Once again Gunn proved himself to be one of the greats when it comes to making superhero/Villain movies. Suicide Squad combines some great light hearted jokes with serious character building and story and tops it all off with a gory joyride of carnage that I would easily recommend to anyone, as long as your not afraid of a bit of blood.

I'm not sure whether this is a sequel to the maligned Suicide Squad from a few years ago, or if this is some kind of reboot. Either way, the folks at DC Comics want this ensemble to take off and be a part of its universe to rival the Marvel-verse. James Gunn, who is responsible for the successful Guardians of the Galaxy movies, directs The Suicide Squad and attempts to bring some his Marvel magic to the DC world. Here's how it goes.

To be candid, I never saw Suicide Squad. I'd heard such terrible things that I did not give it a chance. I really didn't know much about the characters going into this movie and that turned out to be a good thing. The Suicide Squad focuses on a group of supervillains incarcerated at Belle Reve who are tapped by the ruthless, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), to complete a Black Ops mission in exchange for a reduction of their sentences. In this iteration, Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) team up with others to dismantle a secret government project in the island of Corto Maltese. Lots of violence, gore, and quips ensue.

What people really come to a movie like The Suicide Squad for is the spectacle. James Gunn has packed this flick full of spectacle. There are so many explosions and kills that your eyes are bouncing from every corner of the screen. DC Comics, apparently, are not shying away from that R-rating - it is earned in spades. There is so much gore splattered all over the screen that it's surprising that none got on me. While a bit overindulgent at a certain point, the kills do make these determined supervillain seem to earn their stripes.

James Gunn translates his success from the Guardians movies here and infuses the Squad with one-liners, winks and a lot of musical cues. Luckily, Gunn's writing and the assembled cast are up for the challenge. Elba and Cena have a good amount of chemistry as rivals in this gang. They both have a self-serious energy that turns into some very funny moments. Cena has done this kind of goofy energy before, but Elba's dry humor seems to fit just as well. I'll also note that in this third performance as Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie has found her stride. She has a good balance of daffy, dastardly comedy and she kicks butt. Harley Quinn is a fun character that can become grating, but there's just the right amount here.

Ultimately, The Suicide Squad is just a good comic book movie about these supervillains on this fill-in-the-blank mission to stop an evil person from doing a bad thing with an alien invader. It's not a particularly special or novel concept, and James Gunn does a good job of making it entertaining by using his Guardians of the Galaxy tricks. What's surprising is that it works well-enough without being silly, boring or too dark, which has been a problem for other DC Comics movies. I've decided I will not watch Suicide Squad because I do not want to taint my enjoyment of The Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad is a definite watch on HBO Max. It's funny and entertaining with a lot of music and gory violence, if that's your thing. You'll want to grab a big box of popcorn and watch it multiple times.

Now, as for the theater, I didn't think that The Suicide Squad does anything different or new such that you should pay full price at a theater. You can really tell that it is influenced by Guardians of the Galaxy and that it desperately wants to reach Marvel highs. I don't think it does that, but that doesn't mean it's not still good or a worthy viewing experience. If you want to go to a theater, catch it at a matinee with a bowl of popcorn.

There is no continuity of what people can and cannot take throughout the film, especially considering the opening sequence. The most amazing thing is that the main threat is an analogy for Covid-19 being research in China by the US. For being bold enough to release this movie anyway, I give it an extra +0.5.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gunn shows that in the right hands DC properties can thrive on screen, unfortunately these hands aren't there to stay. It was kinda funny to me that it took a director from Marvel to make the first great DC movie in over a decade, yet DC and its actors still attempt to talk **** on Marvel lol. Though this was the best thing to come out of the "DCEU" so far it is not without its faults, most notably the humor falling flat in certain scenes, and while watching this I noticed that most of those scenes involved Quinn. DC has been trying their asses off to make Quinn into a fan favorite, almost like a reverse Deadpool, and while they have gained some traction it felt like many of her scenes were added in post production due to their lack of relevance to the plot (I would theorize that if so it was at WB's behest). But honestly though all the best scenes aside from watching almost all of the first team dying of the beach did not include her, which begs the question: was she part of the problem with the first suicide squad movie? Anyways Gunn has a gift for working with obscure comic book characters and it really shows here, it's just unfortunate that DC most likely won't learn from this and will likely just keep making the same mediocre to just bad movies. The Suicide Squad is the perfect mix when you put The Expendables, Guardians of The Galaxy and Deadpool in a blender. Great action, some funny jokes but mostly 13 years old childish humor, excesive use of time jumping (one is fine, but come on!), perfect casting but Gunn used some character so badly and Waller's resolution was far worse than "Martha moment". Villains had great potential but they were irrelevant for the history, Didn't feel like a real threat in any time.

