Truly dreadful, this movie is stuck in the past. The action scenes are confusing and dissapointing. What little story there is simply repeats the past, gives jew characters no time to shine and ends just when something should have happened

The Wachowski charm from the original trilogy is all but gone. The fight sequences, so core to the entire joy of seeing Matrix movies, are chopped into meaningless quick cuts that are less impressive than most tv shows these days. I mean, the original had fight sequences choreographed by the legendary Wu Ping. The story isn’t the worst thing ever, and the performances weren’t all that bad, but it really doesn’t do anything worthwhile. Keanu is still a bad ass, just go watch John Wick instead of this failed attempt. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It started out so good but took a hard nose dive halfway through. The introduction opened so many possibilities and then none of them were taken. I thought the cast was fine enough, but the 2nd half didn't feel like there were consequences for anyone's actions. Remember the original trilogy? People died when mistakes were made; they even referenced it in the duologue here. But now every single person gets saved and it's a happy ending? It doesn't carry the same weight and feels like the easy way out. Expand

Matrix Resurrections is an extremely well-done film that has a solid story that covers both what you'd expect out of a follow up to the Matrix Revolutions but also spends the early part of the movie dealing with the meta text of what it means to make a new matrix movie and the glaring problems with reboot and sequel culture. This is a far more meaningful film than any late sequel/reboot to come before it (perhaps because one of the original authors is involved, thank you Lana).

The only problems I see people regularly complaining about that are reasonable relate to the use of CGI and the cinematography, simply put this movie just doesn't look as good as the previous entries however that is purely down to the way the scenes were shot and edited, the sets, the costumes, and the concepts are all great. Still, such a thing is a minor complaint and I'd suggest anyone using that as a reason to give this movie a low rating is missing the forest for the trees. This movie is deeper than its action, just as the previous Matrix films were about so much more than their set pieces.

Oh, and if you dislike the movie because it's "woke"; congrats, you failed to understand that the whole series has always been "woke" from the start. Your prize is this dunce cap. Enjoy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well... I wanna like it, but its not great, even bad in direct comparison to the originals. The biggest problem i have with this movie is that they are trying to reboot the matrix with a mix of fresh character and old ones from the original trilogy while heavily relying on the nostalgia factor to make the whole experience more palatable instead of actually trying to introduce something completely new. The story isn't really intuitive nor does it invoke the same feelings or atmosphere as the originals despite them trying really hard to do so and maybe that's one of the problems here that they are trying way way too hard.

The plot itself is rather flat and almost comical with the ultimate motives the main villain has, which is a shame considering one of the main aspect of the originals was that it animated the viewer to think and question. I did however like the overall look of the movie, it doesn't have the typical green hue the originals had but that didn't bother me too much, the fight scenes were not that good but i liked the music. The chosen outfits of the characters left something to be desired and the dialogs especially in the first act of the movie range from alright to pure cringe. Overall i'd say its a less then average experience, if you liked the originals you are better off just rewatching those and yes that includes 2 and 3 because they are still better then this. Its not amazing by any stretch and i already approached it with the expectation that it was certainly not gonna be anywhere near as good as Matrix 1 and even then the few expectations i did have were let down. And who in the world decided that Neo should never even touch a gun throughout the whole movie? Matrix literally created the iconic "Guns, lots of guns." quote. Just watch the originals, this is certainly not the worst movie in existence but the originals are just so much better.

The Matrix Resurrections probably doesn't need an introduction but I'll give one anyway. It's time to return to a world of two realities, the seemingly real world and what lies behind it. Mr. Anderson (Keanu Reeves) must follow the white rabbit once again, cue the guns and slow motion bullet time. Look I'm sure we can all agree that The Matrix is a brilliant movie but with two bad sequels that we'd all prefer to forget exist at all. When a franchise ends up with more bad movies in it than good ones it's probably time to call it a day and move on to something else. Well that's what should happen but it's not what ends up happening, we're living in a constant stream of remakes and franchises so is it any wonder they decided to have another crack at The Matrix? I got caught up in the hype, sure didn't we all? The chance to see iconic duo, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss onscreen together again with Lana Wachowski directing. There was so much damn potential and what did we get? Rubbish, that's what we got. Enough already, let the franchise die and stay dead.

