If you have play Mario games before, there are many things from the games are shown in this movie which you may be familiar which kind of makes this movie for fun. The only bad thing about this movie is I felt the ending is rushed right after the big battle to the point that it’s like the filmmakers want to end the movie as soon as possible.

Conclusion, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one of the few good video game movie adaptations in the late 2010s and 2020s. Hollywood movie studios should take note on how video game movie adaptations should be done especially if it’s a Japanese IP. This movie really redeems Mario franchise on the big screen. If you are fans of Mario games, this movie is a must watch. There is a mid-credits and post-credits scene especially the latter scene where it tease another familiar character from the franchise for a potential sequel.… Expand

A really good movie. It has amazing animations, is full of fun, has tons of fan-service and just wants to entertain. Also Jack Blacks performance as Bowser is more than memorable. It shows that if you make what fans want and stay away from politics you get a successful movie. Atop of this it is not even anti woke. Princess Peach is a strong and independent woman without harming her character, fan expectations and the enjoyment of the movie. She is awesome. Is it perfect or an all time classic? No but it is a breath fresh air or returning to old style when Disney and Pixar are failing. The story starts with Mario and Luigi who are plumbers in Brooklyn. They risk financially everything to start their own company and are drawn into the adventure. I stop here. The story is fateful to the source material and there is so much to discover. There are tons of Easter eggs and as Mario and Nintendo fan you will be amazed. As warning: It is entertaining if you are not that familiar but is a weaker experience(Tested with a friend that is familiar with just the basics). The animations are gorgeous to watch. All characters and the world are colorful and look like you imagined it. The voice actors fuilly deliver and I praise them all. The soundtrack is full of familiar Mario themes and they use a few pop songs. Those fell a bit forced but I don’t mind. Overall this is a must see movie. It is cementing Universals victory over Disney in animated movies. They beat them in their bread and butter category. I give a 9/10 as is weaker than the best animated movies of all time. Be warned: Not sure if this is an effect like eating normal food when starving (= Taste better than everything) because the animated movies before set the bar low.… Expand

One of the most unoriginal, shallow movies you'll see. If this were called anything else, No one would have seen this. It just so happens to be a Mario film and that is the sole reason it is getting any kind of praise.

First part of the movie is okay, although I don't know why they're doubling down on Luigi being a coward.

Thank God they didn’t.

I appreciate this movie for what it is - a fun film with a lot of clever references to the series it’s adapting. Although the story isn’t so deep. But that’s not what I’m looking for in a Mario movie, of all things.

Overall, I give it a fair 7/10. Watch this movie if you can.… Expand

If ever there was a movie's success that would embolden executives to ditch writers in favor of A.I. script writing, this would be it; you do not need a human to plug in a bunch of references and call it a day. Your time would be better served just playing a Mario Bros. game.… Expand

The references were good and subtle but it did heavily rely on them for marketing and getting people who played the OG game when they were younger to go see the movie, however the best part of the movie was definitely the Donkey Kong and Mario Kart stuff I mean for god sake they even used the DK Rap to introduce Donkey Kong (even if they didn't credit the composer) and the whole idea of the literal apes being the ones to invent cars was kind of funny. The only things that disappointed me about the movie were the fact that Luigi was set up as a side character (despite the fact that he could've easily gone on his own mini adventure or have been teamed up with Mario and Peach to stop Bowser) and the final battle being kind of underwhelming. All in all I'd definitely recommend this to any people who grew up on Mario and any Mario fans who want to see it.… Expand

PROS:
-The look of this movie is beautiful - especially the Mushroom Kingdom environment - and the characters are just as great looking as they are entertaining to watch.

-The story, simple as it is, is a breath of fresh air from more recent releases that seemed to rely on being incredibly convoluted at times.
-The action was incredibly fun to sit through, enhanced by the stunning visuals of course.
-The music was great to listen to throughout the whole thing; the combination of original music and Koji Kondo's themes from the video games were brought together beautifully in this film. Heck, even some of the songs they used worked well.

CONS:
-The overall casting, while not bad (see my mention of Jablinksi above), didn't really impress me all that much. Some bits of dialogue just felt awkward to me with the way they were delivered too. I can at least forgive it though, since it's in some part because...
-The script for this movie is not particularly well-written and the film moves along much quicker than it really needed to. Some lines, and scenes, are much too quick and to the point throughout the film, just giving you a Cliff Notes version of what each scene is supposed to contain when they could've been expanded on more.
-Characters like Toad and D.K. didn't really feel like they were all that necessary at times, which really hampers the movie a bit. It doesn't help that Keegan-Michael Key as Toad is annoying at times, and Seth Rogan is just playing himself but as a giant gorilla with a tie.
-Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong...is just there.
-Mario and Luigi, despite being the film’s titular main characters, don’t get to really do a lot together before they’re separated or even after they’ve reunited. This movie was just a Mario movie with Luigi as a side character (though that’s not all too surprising).
-The use of some songs (like A-Ha’s “Take on Me”) didn’t really feel like they needed to be there, and it didn’t help that an original composition from Brian Tyler was cut from the final film to be replaced with that. “D.K. Rap” also didn’t really feel like it belonged there, at least not to me.

Overall, it's not the greatest movie I've seen, but it's not the worst either (despite what Grace Randolph or other stuck-up critics would tell you).… Expand

Great movie.