The most redeemable point of the film is that it feels like a James Gunn movie and the studio let him do whatever sh*t he wanted. Gunn wanted animal cruelty, Warner Bros delivered it. Murder of innocents and children? No problem for Warner. And that's great, because these are bad guys and bad guys do sh*t like that.

I really hope Warner maintains this way of working with the talents in further films.

The Suicide Squad is the best movie of the DCEU? Not even close. Will I watch it again? I doubt it but I wouldn't mind having it as background noise and I can't say the same about WW84, BoP or Josstice League.

I have a strong suspicion James Gunn had nothing to do with the movie, he gave a college intern $20 and his face mask to pretend to be him. I cannot describe how terrible this movie is - not the actors fault, they were given a garbage plot with garbage dialogue. I was prepared to turn off my mind for senseless violence and crude humor and they even messed that up: with bad guys not even fighting back as they're mowed down or shooting with a precision that makes stormtroopers look like snipers, not to mention 90% of the one liners falling flat. The pacing is the worst in recent memory with flashbacks to character building backstory mid fight and multiple back and forth time skips.... unfortunately it's not original enough to be so bad it's good - no trash cult classic here just a waste of money that apart from a good special effects department and actors who are too good for this movie. Directed byEVERY time I give a DC film a chance or the benefit of the doubt, I ALWAYS come out regretting it, and this film was certainly no exception, as it managed to outdo the awful and underwhelming first 'Suicide Squad' film as well. Directed by James Gunn (of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' films), what started out in the first half as a somewhat humorous and playful film quickly dived headfirst into absolute mind-numbing CGI/explosion-galore absurdity, shameless gore, and an all-around jumbled and messy story that I couldn't have cared less about. It also REALLY dragged on. With the exception of Margot Robbie and John Cena having their fair share of humorous and scene-stealing moments, EVERYBODY else (yes, even the normally very talented Idris Elba and Viola Davis) were all pitifully wasted. But the worst part? You wanna know what the big main threat is in the second half of this mess of a film? Starfish. A GIANT STARFISH. Yes it's as ridiculous as it sounds. Overall, it's just another shameless, half-assed, and all-around mind-numbing DC film that just continues to remind me why the MCU is consistently better. At least they actually try to come up with decent stories with reasonable premises rather than relying on cheap gore and absolutely absurd premises Expand

I am worried that the pandemic will make The Suicide Squad look like a lesser success than 2016's Suicide Squad. That first movie is NOT the way to make a movie. But money talks loudest in Hollywood. We'll have to wait and see. And maybe a simultaneous theatrical and streaming release is not the best approach. F9 seems to be doing great because Universal released theatrically in June 25, then on streaming on July 30, over a month later. By August, worldwide box office is $643 million. Finally, there's a factor Warner Bros. could not have predicted, the Delta variant will likely depress theatrical screenings. F9 and A Quiet Place 2 both didn't have to cope with the variant.

They don't even try to ground it in reality and it just makes me not care.

I can look past some things, like a talking shark, but I don't understand why it's so hard for hollywood to do a movie like this, but actually put SOME effort into the logic of everything. They are always so lazy and it just makes me not care.

I don't really want to support movies like this, even though I like some stuff, because it will just open the door for more mindless crap from hollywood in the future and I'd rather they were forced to put more actual thought into their movies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well....this movie was insane, I mean really insane, but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. This is more of a comparison than a review, but I will kinda of review it. I'm gonna start with what I think this film did better than David Ayer's Suicide Squad and then say what I think David Ayer's Suicide Squad did better than James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

