In viewing The Matrix(1999) today, many current real world issues and commentary are discussed in great detail, setting this film as a visionary masterpiece. Now, there were two other Matrix films shortly released after the original that diverted from the apparent beaten path laid down by the original - not part of this discussion. Have you ever brought food home from the restaurant that, when originally served tasted immaculate, but just doesn't taste(or look) the same reheated at home - well, The Matrix Resurrections(2021) is such an example. Taking the leftovers of The Matrix(1999), The Matrix Reloaded(2003) and The Matrix Revolutions(2003) from the refrigerator after 20 years, mixing it all into one container then sticking it in the microwave and expecting the same taste and freshness from when it was first prepared.....no, that's not going to happen. The Matrix Resurrections(2021), also known as The Matrix Regurgitations or The Matrix Resuscitations or.....crap is a retelling of the original trilogy adapted for 2021. Gone are the extensional meanings of decades past and in place are the 21st century paint-by-numbers, gone are the groundbreaking special effects and in place is something that could have been produced by a CW Network team. The original concepts of L̶a̶r̶r̶y̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶A̶n̶d̶y̶ ̶ Lana and Lilly fall off the bridge and into the void below within the first 5 minutes of these reheated leftovers. If you have never seen any Matrix films, avoid this major catastrophe and instead discover The Matrix from the beginning, as it was intended to be told.… Expand

It seems to be à la mode and easy to complain about the Matrix Resurrections, but I bitterly remember how the movie 2 and 3 had extreme weaknesses in sense and writing (albeit many aspects of the real/sensorial human city that wereIt seems to be à la mode and easy to complain about the Matrix Resurrections, but I bitterly remember how the movie 2 and 3 had extreme weaknesses in sense and writing (albeit many aspects of the real/sensorial human city that were interesting and sometimes misunderstood I feel). In comparison to the enormous deception that were movies 2 and mostly 3, I really appreciated this "resurrection". The sense and writing were clearly superior. Also, for me, this new film had a lot of symbolic resonance (Resonance: that makes sense to me; Symbolic: or metaphor). I like it.

I presume our memory of The Matrix (I) stops a lot of people from just letting themselves be immersed and appreciate a different chapter and take on the story. Is it not also a sign that we have become so spoiled and saturated that we cannot appreciate decent (but not great) movies and give them horrible scores?… Expand

Я разочарован.
Я заставил себя досмотреть ЭТО - но не матрицу или продолжение матрицы. Всё же Братья Вачёвски умели лучше чем женщины Вачёвски.
21 век - апогей упадка культуры и ценностей и это выражено в фильмах, играх, музыке и многом другом. Креативность превратилась у многих в коричневую жижу.

I'm disappointed.
I forced myself to watch IT-but not the matrix or the continuation of the matrix. Still, the Wachowski Brothers knew better than the Wachowski women.
The 21st century is the apogee of the decline of culture and values, and this is expressed in films, games, music and much more. Creativity has turned into brown slush for many.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the original matrix was a deep symbolic dive into the overall psycho/spiritual human condition, this movie just seems like its made for people in their 40s and 50s who are having a midlife crisis and are going through career changes and a divorce. the action is so bad it feels like a bad CW tv series. I'm honestly shocked that this made it out of the editing room with no one stopping its release, im not sure if it really was just Lana pouring gasoline onto the franchise and lighting it on fire because she didnt want the studio taking her creation and **** it up themselve. it really didn't have as much woke garbage as I expected,(other than trinity riding around with neo on her back on a motorcycle which made me laugh out loud and her awakening first) it was just hollow, the new architect was the analyst, maybe it's taking a shot at modern psychiatry being used as a tool for control that is more effective than using violence but it was so poorly executed it felt like a comedy at many parts,. just wow… Expand

Evidently the main impetus for creating this movie was so that a female, i.e., Trinity, could become the most powerful being in the matrix. They made Neo out to be another hapless male. If you are expecting the same scintillating feeling as when Neo realized he was "The One" in the first Matrix, forget it! Do yourself a favor and save the money!… Expand

Speaking of Trinity, actress Carrie-Anne Moss was the one who had an excellent performance and stole the show, and the character Agent Smith who came from an incredible role with Hugo Weaving, now played by Jonathan Groff and was terrible, didn't make any presence. of impact, not even feeling that villain.

