There are definitively pluses and minuses about it: on the plus, the special effects, photography and soundtrack are great, some characters are sufficiently developed, the story makes enough sense. On the minus, the story is a bit messed up, some of the characters could have seen more development (polka dot for example instead of ratcatcher 2), some characters are redundant (Harley, surprisingly), others are "too much" and inconsequent (Starro). The movie is okay-ish. Worth a re-view but nothing more. Still lacks the depth of Guardians for instance but still shows a significant potential. A bit long. Some sequences could have been shortened. Still enjoyable to some extent. Oh, and some gore is unnecessary. Expand

Well everyone the Suicide Squad are back for more suicidal missions and if you thought the first one was mental you ain’t seen nothing yet. Alright, don’t shoot me but I hated The Suicide Squad, it’s bad, very bad, and not even Margot RobbieWell everyone the Suicide Squad are back for more suicidal missions and if you thought the first one was mental you ain’t seen nothing yet. Alright, don’t shoot me but I hated The Suicide Squad, it’s bad, very bad, and not even Margot Robbie is enough to save this mess. Supervillains Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena) etc. are led by Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) to take on a top secret mission on the remote island of Corto Maltese. There’s a whole bunch of new characters whose names you probably shouldn’t try to remember because you just know a lot of them are going to die in some horribly gruesome death, so no spoilers but don’t get attached to anyone.

This is not a sequel but it’s not quite a remake either, there was no way to continue on from the first Suicide Squad so they’ve essentially started again. One of the main issues I had with Suicide Squad was the unnecessary supernatural elements that I couldn’t buy into, witches, Killer Croc etc. I felt this kind of movie would have been better more grounded in reality and I hoped The Suicide Squad would rectify that. Well after the trailer it was obvious that wasn’t happening and they’ve gone even more in the ludicrous direction. I can buy into it for Guardians of the Galaxy but this…seeing King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) chomping his way through this movie like he got lost and wandered off the set of Aquaman just feels so wrong. Sure the CGI and the effects are impressive to look at but that’s not enough. The plot is absolutely bonkers and I don’t mean that as a compliment. Sorry guys, I did not enjoy this. Every single scene is so jam packed with failed jokes it’s tiresome. I’ve never seen a movie try so hard to be funny, almost every line is trying to make you laugh and so many of the jokes just fell flat. It can’t just be me, the cinema I was in wasn’t laughing either. Aside from a few **** it was generally quiet. I can tell you sitting there for 2 hours with so many jokes being thrown at you in a desperate attempt to cause the cinema to erupt into fits of laughter was embarrassing. Yet in an unexpected turn of events the last 10 minutes of The Suicide Squad was the most watchable thing about it. But still, that’s 2 hours you gotta get through first and no matter what I ain’t getting those 2 hours back.

I went to see the first Suicide Squad mainly because of Harley Quinn, and I went to see this for the same reason and you know what Margot fans, you’re better off with Birds of Prey and skip The Suicide Squad. If there’s one positive I can pull from the wreck of this utter mess is that director James Gunn set out to make a movie and the finished product is the movie he wanted, creatively he got what he wanted to make and just because I didn’t like it doesn’t mean others won’t. In fact there is a substantial fanbase already and a slightly suspicious amount of positive critic reviews. But whatever, it is what it is. David Ayer however did not get the same courtesy. Studio interference practically butchered the movie he set out to make and we got an absolute disaster and I don’t believe anyone was actually happy with the first Suicide Squad. I really hope we’ve now gotten to a point where if a film studio hires a specific director for a movie they’ll trust their vision, let them get on with the damn movie and stop interfering. Gunn made the movie he wanted and there’s a lot of fans who enjoyed the hell out of it, I’m not one of them but that’s ok. I’ll get over it. I won’t hold this against James Gunn, despite this experience I’m looking forward to the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie but one thing’s for sure, I never want to see another Suicide Squad movie again, they can make as many as they like but I’m done. Not recommended.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So... Gunn went Rian Johnson's way of subverting expectations and killed almost everyone in first 10 minutes. This movie is more cartoonish than Tom & Jerry. It's bright, gory, trying too hard to be fun and most of the humor comes from voice acting done by Sly. Waller is not herself. It's hard to believe she let her staff live after what they did to her in the final act. Remember, this is the woman who killed everyone expendable during rescue in Ayer's movie. Also, her office now looks like a shelter for homeless. There are no real shockers but the movie is really well cut and the simplicity of the story is it's biggest advantage. Not sure if it's worth watching in theater. Rather a meh than a bang. Expand

I'm sort of torn, because on one hand I like what they did with some of the characters and the banter between them. I think he did well hitting a good tone for the movie and understanding what works about it. On the other hand, everything is so dumb. They don't even try to ground it in reality and it just makes me not care.