What I think it did better than David Ayer's film:
The Cinematography and the action sequences: By the looks of it the action sequences were done more practically than in Ayer's version, takes were longer and more of the action was visible than Ayer's. The action sequences were beautifully shot, the camera was always following the action so you wouldn't miss much.
The Visual Effects & Costume Design: Surprisingly the visual effects in this film was phenomenal, I wasn't expecting it to look as good as it did, especially the CGI character of King Shark, the detail on his skin was mind-blowingly good, he really look real, yes I know he really isn't a regular shark given that he's walking around like a human but that's how good it was to me, plus the big baddie at the end Starro, once you were able to see what it looked like I was stunned at how well it blended in the live action elements, like King Shark the detail on Starro was insanely good. Now the costumes are exactly as I was expecting, when you have characters like Polka Dot Man, TDK, Javelin, and Peacemaker who are some the lesser known DC villain's who you consider C, D, or even lower grade villains of course their costumes are going to be absolutely ridiculous, and they totally are, but they looked amazing, some of them were vibrant with color as given so much detail that they looked awesome. Bloodsport and Harley Quinn's costumes were the standouts for me, I thought Bloodsports mask was freaking awesome, I got a Xenomorph vibe from it which was cool as hell, and Harley's costume felt like it was ripped from the comic pages itself, especially the two tone color scheme.
Some of the Lead and "Some of the" Supporting Cast: Idris Elba's Bloodsport and John Cena's Peacemaker were real standout among this ridiculously massive and star packed cast, especially how funny the two of them were especially when the two were trying to kill people in a more creative way as a way to prove who's better at killing. Daniela Melchior and David Dastmalchian as Ratcatcher 2 and Polka Dot Man were the emotional core of the film, Gunn really did a great job getting you to really feel for these characters and their backstories. Viola Davis as expected did a fantastic job as Amanda Waller, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag made a HUGE improvement from the previous film, he wasn't as wooden as he was before.
Gunn's Signature Style: This film is very reminiscent of Gunn's Style of film from before he did Guardians of the Galaxy, they were screwed up and gory as hell, the fact that Warner Bros let him use that for a comic book movie is actually refreshing in the massive market of comic movies and shows, every now and then you have to change things up to keep it interesting and I'm happy he could let loose with this movie.

Now I really didn't like David Ayer's Suicide Squad but I'll admit there are some things I think it did a little better:
The Soundtrack: I know it's weird to start this off with that, but to be honest the music in Ayer's version is superior by quite a margin, I listen to a lot it's music still 5 years later, I mean come on, Skrillex, Lil Wayne, Twenty One Pilots, War, CCR, Rolling Stones, Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons, Queen, Eminem! So many artists, it was a little disappointing but I'll admit that a good chunk of the budget for Gunn's version went to that ridiculously massive cast, so this a bit of nit pick.
Pacing, The off-putting Animal Cruelty, and Unnecessary Character Deaths: Ok, before I start, the whole Animal Cruelty thing, it's a nitpick also, i just didn't really understand why it needed to in the film, but this is coming from James Gunn's twisted mind, so I guess i should've expected it, but it just a tad too much. Now the pacing was a little slow when it came to the 2nd act of Gunn's version, but there was a lot of character development that needed to happen, but Ayer's version flowed better in my honest opinion given it was shorter. Finally, them character deaths, when they killed Slipknot in Ayer's version it sucked but it needed to happen, but when Boomerang, Flagg, and Polka Dot Man were killed off, it really didn't make much sense to me, especially Boomerang and Polka Dot Man.
Overall, I loved The Suicide Squad, it was an insanely fun and hilarious film packed to the brim with some awesome bloody and gorey action sequences some surprisingly outstanding VFX and a great cast with some awesome on screen chemistry was damn near perfect, but that second act slowed it a tad too much and some of the characters should of have more screen time, but James Gunn delivers it in style.

The Suicide Squad was able to win me over as the best DCEU movie in the first 10 minutes of its run time. The Suicide Squad is unique, not feeling like most superhero flicks before it. Warner Brothers is no longer trying to copy the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it’s working out really well. The film was able to manage being really dark, without falling into the same traps that the Snyderverse set for itself. The Snyderverse sometimes tries to be extra gritty in an attempt to stand out, but it can sometimes lead to really boring scenes. That’s a comment I make as a Snyderverse fan. Some other things I liked about the movie were the editing, the cast, and the special effects. I went into the movie without doubts about the quality of the acting and special effects, but I did doubt the editing would be anything to write home about. Thankfully, the movie exceeded all of my expectations in those areas. I also think that this movie works as a great James Gunn movie. The soundtrack really works well, something you can always look forward to in a Gunn flick. I was worried about the movie possibly using all its jokes in the trailer, but I was dead wrong. The movie is hilarious. If I had to recommend the movie to anyone, I’d recommend it to comic book fans, people who aren’t turned off by gore, and people who don’t take themselves too seriously. First of all, this movie is HILARIOUS and I have no freaking idea where to start. Not to mention that this is the goriest DC film that matches the quality how the suicide squad is portrayed in the comics and Gunn has done justice. Secondly, the narrative structure with its characters are heartfelt in which us as the audience can easily care for. (Expect a lot of memes on Polkadot Man and you'll see how relevant he is to us and King Shark lol) Almost everyone from the original hot topic Ayer directed PG13 Suicide Squad are back and this sequel-boot has brought in justice done right. Let's not forget to mention that James Gunn's Harley Quinn is the most definitive Harley Quinn we've got and Margot Robbie killed it again since her recent appearance in her Birds of Prey spinoff. The cast is great, the production design is convincingly sharp, and the overall presentation in terms of narrative is just icing on the cake. If I were you, I may see this in theaters before the Delta Variant gets even worse because this is the best DC film we've got. Expand