The Matrix Resurrections is desperately living in the shadow of the original. Surprisingly there's a good bit of footage from the original in this sequel. So much that I ended up feeling like I'd rather be watching that instead and if I had known what this was going to turn out like I probably would have stuck to the first movie and not bothered with this unnecessary sequel at all. The opening felt like a remake and as the story progressed the less invested I became. The Matrix gave us ground-breaking stunts and memorable fight scenes but The Matrix Resurrections gave us nothing we haven't already seen before only better. I loved whenever Neo and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) were onscreen together but aside from that it's an overblown mess. The decision not to have Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving reprise their roles as Morpheus and Agent Smith was a huge mistake in my opinion. If you're going to use people's nostalgia to get them to see another sequel then you better get the original cast back. Yes I was excited to see Neo and Trinity again but leaving out Fishburne and Weaving felt wrong. Absolutely no disrespect towards Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jonathan Groff. There's nothing wrong with their performances but there's not a whole lot you can do with a badly written script, and a story no one asked for. Yes it looks impressive visually but that's not enough to save it.

I'm annoyed at myself for getting excited for a new Matrix movie. Well I learned my lesson now and I'm going to go back to just acknowledging one Matrix movie. The Matrix Resurrections is not worth your time and not recommended. For that it's only getting 3/10, for Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. As for the rest I'm already trying to forget I've seen it.

It was not supremely good. It was not awfully bad either. It just adds nothing of value to the franchise. They should have stopped with the 3rd.

Also, and as much as love Keanu Reeves, he just always plays the same emotionless character and it's becoming a tad annoying to me.

The combat scenes are a mess. There is too much information, too close combat and no clarity. Technically the are well done but everything else is too fragmented. The music wasn't really good, except maybe in two or three places. At least the actors are pretty good. The main characters seems to have fun. The best of them was surely the Analyst. I give M4 a 52%. There was a story but it was send at the speed of a train to the viewer, with little though on how it's processed. Expand

When I heard that they were making a 4th Matrix movie, I was baffled. The Matrix Revolution (2003) ended fine even if the movie itself was a mixed bag. The only thing that gave me hope was that one of the directors from the original MatrixWhen I heard that they were making a 4th Matrix movie, I was baffled. The Matrix Revolution (2003) ended fine even if the movie itself was a mixed bag. The only thing that gave me hope was that one of the directors from the original Matrix trilogy was returning. The premise is "To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, Mr. Anderson, aka Neo, will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. If he's learned anything, it's that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of -- or into -- the Matrix. Neo already knows what he has to do, but what he doesn't yet know is that the Matrix is stronger, more secure and far more dangerous than ever before". So should it have been resurrected or stay shut down?

One of the things I liked in this movie was the ideas that were explored. In the first act of the movie, it's revealed that Thomas (Keanu Reeves) created a very popular trilogy of games; The Matrix Trilogy. It then becomes incredibly meta and self-aware which was oddly enjoyable. The film also explores some things that have changed since The Matrix Revolution (2003). A lot of these were very interesting and I am glad that it didn't feel like nothing came of Neo and Trinity's sacrifice. The world of the Matrix has changed and the "real life" world has also changed. The changes for both were no doubt very compelling to watch. Keanu and Carrie return as Neo and Trinity respectively. It was great to see them both and I find the chemistry between the two to still be there. Out of the new characters, I love Jessica Henwick who plays Bugs. She is the cool rebellious character who would break the rules for the right thing. I also think Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who plays the new Morpheus is also great in the role. He does a good job of giving off a similar vibe to that of Laurence Fishburne, the original Morpheus. However, this new Morpheus feels so inconsequential to the story that I wondered why they even bothered having Morpheus in the film. Likewise, Jonathan Groff plays the new Smith and I just don't understand why. Like the new Morpheus, the new Smith is also very inconsequential to the story and just feels like he is just kind of there for nostalgia bait. Unlike Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan does not feel like Hugo Weaving, the original Smith. So it is very jarring when he is on screen and is spouting lines like he is supposed to be Smith when it does not feel like it whatsoever. Both of these two could've just been entirely new characters. It also annoys me that the director didn't just bring back both Laurence and Hugo if they were planning on bringing both their characters back. Laurence and Hugo, to me, are both also important people to the Matrix franchise. The story didn't work well for me either. The first act is being self-aware about how studios love milking franchises and not doing anything bold with it. Yet this film does the exact thing it is trying to criticize. After the first act, it becomes a very generic story about saving the girl and stopping the bad guy which is disappointing. The first act also retreads a lot of the same beat for beat stuff that was in the first Matrix film. The main character notices things are off, he then meets a person who convinces him the world is fake, the mirror sequence, the red pill and blue pill stuff, the learning Kung Fu sequence. It is also felt odd having to hear the characters explain the concept of the Matrix again even though this is the 4th entry and most people watching this would already know that. The movie also has way too much exposition and people explaining things. There are moments where I felt like I was being bombarded with way too much information. Sometimes it feels like it would be better to show and not tell but this film does a lot of telling.