IT WAS MEDIOCRE, HAD NO IMPACT, NO RISK AND HAD MISUSE OF IDEAS SINCE THEY DID NOT KNOW HOW TO DEVELOP!… Expand

It is even referenced in the movie that the only reason they made this was to have another sequel to make some cash out if the franchise!!

So why is this movie so f*cking bad? Well first of all the casting is terrible. We did get the Original actors for Neo and Trinity (Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss) BUT we didn't get the original actors for Morpheus and Agent Smith??? Those four characters are the main characters of the franchise and we only got half of the Original actors? Wtf?! It's not like the story is so complex and well thought out that there is a reason that you CAN'T bring the original actors back. Also the original Actors (Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne) seem to still be active on the movie scene so I just don't see any reason to not bring them back at all. Anyway, a sequel without these original actors is already not worthy but dont worry, not only is the casting bad but the Story (and anything else) is also f*cking trash. Basically the Story is this: Neo and Trinity were resurrected by the Machines somehow so that they can trap then into a new version of the Matrix for reasons. Now a random girl who was awakened from the Matrix because she saw Neo once wants to save Neo and Trinity from the Matrix with a random guy who is Morpheus now for no reason (btw Morpheus is now a program that is designed to save the One because the people who made this forgot how the story of The Matrix works) After they manage to give the red pill to Neo by showing him a clip from Matrix 1 they go out to save Trinity BUT for NO REASON AT ALL (and this time I'm serious) Agent Smith is back (not really but we already discussed that) also normal people can be zombies and stand in their way and all that.

The story is bad as you might have realized by now but there are actually a few nice ideas like how in the new version of the Matrix where Neo and Trinity are trapped in, the Matrix franchise exists as a video game franchise made by Neo. Sounds like a fun idea but unfortunately they used this to make as many throwbacks to the previous movies as possible without taking logic into consideration.

Okay, the Casting sucks, the Story sucks but at least the fighting, choreography, effects and action are good right? I mean there are a lot of videogames for example where the story is bad but the gameplay is good. Well, in this moronic movie EVERYTHING is bad. The Fighting and Choreography is not like Matrix at all, they just throw each other on the ground instead of using kung fu with guns like badasses. The effects are most of the time fine but sometimes hilariously bad, there was a simple scene where somebody shot someone and there was just a blood effect that looked like a f*cking gif.

Okay enough of the rant. Basically: Bad Movie, don't watch. But If you want to see for yourself why this movie sucks ass then PLEASE Pirate it. Don't give them your money for such a piece of **** movie. It's not even a movie that is funny because it's so bad, it's just boring and sad...… Expand

Spoiler alert Trinity is the new Neo, cause nothing subverts expectations like just making the previous supporting female character into the new lead and chosen one. Fight scenes are **** and forgetful. Agent smith is annoying and not iconic in anyway. Morpheus also comes back and is also a massively wasted opportunity. This movie sucks.… Expand

The Matrix Resurrections tinkers with cool ideas of personal choice in the modern age, as well as direct meta attacks on the reboot/sequelization of IPs that should remain dead, but doesn't do or say anything with these ideas. The storytelling is downright confusing and I felt so lost throughout it. Following an intriguing first act is a truly terribly paced second act filled with endless nonsensical monologuing and a near loss of any sense of what's going on. Furthermore, the cinematography truly contains some downright ugly shots and the action sequences also range from acceptable to broadcast TV bad, as it doesn't do enough with the intricacies of The Matrix and contains some of the worst gun choreography I've seen in a movie. All of the actors give good performances, but the recasting of Smith and Morpheus felt much more jarring than I thought it'd be, with both feeling like they should've been excluded rather than recast. The Matrix Resurrections shows why this franchise should've been left on the IP shelf, as it was ridiculously overwritten, nonsensical, and honestly quite a bit cynical.… Expand