The scene where Cleo talks about her late father was a highlight, so was Rick Flag's death, I didn't expect to get teary eyed during this movie but here we are, James Gunn is a genius, a few of the standouts were: Ratcatcher 2 (Cleo) played by Daniela Melchior, Bloodsport (Robert) played by Idris Elba, Rick Flag played by Joel Kinnaman, King Shark (Nanaue) played by Sylvester Stallone, Weasel played by Sean Gunn & last but not least Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie.

Imagine if David Ayer had been given that freedom back in 2016?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely brilliant. James Gunn's best film to date. This feels like the suicide squad movie we should have gotten in 2016. It's incredibly violent, and it uses that to it's advantage. A few jokes don't land, but the ones that do, are great. Starro is terrifying, and one of the best parts of the movie. Definitely the best film of the year, thus far. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So... Gunn went Rian Johnson's way of subverting expectations and killed almost everyone in first 10 minutes. This movie is more cartoonish than Tom & Jerry. It's bright, gory, trying too hard to be fun and most of the humor comes from voice acting done by Sly. Waller is not herself. It's hard to believe she let her staff live after what they did to her in the final act. Remember, this is the woman who killed everyone expendable during rescue in Ayer's movie. Also, her office now looks like a shelter for homeless. There are no real shockers but the movie is really well cut and the simplicity of the story is it's biggest advantage. Not sure if it's worth watching in theater. Rather a meh than a bang. Expand

The Suicide Squad is a sequel/semi-reboot to the critically panned Suicide Squad (2016). The 2016 movie tried to replicate James Gunn's Guardian of the Galaxy but failed miserably. So for the second Suicide Squad movie, why not just hiredThe Suicide Squad is a sequel/semi-reboot to the critically panned Suicide Squad (2016). The 2016 movie tried to replicate James Gunn's Guardian of the Galaxy but failed miserably. So for the second Suicide Squad movie, why not just hired James Gunn himself? The premise is "The government sends the most dangerous supervillains in the world -- Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and others -- to the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Armed with high-tech weapons, they trek through the dangerous jungle on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Col. Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave". So is this a failed mission or is it one to remember?

Firstly, The Suicide Squad is an absolute blast to watch as it contains all of James Gunn's iconic charm from GoTG. There are the characters with their vibrant and distinct personalities, even for characters of limited screen time. The visuals are stylistic, from war looking jungles to colourful fever dreams that are contrasting but mesh well together. The pounding and awesome soundtrack returns but are utilized more effectively here than the 2016 version. The action scenes range from cool to even downright bonkers which is just so entertaining. Of course, The Suicide Squad is also very hilarious with a lot of laughs.

One thing in The Suicide Squad that is different from GoTG is the hard R Rating which James embraces. The action scenes are ultra-violent in their blood and gore with the destruction feeling very impactful. James Gunn also uses the R rating to allow for some dark humour which just really works. The characters in The Suicide Squad are mostly composed of B-tier villains but James manages to make us take some of them relatively seriously by giving them some depth. The biggest surprises have got to be Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Polka dot man (David Dastmalchian) and Peacemaker (John Cena). Ratcatcher 2 is the heart of this film as she is the one with the kindest nature in the team and her powers of controlling rats are made more interesting and cooler thanks to James Gunn. Polka dot man sounds incredibly stupid but is made very sympathetic in a weird way. Peacemaker is a douche but I do love his rivalry with Bloodsport (Idris Elba).

On that note, the actors all do an excellent job. Margot Robbie was already great as Harley but she has embodied the character perfectly to the point I can't see any other actress as Harley. Idris Elba is still charming as the gruff guy and while it is a role he played many times before, he is still great at it. John Cena isn't an actor I am fond of but he puts a lot more acting chops in The Suicide Squad which was surprising to see. The others are also great and it is very clear that they are having a real fun time in the role including returning actors from Suicide Squad (2016). The story of The Suicide Squad is very simple but engaging thanks to the characters and the unexpected twist and turns. It also explores some interesting themes including corrupt governments. The Suicide Squad is advertised as anyone can die and there are some surprising deaths for sure.