Another aspect that made the Matrix trilogy stand out was the iconic action sequences. However, they are incredibly boring in this film. The hand-to-hand fight scenes are overly edited with quick cuts that made it irritating to watch. There are no cool long shots like in the original Matrix trilogy. The choreography is just not that great and it feels weak. What makes it worse is that a lot of the action scenes just has Neo use some kind of force push power which screams lazy. The visuals and music score are fine but they do lack impact and are not memorable either. The film also includes a lot of flashbacks and footage from the older Matrix movies and I find it a little annoying. It feels like they were trying to beat it into the audiences head "remember this!".

In the end, I came out of this thinking that they shouldn't have made the 4th film. It did not feel like a story that was worth telling. This film is just pandering towards peoples nostalgia and it does not do a good job at it either. I don't know if this is a start of a new Matrix trilogy but if it is, I am not very optimistic about this new direction.

In the first leg of the film, ResurrectionsThis movie was always going to be in a difficult position; given how the story was entirely completed with Revolutions; and in the beginning it feels like the film was built around that difficulty. In the first leg of the film, Resurrections seems like it's trying to be a self aware satire of the industry and tribute to the original film; yet this dynamic fades away quickly, and eventually changes to just a boring, poorly paced retread of the franchise's tropes without any of the charm. Once the second act starts, this movie just runs out of energy. Story beats from the original film are dug up and re-used in just the right way to feel genuinely pointless without even invoking nostalgia. The way characters are re-introduced, (especially the ones played by different actors)feels inorganic, and ultimately just comes across as futile. These returning characters feel like bad imitations of themselves, and the actual backstory linking the events of the previous films seems forced; the fact that this was never planned when the original series was made is painfully clear. Even if you can look past the disappointing plot the action scenes this series is known so well for really don't do much to come across as special in this one. While there are some memorable moments, the spectacle in this movie is at best almost on par with the original series, and at its worst incomprehensible. TL;DR This movie is competently made, and in the beginning genuinely interesting, but it quickly devolves into uninspired rehashes of what's come before, which fail to ever achieve the same level of significance or even spectacle as the original films. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked some twists in this film such as Smith being suddenly helpful then being a huge a-hole again and the scene where bots were used as bombs was ridiculously disturbing and reminded me of The Happening, a movie that seriously scared the s**t out of me. Sadly, this movie is in the realm of dumpsites.

I dislike this movie for the reasons numbered below.

1. There's not much action and the fight scenes felt so weak.
2. Neo just waves his hand at those bots to defeat them to the point it becomes unbearable to watch. We all know Keanu can still do some badass martial arts right John Wick?
3. Gunfights dominated this movie. The way they replicated those action scenes that made The Matrix Trilogy iconic was cringy and weak.
4. Does the camera man have some kind of mild epilepsy or somethin'? His seizures seem to occur when people fight in front of him. This almost feels like I'm watching those horrible Bourne fight scenes again and I almost puked 'cause of all the camera shakes and the infuriating throw-impact cuts. RIP action-focused cinematography.
5. Trinity being the one who unlocked her flight powers first before Neo smells like feminist agenda to me. It's fine that she was the key to Neo's Ultra Instinct mojo but her being set as more powerful than Neo at the end didn't feel right. What was she, The Two? Or The 0.5?
6. Knowing the fact that nothing actually improved after all those sacrifices in the previous films almost made me shoot the screen with a shotgun. In fact, everything went down to s**t 'cause humans were forced to hide even deeper, Zion got f****d up real bad, the Matrix was still infected with that God-awful version of Smith, and bots were added to f**k things up even worse 'cause Smith can easily infect them no matter the distance. What did Neo accomplish? Humans being able to grow strawberries with the help of rebel machines who sided with humans after his sacrifice in Revolutions? Dafack (face palm)
7. The Brass Against rendition of Wake Up by Rage Against The Machine in the end credits was an abomination for me. I hate it and it made me hate this movie even more. Murdering a masterpiece is unforgivable. This film was a 5 before I heard that song but I decided to give this a 3 for I detest that rendition at the end. The original song was already perfectly used in the first Matrix movie.

If I can choose to forget one movie I'd choose this one. They should have stayed at Revolutions. It's funny though how Neo in this film didn't want to make a 4th game about The Matrix. The filmmakers should have listened to Neo.

It's all just really either a bunch of amateur or Hollywood actors happy to a easily get Matrix status / money, no soul.

It's just really a trash movie pin-pointedly designed to make you never look for a continuation of the Matrix trilogy ever again. I guess this is also a way to do it.