I can look past some things, like a talking shark, but I don't understand why it's so hard for hollywood to do a movie like this, but actually put SOME effort into the logic of everything. They are always so lazy and it just makes me not care.

I don't really want to support movies like this, even though I like some stuff, because it will just open the door for more mindless crap from hollywood in the future and I'd rather they were forced to put more actual thought into their movies.

Directed byEVERY time I give a DC film a chance or the benefit of the doubt, I ALWAYS come out regretting it, and this film was certainly no exception, as it managed to outdo the awful and underwhelming first 'Suicide Squad' film as well. Directed by James Gunn (of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' films), what started out in the first half as a somewhat humorous and playful film quickly dived headfirst into absolute mind-numbing CGI/explosion-galore absurdity, shameless gore, and an all-around jumbled and messy story that I couldn't have cared less about. It also REALLY dragged on. With the exception of Margot Robbie and John Cena having their fair share of humorous and scene-stealing moments, EVERYBODY else (yes, even the normally very talented Idris Elba and Viola Davis) were all pitifully wasted. But the worst part? You wanna know what the big main threat is in the second half of this mess of a film? Starfish. A GIANT STARFISH. Yes it's as ridiculous as it sounds. Overall, it's just another shameless, half-assed, and all-around mind-numbing DC film that just continues to remind me why the MCU is consistently better. At least they actually try to come up with decent stories with reasonable premises rather than relying on cheap gore and absolutely absurd premises Expand

Better than I expected, but nothing more than background noise. The Suicide Squad is the perfect mix when you put The Expendables, Guardians of The Galaxy and Deadpool in a blender. The Suicide Squad is the perfect mix when you put The Expendables, Guardians of The Galaxy and Deadpool in a blender. Great action, some funny jokes but mostly 13 years old childish humor, excesive use of time jumping (one is fine, but come on!), perfect casting but Gunn used some character so badly and Waller's resolution was far worse than "Martha moment". Villains had great potential but they were irrelevant for the history, Didn't feel like a real threat in any time.

The most redeemable point of the film is that it feels like a James Gunn movie and the studio let him do whatever sh*t he wanted. Gunn wanted animal cruelty, Warner Bros delivered it. Murder of innocents and children? No problem for Warner. And that's great, because these are bad guys and bad guys do sh*t like that.

I really hope Warner maintains this way of working with the talents in further films.

The Suicide Squad is the best movie of the DCEU? Not even close. Will I watch it again? I doubt it but I wouldn't mind having it as background noise and I can't say the same about WW84, BoP or Josstice League.

I'll start with the reactions I heard - which are obviously not scientific - but seemed that every group watching it were split between liking it and hating it. My wife thought it was the worst CBM she's ever seen.

For me it was pretty enjoyable, but completely over the top on some of the gore and other bits just seemed completely unnecessary. The comedy fell flat for me - Peacemaker in particular was as irritating as a dose of scabies.

All that said - some of the cinematography was amazing, and the effects were superb. Not a dodgy mustache in sight. The ultimate feeling I left with was that while it shared characters from the original SS, it in no way felt connected to the DCEU for me. Maybe the next few movies being released can go some way toward remedying that for me.

Idris Elba and Daniela Melchior were the definite highlights - but I find it baffling that they saw anything in this movie which made them think Peacemaker was deserving of his own series.

Overall - a definite improved on the studio release of Suicide Squad - but nowhere near a DC highpoint in my opinion, and I'm really in no rush to rewatch it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, after seeing the trailer - I really had some hype about watching this movie. I did expect it to be on the level of the first Suicide Squad or even better! But my expectations were not meant to be...

The movie starts with an utmost and unnecessary massacre of quite a lot of well-known characters (such as Captain Boomerang, who was one of my favorite. Blasted after just one throw of his boomerang), and quite in a "brutal" way. It looked like DC tried to fish people into cinemas with these well-known names and then just blow them up while saying "hey, you're watching it already, so no matter"...

And then starts a stupid adventure of the dumbest team ever on a mission "nobody knows what or why" while blasting everyone around like it's just another day. It looks cheap and childish, but with an R

The dumb plot that Flag just suddenly decides to betray his government and his country, even though he has been working for the Suicide Squad Project, is just too damn stupid. Especially with how Peacemaker suddenly goes to stop him... Come on, creating a conflict out of nowhere is....disappointing...

Harley kills out a whole military outpost (that was guarding her) like it's nothing. And I mean it! She didn't get a scratch. But killed almost 30 people in there... DC, Harley is cool yeah...but she is NOT A SUP

And finally, the overall protagonist - the ALLMIGHTY SPACE PATRICK THE STARFISH!