However, due to the huge amount of characters and cast, some get killed off without really getting to do anything significant which is a shame. There are also a lot of shots where it is just a lot of grey and dullness to it. We got grey buildings, grey rooms and grey offices which are just not that interesting to look at. There is also one plot thread that was disappointing which is Bloodsport and his relationship with his daughter. His relationship with his daughter is very sour but his daughter being threatened by Waller is the reason for him joining the squad. Yet we don't get a proper resolution to this apart from one line that kind of resolves it but in a very unsatisfying way. Additionally, Bloodsport's character arc just sort of happens. I wish they gave him more scenes or flashbacks to build it up instead of just one conversation with Ratcatcher 2.

Overall, The Suicide Squad is everything Suicide Squad (2016) should've been. It's fun, joyful and off the walls crazy in the most entertaining of ways. James Gunn and WB succeed in delivering a successful DCEU entry and this makes me very hopeful for this cinematic universe.

I counted about over 9 villains and still I couldn't follow who was supposed to be the main issue for the overall story because really they all posed the same amount of threat. Aka they were all easily taken down.along with that nothing made sense with whole spear gig
to cut it short it was too much happening at once.i didn't even know the guys name was blood sport until I googled it.
I would give it one star because I enjoyed the shark but that would just be pity.im sorry I didn't enjoy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, after seeing the trailer - I really had some hype about watching this movie. I did expect it to be on the level of the first Suicide Squad or even better! But my expectations were not meant to be...

The movie starts with an utmost and unnecessary massacre of quite a lot of well-known characters (such as Captain Boomerang, who was one of my favorite. Blasted after just one throw of his boomerang), and quite in a "brutal" way. It looked like DC tried to fish people into cinemas with these well-known names and then just blow them up while saying "hey, you're watching it already, so no matter"...

And then starts a stupid adventure of the dumbest team ever on a mission "nobody knows what or why" while blasting everyone around like it's just another day. It looks cheap and childish, but with an R

The dumb plot that Flag just suddenly decides to betray his government and his country, even though he has been working for the Suicide Squad Project, is just too damn stupid. Especially with how Peacemaker suddenly goes to stop him... Come on, creating a conflict out of nowhere is....disappointing...

Harley kills out a whole military outpost (that was guarding her) like it's nothing. And I mean it! She didn't get a scratch. But killed almost 30 people in there... DC, Harley is cool yeah...but she is NOT A SUP

And finally, the overall protagonist - the ALLMIGHTY SPACE PATRICK THE STARFISH!

OH. COME. ON Like, the whole crew didn't have a better idea about the final danger/boss?? A giant space starfish, who wants to destroy the whole city? I mean, really...?? How old are your designers/scriptwriters? 10, 12 years old?

An utter disappointment... If I weren't visiting the cinema with my friends and drinking some beer - I would've been really depressed after watching this...

DC, You should start putting some effort in your movies...unless You want to do trash-films....

Anything ranging from safe and boring or technically well-made but disposable, at best. Because sometimes following the same formula will eventually wear fin and more risk taking needs to happen. And here we have ‘The Suicide Squad’, the soft reboot to the 2016 film, but this time directed by Gunn himself, where he delivers a highly entertaining movie that is bursting with creativity and ultra-violence. James Gunn once again shakes up the superhero formula with a slick style.

I just can't believe we got something like this. It's 2 hours and 12 minutes long, but it's always on the move. It’s bonkers from start till finish, and I enjoyed every minute of it. This is probably one of the best shot movies in the DCU. The soundtrack is great as well and used effectively. The action scenes were insane and made the overall experience one of the most fun I had at the cinema in a long time. A massive improvement over the 2016 film, AKA ‘the studio cut’, is that the movie doesn’t look ugly and isn’t chopped together by trailer editors. The movie is vibrant in colours that made it look pleasing to the eye. The structure at times is messy, and yet strangely well-paced, as there’s a lot going on.

Did I mention the movie is very gory? It’s cartoonish violence, or what people call "adult superhero movie", so it's not for kiddies or for the faint of heart. You would probably guess that not everybody on the team is going to make it to the end credits, so deaths are to be expected, but how certain characters “bite the dust” are so unexpectedly gruesome and brutal, it took me by surprise each time. The marketing for the movie was right, don’t get too attached. As I said before, James Gunn had complete creative control over the movie, and he doesn’t hold back on what he wrote and show on screen. But then again, it's a movie, it's not real, the actors who die on screen are fine in real life...I think.