It would have been way better to just let a new story or destiny unfold, characters never seen before and let people write & direct it who aren't way above 30 years old and haven't been busy smelling their own armpits and farts since 2003.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Even at their most tedious points, the original trilogy was always engaging at some level. You were invested Neo's story, and wanted to witness it to its conclusion. But now there is this. A movie not just incredibly cynical or on-the-nose regarding Hollywood throwing out remakes and reboots, but a movie that makes everything that happened in the trilogy utterly pointless. Further, Matrix Resurrections looks like a TV movie. From the slowed-down from 24fps action (typically you shoot at a higher framerate for slo-mo) to the mediocre action scenes that could be from any streaming action movie. And brace yourselves for the laugh-out-loud wire work in the final scenes. Yes, we've gone from the mind-bending bullet time of the original movie to actors visibly bouncing on hidden wires. One of the most disappointing movies I've watched. Expand

Not a complete disaster but a number of stylistic and artistic choices kept dragging it down. The story smacked very heavily of soft reboot despite their Adaptation-style lampshading of it. Fight scenes were truly awful; the camera was constantly far too close for some reason, as though directed by someone who did not direct the Matrix. Music sounded royalty-free. Jada Pinkett-Smith in old makeup... Named robot characters that have no use except to high-five someone once... A nearly incomprehensible reason to bring Neo and Trinity back... G.I. Joe gunfights like never before... Very awkward dialogue between Neo and Trinity that made me feel like a friend was making a social faux pas... These are some of the oddities. It's not that the original trilogy was Citizen Kane or something (the dialogue was cringey from day one), but other than some weird story structure in the sequels it was at least well-shot, characters' motivations were comprehensible, the music was highly memorable, and it didn't tackle too many themes at once.

Just imagine the Matrix, but:
1. Music's bad
2. There are no monologue-worthy actors, but there are still monologues
3. Action scenes are all zoomed in, you have no idea what's happening
4. The story is at least as convoluted as Reloaded and Revolutions, characters seem to do stuff for no real reason
5. Keanu Reeves talks about painting the sky with rainbows in his weird deadpan

In a word, bizarre. Just think of your least favorite Matrix and all the reasons it was your least favorite and this has more of that.

I've found all of the installments to be long-winded exercises in metaphysically oriented intellectual masturbation broken up periodically by stylish action sequences and glitzy special effects. And, regrettably, this latest sequel is mostly more -- a lot more -- of the same, a picture that could have easily (and more accurately) been titled "Another Matrix Movie." What's especially disappointing here is that the film actually starts out with some promise, presenting a narrative in which the picture hints at being a delightful send-up of itself. It also includes some interesting allusions to the lack of meaningful distinctions in contemporary political forces and the public's often-sheep-like responses to the dictates of officialdom. And there's some pleasant humor served up in the supporting performances of Neil Patrick Harris and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. However, despite these fine attributes, this overlong slog runs out of steam quickly, relying on nostalgic flashbacks from the franchise's previous installments and trotting out an increasingly tiring series of explosions, fights and bombastic special effects to carry a story that becomes so convoluted it's hard to imagine it holding anyone's attention (even those who are metaphysically oriented like yours truly). At bottom, there seems to be little to characterize this latest sequel other than it being a vehicle to provide its distributor with yet another cash cow and director Lana Wachowski (sans sibling Lilly) with an opportunity to redeem herself in Hollywood circles (at least at the box office) after several disappointing outings. As a consequence, though, the film fails to deliver much of anything new, fresh or exciting, instead presenting viewers with a release that might have been more aptly called "The Matrix Retreads." I was affraid to see an LGBTQ+ propaganda or some PC **** and it was not not the case, so at least one good point (even though you could argue that there is a lot of implied messages about the transcandance of the gender through the machines etc...).
My main problem is the film in itself. It feels "odd" or "out of place". I did not believe a single second in the new Matrix update that is now Yellowish. I thought it was too warm for me. But also Keanu... what a useless dumb f in is Avatar form. It looks like the director asked him to play the Keanu Reeves from the Cyberpunk 2077 E3 presentation in 2019 ! Back bent, clumsy and always with this agape face... What a disappointment. Also the movie is pretty predictible and the plot is... How to say it... Kind of "meh". Sure there are some interesting shots but, not much more. Also I realised when the movie ended that Neo NEVER EVER Touched a single gun... I don't know if they are trying to differ John Wick from The Matrix but for me it's a shame.
Overall I did not have high expectations but it's far from good even if not catastrophic. I'll just re watch the masterpiece from 1999 that had in my opinion far better VFX in terms of creativity and grittyness.

Also, can you people in California stop it with the SJW feminist BS already. You guys have ruined every damn remake in the past decade with this nonsense. Trinity did not have to save Neo. Omg how progressive and enlightening. Clap clap for all the women now. That was disgusting. Also, why the hell is “morpheus” all giddy and happy go lucky at times. Morpheus was a boss. The disrespect is unreal in this movie. You know how I mentioned marvel-esque? WHY DOES EVERYTHING NEED TO HAVE A CUTE LITTLE ANIMAL FOR THE WOMEN TO AWW AT. Seriously stop it. UNLESS you own the rights to a succesfull blockbuster franchise and care more about producing low effort sequels to keep te money coming in!" That's what should have been on the poster for this Abomination of a movie. "Not like this..." would have been tasteful too.

