Ok this needs to be said.. the real reason this movie is getting low scores is because dudes cannot FATHOM that Lily and Lana are trans and therefore were submitting their low scores the second it was available. GET OVER IT. The movie rocks and Lana rocks and shows her talent yet again.. and for the record, I didn't see a single trans person or metaphor in the movie, maybe I'm missing it, but this movie was about Neo and Trinity first and foremost and they pulled it off!

Great fun film. Highly recommended for any matrix fan.
If you haven't seen the earlier film it would be a hard recommendation.

Why the movie's start is "weird" is explained later on and makes sense within the movie's world. The story continuation makes sense, evolves the world and the characters. The visuals are absolutely top-notch. Don't let people tell you they are not, while they keep watching the umpteenth mediocre marvel movie. The action is great too. And, most importantly, this movie is about emotion and connection, and as a day-one matrix fan, this movie certainly clicked for me in that regard. Sure, there are some silly things I would change, but I'm not going to assume everyone make their movies how I personally want them.
This leads to one of the key problems with many sequels these days. You have hardcore fans, and time. Everyone has their own theory of how this should have been continued, if at all. Personally, I was in luck, as the movie did almost exactly what I had imagined it would need to do and so the story made sense for me. This is a solid 8 from me.

My first fear when I saw this was "please gods just don't let Neo be castrated and all the woman kick all the ass and save the day". Unfortunately, that fully happened. For that alone the move worth a few scores off. Neo did some ass kicking, but there was a clear agenda there that Woman have all the choice, Woman save everything and women are the bestest ever.. I think they should have added Neo a bit more agency. The fact that he was not able to get it up (the sky, when he was trying to fly) was showing everything about his character in this film..
Regarding the Ani-Neo, Smith - Well, I think that's also a botched effort, the first films were in equilibrium, Neo had Smith in strength equalling their own, here it just felt empty. "The Smith-Morpheus hybrid" was not really a great choice especially since they had a separate "Smith", who was there only to deus ex machina the failure situations and then left.. This would be a great opportunity to introduce a female antagonist to the story to keep a balance, if they made Trinity the new Neo, they should make a new female Smith or similar also. But I guess, it's 2021, you cannot have a female portrayed anything less than perfect nowadays, let alone be an antagonist.. The fight scenes I felt were pretty forgettable. I still remember when Neo was fighting 100 agents, or when they fought in the subway, with great detail, but for some reason none of the fight scenes in this move were memorable at all. I cannot recall a single instance of a fight scene that was "organic", or got enough focus. Fight scenes felt that they happened in their mandated time, and they sort of tried to make every fight a grouphug. Lot of people fighting a lot of people, mostly in places which are not really meant for fighting.. This was especially obvious with the Merovingian fight with the rainbow brigade.. Unmemorable, chaotic, and ultimately pointless, The Merovingian's character was a pointless callback with no substance, just to have a fight scene.. Like at the end in the coffee shop.. Neo's fight scenes were felt like he was bullied auntil he had a nerd rage. Not really though through, just sort of like "Ehh I don't like fighting at all, but ok let's fight" All in all I enjoyed the movie more than I have not, I liked how they painted the line between video games and the Matrix. The cooperation between machines and men are natural and was not bad at all. CGI was better than expected. Regarding design of characters, Eh.. Seen better.. I know you cannot go around the SJW aesthetic, still it was quite bad in some places (there was one character who's hair was soo ugly, I was like uhh.. You can have any hairstyle in the world, and you went with THAT??)
The character of Morpheus was coming out as worst I think of all, felt like he was having too much fun with it, it wasn't as serious as the original (or not even as close to the rigid Smith)
I want to give props to editing and cuts that were comebacks to the original films, sometimes mid sentence, that was executed well, but I must say the callbacks to the original movie was almost too much.. Almost.. I need to think about the movie a bit more, but I fear every time I do, the score will go down more. I guess we all should just say thanks that it was not more agenda fuelled than what it already was or what most people expected..

I like this movie, it definitely worth to watch. Well balanced irony, humor, action and finally the ideas. It delicately reference the previous ones, and on a contrary it gives a feeling that the Matrix Universe has evolved. Good job!

After the Halloween retro, the Bill and Ted retro, and gods know how many other retros we get we now have the Matrix retro, clearly made since Reeves is now a hot commodity thanks to his good-guy media persona and John Wick. I enjoyed the nostalgia and the Analysis is interesting; though it might have been the Architect. It was good to be back in the world again and the music poured into my veins. However, Smith was under utilized and the pacing dragged. Overall was glad to see where the story went after 3. Thought it was a better retro than I have seen but no hold on the past 3. Expand

And I think that afterBeyond my expectations as a massive fan, I see this film as a very late coda to the saga for reasons that Lana Wachowski herself has expressed and that have to do with her grief and loss over the death of her parents. And I think that after all these years, she wanted to give her most iconic characters an ending that could be called happy.
Even without the involvement of her sister Lili Wachowski.