All the cast members have equal amount of time to shine, and you like these super villains this time around, as each character had wonderful chemistry with each other. John Cena plays Peacemaker, who can be best described as a “douchebag version of Captain America”. An extreme patriot who will do the most horrific things for liberty. John Cena excels in the deadpan line delivery for comedic effect, but surprisingly enough, worked well in the serious moments. Looking forward to the spin-off show ‘Peacemaker’. Margot Robbie once again nails the role of the chaotic but gleeful Harley Quinn. While the character isn’t front and centre this time around, more of a side character, but whenever the character is on screen, it’s instantly memorable. Idris Elba plays Bloodsport, a contract killer who’s doing time in prison after failing to kill Superman with a kryptonite bullet, while also dealing with family issues, especially with his daughter. While the character may sound like Will Smith’s Deadshot from the 2016 film, but trust me, the execution here is much stronger. This is by far Elba’s best work in a while. Charismatic and a strong leading presence.

Polka Dot Man, played by character actor David Dastmalchian, a socially awkward, weird, and lame sounding character that has some serious mummy issues, which has a funny running visual gag throughout. However, because of Gunn’s writing and Dastmalchian's performance, the character is more than a joke, but a unique character to watch.

Ratcatcher 2, played wonderfully by Daniela Melchior, who brought so much warmth and heart to the film. I loved how they tied in her tragic backstory into the finale, as it honestly made me cry. And let’s not forget the king himself, King Shark, voiced by Sylvester Stallone. He stole every scene he’s in, because he’s so adorable and has such kind eyes, but when he’s hungry, he can be a killing machine. The rest of the supporting cast, even in the smaller roles, still manage to stand out amidst all the chaos. I liked Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag a lot more this time around, because the actor was given more to work with in terms of good material. Viola Davis is brilliant as the cold and ruthless Amanda Waller. And Peter Capaldi is always a pleasure to see. Also, I like the character of Weasel, who I can describe as a unholy offspring of Shin Godzilla and Rocket Racoon. He may not be beautiful to look at, but he's beautiful to me. Like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, the movie has a lot of heart and I like how they took certain characters, who on page sound stupid and ridiculous but are handled with such love and depth, while also being self-aware of its own characterization.

You can literally watch this as a standalone movie and you won’t be lost or confused, as you don’t need to watch 22 other movies to understand it. This is by far the strongest entry in this jumbled mess of a cinematic universe.

I'll start with the reactions I heard - which are obviously not scientific - but seemed that every group watching it were split between liking it and hating it. My wife thought it was the worst CBM she's ever seen.

For me it was pretty enjoyable, but completely over the top on some of the gore and other bits just seemed completely unnecessary. The comedy fell flat for me - Peacemaker in particular was as irritating as a dose of scabies.

All that said - some of the cinematography was amazing, and the effects were superb. Not a dodgy mustache in sight. The ultimate feeling I left with was that while it shared characters from the original SS, it in no way felt connected to the DCEU for me. Maybe the next few movies being released can go some way toward remedying that for me.

Idris Elba and Daniela Melchior were the definite highlights - but I find it baffling that they saw anything in this movie which made them think Peacemaker was deserving of his own series.

Overall - a definite improved on the studio release of Suicide Squad - but nowhere near a DC highpoint in my opinion, and I'm really in no rush to rewatch it.

The entire movie was filled with over the top jokes that almost always fell flat. Idris Elba and Margot Robbie really saved this movie from being a complete disaster. John Cena is painful to watch, and the rest of the characters were OK. There were quite a few scenes where it seems they were told to just improve, and it never worked. There's also no build up or tension in these movies anymore, instead it seems James Gunn is intent on trying to jam in as much content as possible within the 2 hour time block. On the plus side, there was some interesting visual scenes and artistic direction. Unfortunately it was often overshadowed by how intentionally over the top the entire movie was. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 6.5 out of 10. Although it was definitely an entertaining film, it let me down a bit. I feel like a lot was given away by the trailers. The best jokes, the best shots (King Shark ripping the man in half and Harley going full berserker with flower pedals exploding behind her), and some key details of the film (that there were going to be two suicide squad teams with the Harley, Boomerang, Weasel, TDK, Savant, Javalin, and Mongal being a team that would likely be wiped out early in the film resulting in Harley needing [not really] to be rescued AND that Polka Dot Man was almost certainly going to die after declaring himself a hero) were all given away in the trailers.

Other than that, the film was very enjoyable just a bit predictable due to poor marketing. The best surprises were how cool Bloodsport's gimmick ending up looking and how well done Ratcatcher 2's story was - on an emotional level.

James Gunns Suicide Squad is a zany gore fest that tells a enjoyable story with some of DC most obscure villains as well as some more popular ones such as Harley Quin and Shark king.