Но главное в Матрице - это многослойный и философский сюжет... до сих пор люди находят нюансы и детали, которые поражают воображение. То что мы получили сейчас.. это... АнтиМатрица, это жалкое паразитирование на культовой вещи. Мне вдвойне жаль, что к этому приложил руку один из авторов оригинала. Хотя, теперь очевидно, что она, увы, "не умеет", а Матрица - стала культом в результате работы команды талантливых людей, в которых Вачовски был лишь одним из.. и судя по всему - далеко не самым важным. Ни один элемент в этой киноотрыжке - не переплюнет оригинал и оба сиквела. Даже всё что скопипастили, выглядит хуже оригинала. Возможно, я не прав, и время покажет, но... пока, я ставлю этому фильму "1 бал", только по тому, что он, на какое то время, дал мне надежду, пусть она и не оправдалась. У всех своё мнение, но я ощутил это так, как если бы, теперь уже сестра, плюнула всем фанатам в лицо. п.с.

Holy moly, I watched this as an 36 year old together with my 25 year old friend. She didn't know the Matrix trilogy, but I did. We BOTH found this movie to be terrible. The self-referential metafictional elements are so cringeworthy and lame that the movie comes off like a bad fan film. At its best, there are brief hints of ideas that could have been used in a better way. As a whole, the movie feels cheaper and more dated than first movie which came out over 20 years ago. It seems like the Wachowski who worked on this forgot the first thing about why people liked their movies in the first place. There is no element of this that is at all redeemable or enjoyable. The directing, acting, casting, score, cinematography, editing, etc. etc. are all so disgustingly bad as to be amazing that anyone who even saw the first Matrix was remotely involved with this one. The fight scenes aren't even good, confusingly edited and appearing cheap and fake. The casting of the villains is borderline criminal. Even the set design is uninspired and dated. The film appears to be set in the cringiest part of the early 2010's, even the outfits the characters appear in being unimaginative and unstylish. There is nothing in this movie worth even thinking about. Avoid at all costs.… Expand

Wu Ping sorely missed. Hugo Weaving sorely missed. Lawrence Fishbourne sorely missed. Lighting and cinematography crew sorely missed.
Comparisons to The Last Jedi are far too kind. This is the Star Wars Christmas special of Matrix films.
I’m not the worlds biggest Matrix fan, but if I *was* the world’s Matrix biggest fan this would cause me to reenact the plot of Misery on the screenwriter… Expand

Originally, I thought this was a terrible movie. However, upon watching it again, I think I was able to see the "director's" vision. Looking at the reviews I feel like I was overly harsh so here's the most fair review I can write sans political angling by both “woke” and anti-woke people(both of which have no place in constructive criticism): Resurrections is definitely watchable but mostly retread ground, it ends up being a poor facsimile of what came before it. The ending feels unearned because of poor character development throughout. Here’s my personal list of nitpicks:

-The first 20 minutes are pure cringe. The writer clearly had no idea how to resurrect Neo and went overly meta with a game designer identity even name dropping Warner Brothers and referring to bullet-time repeatedly.

-The slick action is gone and replaced with what seems to be endless incoherent pseudo-intellectual rambling.

-The slick Cinematography is gone, the Matrix isn’t even tinted green anymore to differentiate it from the real world.

-The fight choreography is just bad and the jumpy editing doesn’t save it.

-It feels the need to continuously justify its existence via visual callbacks to the original.

-Neil Patrick Harris was an absolutely terrible pick for the analyst. I’m still not clear what his character’s job even was.

-The surrogate for Morpheus is so meta it becomes pure cringe, even making fun of the original. I actually liked Smith’s surrogate though, well done there.