It abuses of its metafiction plot quite a bit, and the excellent fight sequences are completely absent, but that has a lot to do with its own meta-assimilation that permeates all its elements, so it's part of the process, especially since at least I wasn't expecting more of the same from the trilogy, and the trailers had made it clear that that wasn't the main goal of this new adventure.

The social and philosophical critique isn't really clever, but at least it provokes the plot to be aware of itself as the final realization that humanity prefers the facade of the Matrix, although ultimately, it doesn't really contribute to anything transcendental or emblematic like the original film. And that's to be expected.

The Matrix Resurrections is the film I expected it to be. An unnecessary addition perhaps, but I don't see it as a throwaway.
It could have been much, much worse, and that doesn't exempt it from anything, but to say I was bored or disappointed is not in my vocabulary when it comes to this story.

For a night out at the movies, it's no worse than most of the garbage put out in 2020 and 2021, with the exception of 'Spiderman,' but if you're expecting anything akin to the original Matrix, you're sh*t outta luck. The entire first hour of the film was a wink and nod to the original Matrix, with flashbacks etc... and it played like an episode of a TV series doing a season recap, rather than a serious sequel. Did I hate it, no, but I would never watch it again. Expand

For the rest of us hardcore fans, we get to enjoy a movie that explains what happened, while calling back to the old trilogy, and setting up a dazzling future. As long as the plebs don't ruin the chances of future Matrix movies, the set-up is looking brilliant. The action, the story, the implications of it all, it's all so exciting when you think about it. Where it started, and where things can go now. There are so many new possibilities now. Bottom line... If you're just a casual viewer, and you're not totally invested in the story - you won't get it. You won't enjoy it much. But if you're up on the original trilogy, its storylines, its philosophies then you'll see so many enjoyable things. But you have to be UP on everything. The original trilogy, and the relevant stories from The Animatrix. Don't let the plebs with the low-score reviews make your decision for you. They were clearly never invested anyways. It's painful seeing people leave low-scores on a movie series they never paid attention to anyways... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first half of the Movie is really great, and they did actually the impossible to create something new and unexpected here. Afterwards, you get introduced to a lot of new characters, who don't bring much personality to the table, that would somehow affect the plot, and only kind of do their jobs. And since you can't really care about them, all the action scenes fall flat, and seem kind of noisy, not having much impact or meaning to them, besides of serving as action sequences. Some parts seem very hastily done, like Neo getting imprisoned and freed a few seconds later, when they could have told him spending weeks there in a minute of screentime, a missed oppertunity to explore how (differently here) he would deal with it. I guess it's just lazy writing, as well as the finale, where trinity and neo just duck off, leaving their companions for dead. Anyhow, if the matrix was an important movie to you, you will enjoy this one as well, and it's easy to forgive the movie some sloppyness. What i really don't get is though, how the free people live under an authoritarian military rule. I mean, couldn't the moviemakers imagine something more uplifting, than saying that the next best alternative to what we have now would be actually worse, politically. This way the movie seems more like a threat than allowing you to think something else somehow... Expand

The first half-hour is almost promising, with them re-framing the previous trilogy in an interesting way, but soon we find out it's essentially an inferior remake masquerading as a sequel. The acting is poor, the script tries to be profound occasionally, but it's running on an empty, spent tank. The fight scenes are janky and stiff, and the CGI is good, but who cares when the fights are so clumsy? There's really nothing here but a steaming pile of WHY DID THIS GET MADE?

And the final scene has the AUDACITY to think they can launch a series of this crap.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So after watching this and thinking about it for a while I am still not sure if it's a movie with a lot of meta pretentiousness in it, or is it pretentiously meta... or is it both?
It was enjoyable enough to watch in the latter half and there are overall some great ideas at play but certainly I spent most of the first half wondering just when the characters were going to go full on do a 4th wall break.
And while the remaining Wachowski can competently deliver a movie, having so many fan service "greatest hits" moments (very much like GB:A) actually makes the movie feel like a tired retread of old ideas in a fan fiction then a new canonical work. Acting overall was pretty good with NPH almost outright stealing the movie. The "twist" was predictable given the source and undermines the previous movies somewhat. Overall this falls somewhere between returns and revolutions so the 3rd best in the franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Matrix....delivered as a student movie.

The beginning was thrilling, the initial thrill of here we are, again, back in The Matrix, we are experiencing a loop the Matrix rebuilding itself and the cycle repeating...the suddenly...wtf is that haircut on the kid? They are fans?? Ewwww.
O.K. the situation is changing. Hmmmm.

The premise surprised me, but it did grow on me in the first act as we see Keanu as a game designer, and the struggle between his 'real' memories and the fiction of the world he 'created'. The flashbacks were working, I felt intrigued. This is the strongest element of the new film. The concept and rescue of Trinity is a solid idea. It pains me to say they couldn't follow through.

The Annalist was a good choice...but only for a bit part; The 'new' Smith is a disaster. I felt he was completely non threatening and totally unconvincing. The lack of a genuinely threatening 'bad guy' completely pulled me out of the film every time the characters of Smith and the Annalist were on screen. Horrible casting (sorry/not sorry guys), and badly written.