The Matrix Resurrections is fan fiction, written while making burned toast by people that did not understand the original movies. The point of the matrix is that not everything is the way you think it is, just because someone tells you it is that way. Are you making genuine choices, or are you fooled into believing that you make your choices? The problem with humans, to keep them happy in the matrix while the machines use them as batteries, is that they need the illusion of choice to accept the simulated reality around them.

The Matrix trilogy is one of thé, if not the best, movie franchise to have included strong philoshycal and religious imagery into its movie without ever saying it out loud. The subtlety with which this has been implemented in the movies is so good that you can watch the original movies ten times and learn something new every time. With Resurrections you are guarenteed to want to slice your own wrists a bit more every time you watch it.

Philosophy, religious imagery and strong themes like choice, love and destiny are gone in favor of futuristic and comedic elements like programmes that have actual emotions instead of seeing them like a word in their program. Neo is trapped in the matrix with Trinity who has been brought back to life for the second time in the franchise, only to serve as a plot point and to suddenly have powers like the One. A new version of the matrix and its new architect try to harnass the power between Neo and Trinity as there are 'power shortages', and the machines now wage war amongst each other... which is by far the dumbest idea to have been introduced into this movie.

Zion has been rebranded through the powers of CGI and is now called IO. Morpheus is dead because Laurence Fishburne was smart enough not to return for this travesty, and Agent Smith is played by a new actor because Hugo Weaving was also not touched in the head. Jada Pinket Smith returns as Niobe, with some of the worsed de-aging make-up i've seen in a long time. Even though IO is huge, we only ever really see one particular platform where almost every IO scene is shot... very lazy. The same can by the way be said for most of the movie. Small sets that copy parts of the original movies are used for its scenes, and most of the world is CGI.

I'm not sure what to say. If someone told me the story of this movie and asked me if it would make for a worthy sequel, i would have told them to seek medical attention. This is the same dumb, lazy and out of touch sequel **** like Independence Day Resurgence, The Predator and Alien Covenant. One of the Wachowski brothers might have been involved in this, but it sure seems like none of the original creators were.

I hate this abomination. I'm glad i didn't have to watch this in theatres. **** you Warner Bros. **** you Keanu for accepting this disgraceful movie rol. 1/10. Better ideas have been cancelled, just like this should have been.

and I thought it worked so well and smartly. It was like “ooooh…now I see it.” The costumers and cinematographers did such a perfect job of making Neo and Trinity look so similar throughout. Made so much more sense. When I was 20-ish and watching the first one, this wouldn’t have been the movie I wanted. But one of the few times 20-some years later that the franchise and I both matured at the same rate. Bugs was amazing. Really liked her.

My main complaints about the movie have more to do with the delivery of the story, the feeling of it overall being rushed, and the special fx being mediocre. Is it amazing? Hell no. Is it good? Kind of. It was a fun watch and Keanu was great, but this had a completely different vibe compared to the original trilogy, which I didn’t mind too much but I can see why a lot of people don’t like it. Much less doomsday and a lot more comical. It really bothers me though that the ending leaves room for more sequels, which at this point would just feel like a cash grab. We got a happy albeit stereotypical ending, so for the love of god just let it end there. It was a nice nostalgia trip but more movies past this would just be beating a dead horse. Expand

Whilst Keanu ostensibly reprises his role as Anderson/Neo, it would be more accurate to say that he's playing Lana Wachowski, as much of the movie is, essentially, Lana talking directly with the viewer, about what The Matrix means to people and why a fourth instalment in the franchise would be pointless and disappointing and why she simply won't make one.
Towards this end there is an unenthusiastic continuation to the story, but just as it goes nowhere and feels empty, we're constantly being told by Keanu/Lana why a sequel is such a bad idea, even as it happens before us.
I think it's pretty funny that a movie that so clearly states its intentions, over and over again, is so bashed by the exact same people that the movie tells us it's not going to try and placate.

This isn't The Matrix 4; this is a two hour admonishment of the way movie studios and franchise fans, force artists to make garbage sequels.
It's not subtle. The message is front and centre and delivered astonishingly effectively. Anyone not understanding that deserves to be unhappy that they didn't get The Matrix 4, because the joke is very clearly on them.