OH. COME. ON Like, the whole crew didn't have a better idea about the final danger/boss?? A giant space starfish, who wants to destroy the whole city? I mean, really...?? How old are your designers/scriptwriters? 10, 12 years old?

An utter disappointment... If I weren't visiting the cinema with my friends and drinking some beer - I would've been really depressed after watching this...

DC, You should start putting some effort in your movies...unless You want to do trash-films....

The entire movie was filled with over the top jokes that almost always fell flat. Idris Elba and Margot Robbie really saved this movie from being a complete disaster. John Cena is painful to watch, and the rest of the characters were OK. There were quite a few scenes where it seems they were told to just improve, and it never worked. There's also no build up or tension in these movies anymore, instead it seems James Gunn is intent on trying to jam in as much content as possible within the 2 hour time block. On the plus side, there was some interesting visual scenes and artistic direction. Unfortunately it was often overshadowed by how intentionally over the top the entire movie was. Expand

Its OK.

It is incredibly flawed, but its OK.

As someone who bleeds DC it really hurt to rate this as low as I did. Its above average but not a revelation.

The comedy is the key strength and it starts off strong in this department but starts to lull and lose steam starting in the last 45 minutes.

The cast is largely OK. This was a major redemption for Robbie as Harley after the solo movie was so rancid.

The majority of the main cast put in decent performances. As expected Elba was good, as was Kinnaman. What they did with Stalone was pleasantly unexpected, albeit it INCREDIBLY derivative of Groot. While she did OK there was entirely too much screen time dedicated for Daniela Melchior as she was only there to humanize these characters which misses the point.

Cena was a poor mans Rock and it really shows. Hes not as bad as the goofy 80s wrestlers when they tried to act but hes for the most part just there. He is intended to be comic relief but being stupid isnt really funny.

That leads into the real problems. The writing is by far the weakest element. Some of the comedy is great, but you really get the feeling that this was Gunn's catharsis of being underneath the thumb of the plague rats standard operating procedures. So of course its pointlessly profane, with excessive nudity both female and male. Adding basically nothing to the end product. Visually its almost uneventful for the source material. All of this amounts to a production that is like a 14 year olds dream flick knowing a 14 year old is not supposed to be the target demographic. Just like Disney super hero movies this incarnation of suicide squad was wrung out of depth and stuffed with tropes instead of exposition. Granted no one comes to a super hero movie expecting Shakespeare, but this should have been better than a contrived and derivative mindless popcorn muncher bomb that lulls you to sleep with how "awesome" it thinks it is.

Honestly I would give this a high D, but its barely passing cause once the comedy runs out halfway through its just a slog to get through the last quarter of the film.

So Ill give it an appropriate 6.9 and yeah honestly rounding down to a 6 because I expected better from DC. This wasnt supposed to be dirty Disney but that is basically what we got and that is not acceptable.

One pro critic said, "too much of nothing and not enuf of something better." Gunn's Guardians movie was not like this, why it's a better effort. This Suicide Squad actually is most resonant with Hardcore Henry (2015), simply known as Hardcore in some countries. This was a failed Russian attempt at movie making as decapitation footage, building demolition footage, snuff video footage, bad traffic accident footage--over and over, until the end.
I do agree with the pro critic who says the best parts of SS are the parts with Margot Robbie; and, this points to how the movie as a whole could have gone.

As music progresses over the decades, these tonal changes appear more and more in modern music to give listeners a novel, unexpected experience. Suicide Squad is what happens when you do too many changes too quickly. With the exception of some weak writing here and there, there are some extremely satisfying scenes in this movie. The problem is that the movie identity is stretched and changed so suddenly from scene to scene that it creates what others have described as "Tonal Confusion." There is one scene late in the movie that is supposed to be heartfelt, but it's so out of place it completely missed it's mark for me. This movie is a mad scientist experiment of sewn together pieces that had some truly great moments, but it stumbled enough in it's transitions (with a few jokes that also fell flat) that I walked away somewhat disappointed. Which is a shame, because I really wanted to love this movie. But... there are a few scenes I keep looking back on and wishing they captured the spirit of the movie as a whole. I hope James Gunn sees enough of these kind of reviews to tweak future projects. Gunn displayed some really cool ideas/scenes that unfortunately, in the end, fell short of being the sum of it's parts. Expand

Lacks depth, a bit too long for its own good and a notable amount of weak humour and unnecessary plot points. Past that, still a fun movie.