The horrible section with the Merovingian was truly, utterly, devastatingly bad. The action scenes were poorly executed (although Keanu moves well) the feeling was this was produced by Uni students using The Matrix style as inspiration and having got the cast stoned enough decided to shoot a scene.

The return of Trinity was exhilarating, but her rescue...which should have been the sole focus of the film was so badly done. Show, don't tell! We had to endure horrid exposition cut up with scenes of what was being described, in what should have been the focal point of the whole film; an exhilarating, risky attempt to rescue Trinity in the 'real' world.

The experience, as a huge fan of the originals, gets a barely pass mark. Neo and Trinity re-united for a Happy Ending could have worked. But it feels like the film was miscast, lacked any real threat, and didn't go deep enough. It looks like it was shot for TV, and the whole zombie hoard 'swarm' vibe was still born.

The story itself was good. I can see why they wanted to tell it. It could have worked with better attention to the writing; ultimately this is NOT the matrix we were looking for...it's a pale facsimile, a low resolution copy in an era of High definition I-Max blockbusters.

I give it a 6 purely for seeing Neo and trinity on screen.

The Matrix Resurrections feels like a Matrix movie for a new generation, with the story elements of the first two films. i understand that the point of the Matrix itself is to be a cycle but do they have to follow most of the same beats?

i don't dislike the movie, i just thought it would offer more because of the new concepts they introduced but then i took a step back and realized that most of the things they introduced were just a setup for sequels and possibly spin offs. i do want to see more of the Matrix franchise but i felt this was just kind of disappointing, to long and just a little boring and bland. i like this film but i was hoping for more. the acting was pretty bad and the characters from the previous franchise were either underused or just poorly written and the new villains were all bad, but that's just my opinion. i think the franchise should be handed off to new hands to see what new writers and directors can do with it. maybe a new group of creators can bring new life to the franchise.

p.s. the Visual Effects were better than I thought they were going to be and i really want to see more of the new characters because they were the most interesting thing in this film. ↓ point rating ↓

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd say this film is on par with Revolutions. I enjoyed the chemistry between the actors and the emphasis placed on the power of relationship. However, there are definitely some things that bugged me. Some of the new characters felted bland and lacked much of the chemistry I spoke of earlier. The "new and improved" Agent Smith was a no go for me, and I disliked the attempts at humor. All in all, a good movie but don't expect something as good as the original or Reloaded. Expand

It feels almost in a way like a reboot with a modern-day spin to it. It feels more light-hearted, especially with Neil Patrick-Harris' character. I definitely want to give it a second watch.

However, I think if you're a "woke"-hating, older conservative you should probably give this movie a pass because it will trigger you with things like females taking leadership roles that classically belonged to men as well as youth-centric culture and lingo. If you cringe at terms like "lol", aren't interested in things like video games or the inclusion of minorities then you should probably do yourself a favor and pretend like this movie never happened because you will very likely get upset from watching this.

I was promised a terrible woke sequel, but the bad guys are still the Communists (machines) and taking the red pill still wakes you up.

The story is cringe at times, but it's still a somewhat enjoyable action film. Set sixty years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions, the film follows our hero Neo, who is now living a somewhat normal life as Thomas Anderson in San Francisco as a Game Developer, and creator of The Matrix video games, (insert major cringe at this point with terrible 4th wall breaking dialog). Anderson is seeing a therapist and describes a psychosis of him believing The Matrix is real, after a while a new version of Morpheus offers him the red pill and reopens his mind to the world of the Matrix.

Neo joins a group of rebels and we have pretty much the same old story being told again.

Not only is there a new Morpheus, there is also a new Agent Smith, the problem here is that they have just recast old characters, and the original actors were so iconic in their roles, that this instantly seems alike a huge let down.

The Good

It is still the tale of good vs evil, the common man versus the elite, the special effects are incredible as you would expect.

The Bad

The film is not great, it is also not terrible

Overall

The promises of "reclaiming the red pill" narrative doesn't really materialise, the film is not overly woke, the problem is the film is just not that good. But that is because of the very high standard of the original.

I score the film a super generous 7/10 mainly as I am a huge Matrix fan. Could've and should've been better. We are literally living in a world right now that the original film fantasized about, but the film makers were too cowardly to take head on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed the movie a lot. There is a lot of self-referential/meta-humour in the first third of the movie but it works well in my opinion, I don't think it is distracting or annoying and it also makes sense within the plot of the movie.

Since we already understand the matrix going into the movie, the bending of reality can be turned up a notch without confusing the viewer and I found that they made good use of that in the first act to still keep us guessing about what is "really" happening in the Matrix or what are superstitions within Neo's mind within the Matrix (so second-degree simulations, I guess).

Dialogue and in-universe concepts are multi-layered in a good way, many lines and aspects of the world are clearly social commentary not so coded that one would miss it but also not so blatant that they would be immersion-breaking.

Of course, there are some holes in the plot and some plot points are at least unclear. But none of that is totally unexplainable and so big that it would have taken me out of the experience. Some of the exposition is a little vague and some doesn't go anywhere.