I get there are some differences between the first movies but as Smith says in the last movie "I know you said the story was over for you, but that's the thing about stories. They never really end, do they? We are still telling the same stories we've always told, just with different names, different faces and I have to say I'm kind of excited. After all these years, to be going back to where it all started. Back to the Matrix." I think what people need to see that things were never gonna be the same after the first movie. People were never gonna be happy with the following movies. Making a sequel doesn't mean **** on the legacy of the trilogy. I felt great going back to the matrix and I don't understand the hate. The movie still made me ask wtf is going on at times, just like the trilogy. I just feel like people nowadays complain and cry like babies when they don't get what they want. Expand

It would feel way out of place but the director has stated there was no plan.. and it feels like that's the truth. So unfortunately the winner here is "Money"$$$. I wish it weren't so ridiculously true but it is $$$. Not so much for some of the actors who believe in what there doing but with the hap hazard mess this movie is... It feels like the movie and gaming are now hand in hand with the "plan" release nostalgia that's underdeveloped and overtly PC resulting in "money" made while basically picking the carcass of whatever story has a cult following and killing it for another 10+ year wait till they do it again. Not one to want to be so negative people do get reboots and or retries right. Blade Runner 2049, Dune, and Mad Max F.R. come to mind. Streamers, last week came the long-awaited return of a franchise that changed the way many thought of the world around y2k, The Matrix. This Christmas, 22 years later, the franchise has been resurrected from the John wick depths of movies inStreamers, last week came the long-awaited return of a franchise that changed the way many thought of the world around y2k, The Matrix. This Christmas, 22 years later, the franchise has been resurrected from the John wick depths of movies in the form of The Matrix Resurrections. Of course, we have Keanu Reeves bringing back his classic role of Neo trying to break free of the matrix once again. Let's see how this 4th installment went.

Now, I know plot wise from the third movie you're thinking... Didn't white Jesus die in the last movie? The answer is literally that answer; and so, the action sequences are the only reason to watch this movie. The plot as a whole is whack, uncreative and a waste of time and money. What I will say is that they should've combined the third movie and this film because that might have been a better use of entertainment time. This movie felt better as a continuation, ending and hope-for-a-future sequel than third installment of the original Matrix Trilogy, which to me confirms that they wasted time with The Matrix Revolutions. The problem is this movie's plot feels like a complete retread. It almost feels like The Matrix re-do me-too movement. As a whole there's nothing wrong with the plot per se, but following a movie like The Matrix which was so iconic and game changing, the payoff with Resurrections just feels weak. If you're looking for a game changer, this isn't the one.

Now, as far as action goes, the movie is semi-entertaining, particularly as a streaming option. Why semi you ask? Well, a lot of the action was repetitive and again not as cool as the original film or a lot of new violent films out now. I blame you Johnny-Two-Toes-Wick. I guess what it really comes down to is that the movie has good elements but it's just not as cool as you want it to be. It's above average in execution but everything else is just average.

Unfortunately, The Matrix Resurrections just doesn't live up to the hype of the original Matrix. After 18 years of waiting, you just want a bit more. The movie was actually very crisp and looked very good, but the storyline was just boring and uncreative. If you're looking for some nostalgia and good action, this is definitely the flick to catch on a streaming service but no need to rush to the theater. Grab the matinee for the theater (or not because omicron is crazy) and a big box for the hell of it on HBO Max (I mean it's free you can't not watch it).

same old or something new?

The Matrix Resurrections feels like a Matrix movie for a new generation, with the story elements of the first two films. i understand that the point of the Matrix itself is to be a cycle but do they have to follow most of the same beats?

i don't dislike the movie, i just thought it would offer more because of the new concepts they introduced but then i took a step back and realized that most of the things they introduced were just a setup for sequels and possibly spin offs. i do want to see more of the Matrix franchise but i felt this was just kind of disappointing, to long and just a little boring and bland.

i like this film but i was hoping for more. the acting was pretty bad and the characters from the previous franchise were either underused or just poorly written and the new villains were all bad, but that's just my opinion. i think the franchise should be handed off to new hands to see what new writers and directors can do with it. maybe a new group of creators can bring new life to the franchise.

p.s. the Visual Effects were better than I thought they were going to be and i really want to see more of the new characters because they were the most interesting thing in this film.

The matrix resurrection’s started fairly slow, however a lot of interesting ideas that were used. Loved seeing familiar faces, however I do wish there could have been more. The Mr Smith character was wrong on so many levels and I just hope when they make the next one, which seems likely, they take this and so much more criticism and make the next one a lot better than this. Overall, it was quite good and fun to watch, although nothing compared to the first two. Expand

By far the best sequel to the original Matrix. The last two felt like what the movie studios wanted, this one feels like the red pill that the Wachowskis want you to take again.
I can understand that the break from the trilogies aesthetic and action will be jarring to many, but if that is all you come into this movie expecting then you are missing the point, the mental stimulation it intends to give and the enjoyment to be had.