-The exiles scene made no sense, they were throwaway characters to begin with. Just why?

-Neo is now too powerful despite the matrix being reset and his amnesia.

-For me the ending was thouroughly predictable given the clear pattern throughout the film of every male character being overly emotional and every female character being cool and calculated. Sadly because of this in the end Trinity’s ascension just doesn’t feel earned primarily because the suffering was all Neo’s and always had been. The only way in which Trinity even remotely can be said to have “earned” this power is her being stuck in an identity she hated and that wasn’t her, finally she finds freedom and becomes her true self(i.e. clearly the writer’s surrogate character which is not bad just poorly done).

-Finally: while this is likely unintentional on the writer’s part the ending feels like a middle-finger to Matrix fans where the writer assumes as fans we are all only interested in male saviors and that “it’s time for change”, which for me is untrue. I’m interested in well written stories and fleshed out characters in which saviors, regardless of gender, deserve to be saviors because of the trials they went through. Had Trinity been the main character instead of Neo and went through what Neo went through she fully would have deserved that power and the film would have been better for it! In fact I am surprised that route wasn’t taken.… Expand

The best part of this movie was all the clips of the first Matrix movie that were shown throughout this film. Bad story, bad acting. Neo acted more like Ted. Hopefully this movie will serve as a vehicle to introduce new people to the first 3 movies.

The first half was most of the character kissing Neo's ass and CONSTANTLY talking about how cool and revolutionary the Matrix trilogy was. It had the cringiest dialogue I've heard since....Matrix revolutions. Every time they called back to the trilogy, the movie became worse. Yet, when they added new elements to the story, it had some promise. And I gotta say, Neil Patrick Harris did really well as the new villain. It feels like this was made as some kind of medium for promoting "diversity and inclusiveness", as it has been seen with so many film as of late - something that always seem to fail, as it forces the narrative and art of the movies/shows, instead of letting it shine trough naturally.... I REALLY wanted to like this movie -- The Matrix is one of my all-time fave movies -- but Resurrections is ham-fisted and heavy-handed with poor direction, editing, cinematography, and sound design. It feels surprisingly amateurish. The brief flashbacks of the original Matrix are a literal reminder of how much better that movie was than this. "Resurrections" is the perfect word to use in the title because rather than an installment that propels the story forward, it's a rehash that simultaneously relies on fans' knowledge of the previous films while borrowing heavily from them. The whole thing feels like low-budget fan fiction.

There are too many ancillary characters who aren't fleshed out. Most of them aren't given more than a handful of lines. This neither fleshes out their character nor propels the story (such as it is) forward. Oh, and the story... I saw another reviewer say that if you don't like this movie, it's because you're not intelligent enough to understand it. Another possibility is that if you think everyone else is too dumb to understand it, maybe you're just too dumb to realize how simplistic and two-dimensional the story is. What we get here is just a 2021 version of "tech is bad" and "what's reality?" It's really not hard to understand what Lana W. is saying/asking. Unfortunately, the movie does nothing to truly explore those concepts; it just gives us lazily regurgitated Matrix tropes. Despite its 2.5-hour length, it has very little to say, and despite my love for the Neo-Trinity story, their relationship was not moved forward in any way.

One big complaint is that Carrie Ann Moss is criminally underused here. She's the best actor of the franchise, IMO, yet we hardly see her. And what's really unfortunate is that when she's pulled into the climax of the story, her character inexplicably changes in ways that make no sense at all given everything that led up to those changes. So, she's underused AND *mis*used.