The movie has action and violent conflict but they are not the focus. The focus is clearly the experience of the main characters, Neo and Trinity, within a system that tries to control them and their decisions. At no point was my main concern whether Neo or Trinity were about to be hit by a stray bullet. That might make the action scenes less exciting but if the action had been the focus of this new Matrix movie I would have been disappointed.

Matrix resurrections had to walk a fine line to deliver something special. It had to create something distilled and essential, while large in scope. While Matrix 2 & 3 couldn't accomplish this, Matrix 4 does it effortlessly .

Matrix 4 manages to inject a fresh eyed view of the universe and put the focus back on the relationship between Neo and Trinity. I think the only issues with the movie is the beginning. The lighting on Keanu and Carrie-Anne when they meet lacks dimension, almost like a soap opera on tv. Given the opportunity the director has here to show the meetup of an iconic pairing, I think this subconsciously feels disappointing, but it’s only a few scenes in the beginning. Also, movie clips from the first movies are shown, multiple times. This does not feel great, it’s very self aware and almost feels cheap a few times. But none of those are major roadblocks.

Matrix 4 succeeds in sucking you back in, making you actually care about the universe it created. 2 and 3 felt drawn out, but 4 is unique, exciting, fresh, and bold. It crafts a script that explains the details of the first 3, answering what happened in our time away and what that means. And it does it while making a great movie.

Not bad for a movie done during covid, but thats not saying much. It seems the whole budget was spent on cgi, there was really only one, short, fight scene near the begining of the movie so it does not seem that any martial arts specialists were consulted in this film to choreography anything, lots of cgi bullets though and explosions. Also, no drama, no one dies not even a single program so this is like a super campy version of the matrix however i am still holding out for a good movie from Keanu in John Wick 4.

The story focusing on Neo and Trinity is a great one. It really pulled on the feels at times. I know this movie has been trashed by people and I will say that if you are looking for mindless gun violence then this is not the film for you. It does contain spectacular action sequences and they are a joy to watch. But it’s the story and deeper meaning of things that win out here, just as in the originals. The movie feels like a genuine continuation of the series. He new characters are great as well. I liked all of them and they all really have a positive impact on the film. There’s plenty of discussion about their situations, but this franchise is more about visuals and this one delivers. Director Lana Wachowski has masterfully created dazzling worlds and cool effects, all gorgeously framed and lit. Even though the dialogue sometimes drags, the performances are engaging. To top it off are the incredible action scenes; wild fights and insane stunts, all with breathless editing. Fans will appreciate the continual showdown between the realities, but everyone can enjoy the cinematic eye candy. As a result, it really needs to be seen on the big screen for full effect. And it obscures some of its better commentary in smatterings of techno-babble. Nevertheless, it offers up a number of excellent twists on the theme, including one big one that would have been excellent to see in the first film. Perhaps the world wasn't ready back then for action films with big ideas. Regardless, it is now and this Matrix tries and often succeeds in delivering an action-thriller which cares as much about its ideas as its set pieces and fight sequences. And, if some of its bolder messages -- like questioning the necessity and value of neverending war -- are an awkward fit for a film that revels in so many explosions, it pokes enough fun at itself (and the Matrix universe in general) to get away with it. Audience disagreement could be seen as part of the overall joke; as in, "Did you really choose to like or dislike the Matrix, or was that just your programming?" Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a huge fan of the matrix Trilogy... I literally consumed my first collection that included the Animatrix along with plenty of extra footage on how Keanu and all the others trained so hard...

Now... That was the past. And what do we get here? A bunch of online keyboard lions crying that woke colture has once again destroyed something that we grew to love during our younger years... Like it happened to Ghostbusters and Star Wars.
Why?

And I'm gonna get deeper into this: the union between Neo and Trinity was what always made things work, even in the past.

You think that now she has been changed and is a woke character? So it was fine when she gave Neo a kiss of life? What about Trinity busting Agents' asses on that highway to secure an asset and all the other stuff she did? She's a badass and always was.
And when they died, as it said in the movie, Neo and Trinity's source codes combined. Which was what could bring energy to this new machines faction that want to reopen the fields for growing humans... But instead, with just those two, that they saved from death, it would be sufficient. Why? Because they are BOTH THE ONE now.

The only problem is that a mind that was already freed tries to break the illusion again... And while the coding for this altered Matrix was being done it's damn obvious that part of Neo went into Trinity...

In short, what the flying **** are you all complaining about! It's freaking amazing and perfectly working in the Matrix lore! Trinity was always a badass, Neo was the superman of Matrix, now we have two Chosen Ones born from their feelings for each other, through death and time!

Bring it on! I loved all of this. And I hate gratuitous wokeness. This movie had none.

Most of these idiots with multiple accounts downvoting this movie to oblivion probably didn't even realize that Smith, The Merv and all the others were just bots created within the simulation and not the real programs from the past.