The Watchowskis did not expect their Matrix to become a cultural phenomenon. As such, both of its sequels fell into the usual trap of topping itself. They both failed miserably. This time around, Lana sans her sister attempt to provide a follow up, serving their exact sensibility and commentary to today's audiences. The result is a divisive response. Where are all the old casts? Where are the so called bullet time level innovations? Guess what folks. There is none of that here. The action sequences are surprisingly very lukewarm. There is no attempt to top the previous efforts. Even Watchowsky in a meta way commented about it. Yet, what we cannot deny is that this is a labor of love for all involved, and seeing Reeves and Anne-Moss back again, and the surprising and heart felt storyline is worth the price of admission for old fans like me. The original Matrix is more like a thriller, and when this Matrix is in that mode, it delivers that suspense. So to summarize, it is better than the previous two efforts but is not the original, which is a 'one in a million' kind of film. Expand

Everyone wants Neo to come back and be the center of the movie, but it turns out that he is not, which is great for a change. I don't want the previous trilogy retold, I want something new and this movie brought that. Not here to spoil things or argue about "woke" culture. The story itself is pretty interesting and the writers and story tellers have done a wonderful job of updating it to modern times. Frankly, I had a blast watching it and would recommend anyone who wants to watch it and was a fan of the previous trilogy to watch it without any preconceptions or bias. Sure Neo (Keanu) is an amazing person and his character was pretty damn great in the first trilogy, but so was Trinity (Carrie-Anne). Just keep that in mind. Expand

Another return to another long-dormant franchise. In this one, we see Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) having returned to a normal life and living blissfully unaware within the Matrix as a top-dog video game developer based off of his experiences from the previous films, only to find himself being pulled back into reality to further face his destiny as Neo, as well as past threats and familiar faces, including Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss). I think I speak for just about every fan of the incredible and game-changing first film when I say that both 'Reloaded' and 'Revolutions' left so much to be desired in terms of overall execution, as well as building upon the first and all of the mind-blowing and innovative things it ushered in for the action and sci-fi genres when it was first released back in 1999. So it goes without saying that I approached this new one that's released 18 years after 'Revolutions' with hopeful caution. If it could at least top the last two films for me, then my expectations would be glady met and satisfied, and I'm happy to report that that's exactly the case here with this film! Director Lana Wachowski seemingly knew how difficult of a task it'd be to try and live up to the already perfect first film, and so instead, we're graced with a film here that embraces and celebrates all of the best aspects of it, such as the stunning action choreography and sequences, with just the right amount of nostalgia sprinkled throughout. The action here is as top-notch and entertaining as almost everything we saw in the first film! Furthermore, the inept Jesus/messiah symbolism surrounding Neo is completely done away with that really bogged down the last two installments. Reeves is also in top form here, giving us some of Neo's most epic and even humanistic moments as well. Carrie-Anne Moss is also a welcome return here and stands out in several moments throughout as well! The film even finds room to cleverly poke fun at itself and the franchise's past, becoming very meta in some scenes, especially towards the beginning. Granted, there are some pacing issues here and there, along with a slightly excessive amount of exposition, but all of this is greatly overshadowed by a very ambitious and for the most part expertly-crafted new addition to the franchise that none of us knew was coming or needed for the longest time. Overall, I found it to be a very worthy and greatly entertaining installment that was able to right the wrongs of so many things about the last two films, and is easily what I'd consider to be the next best film in the franchise behind the ever-so-classic and amazing first film! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It feels like the synopsis of a really great 4 hour movie. It lacked flow and seemed to skip tonnes of exposition. The writing was sloppy and cinematography lacked any nuance. The story, CGI and action is great though. The movie makes sense from a chronological standpoint, but there a many leaps in the timing. For example: The first time Morpheus attempts to contact Neo is immediately followed by a 2nd attempt - it feels like a complete scene is missing between them. Perhaps the directors cut will be more compelling. Expand

I've seen it a couple of times now, I really don't understand where all these bad reviews are coming from...

If you went to the theatre expecting another Matrix (the original), then you had unrealistic expectations, as no movie from this franchise will ever equal or surpass the original. And so to give this movie a bad score based on that unfounded disappointment, seems rather unfair to me.

I liked the updated Matrix. I was glad I found out what happened to Neo and Trinity after the end of Revolutions. I'm also quite happy with how the movie ended. The new architect was spot on (remember how much **** everyone gave the old architect?). Smith's storyline could have received some more screentime. The way the Merovingian was treated would be my only critique of this movie, as it was quite over the top, to the point it was cringy...

I hope everyone gives this movie a second chance, and finds it worth their time to review their initial reviews.

