Beautifully shot, written, acted and directed. The lowest press ratings (The Atlantic in particular) sound mean-spirited and dismissive. This is a fine film and Chalomée, at the very least, merits an Oscar nomination.

One of the best movies on Netflix, from the visuals to the dialogue (it may not be Shakespeare's exact words, but it captures the language of the times excellently), this is a masterpiece.

Awesome movie. Starts out well, but gets bogged down a bit towards the middle. However, the final battle and the ending really make up for any slow parts. MVP here is Catherine. Although, based on Shakespeare's Henriad plays I would have preferred watching a historial depiction of King Henry V of England. Saying that, I did enjoy this movie. Definitely a worthwhile endeavour.

The slow onset is well compensated with a dramatic tone, away from the usual of genre. Chalamet shows that advances with certain steps to maturity, casting as a awkward, reluctant heir. One of big shots of Netflix.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was confused with Hal's character. He wanted peace and was against violence, but then, he was violent with his staff, stabbing his aid who he believed to have betrayed him. Isn't this the action he despised with his father?

Perhaps the film tried to show the downfall of an innocent youth changed in violent times. With the French prince taunting Hal, and with the loss of his good friend, Hal turns to "the dark side", giving a thumbs up to war.

I would have liked to have seen him then come to realization that his darkness is wrong. Perhaps this is suggested when he starts to meet his future wife in the end.… Expand

All the mud and the stabbings in order to get through plate mail was filmed in all its glory. Pity they didn't use half-swording or mordhaus in the duel, I would have loved to see that, but no movie or tv show has yet to show it.

The big revelation to me was Timothee Chalamet- I've heard about him but this was the first time I saw him in a movie, and he is a good actor- he'll be playing Paul Atreides in Dune so I cant wait for that to come out too.

The one thing that was out of place is Robert Pattinson- he seems downright goofy in playing the French Dauphin, it felt like he was imitating Peter Seller's Inspector Closeau.… Expand

This movie perfectly displays medieval politics and it's culture. The final battle is the most accurate battle with full plate armor in any movie I have ever seen. Truly a masterpiece that does a great job at displaying history.

The King is a new original feature from Netflix. It stars Timothee Chalamet, Joel Edgerton, Robert Pattinson, and Sean Harris. It's directed by David Michod, who is most known for Animal Kingdom. It's directed by David Michod, who is most known for Animal Kingdom. The movie is about a young prince called Hal, who is more interested in getting drunk and sleeping around then being involved with the crown. Hal's forced into the role of King after his father dies and must learn to navigate the rocky waters of politics involved in the world of royalty. Timothee Chalamet plays the role well; his ability to go from vulnerable to rageful, to go from uninterested to inspirational, is excellent. Joel Edgerton plays Hal's friend and mentor Sir John Flagstaff. The dynamic between them is good, but it could've been great if they played it out a little more. Robert Pattinson plays the young French Prince, and he is probably my favourite part of the film. The scene that introduces his character is very memorable. Sean Harris plays the advisor to Hal; his performance is understated but essential, a scene that takes place later in the film involving him rivals Robert Pattinson's introduction. The cinematography is excellent, in particular during a scene where the English are unleashing hell on the French Kingdom. The shots of the trebuchets firing through the night sky are downright beautiful. The fight choreography is excellent too. There is an authenticity to how they shot the fights, not only with the gritty and gory realism but also with how the battles played out with hundreds of men wearing cumbersome and limiting armour. Medieval battles looked more like a rugby match, with warriors battling it out in a tight huddle, and that's what they captured here. David Michod directs well here, mainly when melds both a stunning visual aesthetic with the dark and gritty. Unfortunately, the score is generic and forgettable, that and the missed opportunity to flesh out the dynamic between Hal and Flagstaff are my main gripes with the movie. All in all, I recommend the film. I hope many people watch it, so Netflix continues to make more movies with this quality.… Expand

Overall an excellent movie. Enjoyed the score, the cinematography was gorgeous and solid performances from Timothée Chalamet and Joel Edgerton made for a wholly enjoyable movie experience.

One of the best medieval films I've ever seen, with the most brutal and somewhat realistic depiction of warfare at the time at least from what all I've seen. From people using blunt weapons against armored foes, to using daggers to stab in between the chinks in armor, both of which I rarely see in such films. The scene where the French Dauphin remarks that they will make Agincourt famous for slaugtering the English army is also a good laugh, if you know a bit about medieval history and battles.… Expand

Overall a very good movie. I went into this not having much backstory on Henry V and that helped. The cast did a very good job and set the tone for how serious the film is. The film this first brought to mind was Warren Beatty's "Reds", not that they share many narrative similarities, but they both tell the story of men overwhelmed by their place in history, emboldened by it and, in many ways, betrayed. Even the look of the film echoes some of the work done by Vittorio Storaro in the earlier film; Adam Arkapaw is a brilliant young cinematographer and a future film bro god, I'm sure.

Henry V is not one of the Shakespeare plays I've read or seen (though now I want to watch the Branagh), so I came into this quite unaware of what was to come and in the early going, I wasn't sold on Chalamet's take as a young wayward prince who despised his father ("the monster") and the transition from outcast to king comes so quickly, it doesn't give us much time to adapt. Before we know it, young King Henry is insulted by a gift from King Charles of France and convinced to take his country to war by his minions. But once he does take the crown, his ascent from boy king to leader of men becomes more urgent and convincing. Aided by his close friend, John Falstaff, they are soon crossing the channel to wage war and gain the respect that can only come by sacrificing hundreds of young men all for god and country.

"The King" raises many questions about the responsibility of leadership and the hell it can unleash in the wrong hands, but it struggles to answer them. Falstaff's advice can only go so far before the great battle of Agincourt is upon us and, in 2019 when we're all accustomed to the cries of draining the swamp, Michod shoves his soldiers right into it, perhaps an unintentional metaphor, but one that serves the film when it badly needs it.

Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris are fantastic as the yin and yang to Chalamet's king Henry. Ben Mendehlson and Thibault de Montalembert (from the fun French series "Call My Agent") are the opposing kings whose animosity is handed down to Hal. Lily-Rose Depp has a great scene at the end of the film that brings a lot of the proceedings together. The rest of the cast, including Tom Glynn-Carney, Thomasin McKenzie and Ivan Kaye, are all excellent in their brief roles. Then there's Robert Pattinson as the French Dauphin, son of King Charles. From earlier reviews, I expected the accent to be a bit more outrageous, but I think it suited his character.

All other technical aspects are top notch: directing, score, editing, costumes, production design. There's some solid stuff there and if this was a conventional theatrical release, its Oscar chances would have to be improved.

In the end, a lot of this is the Timmy show, and the main reason I would watch this in the first place. Taking this role is a shrewd move for the young actor following his softer turns in Call Me by Your Name and Beautiful Boy. He smolders throughout and comes close to being a spoiled pout, but it never takes, and by the time he's leading his men into battle, I believed him completely. He is one of those actors who is capable of expressing great emotion without the gnashing of teeth and histrionics that weighs down others. I have no doubt that he will be one of the great actors and movie stars of his direction. I'd sure as hell follow him into the breach.… Expand