There was so much hype and the trailer was so well made that I was expecting this to be something good from DC for a change but unfortunately I was mistaken. Pretty average movie which was full of unnecessary bs

How ever the entire story was just bad. REAL bad. Also we get some pretty good backstory and science into why everyone can do what they can do... but then there is Robbie as Harley Quinn who has no powers, no special abilities, she literally just prances around with a gun or blunt object. Her only possible super power is to infect all her enemies to have the aiming skills of a storm trooper. She literally comes face to face with an assault rifle wielding squad in a hallway and not one can land a shot against her while she stands dead center. Again though this isn't Margot's fault, it is the writing. The more I think of this movie the lower the score I want to give it. Expand

I just felt that this was just reskin of the first movie.
So many of the characters fell like copy and paste from the first movie.
For example, Death shot and Deathstroke are the same. Both are marksmen experts. Both played by a black man.

Lets do this, tell me whats different about them? I Cant think of anything.
Some of the characters are fresh ,but only one was interesting to see (Peacemaker).
The problem with this movie is a lost focus on what i was watching, that never happened with the first movie.

Completely dismisses The Lure of the comics and Source material. It is it own thing. (Doesn't even try to be faithful for what it is base off)
This movie really hates birds.
King shark look like a street shark, and is complete moron, again changing Source material.
The music they used was pretty stale and forgettable.

It has a lot of characters which SHOULD make me feel some sort of emotional attachment towards, but all of their arcs end up being absent, hollow or worse, completely uninteresting and pointless. The central plot is mostly a mess and deals with your typical "end of the world" scenario, but is cheesy and ultimately played for laughs when the reveal is a giant star-shaped alien parasite creature that is easily dispatched by our Anti-heroes.

I think arguably the biggest problem with the movie is that the second act "drop" is terrible and shows how little these characters mesh with each other in-between all the quips and gore-infested jokes. It does in fact attempt to mimic the Marvel formula quite often, but fails to produce the chemistry that those actors and characters actually had. Though it has some interesting moments that even I'll admit are not often subjects ventured into when it comes to these summer action blockbusters, they all end up going nowhere and we're left at a loss when it comes to these clearly flat characters that have about as much going on in terms of depth as the comic book pages they were ripped out of.

James Gunn has been off the rails since "Guardians of The Galaxy 2," and though its a mediocre film.. not bad per se.. its also much worse than his previous Directorial projects. I admit I'm more of a fan of "young" James Gunn and not so much the "I generally tow the line for Disney properties," James Gunn. "The Suicide Squad," does a lot right, but cannot escape that sneaking suspicion that it was again an attempt at bolstering Margot Robbie's career after her terrible solo (trio?) film "Birds of Prey," and the strange amount of screen time she gets with her feet in central focus detract from what the rest of the characters are actually doing there. She also inexplicably escapes of her own accord in a very elongated (for lack of a better word) "Artsy" fashion, which is a huge punch in the face to any character or characters that might've needed some sort of redemption angle or development for themselves.

I feel like the two other leads are just okay, but also staples of action films at this point. I was actually shocked that "Peacemaker" wasn't Dwayne "the rock" Johnson, but John Cena was very vogue for a tiny period of time since his wrestling career halted and his newly appointed position peddling Chinese propaganda was approved. No offense to Idris Elba, but he's in everything and wasn't really noteworthy here. Plus, his whole character is a poke at the "suicide squad's" multitude of similarities and general comic book-y nature, where you literally have duplicate anti-heroes or heroes who are practically carbon copies of the other in terms of powers or abilities. That's something I could've done without, since we already know how silly the film is based on the concept alone. Also their were some rats and a giant shark man thing who had nothing to do for most of the film for some reason. Instead we focus on Joel Kinnaman's character who ends up being one of the few actually solid actors in the film arriving at the secret underground lab, only to uncover that maybe the shady criminal boss of the shady criminal organization that forces incarcerated criminals to do its dirty work.. may be up to something not kosher! What a revelation.

Its all silly fun with lots of cartoony gore, but at its core their is nothing really interesting to revisit about the movie. It didn't do well in theaters and has also garnered quite a lot of hate from the old DC fans that preferred the 2016 version, and now I can kind of see why. At the end of the day they are both worse than the 2014 straight to DVD/ Blu ray "Batman: Assault on Arkham," which for all intents and purposes does a lot better with the source material than either of the live action films.

Idris Alba led the cast and did an incredible job to flesh out his character. John Cena, on the other hand, is rather stiff and one-dimensional, no matter who he portrays, he remains as John Cena the punk wrestler from WWE. Margot Robbie played Harley reminiscent from Batman animated series, though Harley seemed over-powered with the excessive "plot armor".