Here's my 10 to you, Keanu, still my favorite of all time. To you, Carrie-Anne, for being the best badass EVER (probably along with Ripley from the Alien movie series)... It's a masterpiece, worthy of the name Matrix.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The bad reviews here are from people stuck in their own Matrix in their own head. It’s actually genius how this film used the opportunity of yet-another-fricking-Hollywood-sequel to comment on WHY those things are happening, why these things make the money, why our modern culture builds these echo chambers that trap us in our own comforting illusions. Sadly, despite the film trying it’s best to do all this within a clever re-imagining of an upgraded Matrix world, it seems many people are just not able to get it at all. Instead they get straight back to being outraged in their own little matrix of socials like Metacritic. Well done, Wachowski and crew! You had a seemingly impossible mission and you did a great job. You even explicitly spelled out what you were doing in the film and still folks are missing it. Which just proves your point. Expand

It was unexpected, had some very nice fresh elements, and the writing was actually solid in parts (in other parts it was terrible). It engaged my imagination, and that's all I would have asked for.

I'm sad that they didn't bring the OG Morpheous (Fishburne) back as he's one of my absolute favourite actors, and let's face it, if he's going to be playing as a video game character why not make him into a young rendered Fishburne character? It would have made sense.

I also didn't like some of the fan-pandering and nostalgia-mongering but thankfully this is overshadowed by some great cinematography and thoughtful plot points.

The first half of the movie is actually kind of excellent, and I'm not at all bothered by the lack of good action scenes as we get enough of those from just about every other movie that comes out.

It probably won't age that well, but it's better than Reloaded, easily.

It's more about female agency than male agency. Lots of males will hate that. Matrix 4 was a thankless task from the beginning, as Lana W. has said and has Thomas Anderson say in the film. Two other films may help the confused relate to this Matrix reboot better. One is Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation (2002) where breaking the fourth wall between fiction and the viewer's expectations is much of the foreground of the narrative, spectacularly in the third act. The other is Johnathan Mostow's Terminator 3 (2003) where another director publicly lamented his task: following up and improving on Terminator 2. In this context of movies about making movies, I liked Matrix 4 better than I thought I would. I appreciated Reeves' understated presence. I liked teh moments of clarity and insight framing the issue of sheeple-followers vs. independent and critical thinking (waking up). What might have improved this and made it more coherent is more awareness of and attention to two memes: Healthy democratic socialism as alternative to corporate consumerism neo-feudalism; and, Cultural Creative/Divine Feminine rhetoric. Both these themes haunt the fringes of the film as these really are the likely ways forward culturally and for which new leaders are needed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Remove the faux philosophy of Reloaded and Revolutions, and throw in a dash of scathing real-world commentary, equally targeted at the studio machine and at the frothing audiences that demanded its existence, and you get The Matrix: Resurrections. I guess it's arguable whether this film is 'canon Matrix' or an experiment in using an existing film franchise to make a statement about the nature of impractical and unneeded sequels to completed stories. There's a very clear subtext in the film that Warner Bros strong-armed the Wachowskis into making a Matrix sequel and told them if they didn't do it, they'd do it without them (and we've all seen how that turned out for George Lucas). To me this is a much more clever and cutting Matrix than the last two that is more focused on present-day societal problems and how we interface with media. It's extremely metatextual, and takes critical swipes at large portions of its own audience. Some will love it, some will hate it. Personally, I found it refreshing and about time some creator with clout said something about what the endless fart stream of unnecessary sequels is doing to the movie industry and to people's minds. There was also a handy parallel between the film's Matrix and today's internet and how it makes people act and think.

There are fresh new concepts like some magnetic nanoparticles that allow programs to take a physical form in the real world (cool!), and not ALL the machines are evil, which paves the way for interesting human-machine relations. I liked all the new characters and loved that Agent Smith was portrayed by a different actor this time. I personally like that they didn't bring back the entire old cast because I'm getting sick of seeing all my childhood heroes grow old, unflattering and fat, as is done in many other film rehashes. If I want to see Hugo Weaving's deft performance as Smith I need only to boot up any of the original three films. Watching it again for the member berries would have done nothing for me, so it felt nice to change it up. They kept the primary actors/characters, wrote some out, and reimagined others. The new characters were more fresh and enjoyable than many of the trilogy's original side characters, though they're no more or less throwaways overall than your average film side characters. I feel as if many people haven't seen the original trilogy lately and are looking back at those films through rose-colored glasses. Aside from the first film, they aren't as good as anyone remembers. The fights in them aren't all as good as people remember, either, and the new ones in this film are on par. I think it goes over people's heads that the "Morpheus" in this film is not actually Morpheus, but a program Neo created for his video game from his vague memories of Morpheus and with dashes of Agent Smith thrown in. It's a new character who is simply named after Morpheus. The actor did a very good job playing a character that was a bit of a mashup of Smith and Morpheus (the fusion of their personalities was fun) and I enjoyed him a lot. Bugs is the show-stealer of the new crew, however, because unlike many characters in this series she blunders more often and has a bit more of a novice edge, making her seem actually vulnerable and enhancing the dramatic tension of fight scenes. I liked her charm and humor, and that the film overall had more wit and humor, not as over-serious as its predecessors. NPH is a great villain.