Especially in the beginning the movie entertains some interesting ideas. Being incredibly self-aware and meta the movie reflects on the legacy of the Matrix movies and ponders where a sequel should go next.
The initial premise is also interesting: What if the Matrix was just a piece of fiction designed by a mentally ill game dev? Once again the movie makes us doubt what is real and what is fake. And in those moments I think Matrix Ressurections really shines.
However, especially in the second half it all falls apart and just seems like mediocre nostalgia bait. There is little agency, there are way too many pointless cameos and callbacks to the previous movies and ultimately the movie doesn't seem to have much to say after the initial points it raises in the first hour of its runtime

It's a damn shame that they couldn't take the initial premise and take it into a new exciting direction rather than just rehashing the old stuff.
The potential was there. I think a lot of the new characters were actually fairly likeable (e.g. Bugs or the Psychiatrist) but ultimately they get sidelined so that we can see an aging Neo and Trinity in action again (by the way, the action is also not as great as the previous movies either).

All in all a huge letdown. There are some highs but also lots of lows. I think it's a bit better than Matrix Revolutions but definitely worse than the original or even Matrix Reloaded

When it was announced that another sequel is coming, I was mostly indifferent about it because that is just Hollywood now, anything can be brought back. When the first full trailer dropped for The Matrix Resurrections, it piqued my interest a bit but I didn't get hyped or had high hopes even if some of the original cast is returning as well as one of the creators i.e Lana Wachowski because, in this day and age, it is more likely to be a letdown. And as it turns out, that was precisely the case. This is, without a doubt, the worst movie in the franchise. BUT I was pleasantly surprised that after seeing the negative reception from a lot of people it wasn't an outright terrible experience for me and I ended up enjoying several parts of it even if I wouldn't call the movie good but rather a middling to above-average experience owing to my predisposition and fanboy bias towards this world.

Returning to the world of The Matrix after more than 20 years certainly carried a hefty dose of nostalgia and it was plainly enjoyable simply being thrust back into that realm. Seeing Keanu Reeves as Neo again lit up the fan in me. Having to deal with the matrix again and retreading events from the first one, despite being an obvious nostalgia bait, was entertaining especially when the movie was self-aware about it and had a meta-narrative going on. In fact, the time spent in the matrix during the first half was probably my favourite, especially when you view it from the machines or The Analyst's POV. It would have been wonderful to have Laurence Fishburn and Hugo Weaving reprising their roles but the replacement for Morpheus, Yahya Adul-Mateen II, wasn't bad. Felt like a hip version of Morpheus. Can't say the same for the new Agent Smith but he did bring some unintentional hilarity, so there's that. In fact, there was a lot of comedy relative to the previous parts, both intentional and unintentional. Some of it worked, a lot of it didn't with some scenes being pure cringe as was the case with a certain cameo.

You get a new crew of characters but apart from Jessica Henwick's character Bugs, none of them were interesting or had any proper presence. The only connection I felt was that several of the actors were from Sense8, a series I happen to like. The performances were fine, including Neil Patrick Harris and Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Trinity. The second half of the movie deals more with the real world and at first, I was enjoying seeing how things have developed after Revolutions. There were intriguing tidbits and scarce info dumps as well as developments which I liked and I was wishing the movie would explore more but it was busy rushing on with its own clunky main plot. Maybe they are saving it for further sequels which I'm not sure they'll even get a greenlit on. To make matters worse, the movie, regrettably, leaned too heavily on the nostalgia baiting and dangling keychains instead of balancing it out. It was spread out throughout the runtime with the most egregious one being flashbacks of scenes from the previous movies which acted as a constant reminder that while you're back in this world, it's nowhere near as well-executed, a self-inflicted detrimental element. The element that actually disappointed me the most was the audiovisual experience, something I expected we would at least get in a strong manner even if all else fails. The action, while being fine-ish for a modern Hollywood big-budget movie, was way too poorly executed in comparison to the previous films. The trilogy was known for its Martial Arts and Gun action and you hardly get anything of the former while a flimsy toned down version of the latter with stormtrooper aim dialled up the highest level as if the operator has hacked the matrix and is purposely making the bad guys miss every shot. The biggest sin was having the now John Wick at your disposal and not giving him a gun throughout the movie or having any scene with Neo going all out and instead relegating him mostly to force push and pull. There was also no real tension or actual danger/threat in the movie. All in all, this was a clunky and messily executed amalgamation of some cool ideas and concepts, new and old, and a trip down memory lane which kept it from diving into the abyss further propelled a bit by my inner fan bias of this world. By no means a good movie and after pondering upon it for a while, I can certainly see where the hate is coming from. If you're a massive fan of the trilogy, you might enjoy it but if you only like/love the first one and didn't enjoy the sequels, chances are this won't bring your mind around. And if I were to rate it, I'd give it a 6/10.