For me at least the humour landed, the action was mostly good with one scene being the exception and the archs and character development for Polkadot Man, Bloodsport and rat catcher 2 all being satisfying and Silvester Stallones King Shark served as a comedic relief that never felt out of place and the dynamic between characters was particularly good.

The film has far more stakes then most movies in the genre with characters dying left and right which makes it all the more enjoyable. It's a good film all around as long as you're okay with a film being a little quirky and crazy.

They are all given some nice backstory, just enough to get you invested without distracting you from the thrilling action. The grand finale delivers in terms of scale and makes the film feel easily on a par with anything marvel has to offer. There is a beautiful message at the end too that leaves you feeling almost choked up. Expand

Seriously though, I did really enjoy this, though I'd say it had second act problems and the plot was fairly thin. Building off of a **** foundation, the first half of the movie was rebuilding the squad into something the audience could get behind. And Gunn did a great job of doing that. Idris Alba stole the show, though, as did Rat Catcher2 for me. The villains really let us down though, not counting Uber Patrick. I just wish they'd have fleshed them out more as their whole plot was wonky and thin. I also think this movie really capitalized on the R-rating. In fact, this would not have worked as a PG-13. Good fun, though, and a vast improvement on the original. Expand

Some are more established than others, as expected when characters die. Margot Robbie and Idris Elba are standouts in the group as they carry the most charm. Overall a very fun and enjoyable movie. Its OK.

It is incredibly flawed, but its OK.

As someone who bleeds DC it really hurt to rate this as low as I did. Its above average but not a revelation.

The comedy is the key strength and it starts off strong in this department but starts to lull and lose steam starting in the last 45 minutes.

The cast is largely OK. This was a major redemption for Robbie as Harley after the solo movie was so rancid.

The majority of the main cast put in decent performances. As expected Elba was good, as was Kinnaman. What they did with Stalone was pleasantly unexpected, albeit it INCREDIBLY derivative of Groot. While she did OK there was entirely too much screen time dedicated for Daniela Melchior as she was only there to humanize these characters which misses the point.

Cena was a poor mans Rock and it really shows. Hes not as bad as the goofy 80s wrestlers when they tried to act but hes for the most part just there. He is intended to be comic relief but being stupid isnt really funny.

That leads into the real problems. The writing is by far the weakest element. Some of the comedy is great, but you really get the feeling that this was Gunn's catharsis of being underneath the thumb of the plague rats standard operating procedures. So of course its pointlessly profane, with excessive nudity both female and male. Adding basically nothing to the end product. Visually its almost uneventful for the source material. All of this amounts to a production that is like a 14 year olds dream flick knowing a 14 year old is not supposed to be the target demographic. Just like Disney super hero movies this incarnation of suicide squad was wrung out of depth and stuffed with tropes instead of exposition. Granted no one comes to a super hero movie expecting Shakespeare, but this should have been better than a contrived and derivative mindless popcorn muncher bomb that lulls you to sleep with how "awesome" it thinks it is.

Honestly I would give this a high D, but its barely passing cause once the comedy runs out halfway through its just a slog to get through the last quarter of the film.

So Ill give it an appropriate 6.9 and yeah honestly rounding down to a 6 because I expected better from DC. This wasnt supposed to be dirty Disney but that is basically what we got and that is not acceptable.

Been so excited for this movie for a while and it did not disappoint. Easily my favourite film in the DCEU. Almost everything about it was great in my opinion, and I just had a total blast the entire time. First off the characters were great here, far better than the ones in the first movie. It’s hard to choose a favourite because I felt that they all offered a ton to the movie. I’d probably say Ratcatcher was one of the main highlights for me, she was definitely the heart of the movie and I did feel for her character, she was just so sweet and innocent. Idris Elba as Bloodsport was great as the leader of the group, Rick Flag was far better than last time, King Shark was hilarious, John Cena as Peacemaker was awesome, and so on. Again I enjoyed everyone here. The action was phenomenal as well. The movie uses the R rating so well with tons of gruesome moments) and there’s a lot of badass scenes (one of the highlights for me was with Harley Quinn) who I forgot to mention was really good here, still debating if it’s my favourite interpretation of her in the DCEU though. I also loved the style of the movie. The way it would transition between scenes with text pop ups was really smart, and I loved the way they integrated them into the scenery. Cinematography wise it was great as well. Loved the look of everything, and I found the CGI to have no weak spots, unlike a lot of the other DCEU films. If there was one negative I had, it would be the humour. There’s a lot of funny stuff here, but for James Gunn, I thought there would have been more laugh out loud moments. So comparing this to the GOTG movies, I’d say they’re funnier to me (definitely smarter with their humour.) Overall I loved this film and I can’t wait to see it a second time, which I’ll be sure to do in IMAX again. Definitely my favourite DCEU film and probably one of my favourite CMB movies of all time. (With a second viewing, I could easily see this going up to a 10) I have a small second negative which is kind of a spoiler, so don’t read further, just know that I loved this! Expand

The Suicide Squad which is standalone sequel of Suicide Squad (2016), was way way better than the latter. This is what happens when studio gives all power to the director and doesn't interfere.