Overall, Resurrections is a big disappointment for this Matrix fan, and if you're someone who hasn't seen the original trilogy, Resurrections will leave you befuddled and wishing you had that 2.5 hours of your life back. I'm sad to say that while it's not a train wreck, it's just not worth your time.… Expand

A 2 hour and 30-minute Matrix film with a surprisingly little amount of Neo and Trinity. Keanu and Carrie-Anne Moss on screen together are the high-points of the film -- their chemistry is fantastic. Carrie-Anne in particular displays easily the best acting in the film and also does look great when she does eventually get 12 seconds of combat to perform on screen. But everything else about the film is very disappointing or irritating. The no-name new cast of characters that I could not tell you any of the names of, that fan over Neo and his legend feel cringe-worthy and embarrassing to the other characters in the film. The legend worship in general feels like it cheapens the plight of the characters of the original trilogy as they all have to sit there and hear from bland new characters how cool they are. The choice to have Agent Smith return but not be played by Hugo Weaving puts Jonathon Groff in the unfortunate position of doing a bad impression of a legendary character instead of being left to deliver a new character to life.

Most importantly though, this movie is simply dull: there are no cool kung-fu scenes the originals were known for, the cinematography is bland, the majority of the cast is forgettable, Niobe returning 60 years older looks awful in her aged-up makeup and delivers a distractingly poor performance and there's a LOT of exposition. At one point Neil Patrick Harris' character monologues in front of a struggling Neo for what must've been over 5 full minutes. Perhaps the poorest decision in the film is the choice to make Morpheus' death (an event that happened off-screen) cannon. Not only does it mean we do not get to see Lawerence Fishburne reprise his most legendary role, Lana chose to write in a person who is literally tasked to impersonate Morpheus (no that's not a joke). A guy shows up, says "I'm Morpheus" and then just tries his best to act like this character for the whole film. Without any of the experience or characters building that made that man who he was. In fact, his ineptitude is kind of played for laughs at the beginning. I would've expected Neo to be pissed off (once he gets all his faculties back together) that someone would just choose to impersonate one of the most important men in his life, but he feels extremely passive throughout the film -- you'd think Neo would have something to say about the world around him after all these years but apparently not.

So yeah, I like to be positive but I was very, VERY disappointed.… Expand

And then it turns out that either the creator is not a professional at all, or the genius is not a genius at all.

It turns out that the message is correct and good, but ordinary viewers for some reason pay for it with money, time and disappointment from watching this "masterpiece".… Expand

It can be seen at a glance that all the ideas of the production crew have fallen. This fourth film did not meet the expectations of many who believe that the Matrix series is more than just an action movie.

They just buried the entire trilogy. It is not possible to watch. One gets the feeling that students were filming this film. And, of course, the left-liberal agenda is very often traced.
All hopes for a worthy continuation have been destroyed.

POW! CRACK! SWISH! BOOM! DEJA VU! IMPEDING DOOM!

18 yrs have passed in the "our" world since Revolutions, 60 yrs in the Matrix "real" world, & "The Matrix" franchise as we knew it has been cleverly turned into a video game series.

Trivial video games, coded & created by none other than, our high-flying digital superhero, Neo "The One", who is once again his Matrix friendly "Thomas Anderson". Blue-pilled & despondent, coding his faint memories into even more controlled actions via a game controller.

It is utterly depressing. Defeating. Bitter disillusionment. As Agent Smith (Anderson's new business partner) would say, "It is inevitable."

But within the Matrix, reoccurring paths are taken & those faint memories are slowly reawoken with the help from new character "Bugs" & a "Thomas Anderson" digitized memory of Morpheus.

Soon after, Thomas (Neo) & Tiffany (Trinity) are reunited, rescued & released from the Matrix human copper-top pods & suddenly the Matrix is not just another video game.

The fight for freedom once again is set in motion between our human heroes & Matrix bots. And in dire need & perfect prophecy, Trinity harnesses the power of the Matrix to fly, saving them from free fall & inevitable death.

Triumph ensues for our beloved couple because in the end, & in the beginning of it all, through the complex codings & philosophy, religious undertones & flying bullets, love is the overarching theme of "The Matrix".

Love is what binds, breaks & bonds us all. Love is a belief in one another - a thought, a memory, a feeling, & conquers all. And with the two of them together, they are fully formed, complete, & unstoppable. Together they are, "The One."