At the core of the story is really just a heartfelt romance between Trinity and Neo. It ended with flashes of Magnolia and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and I wasn't sure where it was going to land, but was happy with it ending less bleak than the last one. As for claims that the film is woke, I didn't see it. The messages and humor take jabs at all sorts of groups and felt nonpartisan overall. There's a subtle jab at MAGA that might trigger you if you're balls-deep invested in the MAGA slogan, but there are as many parodies of snarky liberal hipsters, so I don't really see the big deal. The cast of the film is full of lots of women, many races, and a handful of gays, but it's never politicized. Any "feminist" moments in the film are pretty practical ones I think any rational person could get behind (e.g. don't judge me unfairly just b/c I'm a woman), not the horribly artificial gender tiffs and male-character-bashing of films like The Last Jedi. I'm sure this will result in many downvotes, but I think there are two reasons this film is getting lambasted.
1) It should never have existed, and rather than the creators simply folding to audience/studio demands to make it or watch someone else make it (and potentially ruin the trilogy's legacy) they wrote a film that directly addressed the issue.
2) This went over people's heads, or they simply don't like that the creators decided to do that instead of just trying to churn out some needless sequel.

Resurrections isn’t as entertaining without Fishburne or Weaving. It is however at least more like the first film than Reloaded and Revolutions. It is trippy and has the Wonderland like references that made the first good. It just takes longer than it should to get started.
It also doesn’t exactly know how to be as exciting as the original. Though, I would still call it the second best. Since I was not as disappointed in it as I was with the first two sequels. Especially Revolutions, which lacked any Kung-Fu.
My biggest complaint though is that if you are going to get new actors to play Morpheus and Smith. At least get ones that don’t feel like they are Hallmark channel actors.
Neil Patrick Harris and Jessica Henwick are the best new additions, easily. The movie in the end though is still pretty much just the 1999 film again. With the same story of finding yourself and it also asks “what is reality ?”

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I do understand all the hate this movie is getting. It feels almost as it it wasnt a Matrix movie, but if you see the whole picture, since Matrix 1 the movies focused on the relationship between Neo and Trinity and how life both in reality and inside the Matrix kept punishing them for being together (almost like Butterfly Effect), the movies also showed how this love surpassed all boundaries for as grim as they might look (Neo refusing to back into the souce, removing the bullet that hit Trinity on Matrix 2). So looking at this, you could see where the directors where going, love can win over anything, and I think in this movie they reassured that, and lets be honest Neo ending up with Trinity is a whole lot more happier than him being seen as a mere sacrifice for humanity's peace. I give it a 7 because it felt like they tried to fit 2 movies in 1, almost like other comments said happen on Game of Thrones, so if movies/series have something to learn from this is not to rush things, take your time, its better to deliver quality over timing. I would have waited 2 more years for this movie and it would have been at least a solid 9.
Thanks for reading.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Meet the new improved NEO!!!

Well kind of; he can't fight, he can't use any powers and is no longer the hero. He can stop bullets; which he does over and over again and a completey useless punch. By the end, you are hoping one of the bullet scenes loops takes him out to end both his misery and the audience. By the end he is completely subservient to trinity; apparently she was the hero entire time. Not forced at all; made complete sense (sigh).

All the scenes are utter rubbish; jumble story that is forced and looks like a college class production. Something about humans and love conquers all with just terrible plot points that go nowhere. Acting and directing at all time low. The opening scene is just terrible and jumbled; it's like they shot everything in a 20ftx20ft set only.

The good:
+1 star - for any scene with neil patrick harris, he really did a great job and any of his scenes were well done. Made a terrific "bad guy". Unfortunately that is about 15mins of movie.

Some nostalgia and cut backs to old movies; probably best parts.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I like the attempt at a super meta sequel, but it falls flat. Kind of wish the film had continued on with the first half premise and done away with the return to reality/rescue trinity part. Could have been interested to just have a whole film where its Keanu trying to figure out what's real and then maybe just at the end bring some actual doubt of reality into things. Might have left things open for an 5th film. Expand

An incredibly cynical look back at the last 20 years or so. Not just of the Matrix, but society and how film and technology has been affected as well. The film is so cynical, intentionally so, that it inevitably goes over casual audiences.

So let's be clear it was ok as in average. Not good or bad. Just meh. For fans of keanu Reeves and the matrix enjoyable at times. At times.

The cgi is poor and the sound and music forgettable. The action scenes are bland and confusing. The story is very messy but with interesting ideas poorly executed. The acting was good but only in that they all tried their best but didn't have much to do. Keanu and Carrie look great as older people which is nice (for them). Laurence Fishboner doesnt return because Lana doesnt like him but that scientology nut returns...Will Smiths wife and she's quite good. Hugo Weaving was meant to be in M4 but also had a falling out with Lana so his part is played by that chap from Mindhunter. The problem with this is Hugo is meant to be part of a story twist but they forget to make changes to accomdate the new actor swap so the twist falls flat leaving audiences confused.