The movie blended drama, action and comedy perfectly. The previous one was not properly balanced, but this one was. There are a lot of shocks and surprises. The background music was also good and suiting every scene. Every actor gave a performance that you will remember.

Overall, this movie is surely a treat for comic book fans. You will enjoy it.

- Бладспорт - получился очень живым и интересным персонажем, а его ирония и безысходность, а также земмифобия просто бесценны;
- Харли Квинн - боже мой именно в этом фильме показан её самый лучший и каноничный образ. Именно здесь она наконец-то превращается в ту драйвовую антигероиню, которую мы так сильно полюбили: одинаково обаятельную и сумасшедшую. Она без умолку болтает и совершенно непредсказуемо реагирует на любую ситуацию. Она просто невероятна;
- Рик Флэг - после 1-го фильма очень сильно изменился, стал куда более комедийным героем, смотрится это гораздо лучше;
- Миротворец - безжалостный, опасный, но тупой. Получился нормальным. А соперничество с Бладспортом - это вообще настоящая ржака;
- Крысолов 2 – персонаж, которую можно назвать чуть ли не единственным по-настоящему добросердечным персонажем в фильме, и этим она на многое в истории влияет. Лично для меня это лучший персонаж фильма. А Себастиан - милашка;
- Человек-в-Горошек - неплох, в целом вышел достаточно простым и по-своему интересным персонажем, больше добавить нечего;

I think it's because they want to rush too much. And they started to make Superman vs Batman movie without enough single hero movies before. It should be like a comic movie that has a few main characters first and then make the team movie. But this one is a very good commercial and entertainment film. Most people will love it even if they don't know anyone except the joker girl. This movie is much better than the first one and the Harley Quinn movie. I think it's also better than the Wonder Woman movie, the Wonder Woman movie looks more for the lower age audiences. After all, this is a R rated movie. The director of this movie is also the director of Guardians of the Galaxy. There are various people in this movie, but even if you don't recognize any of them, the movie is still pretty good. If you look at it this way, the movie shows the director's personal style in full. I don't know if the high-level Warner people intervene this movie or not. In the first few minutes, we're introduced to the characters. They are, in my opinion, better and much more memorable. The best for me is still Harley Quinn, who could not be played by anyone other than the wonderful Margot Robbie. As for the new characters, I quite liked King Shark there. Next up are some excellent action scenes, which are unusually frequent for DC. Aside from being frequent, they are really good and Gunn's hand has made his mark on the CGI here, as Weasel like this reminded me slightly of Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy. Where else the change in the director's chair was felt is without a doubt the music, which was really great and I devoured some scenes because they were epic, although I would add that there's not much play on any epicness here. In fact, the film throws in one joke after another. If you found 2016's Suicide Squad too "serious", then I have good news for you because the darker atmosphere has been replaced with a funnier one. To sum it all up. For me, a good film that has rectified the reputation of Suicide Squad and I wouldn't complain at all if there was a sequel that built on this 2021 Suicide Squad and forgot about the 2016 one. I'm not a hater of the older one. In my opinion, it had a darker atmosphere and smaller doses of jokes that I liked about it. But otherwise, the new Suicide Squad offered us much more and I can recommend it. Expand

In the end and after reflecting on it I’d say it does all come together, but I can imagine some viewers feeling like they were put through the paces as even I’m not sure what this movie wanted to be. With it’s very large and excellent cast it felt mostly hindered in the small interactions as there’s something about a James Gunn movie that makes the dialogue feel like dialogue and not coming off as genuine. That’s not always bad with a movie that’s pulled from the pages of a comic and it doesn’t really impede the narrative. You just feel that with the numerous characters so many are under utilized and only on screen as an unnecessary device. That may be because there are so many twists to keep the audience guessing and unaware as to where the story is going, but not everything felt fleshed out. There’s a reoccurring sight gag for a character who describes themself as having mental illness that I just didn’t find funny in the end and I’m still not sure if I’m supposed to. All in all if you have HBO Max and want a dark DC comic movie for a night in, this is pretty good. Just don’t bring the kids. It earned the R rating with constant and gory kills. Expand