As the evocative end quote states, "Love is the genesis of everything."… Expand

"The Last Jedi" of the Matrix series... This out-ruin's Ruin Johnson on every level.
Neo even says something like "It makes me feel like everything we did in the past was pointless." Yup. Yup. Yup.

Writing, direction, cinematography - everything; just a messy pile of WTF?
Truly excruciating to watch, like a bad, really bad, fan-film. A wannabe, without even a single moment to enjoy. And not one moment of "bullet-time" even though they mention it (and show it in flashback shots). Really bizarre.
I wonder if it would have been better with both Wachowski's at the helm? Saying that, Matrix had it's time with a complete beginning, middle and end (even though I wasn't a fan of 2 & 3), so there's no need to bother continuing it now. I assume Hugo Weaving turned it down after reading the abomination of a script?… Expand

It's a 5 for me. Less a resurrection and more of a Force Awakens scenario. A big ole slab of memberberry pie a la meta. I did like the video game angle and more importantly, though underutilized, the sentient digital angle. The idea of a weird singularity where computer programs gain sentience and go to the real world is intriguing. But in the end, that little glimmer of hope and creativity is subsumed in crappy action and forgettable effects.

There's something here, just like there was something in the latter two sequels, but it's just not up to the original movie. Lot of action, hipster clothes, and silly hairdoos, but little substance.

I really would have preferred a prequel here. Something like the episodes in The Animatrix detailing the original war between humanity and machines. That could've been a whole new trilogy explaining all the gobbelty-goop of Revolutions.… Expand

No. Honestly, just don't bother. It ranges between out of place nostalgia and pure boredom. I usually love bad moves, but there's no redeeming qualities in this movie. Don't waste your time.

This movie comes across as an attempt to use the franchise for attention or to simply not leave warner bros in control of making the next sequel which is literally brought up in the movie and I can fully believe would be the actual reasoning behind the making of this sequel, the only way this could have worked is if it was broken up into a mini series for TV and all the different plot points taken and extremely expanded upon like with the animatrix which had some great ideas and didn't require neo or trinity and still added alot of lore and thought to the overall world, the cinematoraphy, the soundtrack, the fight scenes, even the majority of the dialogue is just so subpar and I notice the positive reviews focus on this power couple aspect, but that was already established all this does is reasserts that again with a dreary plot and so much fan service it almost offends the senses even to those that love it, many of them comparing spiderman to this as if for some reason they cannot understand that spiderman did not take an unsteady boot to it's franchise and delivered on what fans would have liked to see while still surprising them, the matrix gives the beloved fans of it's franchise nothing they wanted and every surprise is more of question of why? why would you make this? why not create a new movie to explore what you wanted to say because this was just not it at all.… Expand

It has none of the deep thoughts and life questioning concepts of the 1st movie, none of the spiritual parts of the 2nd one and none of the action of the 3rd one. Feels like some cheap parody. And dumping the whole original plot down the toilet with Neo being the chosen one.....who's idea was that? Trinity can ****? Holy crap.… Expand

Pointless story with previous characters brought in for no reason. Also could not invest in any of the new actors. The old age makeup was a farce on one returning character. Effects dull. I love Matrix 1 & 2. The third one was kind of meh, but had a pretty good ending scene. This fourth Movie here however is one of the worst things i have ever seen. It's not as bad as USER score, but it's not good as CRITIC score either.

I'm going to have to watch it a couple more times but it felt like a remake that didnt need to happen. Calling people bots just made it seem like it wasn't our world people were living in, more like NPC's in free guy, which just goes against what the matrix movies are IMO. I understand it was still human people but calling them bots was just dumb

I may be overly harsh because I expected a lot , or I may be kind because I liked the trilogy , only time will tell what everyone thinks of it, but I can only give it a 5/10 and even that does feel a little kind on my behalf. Make it a 48/100 lol.… Expand