But it's a very odd film and not what you expect. A middle age love story in some ways. The ending is surprisingly romantic. But the two have no chemistry or even less than they had before but I get the feeling they respect each other which is nice. Though trinity is the new lead but she doesn't have one scene without keanu which seems odd. For a film about female empowerment the latter is contrary to that theme. The problem is...I believe Warners were going to make this film. Without Lana and Lilly (who co made 1-3). And (now) sister Lilly, wisely said 'no I've done that and dont wish to return'. So Lana made this film I believe partly out of spite. She is on record saying she 'didn't want to make it but she did under duress' clearly to stop others from tampering with some thing so personal to her and her transition / life journey. And honestly ...this is very prevalent in much of the writing... especially in the middle. They literally do a meta parody naming Warners and stating they are forcing Keanu (Lana) to make matrix 4 (video game) and he (she) says I don't want to and they insist so keanu (lana) considers suicide. I mean that's some fudged up ship. Then keanu (lana) says I feel i put too much of myself in the games (films). So this entire film is kind of a middle finger to the studio and sadly it's to the films detriment. It could have been cleverly interwoven into the matrixverse but instead it's likely intentionally blunt with a possible wish to kill the franchise. I feel the fans deserved more but who really cares as we can watch the first 3 any time we like.

So when...if ...you watch 'The Matrix 23: ReReLoadedRevolutionsRenovations' maybe consider all this and you'll have an easier time understanding what the hell is going on. But you'll still be confused as much of it is a confusing mess....But possibly this is the one time in a film that the mess is intentional. A mixed bad 5/10 better than I thought it be

I know some took it as..." we better get behind this one or the Fembusters will win the argument"... but it was not that good ...a 10 compare to the fembusters ...but not a jewel... and this movie is definitely not the bad movie they are making out to be. ...I will give this one a 7/10. Total waste of 2.5 valuable hours of your time for pointless dialogues and offline plot
Worst of all, Keeanu Reaves doesn't even want to look-talk-kiss his co-star Carrie-Anne Moss's old lover-eternal mistress, and this is evident throughout the film whenever he is close to her.
Keanu probably doesn't believe in anything of his acting and you can see it (there is clear evidence about it) just take a closer look at the official poster of the movie, where he proposes his hand forward rather to say to all of you, no do not see this movie, I was paid and that is enough, do not waste your time my dear fans. Garbage fantasy follows.
A more honest title for the film would be "Fartrix", hand proposed, it's comimg out, hold your breath.

This movie is nowhere near as bad as they say. In fact, you get the same goose bumps as in the previous movies.

My problem is that the movie wanted "too much to tell", so you get the feeling that things are happening too fast. It is obvious that it needed to split to another 3 sequels instead of just one.

The other problem is that the action scenes are downgraded compared to the former movies, and yes, the characters of Morpheus and Mr. Smith aren't hit that hard as before (bad actor choices).

But regardless of these, this movie is just as unique as the former Matrix movies. I'm unable to grasp all these negative reviews. Maybe the problem is that this movie requires you to think a little bit more, which seems to be impossible for most of the people.

At least it felt somewhat like a Matrix film in concept but not visually. I don’t mean the visuals are bad. The visual effects look good and so does the cinematography but it’s missing that iconic green tint. This is obviously a minor issue but it impacts the film a lot. The green tint is iconic to the trilogy and it not being here makes the film feel like it’s lacking something. A lot of this film feels like it’s lacking. The story is really weak and contrived and it’s meta commentary is awful. It’s possible to do meta commentary on your own films/genre right, look to the Scream films for that, but it’s awful here. They make fun of the tropes but then do the exact same thing without a hint of irony. It feels like they forgot there was meta commentary to this film. It’s my biggest issue with this film and it really drags it down. Some of the action doesn’t necessarily suck but it isn’t great either. It’s hard to tell what is going on and it’s filmed in such a bland way. The performances are fine. Keanu Reeves is being Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss is fine. Neil Patrick Harris and Jonathan Groff are standouts but I take issue with their characters. Groff plays Hugo Weaving’s role from the original films but he just kinda starts being Agent Smith. There isn’t any build up prior and he just becomes him. The issue I have with Neil Patrick Harris’s character is due to his presentation on screen. They lower the frame rate whenever he is on screen and it looks awful. They lower the frame rate a lot in this movie and it never looks good. This film really didn’t need to have been made but at least it has some sort of message which is more than I can say for Revolutions. I probably would recommend passing on this movie and just watching the original again. Expand

Nobody expected anything good in the plot department here - after all, even the 2nd Matrix was good only in action and visuals. But this time they've totally failed even in the technical department. No style, no visuals, mediocre and boring action scenes, bad choreography, mediocre operator work. Special effects are bland, sometimes horrendous, especially when they show robots up close. And we're comparing movies with 18 years of difference.
On top of that, the new actors are all dull. Lame new Morfeus, lame new Smith, lame Merovingian, lame and boring new main heroine and hew crew. Barney Stinson seems like the only good new addition, but he can't carry this trainwreck.
The whole movie feels like a parody - check this out, we can do similar scenes as in the first movie, but worse. Well, good for you, but why don't I just go and watch the first movie then?
And if you ironize about bad unnecessary sequels, it doesn't excuse when you make one yourself.