Gorgeous animation filled with many fun scenes and so many references to the games, the nostalgia hits so hard. I think it is the movie with the most references that I ever saw, so I can see why so many people are angry, if IGreat movie.

The Mario Bros Movie was amazing and it's pretty obvious that it was made only for the fans of the series. The only thing that was a flaw was the pacing but everything else is fine. If you're a fan of Mario and Nintendo then this movie is for you.

Some of the music is downright lazy and unoriginal, especially when they have so much good Mario music to choose from. But no, they choose the most overused and cliche American pop song, yes, they are good songs, but they just wouldn't fit.

The plot is brainlessly simple without any twist, but I wouldn't hold it against them. Hey, that's a kid movie, just turn off your brain and enjoy it with your family.… Expand

A Mario adaptation made for the fans. So of course a lot of stiff critics hated the movie. Not only Mario fans but Nintendo players should enjoy the movie as well. It is overall a pretty good and funny movie to watch, especially in family. It's a short movie but really enjoyable and it seems it lasts 5 minutes for how funny and entertaining it is.

The animations are amazing, the colour and the environmen too.

I think the critics' reviews do not honor the film. You don't go to see Mario Bros expecting a great story arc or spectacular visual shots. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros-The references are good nostalgia for Mario fans. It defies old stereotypes of princesses having to be rescued. It also shows Mario as a loyal person looking out for his brother,as well as extremely resilient and determined. The voice acting is not too shabby,with Jack black being the mvp in voice acting here. Lumalee is suicidal which is rare to see in films,which intrigued me,standing out as more unique.
Cons- Bowser has a very unhealthy obesession with Princess Peach and sings a song about it. The lyrics make his crush come off very obesessive,making me wince at that as well as the off-key shouting at the end. I'm not a big fan of obesessive love,so i didn't really enjoy this part. The story is not that impressive and could be better,could use more thematic elements… Expand

I actually really enjoyed this film as a major Mario Bros fan, sure the plot and pacing may be lacking in some areas, but I think because of how fun and faithful it is to the actual Mario games is what got me to love this film so much. This truly is a movie made for fans and is an excellent movie for families because of how fun it is. The animation is amazing as well, which should further incentivize you to go out and watch it.

Edit: After a couple of months I decided to bump my score down a bit since the film itself is very just middle of the road after thinking about it, I think it should've took more queues from the RPGs and had more luigi scenes, and more substance in general.… Expand

I'm giving this a 10 not only because like I said, even if Mario and Luigi doesn't really speak too Italian enough, there's no woke stuff here, and aside from that, it also it produced such a really decent action from donkey kong, the final battle, lots of cameo appearances from some other characters related to Mario. We also have that really iconic Peaches song in here that became a meme material and it definitely is holding up. I dunno about you but you should watch this than the newer 2021-2023 movies that one particular woke movie studio produces.… Expand

While this movie is a fun time and the references are cool if you turn your brain off, if you want plot, character depth or any of the other things that made movies like Aladdin or the lion king interesting look elsewhere, this movie is a shallow advertisement with all the character development of a sports game, peach is improved from her game counterpart but that's a low bar, as is everything else about the characters, bowser is a simp who's interesting in the first scene he's shown in and nowhere else he's not threatening, and not cool, he's stupid and comic relief most of the time, the top quality animation does little to distract from the stupid licensed songs that have no right to be there, the voices of bowser toad and Luigi are good, but peaches voice feels out of place but still good enough and Mario's voice is awful, the pacing is all out of whack and with the run time the entire half of the movie spent getting the Kong army is rendered pointless by an explosion dropping them into the sea, Luigi miraculously stops being afraid the second Mario drops in instead of shining some light on a character arc,
not a single character in the movie has an arc, they're only slightly less static than their game counterparts, I didn't expect Aladdin level story, but I did expect at least characters with more depth than cardboard.… Expand

The thing is that the script, the plot is built for ages 8-13. Yes, adults can relish in the high-tech animation and enjoy nostalgic pop songs like "Take on Me" and ELO's "Mr Blue Sky" which leads into final credits, but most of the situations and certainly the fight physics are ludicrous, unless you're ages 8-13. The voice cast is comprised of A-list actors but they either can't do voice overs or they just didn't try, and you know why? There was not one credit for voice director or coach! A gazillion credits listed for animators, artists, musicians, and even a credit for a sole intern(!) but not a voice director. Young kids and their parents will certainly give high scores and they're the ones that led this film to its $1.3B w/w box office haul, but for everyone else, it's just a meh thing.… Expand

This movie is literally OP as hell, the movie is so funny and awesome. It is better than the 1993 film which failed, but here are some positive highlights I made:

1. The Humor is really good, I can tell that Nintendo and Illumination put all of this work into this.
2. Animation and CGi is really impressive, the character models look great also.
3. The cast including Chris Pratt and Jack Black are funny especially the latter who sang “Peaches” which is a great song.
4. This is just critic’s opinion that they hated the amount of easter eggs, but it will make fans of the Mario series remember what they saw.
Bonus: At the end, I showed my father to stay to watch the post-credit scene and when he heard the word “YOSHI!” He laughed about it because he likes Yoshi.
Although I am mad that Wario and Waluigi did not appear in the film, it was an awesome night and probably that biggest movie night I had because my friends, their parents, their grandmother, my parents, my younger sister, my older sister, and her boyfriend. It was OP… Expand

The only real problems are the licensed tracks “Holding out for a Hero” and “Take on Me”.