While the first film was an anarcho-socialist manifesto and an allegory for capitalism's use of cultural constructs like gender (and race and sexuality: there's a reason all of the bad guys are *White* men - when they don't appear as literal machines - fighting a multi-racial, queer-coded group of good-guy revolutionaries) to control the masses, as flippantly described in throwaway lines here during an early montage set to Jefferson [Flying-Machine]'s "White Rabbit," this is a film about what has become of the film industry (and video games to some extent, though the gaming commentary is more about the culture and "gamers" as a population) and the sociopolitical implications of the Death of The Author concept as it relates to The Matrix specifically, which - rather unexpectedly for an ultra-leftist transgender manifesto - has been misappropriated by a vicious Right-wing fanbase that may in fact constitute a majority of its fans (though this can also apply to franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars, which have overt socialist utopian and anti-imperialist messages, respectively, that one hell of a lot of their fans somehow managed to ignore).

The commentary is far less subtle (and less esoteric - no need for a Classics or Medieval History minor to understand the references here) as a result; for example, the context for the production of the film itself is explicitly described as part of a film-within-a-film (well, game-within-) discussion, right down to naming the actual publisher. We still get some broader discussion of the Plato's Cave nature of reality, and there IS a central philosophical theme*, but unlike the original film, it's primarily in service of criticism of media corporations (especially interactive art as a monetized Skinner box), tech bros, the normative bias of the mental health industry, fandom (especially entitled obsessives and the manosphere, which I can all but guarantee is why Bugs has dyed hair; search "manosphere dyed hair" if you're blissfully ignorant of their bizarre fixation), and the broad fascist resurgence of the post-2001 era (I suspect that Lana has read Bob Altmeyer's The Authoritarians, given some of Neil Patrick Harris's lines).

So those going in looking for post-apocalyptic sci-fi, a beat-em-up action thriller, a monomyth arc, or even a love story are bound to be disappointed. Intentionally so. The plot is haphazard and shallow (think video game fetch quests); the character motivations are similar (literally fan worship or being a programmed algorithm; the latter, again explicitly discussed in dialog, is a metatextual reminder that you're watching actors following a script); the fight scenes are lackluster, often framed without a sense of real threat or consequence and cut so the action is difficult to follow; and discussions of the history of the dystopian "real world" - and shots of it - are short and perfunctory. Essentially, this film takes all of the elements that fans of the previous films might have latched onto while ignoring the core political message and dials them way back or eliminates them entirely; the result is more likely to appeal to fans of The Guild than, say, Joe Rogan.

The execution isn't perfect, but it does what it intends, entertainingly. If you like metafiction and hate a large portion of The Matrix's fanbase - and post-industrial capitalism - as much as Lana Wachowski does, you may well enjoy this film. If you don't, you'll almost certainly react like the commenters describing it as "woke trash" - somehow missing the extensive in-your-face use of the same waking up metaphor that informed *that* phrase in the original film, including the use of RATM's "Wake Up" as closing music (a cover of which closes out this film as a final callback and middle finger to fans who hate that a sequel isn't simply the original work).

*There is a consistent philosophical theme throughout the film: a discussion of human brains as algorithm processors - not altogether different from computer programs - the loops on which we operate, and how the systems of control that are the main focus of the previous films are constructed from these loops. It's not groundbreaking - most of The Matrix's philosophy is hundreds to thousands of years old - and was explicitly discussed in similar terms in, for example, Mr. Robot (appropriately so, as the latter shares at least as much with the former as with Fight Club), but it is a consistent philosophical theme that is interwoven with and reinforced by all of the various textual elements.

The action is fine, there's a good amount of it, the music is really good for the fight scenes. White rabbit works well for the movie. There are some cool ideas like the machines working with the humans, but unfortunately, go unexplored for a weaker plot point. Morpheus and Agent Smith are both there, but not, but are played by different actors. They made a very weird and unconvincing reason for them being like that, and they go the whole movie not doing anything of significance. You could easily write them out of the movie and it'd have the same impact. Honestly, as most people expected this is inherently just another cash grab sequel that studios are pumping out all the time today, and frankly, while it had the potential to be decent it just didn't use the plot lines that could expand on the story at all. The same message and theme are explained again, but this time they even use clips from older movies to show it, to where it seems like they had no idea what to do with it and you could tell. Neo and Trinity never seemed like a powerful enough couple to be the whole drive for the matrix to even exist beyond the third movie, both narratively and literally. Carrie-Anne Moss seems bored in this movie, and I can understand why. It's also weird how they felt the need to make Trinity just as powerful as Neo. At least they didn't nerf Neo just to prop her up. But not everyone has to have the same strength to be equally as important to the story. Instead of cool fight scenes from Neo, you just get him force pushing people over and over. It's I don't know if they waited 10 years too long to make another movie. Overall Matrix Regurgitations just feels like a cash grab rehash like the Force Awakens, but now it makes fun of itself and uses old clips which just makes it feel lazier. It wasn't bad and at least it was better than the third movie, but it tells no new story and just doesn't justify its own existence. Expand
